Loved it! =D | | God from New-Brunswick, Canada says (18/Feb/2003): | This is the first wrestling game I have ever played so far, but I was very impressed by it. The graphics were amazingly good, though some of the wrestlers didn't look quite as realistic as I had expected, like The Rock, Jazz and a few others. Season mode is great, unless of cours you don't have a memory card..wich can make it pretty hard. After you have played in season mode a few times, it does get a bit boring, the story lines are basically the same, if you're Jeff Hardy, Matt will do the EXACT same thing to you EVERY time! And usually, depending on who you are, near the start of the season one superstar will come to the ring to tel a "story" about some kid who came and asked for your autograph, blah blah blah. Create a superstar can be VERY difficult, especially if you are trying to make a female, they look really boxy in the ring-if you know what I mean. I must say the Royal Rumble is my favorite match in the game! You can be whoever you want, and pick your entry number. The Lumberjack match however, was not what I expected AT ALL! I thought it would be like "The Canadian Lumberjack Match" between Rob Van Dam and Triple H in 2002, where 20 other superstars were outside the ring with leather straps waiting for one of the two wresters to be knocked out of the ring so they could WHOOP THE CRAP out of them. Tag team matches can be VERY boring, especially when you have a partner who doesn't seem to want to tag you! He'll usually just end up loosing the match anyways. King Of The Ring, in season mode, is VERY boring in my opinion. The seven other superstars are usually fairly boring ones who have no good moves, and that makes the matches seem SO LONG! Worse than watching Lance Storm! With all that said, I think the game was very good, and hopefully the next one will have even MORE match types to chose from, like The Elimination Chamber, and more superstars, where was Tommy Dreamer, D'Lo Brown, Victoria, Terri? And now with all of the new ones, or ones who have just begun to be popular, such as Batista, Scott Steiner, Rey Mysterio JR and Jamie Noble.Ugh! And they really must fix Brock Lesnar! He looks like he has serious acne!
| I still say this game is awsome | | Owain Williams from Wales, UK says (18/Feb/2003): | As I have said before. "STOP COMPLAINING!" This is the best wrestling game ever. OK there are a few faults on there but that does not stop me from enjoying the game. The season mode is better than ever, I would much rather have 3 years in season mode to unlock stuff other than waste most of the time doing about 6 or 10 years wich is really stupid. Im almost done unlocking all the things that are to unlock in season mode and I had the PS2 with S.Y.M on X mass day, so that is 2 months of playing this game flat out, I hope to have unlocked all by the end of this month. And also a good person to do season with is Steve Austin you have more options with story lines I won't say a lot on that subject but it is worth havin a shot of being steve austin :)
| just had some more to say | | Mike from Sesser, Illinois, Usa says (16/Feb/2003): | so continued from my last review.... this game could use more of a storyline than just whats going on with your character, in real life theres not just one storyline, theres a bunch of stuff going on with all the wrestlers. And this could be huge, in career, put us in the life of a wwe superstar, dont make us walk around the lobby?!?..put us backstage, let us go anywhere and open any door, let someone walk up to us backstage and say "hey your match is next" let us walk up behind the curtain and wait for our turn to walk down the ramp. let us choose our own friends and enimies from any of the wwe superstars. by doing that we would then be able to interfere with any match at any time during the match just by running down the hall backstage, up to the "backstage" area, up the steps and run down the ramp. Also everbody that talks on the mic sounds stupid...in real life people that talk on the mic are entertaining, and here there...well not. And loose the little blue arrows backstage, thats stupid also lets see more than one superstar backstage...lets see them all like it would be in real life, just hanging out, or doing interviews, or whatever. I guess what im trying to say is....all these wrestling games have the same thing in common...they all make us (the gamer) look at it from a fans point of view, and no matter how hard you try thats the way it turns out everytime. we want to see it from the superstars point of view, what its really like being a wwe superstar, and what they go through day to day. Also instead of there being a black screen pause between entrances, lets see just the two entrances (the two wrestlers in the match) together, just one rolling into the next like it is in real life. and when someone interfers, make it more noticable, louder fan cheering, more emotional reaction from J.R and the King. even let there music play somtimes. I got alot more to say and alot more ideas to make the next one better. but im tierd of typing so im going to stop there. but if anyone that has anything to do with the creating of the games is reading this...take some of these things seriously and try them....i think any gamer would agree that these things would make the next one much better...possibly even off the hook and unmatchable!
