A Little Sloppy, But All Said...A Great Game7648

Arend D. Hart from The Great Lakes State says (5/Jun/2002):
I don't know if I really need to go into a lot of detail here, it seems as though the others have hit the nail on the head. This is definitely one of the neater titles to be released in a while. It's like a straight-up shooter with a pinch of action and puzzle elements and it all comes together quite well in the end. The game is already famous for its bullet-time gimmick, which is definitely a cool feature. But the game is far from perfect. However, as with GTA3, the cool factor of the game far outweighs the annoying glitches.

So, what's good? For one, the atmosphere is great. Max Payne, the character, is the Guy Noir of the new millenium. His badass attitude, his dry wit, is all so cheezy that it's good. He's pissed at the world, and for good reason. He comes home one day to find his wife and child murdered by a bunch of hired goons who thought it would be fun to hang around a little too long for their own good. The story flows from scene to scene, each joined to the next by still photo comic strip (w/ voice narration) panes which constitute the "graphic novel". Novel idea, excuse the pun. Anyway, whether it's a cut scene or a graphic novel scene, or actual gameplay scenes...Max Payne has some real style.

So for the bad? Well, the biggie is the huge amount of slowdown caused during the big firefights. It's almost like the developers expected you to use bullet time in a big shootout, so they didn't bother to make sure the game could run at full speed. Also aggravating is the fact that it's usually more accurate to just let Max Shoot blindly than to actually try to aim the gun at the target. It's almost like there is some strange kind of auto-targeting which works swell, but doesn't give you any idea who you're aiming at. And generally, if you aim at something, you'll miss.

There's also the issue of the save points (see reviews below) and cut scenes, and how you can't skip over FMV-type cut scenes that follow save spots. And, with the shoddy controls, it's difficult to not have to keep restarting after dying during a movement-based jumping or balancing puzzle.

Like I said, though, even with all the faults, this game is pretty awesome. However, unlike GTA3, I would not pay $50 for Max Payne. $40, maybe... $30, why not, eh? $20...Better get outta the way sucka, that friggin game is mine!

Hey Punk! I rented Max Payne from www.RedOctane.com

Max Payne. What can I say? Pure Excellence.40355

BenN from Wisbech, England (But in Africa right now) says (12/Apr/2004):
Once again I have to say that this game has 'Genius' written all over its gritty DVD cover. Even though I'm stuck on the last level, Aesir tower, (How I am I supposed to make the tower fall on the helicopter? If you feel like helping me out my email is at the bottom)I looooooved the rest of the game!
1)The graphics are excellent(why is max always smiling? I dont see whats so funny)
2)The gameplay is something else
3)Using bullet time to kill everyone is just great, though bullet time is getting old now
4)Guns!!Lots and lots and lots of big guns!!!!
5)The sounds are wicked!!(Ba-BOOM, ka-pow, ka-pow, aaarrrrgghhh!)
6)The main game is incredibly long, and the others make it, like, a half year long!
7)I got my version dirt cheap. In England you can find this brill game anywhere.
8)The chracters and bosses have to be the best bunch of rock hard nutters I have ever seen.(Espescially Lupino! What a nutter!!
9)This may sound sick, but shooting polygon people is just plain fun, no matter how good or bad the game is.
10)And last but not least, the changing difficulty gives the game that edge that makes it as good as gameplay gets.
Okay, okay, its not completly flawless. Max's head looks like a box, his arms are like sticks and the time limits in some levels(Aesir tower and Cold Steel) are just annoying.
But all this cannot overshadow an excellent game. Please, if you dont have this game and your sitting down reading my review, stop. Get up, get some money and buy this game. Please, please, please!!!

Actually the BEST PS2 ACTION GAME31730

Brad Felizardo from Angola, Luanda says (8/Sep/2003):
Now i know why many ppl talk too much about Max Payne, i got this game and now i play it even more than EnterTheMatrix! Max Payne is absolutly the best action game of PS2 'til now. The game has a lot of sense and logic that keeps you playing, you can use almost all kinds of objects that you see in the game, and the game itsel is very very very "stronglycool" man! I even laugh sometimes while playing because of so much fun that the game provides, if you really like games of shooting and action, you gotta buy this game ya? I'm sure that it will not be a bad choice, I just want to see "FallOfMaxPayne" too now.

Again...31731

Brad Felizardo from Angola, Luanda says (8/Sep/2003):
Sorry about writing again, but i forgot to say somethings about the game. The way that Max Payne moves may be annoying in the first times you play, but once you get used to it, you'll don't even remember that you said that. The mistake in the game is the way that Max does the shoot-dodge, he allways falls in a bad way for an human's health, sometimes like his head beats in the wall, etc. But like i said, it's still the best for me, Max Payne is the best PS2 action game 'til now.

