ss4 from ohio,usa says (23/Nov/2003):
Overall this game was pretty tight, the graphics were off the hook, the sound was great, and the fun factor was excellent and so was the story line; and best of all the characters real voices are on the game, but this game could use some major improvements. For one this game didn't have long enough gameplay because it ended too quickly. The moves were good, but they were all the same like goku's dragon fist, and the ranma with piccolo, all the ki attacks were also the same, the only difference was that it was done with a different character with a different name, like the raining ki blast with one of the other characters and the parmesan shower with Captain Ginyu and so were many other attacks. When someone does an attacks they should not only have a ki guage but they should also have something like an attack guage so they can build up the level of an attack; like instead of a regular kamahemaha they can build it up to five levels on the gauge making it stronger. Another thing on the game they need to work on is age of the game .The game seems like its for ages 10 and under, there is no blood shed when fighting for a long period of time, and the insults they say while fighting are not like anything the characters would say on T.V, and basically the fighting is just not fierce enough going along with the need for better sound effects in battle..Another thing they should take into consideration is when a character powers up to a new level it should be the way it is on the cartoon series; For instance if you're super saiyan or you should have a golden glow around you and if you're super saiyan 2 you have a golden glow with sparks of electricity around you and if you're Kamicolo you should have a white glow around you. When powering up they should have special effects like ground breaking, earth rumbling, fierce winds, lighting strikes,ect..ect..Flying on the game is also a problem, you shouldn't have to knock a character in the air to allow yourself to fly you should be able to do it manually, and while doing this, just to keep people from cheating, if you are flying, your ki gauge slowly decreases, because that's the way it is on the cartoon.Having a 7 max guage for a super saiyan or any other advanced leveled character is pointless, when a character reaches a new level their guage should increase because the higher level you go your guage decreases faster making it harder for you to complete a move necessary for that level.Goku has so many levels it's so hard for him to complete the spirit bomb with his guage draining like that, especially how easy it is to get knock down.Something else about the game isn't realistic either do you actually think a normal level person in the game could stand up to super saiyan vegeta up VS. regular krillin. I've almost begun to think the rising levels are only to complete the super moves and not to increase the players strengths. Each character should be unique in fighting and not the same monotonous combos each character posesses. The look of the super moves should also be redone.the galik gun, kamahemaha,or death beam shouldn't be a ball of light, but rather a continuous beam of visible of light coming towards you. They're also many special features which should have been on Budokai 1 or DBZ Budokai 2. Saiyans should have the opportunity to turn into an Oozaurus and fuse with anyone just call it a crazy idea.but flying cold use improvement.

Good.....but hope budokai2 will be much better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

