IGN went as far as to give this game the lowest rating of any PS2 game available. Yep, its lowest rating. Well, they're rating with their blinders on, in my opinion. It might not be the best PS2 game, but it surely isn't the worst by any means.
You've got to expect Activision to try milking every last drop out of the Tony Hawk cash cow they (through the awesome work of Neversoft) have raised. And, given that they have addressed skateboarding and BMX already, the next logical choice would be to take a stab at snowboarding. And that they have done. And not too badly, I must say. With a great physics engine, top-notch graphics, and signature THPS-style control and level design under their belts, it's really hard to go wrong.
So why are people complaining? Because it's not a Tony Hawk Pro Skater (THPS) game. See, the gaming masses are a bunch of insatiable sheep... By now, the THPS series has been around for a while. We've grown accustomed to all the things that made THPS so great, and like a very good drug, we are always hungry for more. The day the original THPS was realeased was the last day that any trick game could be reviewed objectively. From that point forward, every game was reviewed in comparison to the current THPS release.
So, given that, it seems that people really don't know what they want. They want a new trick game, and it better be every bit as good as THPS, but it better not be too much like THPS, or it'll just be another THPS. And as so, people are going to find every fault they can to prove why it's both a) Failing miserably to mimick THPS and b) Just another THPS on snow. That's where this game is failing people. It uses the THPS engine, THPS controls and THPS-type missions. However, due to the fact that snowboarding down a hill doesn't give the ultimate freedom of THPS (since you sorta have to go, uh...DOWN the hill), they say it sucks compared to THPS. But, on the other hand, it's just another THPS on snow.
Same as above but with the other trick-tastic game SSX...
Me? I really don't let the words of the others sway me on this game. It's a whole lot of fun. Sure, it's just another THPS on snow, and yes, it is not as free-and-easy as THPS, and yeah, maybe I wouldn't pay $50 for it, but I found it for $20 and I like it a bunch.

Because it's more fun to ride dowm hills in the largest hills in the world. I tired of playing Tony Hawk, after it is 4 of them. So finally it's a great snowboardgame. It's not like SSX Tricky or X-Games: Winter. Because this is more real. Okey, it's not every snowboarders that can jump fifteen meter over the ground and grind many meters upp, but it's more real than many xtreme- game. It's a fun game with the largest hills inn the world and teh biggest snowboraders inn the world! Many will say that Shaun Palmer is just the same as Tony Hawk, just Shaun Palmer is on snowboard. But I will say that Shaun Palmer is a much better game than Tony Hawk 4. Buy this if you like speed, big jumps and wants adrenaline, I'm norwegian so i'm not good at english. Sorry!

| THPS3 on ice!!! | | understander from the polyfuse methed says (5/Dec/2001): | This is like Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 on ice! Awesome level designs that are very orginal with very good framerate. The control is great because you can pull off skateboard tricks on a snowboard! Grinding Is very fun in this because their is always something new to grind. Awesome soundtrack too and great graphics their are a ton of tricks to do.