Hate this Game as much as i hate the first Netindo31382

D-DOG from Louisiana Usa Orleans says (31/Aug/2003):
This game really does not explain much. I mean why does he smile when he saw his baby dead. His arms are to long. i just think this game is to stupid. He smiles to much and then he does the matrix and then he shoots more people. Ok ok so your thinking "what u don't like shooting people" well i do and i think this game is the worst game in history, even worst than donkie kong. Ok All i'm saying is if u like shooting games don't pick this one up cause it might mess up you love for them...

Get Ready For Payne29428

Trevor Ferguson says (7/Aug/2003):
I can see why Max Payne was one of the greatest hits. Its an awesome game!!!!! Everthing is molded together perfectly just wish I could play a good action game such as this but not have your person go through the wall. Thats probably the only flaw that Max Payne has, but other than that. The game kicks a**.

Max Payne gives out Maximum Pain29310

Daniel Grainge from London, England says (6/Aug/2003):
Max Payne, one of the best games made for playstation 2 and Xbox. It is great. From the slow-motion matrix like dives, to the novel like story line. Its all there. There are many guns, many ememies, and many levels to play on. The name Max Payne just rings a bell saying it. Max Payne does give out Max Pain because well. It does really. The most death defying, superflying, frantic game in all of Britain. (Or the rest of the world!) From the Handgun Berettas to the Jackhammer. Its all there. Action packed weapons for an action packed game.
I only got this game a month ago, and i still havent completed it, because i have been playing each level over and over again, mastering it. Its a brilliant game and well worth the 10 stars!!!

Good and Bad...25140

A gamer from Austin, Texas USA says (10/Jun/2003):
This game is great if your an action fan and you like shoot em-ups. But other than the "bullet time" feature and the run shoot style gameplay, it's just boring and it can get old after a while. It also is a disturbing game in the beginning and when there are nightmares about what happened to his wife and baby. The plot plain sucks, your wife and baby are dead so you go and seek revenge and somehow go through every last junkie and mob boss in NYC and somehow survive without getting one bullet to pierce the skin. A little unbeliveble but the game is very cool. Every gun fight you are in the center of the action and with bullet time you can make the gunfights even better. My favorite thing to do is take double ingrams and dive out of a corner while blasting up some baddies. It gets boring after a while and there are many glitches too. On the second to last level on top of a building there is this little platform you walk on and if you have the invincible cheat on and fall off you will fall to the ground but survive and there will be no way out so you have to either restart your machine or kill yourself with an M79. Overall I would recommend this game but if your looking for something that will last, forget this game!

A great game, only almost flawless18303

Tim "mandude" .H from Cherry hill, NJ says (26/Feb/2003):
Max Payne is a great game, but i see some errors in it. read the rest to find out more. Concpt: The story is huge, a lot to follow but u will enjoy it. Its volient, but still kewl. Some of the cut senes are really brutal. most of the cut senes are volient. Its still an awsone story(the volience accley helps it lol) Graphics: The backrounds are great, but the characters faces look like !< remove me > at #$ i thought they were blocks at first. On the otherhand, the combat is soooooooooooooooooo real. I swore i was max payne when i saw it, and the backrounds are so detaled. There is just enough blood to make it look real also, and the fire in some levels looked like i was sittin next to a fireplace! I think the graphics are good, alomost great Sound: This would get a perfect 10 outta 10. The voice overs are awesome, and you get the feel of the game this way. theres nothing else to say excpt the sound rocks. Gameplay: This area is o.k because the game is so easy! i beat it in 2 weeks. the way the graphics and sound kinda work together is pritty good. Entertanment: u WILL have fun with this game Replayibilty: u will quit right after you finish the game:
i highly recomend you only rent this game, not buy it.

Max Payne.......a few parts are a Payne.8829

Alex from Concord, NH USA says (3/Aug/2002):
I enjoyes the action of this game when I used cheats, cause other than cheats the game is extremely hard. I did enjoy the Matrix like feel when jumping around the corner and wiping a few bad guys. As a matter of fact towards the end the game has a fight part with pillares where you can shoot from and dance around like in the movie The Matrix. The part I hated about this game is the running through an endless maze almost. All you do is run around on blood trails and learn a little biot of the movie. A word to the developers, please dont harass gammers again in this fashion. Thart part of the game made me want to throw it to local garbage can.. oh wait I rented it, they probably would of not liked that. The graphics and gameplay are atleast par. Max Payne is a renter. You will get frustrated with it early, so get some cheats and just have fun.

Feel Maximum Pain!!!8777

James Bond from Indiana, USA says (31/Jul/2002):
It's the coolest game there is! I know it gets a little down when your wife and baby die but the bullet time gamplay is great! You gotta admit, it's pretty neat being able to dive into the air in slow motion!