odin, the ultimate supersaijin from kingman az, mohave usa says (13/Apr/2003):
listen up people, this was a great game. so it wasnt an exact duplicate of the show, no games are. this game i agree had plenty of room for improvement. they left out so many things. you dont even get to fight with yamcha, tien, chat-zu or anything else during the saijin saga. it would have been nice if you could have use vegeta in all his fight in story mode. he only has like 4 or 5. in the show, he had 14 before the end of the cell saga. i think they should have added where vegeta took out kewi, the nameks, and the fight with android 18. and dont get me started on trunks. he is one of my favorite characters, but he didnt do anything in storymode except a quickshot on frieza, and dying by cells frieza beam. he fought as an ultra ssj against cell and nearly won, i think they should have added that and allow you to use him in the fight with frieza. i like how the game works on the caps, only one prob, the breakthrough doesnt allow anything else. they should have made it to where you can use the dragonballs to wish for it to take less space. i had fun boosting supertrunks 2 to fight at +85%. i like that, but it is rather like an insult that goku's king kai fist x10(should have been kaoken) is stronger the gohons supersaijin 2. and vegeta didnt have any other power ups. not to mention frieza, he increased his power 6 times in the show, but he only has final form and 100%, if you can manage, you can get friezabot. on the show, goku had the ability to power up after going supersaijin, and they left that out. he also went ultra ssj in the time chamber they left out. goku says he has to train for the androids are comming, and even after the time chamber, his +40% to attack never went up. how dare they add hercule, some people thought it a joke, i think its an insult to all dbz gamers. i know this game had a whole lot of serious problems, but even still, overall it was a great game. i spent 19 hours strait playing it because i got hooked. but it lost its fun, and now there is nothing left for me to do on the game, i even got breakthrough for all the saijins. (except trunks) well, i think they should have fixed the power increases to be a little more accurate, i mean zarbons transform is as strong as gohon supersaijin. goku's king kai fist 5 is stronger then vegeta's supersaijin, what a joke. the also left out tiens solarflare from a usable move. i have to give some credit though, they actualy gave and #17 his energy field. anyway, i think this was still a great game, but it had a whole lot of room for improvement. why can goku not use his spirit bomb while he is a supersaijin, and why is big bang stronger than final flash. i gave my output, it still hand good music and gameplay(EXCEPT YOU COULDNT FLY WHEN YOU WANTED TO, YOU HAVE TO BE KNOCKED INTO THE AIR), they added goku training on the way to namek, they should have added the hyperbolic time chamber training for all of them, they should also have had the rest of the ginyu force. the graphics were to die for, the sound was good, and the gameplay rocks. it realy is a good game, just too many corks in it. and for all you whiners that there is no buu saga stuff, so what. the buu saga sucked anyway. it was the worst one yet. i did like a few things about the buu saga, but the rest sucked. anyway, leaving out majin buu and his 20 different forms was an improvement overall. i gave my review. 7/10

After the waiting , it finally came..............12949

Vegeta's final flash from Bruges, Belgium says (15/Dec/2002):
Well, well, well, we've waited for so long, and it finally came true afterall. Let me start by saying that this game IS truly the best DBZ-game ever. Of course it also has to do with that it's on one of the more powerful consoles. OK, let's start off with all the good stuff. The graphics first. The're absolutely perfect!! There's just nothing to complain about, they're just fantastic, I'd even say that everybody looks better in this game than in the episodes! Then we've got the music, but you don't really pay very much attention to it when you play, but the music's great too. You have about 23 characters in the game. And here, you get to turn Super-Saiyan whenever you want to! If you play with Cell, you can transform in his three forms, and idem with Frieza. The controls now. Lucky for us, they're not like in FB, slow, and choppy, now the're very nice. But usually, when we used to do the Kamehameha, we were all used to doing that move with the arrows, and then press the fire button, but now the controls are a little different, but that doesn't matter, you just have to get used to it. The story mode is probably the best thing about this game! You can play the story mode from the arrival of Raditz, till the end of Cell, and yes, I know, you'll say : Why the Saiyan saga instead of the Boo saga? Well, I'll bee honest, I didn't like it at first either, but afterwards, it's still OK, because there aren't any games where you could play the Saiyan saga(You could in Legends, but that wasn't really a story mode, now was it?)Anyway, the best thing about this mode is, that you can see everything re-inacted from the series, and that's incredibly cool to see, it even looks better than the series, and it's all in 3-D wich makes it even better. Despite all the good things in the game, there are some things wich are a little less. For example, the controls may play very smoothly, but they're like legends, wich means that you can only go near and away from your aponnent(you can move in and out from the screen, like in FB)Also, you can not levitate at will, only when you punch your aponnent in the air. But this will not enfluence the game, I can assure you. Then, you have the world of martial arts tournament, and when you win, you win prizemoney, wich you can spend on buying skills at Mr.Popo's skill shop(Yes, you can and have to buy skills to improve your character)If you don't want to improve your character, you can always fight with the fighters in the game, who have most of the skills(buying, and improving the characters' skills to make your own warriors makes it more fun). And when you've beaten the first level in thE WOMAT, you get a special Satan-mode, where you can use the man himself(his moves are pretty cool, really, if you thaught that was a loser, your wrong, he's pretty tough). You can play with characters who weren't used so much in the other DBZ-games, like :Raditz, Dodoria, Zarbon, Nappa. The only thing that bothers me most is the folllowing : The game is designed differently from what we're used to, I mean to say, that the lay-out looks kind of childish, as if Bandai made the game for the younger DBZ-fans. It gets a Pokémon-stadium-look, wich isn't very good. But in overall this game has nothing to complain about, so if you've played the previous DBZ-games, this one can't be missed!

