The Sims - great game, could be better!!! | | Alex from St.Leonards, East Sussex, UK says (20/Mar/2003): | In my opinion The Sims is a great game on the PS 2 for Maxis and EA to get started with the conversion. But I think that in order to maintain the interest they need to drasticly expand the game. Compared to games such as GTA : Vice City and Smackdown : Shut Your Mouth, the game is a little limited. Vice City had a much larger area to explore and use with a lot more items and Smackdown : Shut Your Mouth had better character design features. The characters in Vice City also had better meshes and movements (with the exeption of the silly running part..hehe).
The Sims is too limited with respect to creating your scenery too. It could also do with creating multiple story buildings since not everyone lives/works in bungalows in real life...lol.
I'd also like to see the content from the PC Expansion packs put into a Sims PS 2 version with added versitility to the character designer. A more adult orientated part would be nice too (password protection, parhaps, like with DVDs so kids can't gain access to such material but still use the game in a more tamer mode).
Other than the above mentioned flaws, the game performs well and can be mastered fairly quickly. There are also some handy cheats, but nothing spectacular in that region - only all objects for free, unlock all 2 player items, that sort of thing.
You'll have to look for the cheats yourself useing a search engine or ask a friend.
My fave parts of The Sims include : setting up/controlling relationships, creating your own characters and watching how they behave/interact with other characters and objects, creating your own properties and seeing if your Sims like it, Generally watching your Sim's reactions to differant things.
The layout and interface is good too, I love the rotational features of all characters and objects and the abbility to move round and watch everything from various angles - either close up or from a distance/bird's eye view.
I'd say this game is kinda like Big Brother/Eastenders/Fresh Prince of Bell Air/Friends type of set up, but doesn't need any of the geeks in it if you don't want it to...hehehe. (ie Fresh Prince without Carlton would be a bonus...lol).
I can't see the game beating the likes of Vice City yet, but it could make Rockstar sweat a bit...lol. I think to seriously contend with Rockstar they need to put in at least some of the things I suggested. Nevertheless, I don't think too many will be disapointed with this game - it's certainly great for those who are new to The Sims.

| If the Sims is a drug, I guess I'm a junkie now | | One Eyed Jack from Dark Tranquility says (2/Apr/2003): | I'll admit, a game based on life doesn't seem that interesting at first, but I'll admit, once you start, there's no stopping. Their little Sim language reminds me of the Tazmnian devil, and since I'm a fan of that particular character, it's one of many reasons why I like it! Of course, like a lot of games, it has it's deffects; for example, the walls. I said it in a past interview, but I'm blind in one eye. Though the zoom in function is very handy, the walls constantly get in the way. I'm not interested in watching them on the can, but I'd kind of like to see what's going on the kitchen without the living room wall getting in the way. I'm just glad it's optional that the walls can remain visible. And another thing I don't get is why you can't put your customized character in the PLAY THE SIMS mode. Then again, I'm still getting used to everything, so I could be wrong on that. Still, it would be nice to create a sim, and have her life be one I arrange rather than settle with him/her being in the GET A LIFE game. Normally, I'm understanding on issues like this, but I truly love customizing my own character, and scenery. Therefore, the lack of being able to use a custom character in PLAY THE SIMS costs this game at least two points.
And of course, there are minor problems, such as the eating, the bathroom, and the ned for sleep messing up the schedule I plan for the little guys. But all those problems total remove merely one point. After all, it's a game based on life. If I can't control the need for food in reality, it might as well be that way in Sim land. Besides, those are the only downfalls in my opinion. I just love building the houses. I probably spent an hour or two designing the perfect house for the entire neighborhood of Drayville (my little Sim village). If you're looking for an easy game, select the batchler. It's just that much easier to manage one sim rather than a whole family. I'll occasionally play the Roomies at most if I'm looking for a challenge. There are lots of other things I just love about this game, but that would probably take up about ten pages. Still, the things I don't like cost this game greatly. So I give it a 7 out of 10.

