With a list of refinements that can be made from the previous installment, SD4: SYM looks to be shaping up well.
Born on the PS2’s predecessor, the WWE (once WWF) Smackdown series has certainly evolved into quite a wrestling name. The latest installment, however, may have turned some fans away, with its fast-paced play and number of deficiencies. In hopes of redeeming its last attempt, Yuke’s is at work once more, and yet again its subtitle takes a line from the Rock’s large list of catch-phrases; this time it’s Shut Your Mouth.
Shut Your Mouth’s visual side is a tremendous improvement over last year’s Just Bring It and can easily hold its own against the visual powerhouse WWF Raw. JBI used basically the same engine as Know Your Role with a few augmentations, which was mainly why it lacked next-generation quality. With that said, Shut Your Mouth has touched up on a lot of different aspects in this department -- most notably, the fact that the wrestlers’ faces look very life-like, and we mean very. Booker T looks excellent and sports the same silly look he does in real life, while Hogan looks equally as impressive, with his wrinkles, goatee, and other facial subtleties all intact. Perhaps the most welcomed improvement is the new hair designing, which looks, moves, and interacts with the action much better. In addition to the graphical improvements to the wrestlers, other aspects have also been augmented to a nice degree. The arenas were created with an excruciating amount of detail, and the fans that fill up the ringside area are now rendered in 3D. While they don’t boast too much detail, the inclusion of 3D fans is still quite an improvement. The team at Yuke’s show their skills in the lighting department as well, especially during the intros, which are replete with fireworks, pyro, camera flashes, and more.
A huge change recently in the WWE has been the brand extension, wherein Ric Flair owns the Raw brand and has his gaggle of exclusive wrestlers, while Vince McMahon runs the Smackdown program and has his batch of wrestlers. Like always, this angle has already run its time, and Vince once again owns 100-percent of the company. However, as of now the brand extension will be incorporated into the game, and players can actually enter into the pool of wrestlers for the draft; that’s if this part of the game will still be included.
Players can partake in a pretty lengthy season, too: 2 years total. During this time, players will compete in four Raws and Smackdowns a month -- just as it happens on TV. There will also be the designated PPV for each month. In all, there will be 108 events total in a year, which sums up to a whopping 216 events in that given two year time-period. It’s almost inevitable that every wrestling game’s roster will be outdated in some form or fashion, mainly due to the seemingly week-by-week changes within the roster. In any case, Shut Your Mouth includes a pretty up-to-date roster, featuring newer stars such as Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash, and wrestlers from the Alliance angle are in as well, such as Booker T, Stacy Keibler, Lance Storm and Rob Van Dam. Scott Hall has already been made, but since he was recently fired, his character will most likely not be included in the final version; DDP is also likely to be absent, since he recently retired from the company. Hopefully some of the new talent that came from the WWE’s developmental centers will make the final roster, such as Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton. And the inclusion of Shawn Michaels (A.K.A. The Heart Break Kid) will be a necessity to make the roster feel complete.
The overall premise of Shut Your Mouth’s gameplay is pretty similar to previous installments; however, there have been a few things that have been refined and tweaked in the play mechanics, and this will play into the liking of many people's interest. The grapple system in earlier installments of the series was quite easy to execute and made the game a fast-paced, offensive-driven one, which many complained about. Yuke’s has listened to its fans and tweaked the grapple-system so that grappling is much harder to execute, since the wrestlers can no longer reach out as far. In addition, counterattacks can be made once an opponent fails in an attempt to grapple you. This facet of play makes the game a much slower, strategy-oriented game that depicts the matches on TV with more accuracy. The wrestlers will also have a vast move-set, and players can now pull off combos according to their real-life counterparts’. Furthermore, double- and triple-team moves will also be included, mainly for some of the larger matches. The ever-popular "What!?" taunt is in too, which may be a good or bad thing. Let’s just hope the fans don’t get too carried away with it; if they use it at all, that is.
Just Bring It included over 60 match variations, and, believe it or not, Shut Your Mouth will still include match types that are brand-new to the series. Such new matches included are Elimination Tag, Captain Fall Tornado Six-Man Tag, and Anywhere Slobberknocker. Elimination Tag is a match where whenever someone gets pinned, he has to leave the match, until only one man (or team) is left standing; Anywhere Slobberknocker is your traditional Slobberknocker with the stipulation that the action will take place backstage; and Captain Fall is a match where the key to winning lies in the pin-fall of the captain of the opposing team.
On another positive note, the animations for each wrestler are incredibly precise and were intricately detailed towards their real-life counterparts'. Rob Van Dam, for example, possesses all his cat-like maneuvers and also sports subtle moves that may normally go unnoticed, such as his bounce-like stance when in an immobile position, just as he is on TV. Likewise, other wrestlers boast all their movements and moves that, when seen, can be recognized right away by a fan of the sport. Other examples of this include the wide variation of moves, such as choke- and body-slams, which are performed accordingly by the various wrestlers.
Another new feature that’s been implemented involves better weapon usage, and it makes the use of them even more deadly, but more importantly, they now work more realistically. When a superstar has a weapon in his hand and grapples an opponent, there will be a specific animation according to which weapon that wrestler is holding. A table, for example, will make your wrestler set it down, put the opponent on top, and then proceed to an offensive move -- all in one smooth animation. A chair will set up a DDT where the opponent is then driven into it on the mat. This usage of weapons is always taken advantage of on TV, but never before has it really taken full effect in a video game, until now.
