Great! ...But still a problem the FIGHTERS and END MOVIES in many fighting games...32040

Brad Felizardo from Luanda, Angola says (17/Sep/2003):
Well, in this review i'll talk about the fighters, since i think that's necessary. But about the game i got to say that there are new pretty things, cool moves, but don't talk about the music and the end movies man... I still think that Tekken 3 end movies and musics where the most, and it's bad that they can't do better than those movies, hey, but check it out, this review should really help:

Kazuya - Well, i was waiting for this fighter, i got to say that he came better than i was thinking. You'll like Kazuya, and Kazuya and Jin's end movies are the best in inspiration.

Marduk - Cool new fighter, big and destructive. Cool when with hair, and love when he says: "I'll break your face!"

Christie - Really great fighter, she is the most. But they could try to find a brazilian girl to make her voice too, her cry in battle is the worst, seems to be of a 5 years girl. Starting the battle saying something in portuguese could make the game more original and cool. Luv the way her hair moves.

Hwoarang - Better, a bit fat, but better. He now looks more like a japanese guy. As a cool additional soldier style.

Jin - Since this is the one, if he wasn't better that could be a real shame, but he is better. He is the fighter that you can say: "-Yeah, that's Jin on PS2". Because his face/style "did not changed", "got better for PS2".

Nina - A bit disappointing the clothes/body style of her in fight. But at last, her face is ok, beautiful with pink glasses. But this fighter is a "must be well" for Tekken. Nina's style n Tekken 3 was better and really cool, so, NAMCO must pay attention to these important details, more dedication should be spent on fighters like Nina.

Xiayou - How can Xiao be allways 19 years old? And her face in the end movie/photo/game doesn't match! Ok, but she is cool, and her end movie is the most beautiful of the Tekken 4 end movies, also, Miharu is a very beautiful girl.

Steve - Man, got to say that, if in a game there is a guy that fights the most realistic simulation of box, the is the one. He doesn't kick, off course, but his moves are superb.

Law - Is this the Tekken4 Law? If it is, even drunk for years Law wont look like that! Ok, but i think that this is his brother of the kitchen in Tekken 3.

King - Cool as allways, he is better here in visual, looks like a real king in the blue shirt/white trousers.

Violet - Gotta tell ya, this one is really cool. After Christie, this is the most cool fighter. It's rare to see a fighter with cool visual and moves style like that.

Yoshimitsu - Completly the WORST fighter. I dunno what happened in the makers head to make him like that! I don't even use this fighter.

So, there are the tips that will help you, as you can see, in a fighting game, the fighters are the most important, so now u know about them in Tekken4. But checking out Tekken 4, i noticed that DOA2 is a must have too.

Tekken four a great new addition11433

Thresh248 from USA, Whittier California says (17/Nov/2002):
Tekken 4 is the fourth installment in the tekken King of Iron fist tournament series. There are some noticable improvements from the past tekken the most recent one being (tekken Tag tournament). First of all the graphics are absolutely stunning, Namco went hog wild and the sheer eye candy of the game makes it fun to just watch. Story mode adds new and interesting plot development to the game and gets ou invovlved with every character. The new 3-D environments and interactivity including hitting bystanders breaking glass and smashing pillars makes for a fresh new perspective fighting games adding new dimensions to fighting strategy. For example one can side step around a pillar to get a brief moment of respite from an opponents attack. Tekken force is a feature that should have never left the tekken series since it's inception from Tekken 3. It is fun and brings back fond memories of Double dragon and Streets of Rage. Tekken Four is definetaly a great addition to the tekken series but also it has lost some great features from tekken tag tournament. First off throws have lost a lot of their role in the game as well as reversals due to the new "switch places feature" that replaces the square/x throw and never really works when your getting beaten on the wall. The enviroments generally are a little too constrictive and the game looses some to the unanswerable wall poundings opponents can give you.Overall the speed of movements the characters execute are slowed down. Personally I would have loved it if Namco had kept a tag feature in Tekken four keeping the best from Tekken tag, the tag combos and the strategery that tagging in and out added is sorely missed. I also miss the speical "game" in every tekken game, the re-installment of tekken Force replaces the special game and I feel that Namco should have done tekken air hockey or something because Tekken force though fun can get a little stale. Tekken volleyball and bowling was always a little bit of fresh air. My final criticism is that the final cut sceen movie endings have been getting prgressively worse since Tekken 3. The only truly enjoyable endings in Tekken four are Law's and Kuma's. I want Namco to look back at tekken three beacuse the quality of endings such as Mokujins,Lei's and Laws are sorely missed plz take some time to have cool endings. Overall though I must say Tekken 4 is a great game and all fighting games fan's should own it, I just can't wait for tekken 5!!!! p.s. law doesn't need a beard, and where's his yellow jump suit!!!!!!!!!

