Although the premise was intriguing to say the least, the very distant birds-eye perspective was not my cup of tea. I was more of a Driver sorta guy.
When Driver 2 was finally released, we all flocked to get it. For the first time, Tanner (Driver’s hero) could get out of the car, steal other cars, etc… The stuff that made people liked the first two GTA titles (except for the blatant carnage). But Driver 2, even with the improvements, was not all that it was cracked up to be. The car physics were still great, as was the replay feature and the cut scenes, and with roads that actually curved, it was a step up from the previous title. But, with horrible graphical popup and freezing plaguing the gameplay, Driver 2 kinda fizzled out.
So, I was surprised to hear that GTA3 was going for the 3D perspective. And you know what, they do it well.
First off, let me say that I was pretty disappointed when I put this game in the machine. I wanted those Driver-type big squishy muscle car physics with the Starsky-and-Hutch visuals and music. GTA3 is no Driver, and although the physics leave a little to be desired (you don’t feel totally immersed in the driving aspect – somewhat like the Dukes of Hazzard series’ driving physics) it’s a hell of a lot better than Driver ever was. It took me a day to figure that out, but now I’m a GTA3 junkie..
It’s hard to describe a game like this. It’s a great blend of a lot of gaming genres. Obviously, you have the Driver-like behind-the-wheel antics mixed with Carmageddon splatter with a dash of Shenmue. It’s truly a work of art, and you’ll quickly get caught up in its world.
There are almost 100 missions throughout the game ranging from setting up car bomb attacks to delivering prostitutes to winning street races and everything in between. Pedestrians are free to be killed by a number of methods including clubbing, shooting and being squashed by vehicles. No more magic Driver pedestrian escapes (like the people in Cuba who disappear into building walls), in GTA3, they’re history.
My only complaints right now, since I haven’t finished the game yet, have to do with the carnage. While it was funny in the beginning, it gets to where you can’t make a turn without killing somebody or a group of people. I’m not grossed out by it or anything, it just gets a little ridiculous at times. Also particularly annoying is that you can smear a group of people and the cops don’t even bat an eye. I like things a little more realistic. But, that’s just personal opinion and even so, it doesn’t cloud the fact that this is truly an incredible game. And given that I haven’t even touched on all of the facets of this game myself, it may get more realistic as I go on.

The gameplay in this third installment of the now-infamous Grand Theft Auto series hasn’t changed much from its predecessors, which means it's just as addictive as before. The visual and sound package is greatly improved. And like any city, expect an enormous variety of cars to drive, each of which controls differently but still remains simple to maneuver. With so much to see and do, you’ll never want to stop playing Grand Theft Auto III, even if it is a hard knock life.

| gta rules | | joseph from vic aus says (26/Dec/2003): | i have owened gta 111 for soming like six months now when i first bought my ps2 i had midnight club 1 i thought it was da best until i got gta 111 i think gta 3 is great ilove da cars, radio stations, people and what they say, bosses, and just about everything the game has to offer the reason i only gave a 9 out of ten rating was that cops are extremely dumb and that when someone is attacking u if u fight back u get a wanted level or if u accidently nudge their car they come straight after u anyway apart from that it rules i also luv da way the yardies lobo has air ride suspension which i love i am carmad by the way i like the rumpo, banshee, flatbed, patriot and lots more the graphics are excelent my friends and i laugh for hours over some of the hilarious sayings evrything about gta 3 is great. keep up the good work rockstars north ps: i am reading reviews galore on gta vice city and i am begging my parents to get it for me some lovely cars there and lots of cool ideas and weapons.

Buses, you go up small steps, people from china town talk chinese w/ english, move boxes, jump on cars, and etc! But i have one question! Could someone help me? the information booklet that came with the game says i can ride the train and the planes. But when i reach the subway station in Portland, it says it'll open later to transfer me to an island. I waited a whole day there and it didnt open! What do i do?! I'm up to Toni's meeting mission, did all of the dog bitchin food mission (the wife, staff, and bank murder mission), did all of Luigi's missions, and up to Joey's getaway mission. Thatz all the missions i did up to though, if that'll help me gain access to ride the subway.