The Create-A-Wrestler mode has always been one of the integral features in the Smackdown series. Not only is it back, but it's back with tons of refining. The layering-model is now more accurate and allows for better looking layers of clothing. Moreover, tons of essential clothing articles, masks, and moves will also be in the cut to assist players in building their favorite superstars that don't make the roster -- Mankind, Shawn Michaels (a possibility), and the like. Also, wrestlers that don't make the final cut, due to time restraints, will also presumably have their gear, move-sets and repertoire included. We’re also hoping players can adjust and tweak-out current superstars’ looks. This would especially come in handy when players leave and enter the NWO. Hogan, for instance, still sports his black and white colors, although he’s been in his old red and yellow gimmick for quite some time now.
Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler will finally be included into a Smackdown game. However, we’re not sure as of yet if Cole and Tazz will commentate in the game, as Ross and Lawler may just be the only two. We’re hoping, though, that the color commentary will actually be entertaining this time, instead of the bland nonsense we got from Just Bring It: "Stone Cold...is a great wrestler."
Shut Your Mouth is undoubtedly a hugely anticipated title, and the sport of wrestling is so multi-faceted that developers really have their hands full when trying to make a video game rendition. Yuke’s latest endeavor into the squared-circle looks quite promising, and we’ll have more on the game as it becomes available
| Needs Serious Improvement | | Raymond from Queens, New York says (24/Apr/2003): | GRAPHICS: The Graphics for SmackDown 4 Shut Your Mouth are very good but they look too stiff they need to be smoother and body movements shouldn't be so stiff. I notice that every now and then the womens breast "jiggles" but it doesn't look right it should look more like Dead Or Alive and the arenas seem kinda off scale for example the raw arena is missing the TNN logo and the RAW logo graphic moving in the 3 bottom titantrons is extremely repetitive and they all move the same way where on the show the RAW logo in the bottom 2 side titantrons move similar but the middle one doesn't and the RAW logo video in the bottom 3 titantrons does not repeat so fast.also wrestlemanias ramp should be longer.The name pop-ups that appear when a superstar is entering the ring are almost like the ones on the show but for some Pay-Per-Views they have some weird default pop up for the names that I have never seen before they need to get the real pop ups.The graphics for this game do not give it an authentic feel. Also created players should have teeth when you create them.
sound: The sound for this game is pretty basic. The announcers don't talk much so the game doesn't seem authentic again. The announcers should talk more as a matter of fact they should keep talking and not be so repetitive (like in WCW Mayhem) also it made no sense that since the wwe had the draft and had different announcers for each show that Jerry"The King" Lawler and Jim Ross announced the entire game. The game should have Jerry "The King" Lawler and Jim Ross for Raw, Michael Cole and Tazz for SmackDown, Lita and "The Coach" for Raw and Josh Matthews and Ernest "The Cat" Miller for Velocity. also needs to have full entrance themes since the storymode has it where superstars wait in the ring. Stars like Tajiri and Randy and also the hardyz Orton (there are others but I dont remember oh yeah also include Linda Mcmahon) don't have their real entrance themes which again lowers games authenticity.
GAMEPLAY: The gameplay is by far the worst gameplay ever made for a wrestling game. It doesn't even have all of the wrestlers moves that they use. When I create a wrestler I watch their matches and pick the moves AND ONLY THE MOVES! that I see them use during there matches and for favorite moves I choose the moves that they use to set up or attempt to finish off their opponents with and for finishers I use their main finishing move and for the second I choose Their move they use to set up for their finisher or if they have another finisher I use that. THQ spent there time loading superstars with flashy moves they barely use then they leave it where the players have to fix it.
lifespan: The games Storymode is very repetitive. It has 2 years(game wise) worth of matches but going into the second year the game repeats itself at armageddon and the game only has good storylines when your the world champion. Whatever happened to midcarder storylines? some people don't look right with the havyweight belt and eventually your forced to fight in a heavyweight title match in the end. Matches like the elimination chamber, Casket match and first bloods match need be added and if theres any I missed they can be found in Smackdown 2. The game needs blood because without it it isn't interestling and it needs to have it where you can enter women in the season, but designs on their clothes and it needs a womens belt. Also you should be ablt to choose wheither you want to be a manager or a wrestler in the season. the create a stable mode should have it where more than 3 people can be put in a stable. Entrances need to be more complete. Also the game should have it where you can download themesongs from your cds and it needs a create a belt and create a entrance mode it should also have it where you can watch entrance videos and entrance theme sons together full screen so if you choose one stars video and anothers theme you can figure out how it looks together before you finish with the superstar.
fun factor: the game is only interestling until you beat the storymode after that your stuck with unlocking everything and you have to go back through the storymode to do it. Tips on how game could be made more fun listed below. NO MERCY for N64 was way more fun. the create a manger mode from sd2 was fun it should be brought back.
ORIGINALITY: The game adds new moves every now and then but it still uses moves that have been seen in smackdown one and all they did to them was change the superstars reaction.