Some game players are easily impressed.14006

Sir Bigby from Seattle, WA says (29/Dec/2002):
I have played video games since video games existed. My area of preference lies in fighting games. I am not going into detail about this game, since we have all played it and already know what it is about. I am going to tell you why Tekken 4 is not GREAT. Tekken 2 for the longest time held my favor due to its "feel". "Feel" is difference between the sounds of a jab versus a roundhouse. Does the recipient react the same to both? Does the blow sound like it is being delivered by flesh and bone, or by an accordion? Did the screen shake when someone was piledriven into the ground? Does the fighter grunt when(s)he strikes? Do the fighters say the same thing over-and over again? These are the things that help me choose what is worthy of my money. Whether or not there are mini-games, super-combos, FMV's, does not help in the least if the small details are not taken care of first. Such as the use of the analog stick. Namco has had at least 10 years to show us how the advances in technology and processing power would help revolutionize fighting games. The Tekken series' only true competition came from Virtua Fighter, whose attention to detail and hundred's of subtleties made for interesting game play. But again, why limit the game play with the exclusion of an analog stick? I don't remember playing at my local arcade with a directional button.... That all changed when DOA2 hit the scene. Tecmo got it right. Big time. Four-player tag team is the single greatest gameplay advancement for fighting games since counter-moves. Tekken 4 is a good fighting game. But "good" does not cut it in the 21st century. I want freakin' jaw-dropping, "ohmygoddidyouseethat" moves. I want knock someone through a window, off a building or into traffic. When I break someone’s arm, it needs to stay broken. Teeth need to fly when I land that spinning elbow. Eyes need to be blackened. Did my character just stab you? Then bleed. Can I ram your head into a wall? Can I pop you in the face with a some lumber I found over in the corner? These are details. This is fighting. Fighting is messy, loud, and ugly. Tekken 4 does not deliver absolutely in any of these in my opinion. Then again, I have seen and played 20 years worth of games so I am much harder to impress than others.

What you see is what you get...9807

Bjorn from Roosendaal, Holland says (25/Sep/2002):
When reading other reviews on the net and in magazines I notice that reviewers rave on endlessly about how familiar it al looks: "oh it's just like Tekken3 only beter looking etc.."

In some respects offcourse they are absolutely right...HOWEVER:

Graphics:
A real graphical tour the force, if you ask me this it! This is the best your little black box can produce. Future fighting games (think Soulcaliber2) won't look better than this, they may look AS good, but there's just no way more juice can be squeezed out of the PS2 system. Just wait till you see the high resolution fighters wade trough knee high water in te jungle level, top stuff. Another impressive sight is the "underground" stage. While fighting your opponent you'll be cheared on by numerous fully rendered 3d spectators, whom you can even accidentally knock down. All this and the framerate simply refusses to drop below 60. How Namco pulled this one of is beyond me, but I love it! Put on you filthiest grin and just show it to your xbox owning friends. The game is graphically out of this world, most screenshots you'll find on the net won't do this one justice trust me on this.

Sound: Nothing groundbreaking hear: Your average oohh's and aahh's mixed in with your usual background music. Nuff said..

