Choose Your Own Adventure - Feudal Japan |
| Halfdeaf from Tennessee (the place to be) says (5/Nov/2003): |
I am giving this game an "8". I never give games this high of a score. Basically, this is a choose-your-own-adventure game for the PS2. I like it!
This game does what others do no tby providing the user with an "all around" sort of gameplay. You are a samurai in a time where the sword is almost outdated, and the gunpowder weapons are taking over. There are different factions and families in the game that you can join, fight or ignore. There are a variety of endings that you can get based on the choices you make.
You can't "save" your game in the traditional sense, but you can "bank" your swords by leaving the valley. You can collect up to 61 swords for re-entry into the game. Also, the more you accomplish the more extras are available to you. For example, you go through the game a few times and get, say, three endings. This will open up multiplayer battle, new "heads" for your main-character model. New "clothes" for your character, etc.
Another reviewer here said "Best $20 game" and I would STRONGLY AGREE. If you are into feudal japan or asian culture from that time period, or if you are simply into thought-provoking gaming then purchase this title. This reviewer was HIGHLY impressed!
Have fun!

Absoulutely the best twenty dollar game out there |
| Rob from Tampa, FL says (24/Dec/2002): |
I had the pleasurable opportunity of purchasing this game not entirely too long ago. This game is absolutely breathtaking. The graphics are immense and the fact that you decide your own destiny is inventive to say the absolute least. Hands down this is one of the best games I have ever played. I would, however, prefer for it to be more in-depth and longer, but this is definetely an intense first outing (assuming, very hopefully, that there will be a sequel). I would recommend this game to anyone who likes anything that resembles an action game or an RPG. They will be blown away

Definately a fun game to add to your collection |
| Cyst from NYC, USA says (20/Dec/2002): |
I did and do enjoy this game to this day, the replayablity factor ranks very high for this one. The wide array of swords and other weapons keep your eyes peeled for that stronger sword, while you have the option to take your current sword and make it better by visiting a blacksmith. Not to mention 200 different moves are available, all of them you have to learn by playing the game. Although no one sword has all 200 moves, (30 at most for one sword) it's quite satifying to find that one sword that fits you best. The idea of this game is to give you full control of what direction the game is taking. A great idea by any means. Such complete freedom does come with a cost however. For one, the game length is very limited. it shouldn't take you more than a hour to beat it. Although several different endings are possible, the short length in which you play kinda forces you to see the same thing over and over again in the beginning. Personally, I would have preferred it being more of a action rpg than a straight up action game with fragments of rpg concepts.
Instead of several ending, just one would suffice, in it's place make the game longer and plot lines more in depth. I don't play the single player anymore since I've collected all the swords and learned most of the moves. Still, my friends and I have a sword match here and there to break away from other games that just doesn't compare with WOTS simple yet, unpredictable fighting system that keeps the playing field even for beginners and veterans alike. the push/parry system is ingenious! I just wish the fun didn't end so quickly.

Learn the Way |
| Walkemz - san from New york says (29/Jun/2002): |
This game should revolutionize games to come. Not only do you have the decisions in the palm of your hand but you must also reap the consequences. People remember the actions you took and the way you respond. You can be the Hero, The Villain, or just a guy, you decide. But the game lacks in the area as saving, u cant control that and if u have to go and cut the game off after you saved, it will automatically start your game over. This right here is a pain. But the game can easily be beaten twenty different ways in about 5 hours and still keep you interested. So basically, pick up your sword n get ready to take a swing.

A great example of non-linear gaming |
| DAZ from TX, USA says (6/Jun/2002): |
I purchased WotS on preorder and got it on the monday after it came out. Once the shiny new disc was in my machine and running I was pleased with what I saw. The initial menu sets the mood for the rest of the game, and the tutorial mode was legitmately helpful for the first 5-6 hours of gameplay. Single player mode was my favorite, though fighting your friends can be fun. The customizable face, body, character, and swords made the game very replayable. I went out of my way to change the name and appearance of my character whenever I played through, so I wouldn't feel an obligation to play through a similar manner. It was alot of fun to watch my friend run around with a char named "Masamune" and sadisticlly kill everyone and I mean everyone. If the character had a life meter, it was dieing.I heard someone complain about the game's voice acting. I frankly disagree, there is none first off. The only "voice acting" is the occasional sound to help give the mood of the character speaking in case one might mistake the intent of the words. I did like the speech balloons as a text format rather than the traditional, picture with text associated with most rpgs, it allowed for multiple speakers at once. The interaction system was also interesting. I whether your sword is drawn or not, and what you decide to say (or not say) all effect how characters react to you. I was particularly pleased to see that thay managed to effectivly have a multiple opponent combat system where you only have ot deal with one attacker at a time, though you can switch targets mid combat. One of the things I was really happy to see didn't show up till about 20 hours of gameplay: Other weapons. there are more than just swords for weapons. My particular favorite is the Nakagiri, a long staff with blades on both ends. The graphics in the game are nice, the enviroments are well textured, though at close range some dextures do loose their luster, the character models and textures are well done as well. My only major gripe was that occasionally the camera would put itself in an obscenely bad place while I was fighting so I would literally be fighting blind, however, the use of the right analog stick for camera control quickly fixed this. I'd go into more detail regarding the multi-path capabilities, but I don't want to give away any plot points. Suffice to say, everything you say or do effects the plot flow.