The problem this game has is keeping the players attention. In smackDown 2 (I would say 1 but theres isn't all too great) The create a Pay-Per-View mode was one of the most entertaining modes yet. It allowed you to make a 8 match Pay-Per-View event that would be rated upon the average of each matches rating. Whenever I got bored with the story mode I would play the Pay-Per-View mode and I loved to make Pay-Per-Views that would follow the one before it. I liked how the Pay-Per-View mode kept a record of the best matches that was ever made and the best P.P.V.s ever made. It should be brought back in SmackDown 5 and it should allow you to choose the arena that your in and pick who announces at the P.P.V. players should be able to defend championship belts here and in the enibition mode and the P.P.V. mode should have short cut scenes that link into the storymode. Women seem highly deprived in smackdown 4 : You cant put words on their clothes, theres no womens belt and they dont have any exclusive sayings from announcers that needs work.
For a create a belt mode there should first be a list that says how many people can win this belt at once (up to 3 or up to 5 should be allowed) then have it where you can choose the outline of the belt the create a text and create a nameplate(for the wrestlers name) then name the belt and rate its importance. players should be able to attack opponents.on the way to the ramp, also there should be a create a titantron mode. there could be a list of screens you can choose and a list of out lines and a list of stages and ramps and rings and everyting.
and you should be able to create a show that way. (this would make the P.P.V. mode fantastic. You should be able to go into the crowd. players should be able to get more than 4 wepons from ringside and there should be a toleration meter on the name meter for example if a superstars partner interferes in a match and hits their opponent the toleration meter begins to fill and when it first starts to fill the ref should make the stars partener leave but if he keeps coming in and hitting the stars opponent then the meter of his partners fills up and when it fills up completely the patner is disqualified . this should also apply for if a superstar hits their opponenent with a chair in a match that has dqs or if they hit the ref.
Superstars should also walk out with their managers and the season mode should be multi playered. also there should be a menu in the game that says draft and when you go into it you can edit stars drafted to RAW/Heat and SmackDown/Velocity. then when you go into an exhibition or a season mode there could be a RAW/Heat list of stars and a Smackdown/Velocity list of stars that way a star from smackdown can't wrestle a star from raw. Also in the season mode for SD4 the draft dosn't last long but in SD5 it should have the draft the way it is on tv. there should also be a bra and panties match since you have no choice but to make stars wear underwear under their clothes.
Also THQ should put the wwe logo in the bottom left corner of the sceen at all times and stop playing back ground music during matches and cut scenes its annoying and its not realistic.

ok, smackdown shut your mouth is a good game, but theres a lot of bad things about it!
1) i think that create an entrance should be in the game, like adding explosions and timing it all. Also, your opponent should be in the ring when you come down, or if you come down first, you wait in the ring.
2) hell in a cell was a big improvement, but there should of been weapons under the ring like sledgehammers, etc.
3) a lot of people have been wanting blood, and i couldnt agree more. i think the reason they cant put it in is cuz it isnt licensed or something.
4) at the time this was made, all the superstars were put into it, but when it came out a load of new people came into it. Rey Mysterio was definetly needed, and hopefully he'll be in the next one. who else was needed? oh yeah John Cena. he was actually programmed into the game on C.A.W, but i hate making current wrestlers up, because when it comes to the moves, it takes too long. some of the old wrestlers should be in, the true legends! it would be good to put new wrestlers like brock lesnar against people like mick foley. i've just read that jeff hardy has left WWE, so hopefully, he'll be in smackdown 5.
5) now size difference was a big problem, it was really stupid in sd4! a typical match - spike dudley vs big show........this says it all. how could spike even get show down?!?! hes 500 pounds for freeks sake! this should be sorted out!
6) table matches should be a lot harder! me and my brother play these all the time, and when u get put on the table, you know ur gonna go through it! the table breaks in the same place aswell, so if your going to powerbomb them through the table, the table should smash into thousands of peices! if anybody remembers the casket matches in old games, then that was hard to get ppl into it, so maybe if it was like that.......oh yeah, 3D through the table!
7) when someone went for the pin, and only got a 2 count on sd4, they got straight back up and carried on like it was the start of the match. they should at least be slowed down.
8) royal rumble should be improved. you should be able to go under the bottom rope to get weapons.
9) cage - i thought you could at least open the door! you should be able to climb between the rope and cage......i dont know why but its on telly. u shud also be able to smash ppl into the cage. when you climb the to the top of the cage, it climbs down automatically....what if you dont want to. i want to frog splash someone from the top, or grapple at the top without going down.
10) more matches are needed. chain matches if anyone remembers (kane vs HHH ages ago), bra and panties, mud matches, tag team termoil, paddle/brass knuckles on a pole, blindfold match (wud that work?) and some other matchs from raw roulette. 2 on 1 slobber knocker, over the top challenge, casket match, elimination chamber - that would be phat!, hair vs hair match, and if possible, 30 man battle royal without all the names on the top, and mixed matches, like tlc hell in a cell etc. it would also be good if there were fun games to play, like beatin up a car, like in this other game.
11) in a tag match, if you hit your partner repeatedly, they should get really hacked off and come and bash ya! #
12) a lot more weapons are needed under the ring.....pins, signs, ladders, dustbins (which should crumple when you hit someone, and you should put them in the turnbuckles.), baseball bats, extinguisers, poles, brass knucks, trays, tellys, etc, ya get the idea.
13) wrestlers should be updated for their appearance, and whether they are heel or not. i hate jr saying how bad taker is, when hes a good guy now. maybe you could download attire from the net, and music,
overall view for the next game:
GAMEPLAY: more realistic
COMMENTARY: no repeats, should be about whats going on, moves named and talking about them, like JR goes "oh my god a devastating F-5 in real life"
SEASON: you should chose whether to make it short or long, cuz i personally hate season, and i want all the stuff unlocked and i cant be bothered going through it all the time. overall for season though, its good, nice storys, but it gets boring!