Gameplay: Control is spot on! And Tekken veterans will instantly notice that the fighters all seem better balanced than those found in previous installments.
There doesn't seem to be "a best" character anymore. In Tekken 2 the best character by far was Paul Phoenix. His moves were simply too powerful. This is no longer the case, any character can be pitted against the other with no advantages whatsoever. It's all up to the player to make the best of it..

Overall: YES it's basically "just" a tweaked version of Tekken 3 and YES there's only 3 new characters with one (Christie) being a copy of an old one (Eddy)But believe me, once you load this one up you won't care, you'll be to busy admiring all the good stuff that Namco has once again provided the player with...
And let's face it, that VS mode just has an infinite replay value doesn't it....

have fun!

Great, but worse than usual.15021

Sam from Japan says (8/Jan/2003):
This game is great, the cast of cool characters alone can make this game rock. The new characters (exept for Miharu) are most welcome to the battle ground, and the new enclosed areas are super-great. The fighters move fluidly and responsively all the way, This is almost real fighting!!
However, the fighting styles' ready moves (like jabs) are'nt well capted and take too much time to go and come back. Exept for Steve, you ca'nt throw a punch without linking it to a combo, or else you'll get your a$$ kicked before it comes back. This is explicitly manifested in my favorite character, Jin. The developpers probably just WANT to ruin the game for Jin: I understand that you can cut the Helicopter, but change him whole?Cm'on. Hworang is'nt helped, either. Plus, there's one Jin outfit that you ca'nt play with unless you're in the final two stages in story mode. Moreover, some characters have no close range hits (like gut punches and such), Jin also has this disadvantage, and at close range, he is helpess if it was'nt for his ONLY 6-hit combo. And at time in his Karate training,--and in Australia, I might add-- did it seem like a better idea to move ONE hit away instead of grabing their limb and ripping it off? That move is useless against Hworang, Steve, Lei, and pretty much anyone who can pull off a combo... Instead of just adding moves to the arsenal, devloppers should perfect the prowess of the martial art by making it more well rounded and protected (that means more blue time, less red time). This game lacks a lot in the flashiness, since it desperately needs more character costumes and cool(er) minigames, but it makes up a lot in its difficulty,(up untill now, my tekken 4 survival record is 28, but in tekken tag, i finished it all the way, the screen was completely full). In conclusion, this game is one for the records, and is a definite must-buy. There's a lot of mastering to do, but to Namco: just liven it up so that we do'nt get bored in the middle of the way.Do'nt kill Tekken. PS: If anyone knows how to get the third Jin costume, I'll be gratefull a million times to whowever sends it.

!!!!!!!GREAT!!!!!!!11189

Mike from Tell City Indiana. says (11/Nov/2002):
"The King of Iron Fist Tournament" is back. Tekken 4 is simply great. Without a doubt the best fighting game ever made. Once you pick up the controller, you will never want to put it down.

Graphics- The graphics of Tekken 4 are are virtualy unbeatable, if not unmatchable. Virtual Fighter was good, but it isn't near Tekken's level. Namco would never let the Tekken fans down. The graphics of the game are the smoothest graphics of a fighting game ever made. The characters are unreal. The level graphics are worth a standing ovation, the breakable walls and objects give you a stunning match, not including the trap and pound against the building wall, or the underground level. You can actually hit the bistandards. Knock them down. "The Jungle" fighting area is awsome. Fighting in knee high water!!! I'll give Namco this, you will never be matched, I'ts just not possible!!!

Story Mode is just Great. The cinema graphics are breathtaking, and the endings are better than any other Tekken.

The VS mode is addicting, you just cannot quit. first its just 1 match that turns into 2 out of three. then 3 out of five and ect.

Plus the replays are like the energizer bunny, they keep going and going and going!

Tekken Force is just unreal, but don't expect a good prize, just play because it's bad-< remove me > at $$.

BGM & sound effects-music needs some work, soun effects are pretty good, nothing special.

Tekken has a few new characters. Like Steve, is a boxer that has no kicks, the kick buttons are dodge and weave buttons. And Marshall Law is back.
Tekken is a must buy for fight lovers.