| This Game Is The Best Game I Had Ever Had | | Dan Graham from Jamestown,N.Y.,USA says (15/Feb/2003): | This Game is great because the grafics atr so nice the people look real and the music and sparks are so cool. I like this game because of the season, and Creat a player.I like the season because the game is just like the tv in 2000-2003nd that was prety cool because i remember what happend and i just love the way the people come out to talk and it looks like im watching tv. I like when the begining when Flair and McMan do the draft thing. The other part i look is when you win a match at the PV you can unlock things. I like the creat a wrestler because ther are so many thing to pick from. The thing i like about the creat is you have alot of choises to pick from. The dislike about the creat a wrestler is that you don't have sting's paint or sting's wrestler. The wrestler's that would be real cool to put in this game are Goldberg, Sting, Owen Heart, Bret Heart, and Ray Msterio JR. But this game is awsome THAKS THQ very much
| This is the best | | SeNiC from va,usa says (15/Feb/2003): | It's a great great game the moves look awesome. and the first time you play season mode it's amazing. but the sad thing is that after you play it the first time it never changes only a small amount will change if you make different desisions. And like everyone says it's missing alot of stuff.this was the first smackdown I ever played so i was very surprised and pleased. smackdown shut your mouth got me back into watching wrestling.i've almost beat the game i only have two things to unlock.(Vince Mcmahan, and the divas video). the create a superstar is really cool but can be hard to work with.I love creating superstars I've made 10 and I'm working on another one.I've done 4 seasons and I'm working on my 5th.I'm using my created cruiserweight. If you like wrestling or fighting games or anything with an edge you gotta buy this game..........that's all
| the best one ever:and flaws i dont like!! | | Switchblade from LaMarque,Texas United States of America says (11/Feb/2003): | Smackdown 4 is the best wrestling game ever i love everyting about it but a few things.First like the years on story mode and that they dont have a few of wrestlers i like meanig Scott steiner bastita and a couple of others. And i dont like the entrances like ballareinas and shopping carts and moonwalking and s#*! like that.and the weapons are koo wish they had more like stop signs, kendo sticks, nightsticks, chains, and i wish they had interference when u start walking out on the rampway 2 the ring but out of all that i gave this game a 9 out of ten cuz it is bad a$$ and thats the bottom line cuzz Switchblade said so!!!
| WWE SHUT YOUR MOUTH! | | Piel Jar from Nigeria says (9/Feb/2003): | WWE SmackDown 4: Shut Your Mouth
With a list of refinements that can be made from the previous installment, SD4: SYM looks to be shaping up well.
Born on the PS2’s predecessor, the WWE (once WWF) Smackdown series has certainly evolved into quite a wrestling name. The latest installment, however, may have turned some fans away, with its fast-paced play and number of deficiencies. In hopes of redeeming its last attempt, Yuke’s is at work once more, and yet again its subtitle takes a line from the Rock’s large list of catch-phrases; this time it’s Shut Your Mouth.