SOUND: more chants, more move sound, more weapon sound.
GRAPHICS: yeah, very good, i especially like the matrix effect. does look like a game tho, should be more life like.
ORIGINALITY: this game gets boring after you keep buying the next one up, but it is good to buy an improvement to the last one. season mode is copying WWE so maybe they could make new storylines up for that.
FUN FACTOR: i love this game! outta ten i give it 8!
| the good, the bad, & the ugly | | robert from las vegas, NV says (20/Mar/2003): | wwe smackdown shut your mouth was a good game. i think i know alot about wrestling games cause i own every wrestling game for psone or 2, except wcw nitro....really didnt like that one. i have alot of experience with smackdowns, ive owned all 3 and have made over 300 created characters (had the 12 page memory card, 12 created characters per page for the first 2) by far this one is the best wrestling game. compared to others (wcw, legends, raw) the move system is the best. the graphics and game play have improved. but i do have a few problems. first where is the multi player seasons? they had it n the first smackdown, and it sucked but it was still there. now they have the character more involved, wheres the 2 player mode for it? another thing missin from the first, the ability to name your favorite moves and your finishers and it would show up at the bottom. that was great. it had a few flaws in it, but im sure they can work that out. and creating ppvs was nice and being able to defend your belt on an exibition match, nw you dont even carry out the belt if your the champ and in an exibition match. what about talking? why cant they contact the creators of final fanstasy games and get good dialogue? and the commentary really suck. how about the ability to read a created guys name? and the moves....why dont they look elsewhere for NEW moves? like NWA/TNA and others smaller organizations where they are more creative. especially double team moves. they came out with a couple of new moves but there is so many moves out there. they got weak move like the european uppercut, which they can improve, but as it is it doesnt even make them dizzy. hell they are even missing some from the companies they took over! ECW....how about the problem solver?(opponent lifted over ones shoulders and DDTed by the other) sandmans white russian leg sweep with the cane? sabus springboard leg drop? stinger spash? also they can add moves on the ring apron like a ddt or rhynos piledriver. how about the ability to do finishers of the ladder or top of cage like the swanton? you can do it off the smackdown fist but not a ladder? speaking of ladder, loved the corner moves with the ladder and the ability to pull the opponent off the belt should they reach it. how about a double tem special for a stable like the dudleys 3d rather than have it as a normal move. wheres the conchairto? the improvement with weapons was phenomenal but there is also room for improvement. like moves thru a table...you cant even gore someone thru a table ad make it look good! add more moves to the table in the corner like the ladder in the corner... AT LEAST! also, blood would really improve the game as well. how about more secret characters and better moves to unlock? i unlocked themoves and some were the same as in the previous smackdown...no surprise. i mean i know funk is a legend, but why would i want to unlock a spinnng toe hold that is a special move only? improve the variation between specials and normal moves too. when choosing a special have a categories like you have "roughneck" "speedy" and a special category to make it easier to find the specials. make it able to unlock people like goldberg and sting and sabu and sandman. make it so you would have to play the season to use them at all. what was the deal in unlocking nash when i could play him anyway? make the story lines more realistic, have feuds that lead up to matches better, get jumped, and what happened to the 2 minute backstage brawl thing? and not just with the player that you control, the whole rosters feuds. i could probably go on and on, i told you i know alot about video games and wrestling and you mixed them both. it might seem i was unhapy with the game, but far from it. it was the best wrestling game i have ever played. there is just alot of things that could be fixed. all in all i do give smackdown shut your mouth a 8 out of 10.
| WWE SMACKDOWN SHUT YOUR MOUTH POWERBOMBS ONTO YOUR STATION! | | Richard Minor from England Telford Shropshire says (24/Dec/2002): | If its one thing THQ have proven since they snapped up the WWE licence from Acklaim many moons ago its that they know how to create a wrestling videogame that was more then just simple one dimensional fighting. After setting developers Yukes to work on a WWE game for Playstation one, it was clear that wrestlign fans were in for a treat. The finished result was Smackdown a pixle perfect title that incorporated storylines an impressive career mode and a w3ealth of Superstars to play with. A sequel sooned followed and more then doubled its efforts with more modes and options then you could shake a stick at. So begins the Playstation 2 era despite last years Just bring it being better graphicly its short career mode and superstar roster were not what we the fans had expected. Yukes though knew that to truely give the fans what they wanted they had to do more then just go back to the drawing board they had to build a knew one! WWE shut your mouth is clearly a better game with an updated roster that sees the likes of Rob Van Dam, Booker T, Lance Storm, the Hurricane and even Hollywood Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash plus many more. What sets this apart from its other titles is the revamped career mode which gives you multiple paths to take your chosen superstar too. Following the brand extension when you start the game you can choose which superstars appear on which show and tailer them to your needs. As well as switch allegiences if the opportunity arises. You can forge friendships with other superstars and challenge for any of the titles that take your fancy. SYM though has you really have to earn it. You must win matches to get points to challenge for the straps. The only letdown is you cant play as the women in season mode. That being said you really find out who your friends are as you bump into variouse superstars backstage and have conversations depending on what you say or do will depend on wether they like or hate you. The hame is very graphicly sound with impressive arenas from Raw. Smackdown to the Pay Per View set ups which every effort has been made to ensure they look like a major event. Each superstar has his /her custom moves and mannerisms and none handle the same. Theres even commentary from Jr and Jerry the King Lawler. The game will take you ages as there are many unlockable items to find and secrets to uncover. lot has been put into the game and it really does show that yukes have done everything to recreate the feel of watching WWE on television. The entrances are 100mpercent right just as you would expect them to be. Each wrestler makes his/her way down to the ring the only way they know how. Albert walks methodiclay down whilst RVD comes down thumbs waving ready for battle the crowd in the palm of his hands. Thats right it seems Yukes have clearly down their homework to get everything right. SYM is one game you wont put down in a hurry as their is so much to keep you playing and the storylines some of which are based on 2002 will keep you hooked as they keep you guessing. WWE SYM is one hell of a game and clearly blows anyother out of the water at the moment and is well worth your attention.