The majority of the game is pritty easy to understand without the use of the instructions manual but some of the game can be borin for example:-
1. When a person goes to bed and you have to wait till he / she gets up to be able to do something good, or when he / she complains about not wanting to do various tasks such as reparing things or reading a book, I feel like I wanna jump into the screen and give him / her a slap accross the face for being cheeky. 2. Also when they have to do house choures such as cleaning up their mess and teach them where to put it after they clean it up. That can get borin after a while. I know that is what the game is all about but if you play it for hours on end like I do then you can udnerstand where I am coming from lol. Any way good points are, this game gives me more of an insite of how to manage the money I have from the sim's account so I have to check the budget all the time to see if im driving myself into debt or to see if im safe. The only thing I find hard to do is to get a MALE / female to sleep with my sim he / she always moans about not having female / male company but is also not willing to do anything about it when I get him / her to try and call their friends to come round, he / she kinda shruggs his / her shoulders and says na hu! So I just let him or her suffer and listen to more of their winjing lol. I would guvethis game 8 out of 10 so far. Oh yea, if you can't get any of your sims to get a job try ivicting the family life style and going with the batular, thats who im using at the moment, he has a job working for the army he brings home S250 sim's. Buy a computer and use that to look for work he won't do it reading the papper.
| adictive, kewl, imaginitive and reality all roled into 1 | | Louise from England says (26/Apr/2003): | well the sims, i had all the pc expansion packs (which were great) i used 2 be up all night playing them and when i heared it would be on all 3 consoles i jumped for joy now the sims could live in an all new 3d world. when i first played the game i was amazed with the amount of detail u could put on your sims instead of having just a few standard heads YOU choose the hair style YOU choose the eye colour, hair colour, maybe glasses or a hat YOU design them and the houses they live in. i have complited all 7 levels in get a life and i must say i enjoyed every moment and like the pc games it had me coming back for more. I actually felt as though my sim was growing up and actually was maturing from moving out of mums, getting a job,having the lazy roomate so u do the work, fall in love and get married, having 2 kids and even having 2 work hard to keep them, running a family of 4, making the kids have straight a's and let them go of to prep school and then retirement. the one thing i have a problem with in this game is the fact that you cant buy all the items u want even if u do have the moneya line tells u how much more u can but or build once it is full u can no longer buy anyhthing unless you sell an item this i found very tideous and it made it hard to make my real dream home. is there a way of getting rid of this leesh? the graphics were great, the sounds were quite realistic, and although i have spent tiime writeing this i feel i want to go back to the game and back to reality. GREAT.

I finally plunked down 19.95 for the PS2 version. I've always been interested in cellular automata. I've sunk many hours into the SimCity series. I am extremely disappointed with The Sims. I guess the real question is why do so many people love this game and I really hate it? Why, when I love to play games of this genre?
There is not enough utility in this game to keep on playing. For the amount of effort to try to keep your sim happy, you have to spend way too much time manipulating too many details for too little in rewards.
In trying to make it "realistic", Maxis has removed the gameplay. The goals of the game are good: develop relationships, develop a character, get rich and buy cool stuff you only dreamed of in real life. Unfortunately, there is not enough utility to keep the sim happy long enough to do anything constructive. Maxis' goals became reality: deal with mounting problems in life, deal with problematic relationships, make only enough money to get by: be frustrated with life.
Maxis deviated from their basic goals by forcing day-to-day realism. How much real game time is wasted even fast forwarding your sim through sleeping, bladder releasing, reading etc?
Who cares about the graphics and interface if the gameplay is boring?
The Sims could have been a great game had Maxis focused on the goals and had not got caught up in the boring mundane details of life.
| just a few things i want to say. | | A gamer from London , England says (5/Jan/2004): | i think the sims was really good but there was room for improvments the first thing they could sort out is the langage it would have been great to hear what they had to say instead of evrey time they wanted somthing they would have to jump up and down and have a little dream bubble thing telling you what they wanted! the seconed thing is the limit of things you can buy in your house!!! i was really excited when i found out a cheat that makes evrey thing free...that i went straight on it i built a massive house for my family to live in but i was disipointed when i went to put a monkey butler in my house and it would not accepept it because i aready had too many things in my house but isnt that what your meant to do when you have cash to splash...SPEND IT! i had to sell lots of things in the end so i could have that monkey butler.The last problem was adopting a babie...when you adopted one and it grew up into a chlid im not sure about any one else but mine looked like a total idiot!!! it had face paint all over its face and had the weirdist hairstyle and im not being sexist but it was always a boy. i loved the game itself but those improvments would have made it perfect!!!!!!!!!

