Good graphics, and sound lots of fun.36136

Jeremiah Johnson from STL MO USA says (27/Nov/2003):
This is my favorite game of this type of genre. It's ALOT like Diablo with one big exeption.....Its two players at the same time. When in 2 player mode if one of you die you simple return to a save stone to revive your fellow warrior. The save stone are everywere unlike other games like Final fantasy were you can play for hours without seeing one.Put it this way, there is a level with the always anoying jumps/pits.The ones every Rpg player loaths.Well In Dark Alliance there is a save stone after every jump :) I was very impressed with this. The potion system is also great you simple clicl the R2 button to drink a health potion,or L2 for a mana potion.Unlike othergames that make you waste time going to a subscreen, distracting you,and whoever is playing with you at the time from the action. There are 3 characters to choose from.Archer, fighter, and a mage.Later in the game you can also get a not so secret charater by beating it on extream mode, and finishing the guantlet.Theres 2 handed weapons, one handed weapon+shield, and a bow.Another great thing is that you can switch from bow to your weapon simple by pushing left on the D-pad.Once again saving you and your friend from wasting time. And if that wasnt enough of a time saver for you they put in recal potions. When if used will take you back to the town of the world you happen to be in.So when you load up on loot you dont have to run back through the dungeon wasting time again.Nice graphics, and sound.PLay control is nearly flawless once you get used to it,expecially with the potion/switch weapon hot keys. Also if you click the R1 button it will rais up your sheld to block, and the L1 button will bring a minimap of the dungeon up,cliclk l1 again to make it smaller. The only thing I dont like about the controls are sometimes its gets difficult to hit an enemy in melee combat if they are running around you in circles, and my biggest but still small complaint about controlls is the spell cycle system.you hit down or up on the d-pad to get cycle through the spells its a bit confusing wich on you have in the slot. You can only have one spell equiped at a time, and combat is fast paced so if your want to use a differant spell right away you basicly have to run away by steering the left analog stick with your right hand and pushing down on the d pad with your left, maybe if the right analog stik would cycle through spells.Because I wanted to be able to shoot a fire arrow the use repulion spell to knock enemys back, then repeat.Still its better than going to a sub screen, and a controller only has so many buttons.Another complaint is the lack of Bows the merchants sell.On extreem mode you cant even Buy a bow in the shops.I am almost sure that no merchant sells bows on extreem mode, and bows don't drop off monsters often.and if one does it would prolly be a low damage one.Still a small compaint.Lastly is like everyone else the lenght of the game. Its just to short.I mean it has 4 dif settings though, and replay value is a 10 out of 10.I have beaten it like 15 times. And as I said before all the time you save by not having to go to subscreens for weapon switching, drinking potions,or changing spells is a big timesaver.
I wanted to give this game a 10 but I will save that rating for part 2 :)

RPG Winner45818

Shaun&Sher from London,England says (12/Mar/2006):
This game is GREAT. Its based on all the classic themes one has when growing up - Dragons,Trolls,Wolfs,Dwarfs,LizardMen...and a neat array of traps, deep dungeons, twisting passages and an engaging story. There are 3 characters to choose from-A dwarven warrior an elven sorceror and a human archer.Whichever character you eventually choose there are many levels to hack, chop, shoot and elctocute your way through. The items available are numerous and does make selecting a bother(when faced with leaving a sword of disruption as opposed to a sword of adaminetine)...mmmm.
The graphics are obviously the STRONG point in the game. You get to yell with joy when an army of RatMen stumble on your group and as a swords man/lady you jump straight into glorious blood spilling combat as body parts fly off their attached appendages.
To be honest I could go on for ever about the highs of this game. But being an avid gamer I myself don't like to waste time on long winded reviews. So...
You can easily get a good 20-30 hours of great gaming. The 2 player mode lets you compare notes with your friend in regards to the vast array of spells and upgrades. And the game itself...well...it is certainly one of the best RPG on the market.
Graphics 9.5
Sound 9
Gameplay 9.5

Open up the gate for a blast!!7442

Chad Randall from Nova Scotia , Canada says (21/May/2002):
Tired of the monotonous random battles in most other rpgs? Want an rpg that you and a friend can play together? Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is the answer to your prayers. Kind of a thinking man's Gauntlet, Baldur's Gate takes the hack and slash combat formula and mixes it with a recognizable (to dnd or forgotten realms fans) setting, along with great looking graphics and effects. (try not to start running around in the water, I dare you!)The gameplay is smooth, the controls not getting in the way, while character building and advancement is simple but not overly so.
Anyone tired of the "traditional" rpg should really check this game out. Its good for the person who is heavy into rpgs and is also a good game for those more into action games. The only flaw in this game is the lackluster story. Rpgs are heavily reliant on stories, and this one doesnt really cut it. Good thing that this game is so fun and addictive that the story (or lack thereof) isnt a real sore spot. Being able to play with a partner is the icing on the cake of this quality piece of entertainment. As a bonus, after beating the game, you can play as a certain drow elf well known by forgotten realms fans.Give Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance a try, you wont be disappointed.