Shut Your Mouth’s visual side is a tremendous improvement over last year’s Just Bring It and can easily hold its own against the visual powerhouse WWF Raw. JBI used basically the same engine as Know Your Role with a few augmentations, which was mainly why it lacked next-generation quality. With that said, Shut Your Mouth has touched up on a lot of different aspects in this department -- most notably, the fact that the wrestlers’ faces look very life-like, and we mean very. Booker T looks excellent and sports the same silly look he does in real life, while Hogan looks equally as impressive, with his wrinkles, goatee, and other facial subtleties all intact. Perhaps the most welcomed improvement is the new hair designing, which looks, moves, and interacts with the action much better. In addition to the graphical improvements to the wrestlers, other aspects have also been augmented to a nice degree. The arenas were created with an excruciating amount of detail, and the fans that fill up the ringside area are now rendered in 3D. While they don’t boast too much detail, the inclusion of 3D fans is still quite an improvement. The team at Yuke’s show their skills in the lighting department as well, especially during the intros, which are replete with fireworks, pyro, camera flashes, and more.
A huge change recently in the WWE has been the brand extension, wherein Ric Flair owns the Raw brand and has his gaggle of exclusive wrestlers, while Vince McMahon runs the Smackdown program and has his batch of wrestlers. Like always, this angle has already run its time, and Vince once again owns 100-percent of the company. However, as of now the brand extension will be incorporated into the game, and players can actually enter into the pool of wrestlers for the draft; that’s if this part of the game will still be included.
Players can partake in a pretty lengthy season, too: 2 years total. During this time, players will compete in four Raws and Smackdowns a month -- just as it happens on TV. There will also be the designated PPV for each month. In all, there will be 108 events total in a year, which sums up to a whopping 216 events in that given two year time-period. It’s almost inevitable that every wrestling game’s roster will be outdated in some form or fashion, mainly due to the seemingly week-by-week changes within the roster. In any case, Shut Your Mouth includes a pretty up-to-date roster, featuring newer stars such as Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash, and wrestlers from the Alliance angle are in as well, such as Booker T, Stacy Keibler, Lance Storm and Rob Van Dam. Scott Hall has already been made, but since he was recently fired, his character will most likely not be included in the final version; DDP is also likely to be absent, since he recently retired from the company. Hopefully some of the new talent that came from the WWE’s developmental centers will make the final roster, such as Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton. And the inclusion of Shawn Michaels (A.K.A. The Heart Break Kid) will be a necessity to make the roster feel complete.
The overall premise of Shut Your Mouth’s gameplay is pretty similar to previous installments; however, there have been a few things that have been refined and tweaked in the play mechanics, and this will play into the liking of many people's interest. The grapple system in earlier installments of the series was quite easy to execute and made the game a fast-paced, offensive-driven one, which many complained about. Yuke’s has listened to its fans and tweaked the grapple-system so that grappling is much harder to execute, since the wrestlers can no longer reach out as far. In addition, counterattacks can be made once an opponent fails in an attempt to grapple you. This facet of play makes the game a much slower, strategy-oriented game that depicts the matches on TV with more accuracy. The wrestlers will also have a vast move-set, and players can now pull off combos according to their real-life counterparts’. Furthermore, double- and triple-team moves will also be included, mainly for some of the larger matches. The ever-popular "What!?" taunt is in too, which may be a good or bad thing. Let’s just hope the fans don’t get too carried away with it; if they use it at all, that is.
Just Bring It included over 60 match variations, and, believe it or not, Shut Your Mouth will still include match types that are brand-new to the series. Such new matches included are Elimination Tag, Captain Fall Tornado Six-Man Tag, and Anywhere Slobberknocker. Elimination Tag is a match where whenever someone gets pinned, he has to leave the match, until only one man (or team) is left standing; Anywhere Slobberknocker is your traditional Slobberknocker with the stipulation that the action will take place backstage; and Captain Fall is a match where the key to winning lies in the pin-fall of the captain of the opposing team.
On another positive note, the animations for each wrestler are incredibly precise and were intricately detailed towards their real-life counterparts'. Rob Van Dam, for example, possesses all his cat-like maneuvers and also sports subtle moves that may normally go unnoticed, such as his bounce-like stance when in an immobile position, just as he is on TV. Likewise, other wrestlers boast all their movements and moves that, when seen, can be recognized right away by a fan of the sport. Other examples of this include the wide variation of moves, such as choke- and body-slams, which are performed accordingly by the various wrestlers.