What a mistake of a game!7800

mathew from Toronto,Ont. says (12/Jun/2002):
I won't waste anytime and come out to tell you what I really think. This came sucks. I didn't like one thing about it, the graphics are poor and the gameplay sucks. The storyline behind the game is absoultely pointless and i hate it. To me it looked like they were trying to rip off Syphon Filter. By the way it didn't work it still bytes. In all honesty save your money and go buy gta3. If you already have one get two as max payne is a payne in my side.

A good attempt to bring action into another realm6928

Sam from England says (14/Apr/2002):
Max Payne has accumulated a lot of hype and, I have to say, it has been well-deserved. At the moment I'm borrowing this game and it's been a lot of fun to play. The storyline has a good flow to it and the gameplay doesn't slow down. There are, however, some minor floors that let the game down, such as loading times. I get really frustrated when I die and have to continue from the last save point, and it takes AGES to start. Also, I would have preferred some variety in the gameplay, a few more puzzles perhaps? Don't get me wrong, blasting baddies in slow mo is great fun, it's just that sometimes it all seems a bit repetitive. The bullet time mode is a novel feature though. Another complaint of mine is that, once you've completed the game, there isn't much in terms of replay value, except for the other difficulty modes and the End Combat. Like I said, it's fun shooting baddies matrix-style, but it offers little reward, save for some small satisfaction. Also, I found the bit where you have to follow the trail of blood a bit pointless and dull; they could have put something like that into a cinematic sequence. Speaking of which, the cinematics were obviously a bit rushed. They don't offer nearly as much atmosphere or excitement as the likes of MGS2, and the ones that delve into the story are done in comic strip form, with the characters portrayed by dodgy looking photos of "actors", although most of them tend to look like they're constipated. Altogether, I was a bit disappointed with it after expecting it to be a turning point in videogaming which, of course, it is, but only in the sense that it gives you a satisfying slow motion option within the game. I think I'll stick to my MGS2, thanks.

ABSOLUTLY ACE!5562

Andy Duckworth (&i) from Manchester, United Kingdom says (2/Feb/2002):
Max Payne is without a doubt the best ps2 release of the 2 years the ps2 has been out! The graphics and the sounds are superb and the slow bullet mode is the most advanced, gobsmacking piece of gaming brilliance that I have seen in a long awaited time.I was counting down the days till this game was released and now I can't get off it! It makes you feel as though you are actually there! I give this game a high recommandation to all those gamers out there just itching to get some action packed shoot-em up style gaming in their life!!

Payne PS2 delivers.....5277

Bjorn from Roosendaal, The Netherlands says (14/Jan/2002):
Most reviews on the net rave on about how much better this game looks on PC and X-box. And with both those versions running at 60 frames/sec. well...frankly it does. But believe me, despite the slower framerate the game still looks good on your PS2, just press "pause" in mid-action to see what I mean..... The game very rarely slows down and if it does at all, you won't notice because you'll be too busy waisting baddies. So basically it is still just as much fun and delivers the same thrills as the afor mentioned versions. The controls are (arguably) even better on PS2. I for one love keyboard-mouse controls in shooters but for some reason this game just plays better using the Dual Shock.
Sound is also excellent and identical to the pc version.
What's also pretty cool is the fact that the game autosaves all your completed levels separately which means that once you complete the game you can go back and replay all your favourite levels... But hey what am I talking about...I guess what it all boils down to is that you have a game that's about a guy in a black leather jacket taking out the trash in dark bars, raunchy bordellos, dark alleys, abandoned parking lots etc.. wielding all of your favourite weapons such as uzis, shotguns, double handed pistols, a sniper rifle etc etc in the process... and as if that wasn't cool enough, on your command the game slows down, and you can do your business in slomo "matrix-style" I mean heck what is NOT cool about that, go out and buy this now...

Best Game Ever!5281

PJ from Toledo, Ohio, USA says (14/Jan/2002):
I have this game for PC and PS2 and I say it is the best game yet. Ever since I started playing it I've been a natural at it. I have had a review in here before and the last one i did convinced atleast 8 people to buy the game.
First of all this game has 3 parts to it with like 10 chapters in each part, so it is quite long. It has a great story line and plot to it, the most plot to it is Payne gets framed for murder that sort of thing. This game reminds me of the Matrix because of it's Bullet Time and Shoot Dodge. Bullet Time is when everything slows down and lets you get great shots on the men. Shoot Dodge is when you jump to the side and shoot slowly.
The weapons are great also like Dual Berreta's(2 guns),Shotgun,Dual Uzi's,Sawed off Shotgun, pipe,Berreta,Greanades, those bottles what blow up, and a Sniper Rifle. My favorite is the Dual Berreta's and Dual Uzi's.
Also in the game you can kill the innocent and they will fight back. You deal with the Mafia and the Police in the game. Finally the game has great grapic's. The game is $49.99 and you can find it at Myjer, K-Mart,Media Play, and Best Buy. If you liked Grand Theft Auto 3 you will love this.If you have any questions E-Mail me.