Not what I expected7796

Demosthenes from Kansas City, USA says (12/Jun/2002):
This game left me wanting more. The graphics really are nothing to brag about and left me feeling like I was playing an old N64 game, and thats a compliment. If you are looking for something similar to Final Fantasy, you won't find it here. Really, the whole purpose of the game is to collect things and get stronger weapons. Once you get to the end of the game, you can't believe its over. I felt like I accomplished nothing. The two player mode is a bonus and made the game much better but without it, this game would totally suck. I will say it can get addictive, but only because you think your getting somewhere. Once I finished it, I felt like I just wasted a bunch of my time. I would rather play Zelda on 8-bit Nintendo then play this game again. This game is definitely NOT worth buying to anyone over the age of 18. Even a small child could beat this in a 5 day rental period and there is no replay value. How anyone could give this game a rating over 5, I will never know. Either these people work for the company designing the game or are complete idiots

Baldur's Gate: Medievil Combat to the Extreme7796

Kel from Austin,Texas,U.S.A. says (14/Mar/2002):
There's a lot to say about Baldur's Gate, first off this game should come with a Surgeon General's warning because it's extremely addictive. From start to finish Baludr's Gate is packed with the "hackin'-n-slashin'" of rats, zombies, wolves, ogres, lizardmen, and tons of other foes. This game captives you with an intrieging story line that swallows you whole. You go through your journey acquiring many medievil weapons that vary in size and ability (from a Rusty Dagger to a Masterwork Icy Burst Adamantine Battle Axe of Defense + 5). The 2 player co-op mode makes this game all the more fun, as you share this masterpiece with your buddies. The graphics blow you away, with the vast, beautiful environments and the scenes of fire and magic make you feel like you're there. Baldur's Gate is obviously a ten in my mind. Being able to get this game for only about 40 bucks should be a crime. So run out to anywhere where you can get your hands on a copy and do so.

yawnnnnn7796

Raffiki says (29/Mar/2003):
I started off in a town went through a sewer then came to a cave, then a sort of desert, then a forest, then a marsh, then a castle, then .... and it it just ends there. All in all the game was good, the graphics, well let me say that they are not PS2 quality though they do have a sort of old fashion nintendo style to it. I liked the amount of weapons that you can collect and that it has co-op. I hated however that there was only 3 characters, youd think they could have added a fourth. When I beated the final boss(didn't know yet), I told myself that I'm invicible and that any foe that will come further on will pray for mercy, but the game ended there, it just leaves you wanting more. In the end this game is pretty fun though I suggest that you rent it and not buy it for I beat it all in just two days, so the game is short.

A good game, for a short time.14945

Erik from Canada, B.C says (6/Jan/2003):
This game was really good for the first bit, I really enjoyed it up to about the last bit. At the end I played it through the whole thing with a buddy of mine and like, around the end we were wishing for somewhere to sell our stuff and we really needed potions, so naturally we thought there was more since we were getting all this stuff and cash but then it just ended all of a sudden and it was a pretty bad ending to! I dont know why they botherd making such a short game, with so few skills, say about 15 each character through the whole game? And you can also sort of cheat to fairly easily, although Your not supposed to say cheats here so i wont. But ya if your looking for a game to buy, this isn't the one. If you want to beat this game you can play for about 6 hours and beat it. Im 11 years old and this game was pretty bad.

A fun game with the diablo feel25204

Dave from japan says (11/Jun/2003):
I got into the Diablo serious and was excited to see sony convert that type of game to PS2. Many likes, the game play is simple when using magic and leveling up. Weapons are pretty cool and earning coins and buying weapons was just right. I like how once you beat the game it eluades to a 2nd baulders gate. Then it opens a guantlet mode with a new hero. The double play feature is deff. cool and makes the game a lot harder. The only thing I hated about it to end. So I'm glad to hear they are coming out with another. And its a fast game however I beat the game in about three days. I also wish you could equip your weapons with jewels like on diablo. I got excited when I found a gem but then found out it only gave me like a couple more bucks. Well its only 19 dollars now so its deff. worth it.