Hasn't been a Tekken this good since Tekken 117429

TzakShrike from Wollongong, NSW, Australia says (14/Feb/2003):
Well, I can't speak for everyone else, but I'm damn glad they reduced the number of characters available. It allowed them to finally balance the characters (balance was non-existant in Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag). Eddy Gordo and Christie Montiero (the Capoeira fighters) are no longer completely cheap, partially due to the enhanced graphics making it possible to SEE the attacks without learning each individual move, so they ARE now blockable with some skill. And Jin Kazama's moves have been completely reworked with traditional Karate, adding both to the depth of the game and the usability of Jin. But the BALANCE is the most amazing thing about this game. Gone are the days where characters like Gon (Tekken 3), Armor King (Tekken 1: Take note of his throwing range), and Eddy Gordo (Tekken 3) could win witout any real skill, and there are no characters who cannot be used without a complete mastery of combos like Jun Kazama (Tekken 2). There are no beam characters like Devil/Angel (Tekken 2) or True Ogre (Tekken 3) and instead the game relies on it's natural skill and charm to be good. It IS more difficult that the previous games, so if you don't like it, set it to easy. Something about this game that I found really clever was in the screen adjust, where you have an option to turn on or off what seems like anti-aliasing (Soft/Sharp). But the most incredible part is the balance. Characters are even, despite their differences. This is even more playable than the original Tekken (because there's no extra-long-throw-range Armor King). And the new Story Mode is a VERY welcome addition.

Tekken 3's finished already?PUH-LEASE!!!44670

Marcos Rivera from Monroe,Washington,USA says (8/May/2005):
Tekken 1 wastes your time. Don't count your chickens with Tekken 2. Tekken 3 is finished already? PUH-LEASE! But you are in for a great game when you play Tekken 4! The graphics are splendid, old chap! The music couldn't get any better! The fighting style is fantastic! With 10 hit combos added, this game gets more varieties of awesome moves. The characters bring back the old styles of the previous games. It is worth getting the game! It has so many different moves, fighters, stages, and modes that the fun will send your head spinning! Always boring things and stories in the previous Tekken games, but rent Tekken 4, see how fun it is, and buy the coolest fighting game that Namco has ever created for PlayStation 2! If I were to pick my favorite character(s), it/they would be Nina Williams, Steve Fox, and Jin Kazama. They... ROCK!!! My descriptions of the characters that ROCK are... 1: Nina Williams is a great fighter and also stylish. She is stylish in both looks and moves. I think that her Up-Right Square+Triangle throw is the bomb! 2: Steve Fox is a talented boxer who would make one of the best fighters for Tekken. He has good agility and awesome moves. My brother won 11 survival matches with him! 3: Jin makes a great fighter, but he doesn't have any 10 hit combos. That's all I can say. So my opinion is that Tekken 4 is a GREAT game!

Fantastic game, but Tekken 3's better....36121

Lord Faarquad from NSW, Australia says (26/Nov/2003):
The graphics are some of the best on PS2 to-date. Every character has different facial animations, clothes and hair flap around during the fight, pillars and statues can be smashed aswell as innocent onlookers. Too bad most of the character's outfits are amazingly stupid looking. From Marduk's skin tight fluro green pants to Heihachi's g-string nappie a lot of characters aren't as cool as they should of been. At least there's two different outfit options. The inclusion of walls to be bashed against is more realistic but it leads to cheap moves. The music isn't very good and there's not enough characters but Tekken Force has been greatly improved. Training is lame addition but practice is great with wealth of options to help improve your Tekken skills. There's heaps of moves and if you're a very good player and happen to know someone else that is as good as you multi player fights can be great fun. Altogether this game is a great fighting game but once all the characters have been unlocked (which doesn't take long) and you've seen all the end movies (which do not compare with Tekken 3's) it can get boring. Still a great game though.

