Activision Anthology | | Jezz from Queensland says (28/May/2003): | When I first looked at the front cover of Activision Anthology, I immediately spotted the little billy club character from 'Keystone Capers' (an old favourite of mine) and was beginning to look forward to the prospect of having a bash at this and some of the other classics. While Activision Anthology offers the experience of replaying a selection of these old goodies, it dosen't really go any further despite the addition of an 80's soundtrack and the ability to unlock patches and game modes.
Perhaps the greatest letdown of the whole Anthology pack isn't so much the games themselves, but the lack of variety and effort. Fifty games may seem to offer a fair amount of playability, but seeing as these games are replicas of their Atari 2600 cartridge predecessors, surely the team at Activision could have managed to squeeze in a lot more titles, seeing as they are rather simple programs (say another 50?). Even though there are a lot of classics that old-school gamers would easily remember (Outrun, River Raid), what about the two-player action classics such as Combat and Outlaw? They would have been a wonderful addition to the collection.
Aside from this negativity, the package does contain a few neat quirks. The fact that you have to play and attain top scores on certain games to unlock hidden goodies is always a bonus for it's replayability. It's wonderful to see that you can unlock the old gaming patches (the ones you sent away for if you got really great scores), and some of gaming modes, such as Starfield and Disco, give the method of gameplay a new twist and more visual eye-candy (although I'll never understand why they included V-Hold mode. Man that was annoying). The inclusion of a sample of 80's musical hits is another nice touch. If you're into Twisted Sister and Soft Cell, then you'll love it, otherwise you can always turn it off and listen to 2-bit audio gameplay instead.
The title says it all. What you're getting is a pack of old Atari games with the addition of music from it's genre and other little accessories and tidbits that go along with it. If you are a dead-set fan of Atari games, then this game is definately up your alley. Otherwise, rent it first and see what you think. It's not bad at all, but it could have gone a little further.