Its mediocre10606

came064 from Frisco Texas says (24/Oct/2002):
I got this game because I played Baulders Gate on the PC many moons ago...this is not a far fetch from the original PC game...I liked this game mainly because two players could play it and thats mainly why I bought it...I dont like the game for only one reason and that is the graphics...me being a FINAL FANTASY game player I am used to exquisite graphics from Squaresofts games...this game will literally BLIND you if you play too long...the characters walking around are way too small...if they would give you the option to have them bigger then I wouldnt have anything to complain about because otherwise I liked the game personally...heck I think the Legend of Gaia had better graphics than this game and that was way back on the old nintendo...anyway enough said...its all good though

The best adventure game for ps218484

Jeff from sterling hts. MI,USA says (1/Mar/2003):
I think this game is one of the better ps2 games, because the game is full of non-stop action and is great to play with a friend.Ive beaten this game 10 times already and still not bored with it but its nothing like the firest time exprencing it. Its great because once u beat it u can test your skills in extreme then unlock a new character, plus theres a widely selection of armor and weapons that apear on your guy and skills to make your character better.

I voted 9 out of 10 because i love this game but it could improve like more characters and skills also longer gameplay other than that this games a keeper....it's definetly worth buying.....

A really good game, but lacks the length...30964

liquid ooze from JB, Malaysia says (25/Aug/2003):
first of all, let me tell you that this is NOT like baldur's gate on the PC. It's a whole lot different, seems like the guys at bioware and black isle wanted to create something with a whole lot more actions and adrenaline pumpin' in it. i just love the graphic and sound effects. believe it or not, i really am looking forward to cross path with the baddies in this game, instead of running away from them, coz then i get to use my flaming swords and cool spells... :)
all in all it's a good game, but lacks the lenght, i mean, i finished the game in 9 hours playtime ! But heck, that's what makes the game so great, you just can't stop playing...

playable for hours. how do you stop ???7529

Baldurs Gate Junkie from South Australia, Australia says (29/May/2002):
this game is totally awesome i started playing this game and didn't stop for hours. thn my friend came over and we stayed up all night playing it. i give the graphics a huge wrap allthough its not 1st person view or anything the water looks so real. the sound effects in this game are good so don't turn the sound down or it will ruin the game. the gameplay i awesome as i said before you can't stop playing for hours. the story in this game is really good because just when you think it's going to finish it pputs another twist in the tale and gives you more monsters to slash and kill. overall i give this game a 10 out of 10 it rocks

An diehard rpg with lots of hacking and eye candy...14922

Reviewer10546 says (6/Jan/2003):
I recently purchased this game for the new price - $20.00 - clearly there could be nothing wrong with spending so little. The best part of this game in definitely the eye candy. Characters are fluid and environments are neither repetitve or blocky. However, you are restricted to a zoomed out view. Most of this game is similar to a Diablo style click-fest. No real skill is required in this game. However, you can easily beat this game in less then a day and its the same everytime (no random dungeons). A good game that could have been great without its flaws. A must buy for action rpg fans looking for a serious adventure.

A great fun game, but not for all!12962

KDM from USA says (15/Dec/2002):
THis is a rpg of corse, this game is really fun. You can get really strong swords, sheilds, armor, axes, stuff like that. When ever one of my freinds come over to my house we play this forever! These graphics are good, sound good, every thing is good good. If your playing this and ur less then 10yrs old it might be hard, I was stuck at actII, but my brother helped me out, and im older then 10! So if you dont have a PS2, get one. And if you dont have BGDA(Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance). Have fun with this game!

=0)9181

A gamer from Olympia, Washington says (22/Aug/2002):
If all you're looking for is a FF type game, then yes it will suck, so will your life. But anyways, if you're looking for a good old slice and dice kinda game, then you've found it. There's plenty to kill and plenty to kill you, especially in extreme mode. The replay value is good, you can go back and build up your characters or search for better weapons and armor. It's even fun to go back and play with no weapons or armor at all with a maxed out character. All in all I must give it two thumbs up!! =0)

left wanting more14497

Jenn from stuart usa says (2/Jan/2003):
i thought that the game was great except for the fact that i beat it in no time flat. i think that the game could have been a little bit longer than that. even the adventure games on the old nintendo lasted longer.the end mentions another adventure so hopefully when they come out with it, it will be a bit longer and maybe more like the computer version.

One of the top 5 best PS2 games!!!!!!!5585

A gamer from USA says (3/Feb/2002):
Not really a game for those who are weak. If you like Gauntlet: Dark Legacy you'll love this game. It's a little confusing at first but once you get the hang of this it's awesome. Many choices from weapons to armor to special attacks. You can fight rats, zombies, and many other creatures. As I said in the begining NOT A GAME FOR THE WEAK!