| BEST WRESTLING GAME EVER BUT.................................. | | Kazze from New Zealand says (12/May/2003): | Okay, where do I start? Season mode. No womens title, that really sucked. The scenes, they should real. I hate it when someone like RVD comes out and demands respect, thats not RVD, thats the undertaker hello. And, I think that every wrestler should have their own storyline. It would be heaps better. Graphics, loved it and the realism in the entrances was primo. Create a player is cool but I just hate it how they have no teeth, "WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?", the Hurricanes says. I agree with everyone else when they say that spike dudley can't suplexe the big show. C'mon, more realism in the playing mode because it just doesn't look right. Scott hall? Where was he? X-pac wasn't even there when Hogan ran over the ambulancewith the Rock in it. And while Vince was talking about the poison in the NWO why couldn't you guys make him speak it, like record it from the RAW that had that scene in it. It would look a lot better then reading it because its like a chinese movie or something. The Royal Rumble is cool but, the fink should announce the first 2 entries as the participant who pulled numbers 1 & 2, not announce them in like they are entering a one on one match because then it doesn't look like a royal rumble if you know what I mean. Reversing the specials is kool but it needs more like for example, Hogan should miss the leg-drop when going for it, Shawn Micheals should have his leg caught when he goes for the sweet chin music and spun around like the real thing, Brock's F5 should be counted by getting off his shoulders, Booker T's scissors kick should be missed, Big Show and Kane's chokeslam should be countered by a kick in the gut or a reverse armbar like how Kurt does it for the smaller wrestlers and Trish Stratus' bulldog off the ropes should be throwin' away like in wrestling just to name a few. If the reversals were like that, Rhyno runs for the spear and you can reverse him into the pole and he falls out of the ring, then I think it would be more exiting to play. Hogan missing the leg drop would be so cool to see on a wrestling game. Sound is good and the graphics are crisp which makes the game wicked but then again there should be no stupid and silly music on this game even for an entrance. I mean for real man, who comes out dancing like a ballet dancer and who enters the ring sitting in a trolley?? Thats stupid, we're not looking to create a bunch of losers, we're looking to create wrestlers because thats the name of the game. If you guys can't think of any then put in some of the old music like from WWF(then) Attitude, the undertakers dark side song, mankinds song since you can creat him, warriors song, Dx, NOD just the old wrestlers and for the entances it can be the same, undertakers dark side entrance and give undertaker those dark side clothes to unlock during season or something and can it be possible this time to change the look of the superstars. I hate it that I can't give the rock a boldy because thats what he looks like now. More wrestlers need to be added too, Steiner, nidia, Sable now, Chyna, J. Noble, Cena, Mysterio, Chavo and get some of the old faces in too like Piper, Snuka, Doink would be funny just to surprise us fans on who is going to be unlocked next.......GOLDBERG definitiely has to be on the next smackdown. with The Rock and Goldberg on the cover staring down each other and little pics in the background with Hogan, Triple H, Kane, Taker, Angle, Brock, Booker, Steiner, Micheals, Nash, and Austin.Thin about it, it'll be the bomb. Other then those flaws the game is sweet.

The season mode is way better than just bring it's cuz u determine what happens!! I mean the season mode excatacly is on point!!! Like for example i was booker t and i had a undisputed title match wi undertaker < remove me > at judgement day cuz i beat edddie guerro for the #1 contender spot and it was a singles match untill eddie guerro approached me and asked for a rematch!! If he won the singles match would turn into a triple threat! I lost and < remove me > at judgement day it was a triple threat, thats defitnetly something that would happen in the wwe!!! Also during the entrance non like jbi howard finkle announces the type match, and also says the tag team partner and hi oppenent in those words when they come out!!!! But i do have just a few complaints!!! First tommy dreamer, mike awssome, and i think rey mysterio came about this time but either one of them were in the game!! But they say u can create them but whats the point if u dont have thier entrance themes and name called during entrance! Also i know for a fact jamie noble and nidia were around to be made and john cena not the rappen gimmick but the first impression john cena was around < remove me > at the time to be made in the game!! also the referee sometimes being invisible isnt good or the camera angle when its a singles match no one use to cause thats not the angle the other smackdowns were!! | The best wrestling game ever released! | | Rob Hirst from Sheffield, England says (8/May/2003): | Smackdown 4: Shut Your Mouth is the best wrestling game that has ever been released on the PS2. The graphics on the game are absoloutly perfect and for any true wrestling fan, there is no better. One of the great things of the game is the commentary from Jim Ross and Jerry "the king" Lawler. They react to what moves have been performed by shouting out the name of the move a few times to emphasize the greatness of the moves. The bad thing is though is that you dont hear them commentate a hell of a lot. The sound effects of the game are great too. From slaps on the chest by Ric Flair, to thuds on the ground from a chokeslam from Kane. There is background music while you are having matches which adds to the effect. In the season mode, when you are on Raw! the Raw music plays and when you are on Smackdown! the Smackdown music plays which is really brilliant! The gameplay is excellent! The moves on the game are so realistic you feel like your watching a real life match on the Raw T.V Show. They are really updated! From the newest Undertaker Chokeslam to the destructive F5! The problem is though, the WWE Superstar roster is very old, compared to the superstars you now see on Raw and Smackdown. If you are a mega wrestling fan like me you will probabaly never get bored with this game apart from the fact that you get fed up of being the same superstar over and over again. This game is really fun to play on and you will love the sorts of matches you can choose from; Hell in the Cell, Royal Rumble, 6 Man Battle Royal and 3 Stages of Hell. These are all really good matches and there's a lot, lot more! The fun never ends if you like to have various different matches, but if you're like me you will find its disapointing that there are matches in real life that you will not find in the game; Elimination Chamber, Triple Threat Tag Team Match and Buried Alive Matches. Another downfall to the game is that there is no blood on it. That is really disapointing! When it comes to match types, they are really quite origional. I only hope the next game will be more exciting. This game is of a high value and i respect that the game can't keep up to the realism of the superstars and match types as in real life but i still really love this game. It's incredible!