The PS2 version actually has a point, where you have objectives to follow, and rewards to recieve once you've passed, and i like that. On the PC, once you learn the cheats, there's really no point to the game. I don't like, however, the fact that you can "max out" your home, that there is no second story, and of course there is no way to download extra items (on PS2). There are a lot of different faces and clothes for your Sims, however, and a lot of cool items to buy. The graphics are awesome, the controls are genius (once you get the hang of them!!), and there are several ways to play the game. It would be really cool if there were a way to expand the game, like on the PC, as i would love a downtown, and beach, and all that, but for all i know, it could be on the way. Really, the way i think of it, they are both very different games, and i can use both, so i can have the best of both worlds. If you really love the Sims, and have a PS2, it's definitely worth looking into, and i really don't think it's a disappointment, it's just different.

Theres a lot more to it then just eat, sleep, talk, eat, sleep because you can get marrid and have have babies that turn into kids. you can get a job and get promoted aswell. ok, so maybe it might be the same day again and again and the graphics arn't that good, at least its not two dimentional rubbish that only has two different veiws. I would recommend this game to everyone I think that the game is original and well thought out and is extreamly clever, especialy the expantion packs because you get more out of the game on each one. this game is fun and I think you should buy it! its wicked!! the more I play the game the fun it is. And the sims for the ps2 is even better because there are actual targets to meet and theres no question of what shall i do today, it has to be done! I think the whole aspect of playing god is apealing to everyone and this game is ideal , I LOVE IT!!

They need to get a job to get money to suport the family. And they need to be happy not depresed or they can die. What else is They need to hae a friend or some one who loves them or they will not have a social life witch they need in order to keep them happy. And if you don't keep them clean no one will want to go near them so keep them clean and make sure the have hole bunch of friends o keep them happy.thir are many sims games such as,The Sims,The Sims Hot Date,The Sims Vacation,The Sims Online,The Sims Livin Large,The Sims Unlished, and thier is lots of other games i can think of and that is all i can really say about The Sims so tht is it or my inerview on The Sims.

The timing it takes just to walk to your bathroom is ridiculous. If they wanted to go so far as to make the game where you have to pay your bills, cook, clean, go to the bathroom even, why not just make realistic time. In real life you don't have a limit as to how much you can buy. i am considered rich i guess in the game, but what have i been able to buy? Burglar alarms, neccesities (commodes, doors, WALLS). i don't know if i am just an idiot or if there's something i'm missing out on as far as the rules of this game goes. They have a cheat for getting as much money as you can get, yet can buy only 100 items or so. i like addicting games, but this is horrible. i get no where, and when i do, where i get to is not impressive i can't even see what it is i'm doing. It's the only game i regret buying. Still i hope those who do like it can explain how i can make this game more enjoyable. i'm open. i hate to think i wasted my money.
| Kinda 50/50 | | Cristyna from London, UK says (16/Feb/2003): | Firstly i really really like the sims on pc so when i heard it was being released on ps2 i was quite dubious about what it was gunna be like, for instance on the pc version i really dont like the way that it take them 5 hours to go for a shower and stuff like that. it makes building your stats up really annoying as you have to go through each day trying to get your comfort,energy etc levels up This is what i found with the ps2 version too. The best thing about the ps2 version is definatly the more varied charecters you can make and most obviously the graphics are better and you can actually see what they are doing. i would recommend this game although you have to have a lot of patience believe me. One time i was trying to build my 'body' level up and it took me ages to do it because my charecter was forever tired and hungry and like i said feeding and showering them takes half the day so i had the whole day wasted when she coulda been working out!
| Could have been way better! | | Lee from Canada says (2/Apr/2003): | Straight out, this game sucks, it's so pointless, and the time goes so fast that you hardly have any time do do anything, then your sims start crying and complaining, then they won't do stuff, real life not all fun and games, and i'm always doing stuff I don't want to do, but have too... Someone should have told the game makers this. I also find when you tell them to do stuff, sometimes they just sit there for like five real minutes, which is about an hour their time, nintendo should have done like they did in animal crossing, and make it go by real time, real dates! And where the hell are all the items? How the hell do you make a second floor? The PC version is a hundred times better then the console version, at least they had expansions and really cool cheats! I mainly bought this game cause I liked the building aspects of it all, but I used up all the items available in one day, and haven't played the stupid game since!!!
| Fantastic and totally addictive!!!!!! | | Jono from nottingham england says (4/Feb/2003): | when i was in the shop i wasnt sure whether i wanted it as i didnt like the pc version, but i bought it(best decision i ever made!!) now im TOTALLY hooked!!!its easily the best ps2 game around, 10 times better than the pc version.the controls simple and easy to get used to,the graphics are superb in 3D and the sounds r fantastic and crisp.there are many new objects to buy (such as the strip poker table!!!) im guessing that it has a long lifespan as it has missions on it well not 'missions' but levels that are fun and get you used to play(basically big fun tutorial!named Get a Life)start off living with ure mum and end up in a huge mansion!!! the game has lost its originality factor as its been already done.i would have given it a 12 out of the 10 but sadly thats not on the scale!!! i would recommed it any1 even if u havent heard of the game before its worth buying a ps2 for!!! buy this game!!!!!!!!!!! | You either love it or you hate it. | | Liam Whelan from Milton Keynes, England says (29/Dec/2003): | Just incase you don't know The Sims is based on bringing up families, getting a job, staying alive and so on. This game is so popular though because in some shops they have a whole shelf packed with Sims games. Anyway the reason why I like this game is that it puts you in control and you can really boss around your Sims and test out stuff. Some people on the other hand will think that raising a family is a girly thing to do and you should grow out of it (if you're a boy). The game gets really repetitive and annoying and you have to be patient or you fail every time. You can also kill Sims and get burgled and have fires in your house but they take hours to happen. Apart from that The Sims has brilliant graphics and close to OK sounds. It's the only game where you bring up a family you'll find apart from Bustin' Out which is also a Sims game. If what I've said sounds good to you then buy it now!