Decent But Major Downsides!21251

Veggichan from Fort Wayne, USA says (13/Apr/2003):
Hey everyone. This game was not that great. I mean sure it was a decent game but being a major DBZ fan myself I noticed some major flaws. Take for example the lack of characters. Where is everybody? No ginyu force, no Nail(my personal favorite Namek), no Frieza forms 2 & 3, no Android 20(what is up with that?!), no Chaoutzu, which made me mad, no Yajirobe, no Kiwi(one of Frieza's top men)! Need I go on? Also there are major innacuracys in the story mode. One being the complete lack of the Garlic Jr. saga which I was hoping to play. Another is that many scenes have been done wrong. They are little things usually but for any hardcore DBZ fan, or at least for me, they are like being shot repeatedly. Yes I did say shot repeatedly, that is how much it annoys me. Also, I know it's a fighting game but where's the interaction? I was hoping for a couple of role playing type elements to be in there as that was the impression I got from many articles I had read before I bought it. Instead it is just a regular fighting game. It would have been nice to have more of a twist. You know something like being able to alter the ending depending on what battles you win and lose so that lets say your playing the Saiyan saga and Goku gets killed then Vegeta becomes the legendary super saiyan or something along those lines. I was also hoping that when I read things about being able to make a "custom" character it meant that I would actually be able to create my own character. This is not the case. You can simply take already existing characters and put other moves on them. Another thing about the story line is that it took me 5 hours to beat it. That is almost the least amount of time it has ever taken me to beat a fighting game. Street fighter ex plus alpha and the gundam battle assault games are the only ones that can top that. The character moves are also very repetitive. The thousands of combos that I read were in the game are actually just the same combos for every character just with a different name. Another thing is that the battlefields your characters fight on kinda suck. There is maybe one interactive thing you can do with each level(get knocked through mountain, etc.). I was hoping for something more like some of the street fighter games for psx where craters are made when you hit the ground and you can get knocked through walls and stuff. The world tournament mode is also ridiculous because the AI that you fight is way cheap. They basically knock you into the air and then knock you out of the ring. Mostly because the ring is so friggin small. For God's sake, the rings we fight in at the martial arts tournaments I go to are that size. Graphics and sound arent to bad though and its refreshing to finally play a game based on an anime where the voice actors from the show are cast to do the acting for the game. All and all though, the downsides outway the good side of the game. Duel is fun for a rainy day though so If your a hardcore fan like me, go ahead and pick it up if you really wanna invest $50 on a game you'll only play on rainy days. If not, don't say I didn't warn you.

P.S. Stay away from Ultimate Battle 22 at all costs!!!