And this could be huge, in career, put us in the life of a wwe superstar, dont make us walk around the lobby?!?..put us backstage, let us go anywhere and open any door, let someone walk up to us backstage and say "hey your match is next" let us walk up behind the curtain and wait for our turn to walk down the ramp. let us choose our own friends and enimies from any of the wwe superstars. by doing that we would then be able to interfere with any match at any time during the match just by running down the hall backstage, up to the "backstage" area, up the steps and run down the ramp. Also everbody that talks on the mic sounds stupid...in real life people that talk on the mic are entertaining, and here there...well not. And loose the little blue arrows backstage, thats stupid also lets see more than one superstar backstage...lets see them all like it would be in real life, just hanging out, or doing interviews, or whatever. I guess what im trying to say is....all these wrestling games have the same thing in common...they all make us (the gamer) look at it from a fans point of view, and no matter how hard you try thats the way it turns out everytime. we want to see it from the superstars point of view, what its really like being a wwe superstar, and what they go through day to day. Also instead of there being a black screen pause between entrances, lets see just the two entrances (the two wrestlers in the match) together, just one rolling into the next like it is in real life. and when someone interfers, make it more noticable, louder fan cheering, more emotional reaction from J.R and the King. even let there music play somtimes. I got alot more to say and alot more ideas to make the next one better. but im tierd of typing so im going to stop there. but if anyone that has anything to do with the creating of the games is reading this...take some of these things seriously and try them....i think any gamer would agree that these things would make the next one much better...possibly even off the hook and unmatchable!

Yes it did!!!!!! The graphics are fantastic, better then anything you've seen before. Booker T, Brock Lesner, Triple H are all so life like its scary. The entrances are incredible. They have all the video's and pyro, its like watching the damn show!!!!! There are shed loads of match types, from ur single 2 street fight 2 6 man tag 2 6 man Hell in a Cell!!!!!!!!!!! All are done in amazing detail with realistic blows taken, when u hit them with a chair, the sickening thud, pain and drop are all like the real thing, and they stay down for a decent amount of ttime, unlike previous games.All your superstars moves are there, the Rock and Taker are particularly good in that department as well as RVD, a great asset to this game.A special mention for the slobber knocker mode, you will be beside yourself trying to get the 100 knockouts to unlock the divas movie, which is worth unlocking belive me!!!!! The story mode is superb, it takes real life storylines as well as original ones, the detail and choices u can make are outstanding and is very in depth compared to SmackDown 2, with very little repeating.There's nothing like winning and retaining the Undisputed Title and after matches u can attack the loser, or just walk away in victory instead of the usual cut off with other wrestling games.The faults?? Well theres no Bischoff,Rey, Steiner,Bautista,Cena,Victoria or Nina which doesn't make sense since they have Stephanie McMahon's general manager video and D-Von is the reverend D-Von.The commentary is good but misguided e,g. JR says the Big Show is throwing u around like garbage but ur kicking his ass. There is also no Cole or Tazz commentary which would have added to the realism.Also u cannot pick ur opponent to face u, making it difficult to do SmackDown finishers, still an excellent feature is being able to do ur oppenents finishing move.
Overall this is an excellent game and there is no better out there, the only things are missing wrestlers, no cole & tazz commentary and being unable to pick ur oppenet up to face you.Otherwise this is perfect, SmackDwon 5 will have to go along way to beat this.