Another new feature that’s been implemented involves better weapon usage, and it makes the use of them even more deadly, but more importantly, they now work more realistically. When a superstar has a weapon in his hand and grapples an opponent, there will be a specific animation according to which weapon that wrestler is holding. A table, for example, will make your wrestler set it down, put the opponent on top, and then proceed to an offensive move -- all in one smooth animation. A chair will set up a DDT where the opponent is then driven into it on the mat. This usage of weapons is always taken advantage of on TV, but never before has it really taken full effect in a video game, until now.
The Create-A-Wrestler mode has always been one of the integral features in the Smackdown series. Not only is it back, but it's back with tons of refining. The layering-model is now more accurate and allows for better looking layers of clothing. Moreover, tons of essential clothing articles, masks, and moves will also be in the cut to assist players in building their favorite superstars that don't make the roster -- Mankind, Shawn Michaels (a possibility), and the like. Also, wrestlers that don't make the final cut, due to time restraints, will also presumably have their gear, move-sets and repertoire included. We’re also hoping players can adjust and tweak-out current superstars’ looks. This would especially come in handy when players leave and enter the NWO. Hogan, for instance, still sports his black and white colors, although he’s been in his old red and yellow gimmick for quite some time now.
Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler will finally be included into a Smackdown game. However, we’re not sure as of yet if Cole and Tazz will commentate in the game, as Ross and Lawler may just be the only two. We’re hoping, though, that the color commentary will actually be entertaining this time, instead of the bland nonsense we got from Just Bring It: "Stone Cold...is a great wrestler."
Shut Your Mouth is undoubtedly a hugely anticipated title, and the sport of wrestling is so multi-faceted that developers really have their hands full when trying to make a video game rendition. Yuke’s latest endeavor into the squared-circle looks quite promising, and we’ll have more on the game as it becomes available
| GReat game !!!awsome | | Qadir from pakistan(lahore) says (8/Feb/2003): | Well smack down:shut your mouth is tthe best wwe game evr...if you have a ps2 plz buy it..game grafics r really heartbreaking but many things r missing no blood in a an hardcore match.n no rey mestirio, john cena,n whereas no new kane mask..well so amny mistakes have beeen done lots of superstars r not there..but by the way this game is gonno make bussiness Koool.............i loved the grafics they r really real ...........
| This game is awesome | | Matthew Hunter from Baltimore,MD USA says (8/Feb/2003): | well..... being the video game fan that i am and a hard critic, think that this game has its flaws. there arent many but there are some. like, the main one is how come you cant have a multi-player storyline????? that is the one that bothers me the most.also, where is rey mysterio and big poppa pump??if your not gonna put people in the game,at least put their call names in the game so we can create them.another thing, why cant we be the divas in a season??? or at least take them in as a manager.in the first smackdown ever made, you could create your own PPV, what happenend to that?? why dont the guys talk??? also in the next game i want to see blood. how do you beat the heck out of someone with a chair, bat, sledgehammer,etc..., and no blood comes from them??? why is the storyline so short and predictable?? it is only 2 yrs long. it could have at least been repeated over and over again. in the first smackdown! it was a twenty year storyline. now that was fun.
now to the good stuff.the graphics are awesome.the matrix effect is tight man. the entrances look and sound so real if you werent looking at the screen, you would think that wrestling is really on.the back of the case doesnt lie, it really is the deepest create-a-player mode ever.i cant think of anything missing from that, oh wait yes i can....... just kidding.the matche selection in the game is great too. eventhough a few are missing like the dungeon and a first blood match, it is still a great selection.anyway, i told you i was a serious game critic, but overall the game is great.and i love it.!!
| what the heck its true | | ant from usa says (8/Feb/2003): | this game rocks.the graphics are wicked.do you guys want to find out how to get FREEEKZILLA,RAY MYSTERIO,SCOTT HALL,and SCOTT STENIER.WELL,you have to beat season mode about 10 times with one memory card. it may seem hard but thats the sacrifice for agreat game.this is the best game since thriller came out.and thriller is not even a game.i just mean the freakin game is greaaaaaat.