Finally, a decent DBZ game for fans of the show.13721

GuardianD from Baltimore, MD, USA says (27/Dec/2002):
DBZ:Budokai isn't for everyone. I'd have to say that right up front. If you are a hardcore fighting game fan, rent it first. If you are a hardcore DBZ fan, you will enjoy owning it, but will notice little mistakes that will "urk" you a bit.
Personally, I'm a fan of the show, though I prefer "Capcom style" fighting games. (Dear Lord, if only they could get their hands on the rights to make one!) However, Budokai isn't a terrible disappoinment. If you've ever played Tekken, Virtua Fighter, or Dead Or Alive games, you'll be able to pick up the combo system in this game quite well. You may find that the controls seem a little "slugish", as it's seems most people have. (Try using a standard DualShock (tm) controller, as sometimes it seems to accept the button presses better. Might have something to do with the pressure sensitive buttons on a DualShock2 (tm).) Anyhow, most people are complaining about the fact that all the characters have similar combo-button layouts. If you stop to think about it, this was a much needed feature. Playing through the story mode, using various characters, you need to be able to pick up each character's moves immediately. This was the best, if not only, way to do that. The story mode follows the show quite nicely, but there are little "bugs" that fans will see... might even have you saying out loud, "That's not how that went!" All in all, the story mode is strong, with nice little "side stories", that lend a "what if?" twist to it.
The Duel Mode is probably where you will spend most of your time, if you play with friends. The only draw back to this is the Custom Skills set. While it does tend to give a little more variety to the game, some of the skill settings are a bit lame. I mean, it takes 4 of 7 slots to even have Goku be a Super Saiyan, where all the others can have it in just one?
World Championship Mode is a standard "tounament mode", that pretty much every fighter game has. It's not really any different, however... the fact that you can beat the CPU to near KO, and he knocks you out of the ring so frequently will certainly annoy you. You pretty much have to be on the aggresive 99% of the time, and hope that he/she doesn't catch you in mid-attack. No real time to "charge up" and use your specials.
Overall, this game is the one that fans of the series have been waiting for... almost. It has it's flaws, but is by FAR the best DBZ fighter available so far. As for challenge, the Tournament is the most difficult aspect, given the "Ring Out" portion. You can get through the Story Mode in about an hour and a half, two hours, from the first moment you put it in. It's replay value is still rather high, if you are a fan of the show. (Having Goku pull his "warp kamehameha" is just too cool.)
In the end, fans of the show will still be left wanting a little more out of their favorite fighting themed game... but it's enough to hold you over until they finally get it right. It's a lot of fun to play, and could be a welcome addition to your collection if you are a DBZ fan. On the other hand, if you are just a fighter fan, you might be better off picking up Tekken 4.

Gr8 DBZ game, wanna c numba 213721

Craig from Co. Durham, UK says (20/Sep/2003):
Dragonball Z Budokai is probably the best DBZ game there is. It has kept really loyal to the T.V show and unlike some games based on shows or films, it hasn't been just a little like the film/show, it has almost everything in it. The reason that this game kicks arse, is the fighting part itself. The moves are easy to grasp and once you have grasped them with one character, the others have the same moves, so you dont just get good with a certain person, like on most games, but you can now play with everyone. The gameplay is also really simple, and unless you a comlpete morron and have never heard of DBZ you'll easily understand how to play. What else I liked is that there aren't any real cheats so you have to play it and get good at it instead of just winning in one move or something. Some bad things about this though, bring the game down quite a bit. The worst of all for me is the voice. Most people like it and if you've seen the Japanese versions or something you'll be glad to hear that they've kept the Japanese voices, but if you're like me and have only seen DBZ, you'll be a bit dissapointed because the voices are all high-pitched and sound incredably stupid, for example completing the game the first time, you have the cut scene, where Gohan and Cell each do a kamehaemeha on eachother and Goku talks through King Kai. This was one of my favourtie episodes on DBZ, but on the game I couldn't take it seriously because Goku's voice was childlike. Another thing with the way they speak is the subtitles. They are hardly ever proper Engilsh and don't normally say what they say on the T.V show. The only other bad thing about the game is that it's too short. They should have definately included Majin Buu. He is obviously the best character ever, he is soo babyish and fat, yet everyone is scared of him. Also it would make the character list a lot longer because there are 8 different versions of him and if you have the buu saga, you get Gotenks and Vigito (my other favourite character). Two good things about it apart from how super fun it is and the easy to grasp moves, are the graphics, that are awesome and realistic and the sound that unlike some games, matches the emotions of the characters. Also although the story line is short, there is so much to do because if you're a perfectionist like me and ant every capsual for everybody, that involves getting the dragonnballs 23 times. After playing as mmuch as I have, I have decided that the good points totally outway the bad and the gameplay, moves, laoalty to the stryline and so much more make this game the best in the DBZ series. I can't w8 4 numba 2 tho, as ive heard that there will e dragonmode as well but if they delete storymode 2 put it in it will be rubbish. However with 11 new characters u can be sure it will b on my christmas list