Because when i first saw it it looked sort a boring, but when i bought it, it facinated me! Alright i know some of ya think dat dis game is a waste of time, but maybe it won't, cuz i have all da codes to dis game. HERE THEY ARE! alright, to unlock the cheat screen, go to da main menu and press L1,L2,R1,and R2 at da same time and a box will appear. Type in MIDAS to get all objects. Type in FREEALL to get ALL objects for free in both buy and build mode (HAS NO EFFECT ON BILLS, FOOD, OR SERVICES). Type in PARTY M to get new 2 player game THE PARTY MOTEL. Type in SIMS to unlock play the sims mode without having to go threw the dream house level. And finally, type in FISH EYE to unlock first person view (THAT MEANS LOOK THREW YOUR SIMS EYES). I recently got married, which means that I have to spend some time away from my PS2. My wife really isn't in to any video games, well except for Bubble Bobble. I've tried everything. I bought her a controller with her favorite color. I sat down and played some easy games that I thought she'd enjoy, but to know avail. Nothing. So I bought the Sims yesterday and got her to take a look at it. At first she was uninterested, but when I asked her to create herself and try playing she didn't put it down. The easy tutorials and gameplay, exciting little adventures of everyday life really intrigued her. Which is good, but also bad, because now I can't play it. THe good thing about the Sims is that it's still fun to watch other people play it. Which is probably what I'll be doing for awhile.
| need to get a life? this is your chance!!!! | | paul from austarlia says (26/Jan/2003): | the best game on the pc has finally come to the playstation 2. most of you will probably have heard of the sims and have played it and if you havent well i will tell you what its about. you get to make up your own person (a sim) build the house and then control everything your sim does from choosing its career to eating and when to go to sleep or have a shower. you even can get married and have kids you can anything and i mean anything if you wanted to you coul invite all your neighbours over and lock them all in one room and make them to starve to death or you could invite all your frines over and have bib party in spa or pool and play game and talk and anything you want to. so if you have ever wanted a diffrent life this is a chance to. but just giving you a warning if you havent got a few hours to kill then this isnt for you. get it have fun and enjoy.

I really don't understand the whole idea of the game. You lift weights for a little bit then you have to go eat and after eating you have to go straight to the bathroom, shower if needed and then he is tired you go to sleep, then you wake to eat and go to the bathroom again. It's really kinda dumb cause then you have to be social and learn mechanics and cooking. Which takes forever!!! To learn anything at all, and then you have to go and have some fun so you can study again. It's kinda of pointless not to put the cheating codes along with the game just so you would have fun with the game. Or start off with a lot of money. This may sound like I'm just rambling on about bull about it but it's true and you have to be a geek if you like this game so much!!!