| WOOOOO it's great! | | David Rodgers from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada says (7/Feb/2003): | This game for the PS2 is the best freakin game i have ever seen in my life I can't beleave were even talking about it. The fact that when you trow someone into the stairs it looks pretty crappy but otherwise I think this is the best game ever me and my friends have made eachother in this game and so far we rule. a couple mthings though why the hell can't you fight for titles in an exhibition match. it's so pathetic.
| The best ever damn thq game yet! | | Andy Wild from England, Manchester says (7/Feb/2003): | This game is amazing! The goods. You can climb the titantron and smash people through tables with a finisher like the lionsault or five star frog splash! You can drive motorbikes and cars, blow vans with people in up ! Do finishers like the edgecutution off ladders, put ladders in corners, and ddt people into them! You can lob people off hell in a cells, put them through easy, there is proper title belts! The wrestlers look real, there is loads of arenas with fireworks and lights, there is loads of attires and videos like DIVAS! You get that by doing 100 knowckouts in Slobber Knocker! Trish strips! You can cause fires in hardcore matches, hit people with trolleys and throw the trolleys 8into cars with mines on! This is truly a great game, you can even go on trains in hardcore matches! It is so good! Please, get this game you will love it!
| Goods, and the bads! | | Tom from England Warrington 59 Oldham Street says (6/Feb/2003): | This game is by far better than all the other wrestling games created by THQ. The graphics are totally awesome coz they look so damn real! Good job on Booker T! The season mode is very impressive, you can build your own drama and you get loads of title shots! The sound is most great, the commentary is brilliant! But can get annoying! The bads! The season only goes up to 2004! That sucks! Rey, Bischoff and Steiner aren't on it! You cannot start a season with HBK! The cage matches are boring, the tlc gets boring after a while to! Apart from that, it's a very brilliant game! IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO GET WEAPONS FROM UNDER THE RING, E-MAIL ME!
| It has it's flaws | | The Jizzo from Webster, Wisconsin says (6/Feb/2003): | Smackdown 4 is a great game, I have to admit, but it does have some details here and there that aren't that great. First of all, we all know that JBI was a horrible game when it came to story mode, and SYM inhanced that 10 fold! But the graphics for wrestler's faces are really bad. I mean, Steve Austin's face is great, sure, but look at Rhyno, or Chris Beniot, or even Triple H. JBI, in my opinion, had way better graphics. And the clothes in CAW are worse, as well (not to mention the lack of teeth, how dumb is that). The clothes are the exact same as Smackdown 2! And the entrances are missing, too. I mean, who cares about a cart or some ballerina? I love the DX entrance, sure, but what is the point in sticking in worthless entrances? They could of put in an old Undertaker entrance (Slow walking and raising the hand, or Ministry eye rolling with the arms up), or Hulk Hogan running down pointing at the crowd to go along with the music. The season mode is ok, i wish it were longer... I like the idea of attires and weapons were great as well. The facial morphing and hidden characters were a plus. And the moves are phenominal! I wish the stables were larger, but at least it has stables (some games don't). Probably my favorite feature is that there are more than 30 slots for created wrestlers. For JBI, I had to buy another memory card just to finish making characters. All in all, I gave this game a 7 out of 10, just cause I was feeling generous.
| Niko is gonna tell u this!!!! | | Niko from Bradley,IL USA says (5/Feb/2003): | Okay First i think it was the best game they have ever made yet! But they should have had Rey Mesterio, Scott Steiner, first blood and casket match! And also why can't u be girls in the Season mode! Why is there only 2 years in Season Mode! Well the graphics were good. There should have been blood. When you are playing season mode and u have a match on Raw or SmackDown i think there should be fireworks when they start the show! But the next Samckdown they come out w/ they better add this stuff in it!LOL! So anywayz it was the Best SmackDown game ever!
| Divas..... mmmmmmmm Trish Stratus. :) awsome .... | | Owain Williams from Wales, UK says (4/Feb/2003): | Does any one know how to unlock the Divas video on S.Y.M? If so can you let me know, and also, is the illimination chamber suppose to be on the game? Cuz I recon if that is there then Eric Bishoff should be on there to as he created the elliminaition chamber...