The graphics were amazingly good, though some of the wrestlers didn't look quite as realistic as I had expected, like The Rock, Jazz and a few others. Season mode is great, unless of cours you don't have a memory card..wich can make it pretty hard. After you have played in season mode a few times, it does get a bit boring, the story lines are basically the same, if you're Jeff Hardy, Matt will do the EXACT same thing to you EVERY time! And usually, depending on who you are, near the start of the season one superstar will come to the ring to tel a "story" about some kid who came and asked for your autograph, blah blah blah. Create a superstar can be VERY difficult, especially if you are trying to make a female, they look really boxy in the ring-if you know what I mean. I must say the Royal Rumble is my favorite match in the game! You can be whoever you want, and pick your entry number. The Lumberjack match however, was not what I expected AT ALL! I thought it would be like "The Canadian Lumberjack Match" between Rob Van Dam and Triple H in 2002, where 20 other superstars were outside the ring with leather straps waiting for one of the two wresters to be knocked out of the ring so they could WHOOP THE CRAP out of them. Tag team matches can be VERY boring, especially when you have a partner who doesn't seem to want to tag you! He'll usually just end up loosing the match anyways. King Of The Ring, in season mode, is VERY boring in my opinion. The seven other superstars are usually fairly boring ones who have no good moves, and that makes the matches seem SO LONG! Worse than watching Lance Storm! With all that said, I think the game was very good, and hopefully the next one will have even MORE match types to chose from, like The Elimination Chamber, and more superstars, where was Tommy Dreamer, D'Lo Brown, Victoria, Terri? And now with all of the new ones, or ones who have just begun to be popular, such as Batista, Scott Steiner, Rey Mysterio JR and Jamie Noble.Ugh! And they really must fix Brock Lesnar! He looks like he has serious acne!

I LIKE SD4 BECAUSE YOU HAVE ACCES TO ALOT OF GOOD WRESELERS LIKE HARDCOREHOLLY AND BILLY GUN. And had announcers who talk thru the whole match. They also introduce your character when there music went on. Like they said weinght at 250 pounds from miami florida the peoples champion THE rock. And also bring back the matches that were in smackdown know your role 2. Like the casket match. Anywhere fall pin. 2 player season mode. And like a 3 year season. And challenge for any title during excibition. And be a women in season. When you create a wreseler you should have the option of telling there hometown and weight, and the computer should say there name no matter what it is and where they are from.
During season mode you should have people come down to the ring and announce the match. If you are in a storyline with someone they should come down to the ring and interfere or attack you backstage. Or see whats going on with the other superstars. And have more weeks in a month like 5 or 6. Have more recent superstars even if they retired or are out ina an injury. Like eugene,JBL,Tyson tomcost, paul london and mordokine,shane mcahmon ,chavo guerrero sr.,billy kidman,nidia and jamie noval, FBI, and so many more. And have tag team turmoil. Add more titles . Like the european champion and the lightheavyweight champion.And have unlimited weapons under the ring even the titles if one of the superstars is a champion. And new weapons like pipes,barbwired bats,bats,glass things and other stuff. And also make the cage matches more interesting like real life. Like when you irishwhip them into it they get hurt badly like start bledding after a lot of punishment. And open the cage door. And you can brake the opponent into the barracade and into the fans and hit the fans. And finnally they have internal bleeding and you can brake there back or ankles or knock them out cold that they loose the match. And use the gas and fuel to burn them and ambulances matches. And realife storyline even when kane burn good old J.R.So please add all this stuff to sd6. Thank you big wreseler fan
| Shut Your Mouth, and Just Bring It. SUCKUH! | | Jargyn Van Strangleford from Hole in the Ground says (8/Dec/2002): | Shut Your Mouth is probably the most advanced WWE game to date. One of the reasons wh I like it. The thing I like is putting people through tables. In Just In bring it, the only things you could do was powerbomb, or do an arial move when you put them through a table. In Shut Your Mouth, you can do just about anything. Not everything puts them through the table, but it's still good to know I can do more than a powerbomb. Plus, you get out three columns of empty slots to create characters! That's a heck of a lot better than Just Bring It's twelve slot principle. I'm not saying twelve isn't a lot, but it isn't enough for my wide array of ideas for custome wrestlers. While in JBI, I had to delete a character I liked the least, SYM has a lot more. I imagine I'll run out of ideas before I use up all the slots. And Season's a lot more fun in SYM than JBI. There's more length, more variety, and I love variety! The only problem I have with SYM's wandering around backstage before the match is that sometimes I get lost beyond hope, and have to reset the PS2 because you can't exit out of there while you're still wandering around back there. Plus they should've used Neurotica's song for the King of the Ring like they did in real life. Really, the game's not THAT out of date yet.
Another problem I have with the game is the tag matches. Everytime I pin the guy, and I know I've finished him for good, his partner comes out and stomps me. Meanwhile, I'm done for, no chance to kick out, and my partner just stands there like he has no clue what he's doing out there in the first place! I HATE THAT! But when I get too frustrated with getting my butt kicked into the next episode of Raw, I can just tag in my partner, and let him either kick butt, or get his butt kicked. Plus the dialogue in Season mode is occasionally difficult to read. Thus making choices not as easy.
But it's still good. I give it a 9 out of 10 for all the good things, and because I'm a major WWE fan. I'm putting this on my Christmas list, right there next to Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance.