Got Virtua fighter 4 around same time (months ago) and have been on it twice. You better of completed all your other games before playing this one cos you wont want to play anything else for a long long time. btw: this game has more secret stuff than any other game i played in my lifespan. I think ill stop killing feds and piloting planed and driving cars boats and watching the bllodthristy gore that gta3 has to offer when Tomb Raider 4500 is out which starrs Lara "Wheelchair" Croft w/drip food. GTA 3 has some better stuff then vice city though. vice city doesnt have mafias. GTA 3, has mafias all around. If you kill just one, they will be chaseing you in either a vheicle, or on the streets trying to shoot you. And vice city has gay clothes. If you don't have neither one of these games, THEN YOU ARE WASTING YOUR LIFE! THESE GAMES ARE THE BEST ANY ONE COULD EVER BYE! the graphics are ausome, the people are ausome, and the whole game looks realistic! But you should always look out for triods in Portland. If you just see one, don't even bother to even punch him, or else all of them will be chasing you with either a bat or a gun. Lets hope its a bat, or else you will be dead before you know it. and if you so much as point a gun at cop, then you already have two stars. But thats the best way you should start out if you wanna get all six stars, which is probably the hardest thing to do. But thats the only way to get a tank unless you use the cheat. But I don't use cheats until I'm finished with the game. otherwise iyt just makes the game too easy. Well, there is just one more thing I have to say. This game is so realistic. It has the best missions ever, best characters, setting, vehicles, and everything. It's such a COOL game. I mean, Once my sisters boyfriend rented it from Blockbuster I tried it and then got hooked on it. I just could not put the controler down. Then after a day, we had to take it back, and guess what? I was so upset, I just had to buy it. So my dad bought it from a game store and from then on I played it every single day. I beat the game in 3 days after playing it for hours. This game is the most best game in the whole wide world in my opinion. Maybe in others it's the worst, but in my opinion I think that it is awesome. Thank You Rockstar Games for making this game. It really gave me something to do. I only have two Grand Theft Autos, GTA Vice City and GTA 3, and I love both of them! PEOPLE let me give you some ADVICE. Play this game and your boredness will end forever.

This one has all the things in it to be a 9 or 10, but I have to give it an 8. The gameplay was FUN. I loved doing all this stuff, running around, blowing up stuff, ect. I think this game is great. The graphics were average. All the different gangs, and the Mafia,(my favorite) made this game really exciting. I liked how you made certain gangs mad, and how they tried to kill you later on. This game is amazing, its like doing all the stuff that you can't get away with in real life, and to all the people who say stuff about how people shouldn't play this game, you need to back off a little. I mean this game has alot of bad stuff on it, but if you don't want your son or daughter playing it, then don't let them buy it. Don't try to get other people to stop, as long as you know the difference between real life and game its ok, and before you get mad at this, think. "Did I teach my kids reality from fiction, did I teach them right and wrong." This game is a bad influence, but as long as you did your job as a parent, then think about it, are your kids gonna go crazy and shoot somebody. This game is good in grahics, sound, ect., but it has one thing that made me lower it by 2 stars, the bug in the game, after I parked the FBI car in the garage it messed my game up completely, and now I can't even play for more than 5 min without a freeze up, and thats if it don't freeze after the opening story.

I went to a party and the person who was running it had this game for a present, and the first go i had on it, i was hooked!! Then, for an easter present i asked for this instead of eggs, and I made the right choice by far. I have never been off this game apart to sleep and go to school. The games ability to free roam around and do what ever you is what i like most, it has almost no restrictions in what you do! The graphics are superb, if you to a five second glimpse at it, you would think it is a t.v programme. you can have the most fun you have had on any other game beaten by far even if you play on this for five minutes. The realistic sounds and graphics are like no other. The echo in ally way are like real, the sound of rain and weather are real, and even if you shoot some thing to gun shoot sound real. When you get soot the amount of life it takes off is like what it would in real life, and the selection of guns are brilliant. All in all I give this game ten out of ten and recomend it to any one who likes free roaming games and has quite a bit of time.

No doubt nothing even comes close to it. The game has hundreds and hundreds of hours of playability in it and just the sheer thought of going around killing people and stealing cars and picking up some white trash girls and getting a little someting something is just a great idea. This game has it's own genre, and i am hoping for more. This is the kind of game that will evolve games that will basically give you a city and you do whatever you want to do. Be a drug dealer, a hit man, a mafia boss, the gang leader and so on. This game is probally the biggest games ever to be made. After beating the game i still go back and play the whole game over again because it is just so much fun. i owned and played GTA and GTA 2 and this beats them without question. Since Playstation 2 will soon be getting an online adapter i feel kiddy that the next GTA will be implementing some kind of multiplayer in the future. When (and i no doubtingly think there wont be) GTA4 comes out with the online play attached it will break another milestone. THis game is the greatest game ever made and a huge revulutionary step in the progress of crime in games.

I really never played video games for longer then 1-2hrs. With this game I have been at it for 3 hole days that is how good it is. So take some time off and rent/buy GTA 3. Just wanted to shout out some people while I am on this site

| Could Be Better | | Jared from West Virginia, USA says (1/Jan/2004): | Lemme tell you, i've played alot of games. There are good ones and bad ones, GTA 3 is somewhere in the middle. Many things could have made this game much more enjoyable. A few more cars (that actully go over 50 Mph and are useful) would help. Some different guns (a secret lazer would be nice),also.Theres not enough happening to be interesting. People want action, guns blazing, and some better AI in a game. We would be in some serious trouble in the real world if our cops were like the ones in this game. Ohh, one more thing, what happened to the place where a dangerous person could mount some firepower on the front of his/her car, along with the oil slicks and carbomb you could get any time you want. Heres the final opinion. Although the game beats most others, theres still one thats a heck of alot better, GTA Vice City. Grab it and you get the same thing as GTA 3 plus more.