OK get this game or else!!!!10538

shawn from rocky point, nc, usa says (22/Oct/2002):
I was over at best buy last Sunday with 300 dollars that should have gone to paying of a lawyer for getting a ticket... ha, It just so happened that amoung the games presenting themselfs as a new definition in gaming, I took home Tekken 4 instead (having been a fan of the series since the arcade version). I figured well "it's gotta be better than Virtua Fighter"! Needless to say stole back my ps2 from my little brother and popped in the game. OPENING CINAMA what else is there to say but bad-a$$!! The game offered a lot more than i expected.
HUGE LEVELS: though still kinda restrained because you can't roam freely.
GRAPHIX: the water effecs i rate up there with those of Splashdown and Virtua Fighter for PS2. Backgrounds at times seemed kinda hazy but when you fighting at a fast paste WHAT ISN'T
SOUND: i gotta say i'm a huge techno fan and some the tracks i loved and others weren't so appealing, though the old oohs and ahhs are still intact
CHARACTERS: all i can say is namco has never dissapointed me with coming up with the biggest bad a$$es in history

anyone who loves the fighting genre of games this is a must buy!

good soild fighting game10538

$Teddy$ from milwaukee says (27/Jun/2004):
tekken 4 is good. i got it for $20, that is well worth it. its a good solid fighting with a good and interesting fighting engine. they made alot of changes though with part 4. to begin with everybody looks difeerent! law doesnt look as cool any more. the graphics could be a little better, but they are still perfect in a dcent way. considering the only other tekken game i have owned is tekken tag tornement, it seemes like a small character line up. they added like 3 or 4 new people to fight with. they also tried to make tekken with a story. the story are goffy as hell and seem random, but they are really funny though. i wouldnt buy this game for more than $30. i got it for twenty. but this is a good game. tekken has had always a unique and cool fighting system and the only game i know where you use triangle circle x and square on a angle! but that ia kinda neat. you know what i mean if you know tekken. but im telling you i have been playing games since '90 and i know games. tekken 4 is a great fighting game to add to your video game libary!

First Time playing Tekken, and maybe last.20164

Antimatter from Centralia, IL says (29/Mar/2003):
After playing Virtua Fighter 4 and Marvel Vs. Capcom, I thought it would be cool to try Tekken 4. Sadly I was very wrong. The graphics are ok, but like some of you say without the details (blood, grunts, bruises, broken bones and missing teeth.) the game is terrible. I couldn't agree with you more. I was terribly dissapointed with the way the whole game was put together. So far I've seen close to 10 characters. ONLY 10! Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 has 56!! I mean come on. Where's the variety? Another thing I hate about it is the slow, weak, and rather tacky moves. I will credit them for adding two punches and two kicks. Great job going high tech there boys. ;) Another thing that stinks is there is NOOOO analog controls! I've played a few games like that but that was NES ans SNES. Antiques! haha. Another thing that bothers me is that there is not any cheats that I can find. Unless "Beat Story Mode" is a cheat code. So out of all my complaints what is good about it?

Namco loosing quality16488

Sevis from Barcelona, Spain says (28/Jan/2003):
This game is with diference the worst in tekken saga. Tekken 4 is cool, but only because is tekken. I still can't understand why namco didn't put all caracters of the tekken saga, and made two new players, keep some from tekken 3 and trhow good caracters like gon, gun jack or ogre and put someone from the older versions.
If you compare with tekken 3, the game is slower and there are no improvements on the caracter movements, except for the graphics. The music is really bad at the most of stages. But the worst thing is that there are so few caracters to choose. It makes the game boring when you play many times. The ends of the story mode are really boring, they always scape from heihachi or something like that, but there are no impact ends like bryan or hwoarang in tekken 3. I like this game, but only because is tekken, and i love it. I hope Namco will change the mind and the next tekken will be made not only to earn money. Put some art on the game.