I have heard of one way to unlock the Divas video, and you have to get a 100 knockouts in slobber knocker. Is that true? If any one knows how to unlock anything that I have mentioned can you let me know plz :) thanks. And I still love this game....
Oh yea,
If you can't get a title shot when asking Vince or Flair in the V.I.P room try walking in as Kane in season mode and ask before the main event at Backlash in the first year. I tried this with Ric Flair on RAW and Kane had a title match at Backlash.... Flair should give you an opption of what title you wanna go for.. Hardcore, European, Tag Titles or Intercontinental. I don't think you can get the Undisupded Title.
AND THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE CAUSE O.W. SAID SO!!! SUCKAAAAAA....
| wheres rey? | | Simon Bullen from kent/england says (4/Feb/2003): | the games good but wheres hi flying rey mystirio and wheres scott stiener? apart from that its briliant, there are good story modes but the guys cant speak, good iquit matches but i dont know how you win them.id give the game a 7. i like it when in i quit match when you go into the parking lot and run into the big vans you explode.
| Bla bla bla bla bla!!!!! | | Owain Williams from Wales, Uk says (30/Jan/2003): | All this little nit pikin is getting on my nervs, we are lucky to have Wrestling games in the first place,ok I admit some of the game play is not cleverly done, such as, putting people onto atable, as soon as their on the table they seem to slide off instantly, and a couple of doggy moves here and there. All that aside, you gotta admit its a good game to play and I for one have enjoyed it and still do.
Other than that, I also think the creat a wrestler on it is amazing, during the past week I have put all my mates and myself onto smackdown 4 just for a laugh but I can't believe how life like we all are on it.... From "The Welsh Worrior" through to "The Big Ginger Freak" I truly do believe that we can be the next generation of W W E superstars ..... :)
Try it yourself and put ur ugly buts onto shut your mouth, maybe then you will see the benifits of the game. For most intros of all my mates and myself I have used the Original move sets that you unlock in season mode,Its more fun.
Have a nice day!!!!
| Look on the other side of things | | Joker from TX says (29/Jan/2003): | After writing previously and reading other reviews located on this page, there are things that need to be seriously discussed. Although THQ made many flaws in the game there are certain things that they are not able to control. An example of this is there are somethings that many reviewers are asking for that could not have been put in by THQ. Why would readers complain about the fact that Scott Steiner is not in the game? Steiner strickly came right after the game was released, so why blame THQ. Wrestlers like Scott Hall were fired during the construction of the game, so why complain on why he's not in there. If you want him so bad you can create him in the create a wrestler mode by placing all 7's for the head feature and face. An average person also has to think about the fact that a ps2 disc can only hold a certain about of memory of everyones wants. Although, I have to admit I gave my complaints in the last review,THQ can't be blamed for not putting things in on whats going to happen in the near future of the WWE, they are videogame designers, not writers for the WWE. Guys like Steiner can't be put in, unless he appeared on the show first, and Steiner had simply not been signed by the WWE during the construction of this game.
| Where are the Women | | Marco Bernardes from Toronto Canada says (26/Jan/2003): | As playstation enhances better games are developed which is really pushing the WWE Games to another level of expectancy. Intoducing a new brand gaming wwe has made its mark in the gaming industry. This game has everything from action to sex appeal to storylines. The graphics being digitaly enhanced are really breath taking due to the fact that the superstars are pointed down to the last detail. Nvertheless the WWE has degraded women, one again. In season mode women are just there for story lines, is that the treatment that the WWE Womem deserve even though some put their bodies on the line? But above all the game has brought as advertised.