| It is 'The Game!' to get. | | Ash Chain from London, England says (26/Nov/2002): | THQ has excelled with WWE Smackdown (SYM), Shut Your Mouth. The computer A.I has far improved from WWE Smackdown! Just Bring It (JBI)! The most significant improvement is the abandonment of the pathetic Story Mode of that on Smackdown JBI. The season mode on SYM is far more in-depth. I’m in the year 2003 and still the storyline keeps twisting and changing. The season mode gives you the real feel of excitement, like that of watching 'real' wrestling, making you want to continue with your next week to find out the repercussions of your actions from previous RAW or SMACKDOWN. SYM is more about fine tuning, than original game play. The graphics are far improved, the sounds effects are more realistic, and the season mode is a vast improvement. It’s the fine tuning of the simplistic things, like when using a chair on someone's cranium, and it actually having some impact, instead of the opponent standing after six or seven vile head shots. Like I said the wrestle's A.I has improved as well, as well as even more individuality given to the wrestlers, Triple H's style of punching, Y2J's egotistical of arrogance, the Texas Rattlesnakes abusiveness. When fighting a computer opponent the computer adapts to what ever style the wrestle fights in, for instance The Rock's trademark 'Layeth The Smackdown' is far more widely used. You can also predict certain moves, i.e. if Rock has Smackdown and he has just propelled you toward the ropes, it is a safe bet there will be a spine-buster to follow, with a Peoples Elbow put in for good measure. I also personally like the touch of being able to use your opponents Smackdown move to add insult to injury by pressing L1 and L2. All in all, Smackdown Shut Your Mouth! is very much a complete game unlike JBI looked like when that was released a year ago, there is room for improvements but only minor ones, maybe a more lengthier line up of matches on RAW and Smackdown, especially at the main-event. But still cracking game, well worth the splashing the cash. Ash
| CAW needs to make time for SLEEP! | | diemdesigns from Jacksonville, USA says (18/Nov/2002): | This game is makes the superb wrestling gameplay aspect almost secondary to it's creativity of story and fun.
GRAPHICS: are superb and the intros are captured perfectly to give the game a real venue appeal. The player models are well done. I'm not sure what's wrong with the female characters, they look funny around the eyes. And I don't care about How bad the crowd is, I didn't buy it for the crowd.
CAW: I AM HOOKED LIKE A BAD DRUG. The CAW is so in depth I was able to create The Hulk and he towers even the The 7'2 characters, forgive the pun but it's "Incredible". I can spend hours on this alone, there are masks and paints of movie characters and super heroes, that gives you unlimited possibilities of created wrestlers.
GAMEPLAY: There are excellent movie angles for moves that makes this game a joy to watch as you play, the button configuration hasn't changed much from the older SDs and is simple for new players to pick up. With the multiple unlockables spread out between venues I can imagine playing season after season. I also think the collision control is well done so you can actually miss moves and get caught if you tried something to early.
SOUND: Good thing I don't mind the music otherwise I can see how this would be annoying. The sound on this game is the worst thing on the game otherwise I would think it's perfect. It's still a 10 to me but you can't give a game a 10 if there is a huge gap in quality like in this area. The commentary is okay, but doesn't seem as intelligent as like football games. Due to the speed of the games I doubt it will ever will be. I also think with WWE owning most of the wrestling world you would think they have rights to old time wrestler names to be used in the CAW, for the announcers to say. It's hard to blame the game itself for the sound since console technology is probably the reason for this area of mediocrity.

| Game kicked ass but if the story line didn't follow wrestling story line exactly and if the release date was held another 3 to 4 mounths this game would have been a ten. Also his enterence where he flies out of the floor is in the game, so every part of Rey for you fan he's is in there figure out how to get him, just a hint use the damn card and look up on a cheat who's what number unlocks what past star. Now by holding the release dates a lot of great things ya'll knew were going to happen could have made it onto the game making the best ever fighting game instead of making a great game that will emsure your pockets get fatter at the release of the next on. No reason that John Cena didn't make if if Randy Orton did. Team Angle that's been huge for your story line, they might have been too late, but come on Valbowski,faarooq, god sake stasiak. But no Victoria or Dawn Marie- Yall really need to hold your games a little longer to make sure the wrestlers people want get on these games-My voted are for Brian Kindrick and your cruiserweight department is a joke- these guys night in and out do 50 times more dangerous stuff, recruit more make cruiserweight a major thing sorta when rickey "the Dragon" steamboat was around, there was not a cruiserweight but he would have been the king of them all/ get more Rey Mysterio's he's a top money maker for you besides the big dogs. Undertaker was the Champion,atthat time the Rock was the Champion. Rvd was the Intercontinental,at that time Eddie Guerrero was the Champion. Christian was Storm were the current champs. William Regal was the European champ,at that time Spike was the european champ. Bradshaw was the current Champ.Hurricane was the Crusierweight,at that time Noble was the Champion and he wasnt even in the game! There was no womens championship. They shouldnt had Chris Nowinski and Batista in the game too. and you should be able to put more then 3 people in a stable. Because there are people in a group that have more then 3 people in a stable. The Unamericans back a while ago had 4 people in there group they had Test,Christian,Lance Storm and William Regal, you could have put them in a stable. And I dont like the way you have the No#1 contender matchs. I was Brock Lesner in the season mode and I one the WWE Championship and I'm getting guys like Cheif Morley (Big Bowboski) and Jeff Hardy and all those guys that dont even deserve a shot for the title. And It is like impossible to win the Royal Rumble , like if you had a perfect season or almost perfect season you would be entered in the Royal Rumble at #15 or lower. And at Wrestlemania X8 hollywood Hulk Hogan is like impossible to win. The ladder matches are crap when you wanna have a ladder match you have to grab a belt you shouldnt be able to grab a belt if your not even the champ. And I dont like how you made HBK the RAW General Manager When Eric Bischof is the Manager. And on my copy of Smackdown shut your mouth the music on my game ether skips or doesnt even play at all. But everything else is pretty good I like how you can throw them into cars and they blow up and how you can throw them into the water tank and it explodes and all that cool hardcore stuff. Thanx