The True King of Fighters!10436

Sarah from Roswell, Georgia, USA says (19/Oct/2002):
Tekken 4 has risen above all fighting games. The characters all have their own unique moves and stories, making this game an experience to remember. The shocking and wonderfully smooth graphics will floor you, there's no doubt about that. The characters even have multiple outfits to wear! While rather random, it does add a nice touch. The ending movies are excellent, and the music in some of them is nothing short of perfect. After playing ths game for about 45 minutes, I realized that Tekken 4 provides for the player something Virtua Fighter 4 lacked: Motivation. Every time you beat Story Mode as a character, you unlock a new and powerful one. The fights can get frustrating, but they can be conquered. Once you beat Story Mode as a tough character of as your favorite character, you'll feel nothing but immense satisfaction as you watch the ending movie runs. If you don't already have this game, go out and buy it.

A Whole Piece of Namco in the Trash!21375

Loco Gamer from Upper Marlboro, MD says (15/Apr/2003):
I went to Blockbuster last Saturday to get this game and I was very eager and all. I wasn't thinking about how Tekken 4 could have just decreased it's quatlity so bad. Tekken usually gets better with ever new release. I was always a Virtua Fighter and Tekken fan, but I liked Tekken even more. This game has the most boring characters and the most choppy moves ever developed. The game is missing Gun Jack too. The story of the game is ok, but the ending movies for each character didn't make any darn bit of sense. The game's music is so pathetic that I put it on zero. I like the stages like the Arena, Underground Fight Club, Parking Area, Jungle, and the Beach. I'm very dissappointed in Namco for taking away all the good things about Tekken. I do like the Tekken Force mode and Survival, but thats it. The rest of the game is trash. I'm glad I rented the game too.

This Game Smells Like Soap.40126

Pinkflamingo from Bradley IL U.S.A. says (2/Apr/2004):
I hated this game it was horrible. It reminded me of dooky. So many times I wanted to bang my head into a rock because of the pure stupidity of this game. No stinkin part of the game was worth the hand cramps I got from playing it. I'd rather play Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg than this peice of crap. Mr misquito rated higher on my list of top tens than this did. I don't know what queefer made this game but I hated It. The graphics were horrible, the enviromenst sucked, in fact the most holy thing I've ever done was to stop playing this game. I think the designers could of done a much better job on the fighting aspects of the game and I hated how some players could horribly over power others. I needed a hit just to keep myself from destoying the PS2.

best game play fighter available31341

falker from u.s.a. says (31/Aug/2003):
this game is the most in depth fighting game ive ever played. Tekken 4 has a lot of very precise counters and attacks that move it far ahead of other games, you dont just have to memorize the moves...thats just the beginning...you need to practice timing, and thats the hard part, you think you're a champ and then all the sudden you can get beat because someones timing is better than your's.The best thing about tekken 4 is when you have a chance to play against a friend, the fights get so frantic it makes your finger's almost bleed after the torture of slamming and banging on the controllers.Buy this game, the creators put a lot of work into each character, the game play, and unlocking secrets is fun as well.Oh and the girlz are hot and nice graphics also

Tekken 4 - well balanced and takes skillz37787

MaDDoN from Oslo, Norway says (2/Jan/2004):
Well I've always liked Tekken - probably always will to.
They did a real good job balancing all the players against each other making sure that you always can find a weak spot in anyones gameplay. If you get your ass kicked it's simply because you either don't have the timing right, don't have reaction time or just don't know which moves that can punish other moves. Well even if the sound sucks you can have extremely many fun hours puzzeling with different players and making your own strings, combos and juggles. But if your used to play alone don't by this game, or better yet don't bey any fighting game cause they will get boring. If you (like me) always play with friends this IS the game. I can play it for hours and hours when playing humans.

Not that great.25959

Special Sauce from Georgia, USA says (22/Jun/2003):
I've heard a lot of people saying that this is the greatest fighting game ever, from the best line of fighting games ever. Personally, I never found either as entertaining as the original 3 Mortal Kombats from the Genesis. Sure, some of the characters are pretty awesome, but, all in all, I didn't think it even lived up to the Tekkens from the PS1. To tell you the truth, it was so easy, I beat it with every character on the hardest level within a week on a very limited time schedule. I've been doing this for a while, so I guess I'm a little better at it than the average guy, but even a beginner could do what I did after they learned the basics of the game. It's not a bad game, but it's just not that great.