GREAT GAME WITH A FEW FLAWS (read this if your thinkin bout buyin it)13455

Danny Um from Delburne, Canada says (24/Dec/2002):
Hey all my name's Danny and I've reviewed many DBZ games for all kinds of sites and I've been rewarded for doing so (cuz mine was so good). But I'll have to admit, I had a helluva time reviewin this game. Dbz Budokai is no doubt the best DBZ game yet (maybe cuz it's the only one on PS2 so far). I'll admit the graphics and the sound are awesome but I think that the game is far, far too short and easy! The highest level of super saiyan in this game only 2 and Gohan is the only one who can reach it. I also hate the fact that it never went to the end of Buu! (sure it would ruin the show but were all plot-spoilin lovers arent we?!) There are a large number of characters ranging from Raditz to Hercule and each of them have their own, unique, awesome ultimate-moves which can blow up the whole level. The gameplay is relatively easy with a punch, kick, block, and ki attack button and the powerful KI attacks are just too easy to pull off. I mean, my god, we want a challenge dont we? A 2 year old could hit square 4 times and then circle to pull off a kamehmeha. The story mode is great but it could have used more fights and mini-games. Even though this is off-topic, the thing that really pisses the $hit outta me is the fact that when you finish the story mode and you wanna go through the whole thing again, you hafta to select the chapters one at a time pissing the crap outta you. They shoulda put a button or something on there so you could go through it all. Although Super Saiyan 2 is the highest level in the game, Trunks and Vegeta also have a level (or 2) after super saiyan. After winnin the story mode, you unlock the world tournament which can win you money which can get you skillz at Popo's shop. You can customize characters using skillz uve bought and you can unlock a special game called Legend of Hercule which is referred to as Survivor in other fighting games. There are a few good fighting levels and combos. The movies though is what made me buy the game. The graphics combined with the sound and smooth movement make the most outstanding movies I've ever seen. The faces of the characters are awesome but they look retarted when they close their eyes (I mean, Christ, it looks like South Park). Overall, this game was great and I recomend to any DBZ fan. I don't want to spoil the game anymore but if you want me too e-mail me at dangerously_cheezy25< remove me > at hotmail.com. You guys who made this site, just tellin you in advance, I know this review kicks hot, sick, A$$ but don't send me any rewards, I got enough and some of the others are pretty good to. Well I hope you enjoyed it. C YA!!!

Budokai 2 is cool, but it does lag in some areas13455

Patrick Bennett from Houston, Texas says (2/Mar/2004):
Sure, Budokai was good, but Budokai 2 is better, although it's missing some vital characters that played in the story, not only in the series but concidering Broly, the other 3 androids that were made, and if anyone remembers the saiyan from the "Tree of Might" and they barely have any moves, if you look at their lists once you've unlocked everything, you'll find that goku only has 3 to 4 moves, the other "Techniques" are Power Ups, from "King Kai Fist x20" to "Super Saiyan 3" and he barely recieves any new moves with his new transformation. As for the fusions "Gotenks" "Gokule" "Vegito" "Kabitoshin" and "Tiensha" they're pretty cool and as for the two fusions that were never real, the creators put a lot of immagination into them. And Last but not least, The "Dragon World" also known as the "story mode" is really good once you start it, but then once you figure out there is only 9 Levels....it's like a waste of time. And then you figure out that you cant buy the Dragon Balls and you gotta go through Story mode every time to get a characters breakthrough...it's truly frustrating, but i did it and i unlocked all the characters and i got every single move. and for those of you who have just started this game i warn you... There are 29 characters total ...that means you gotta go through Story mode 30 TIMES the reason you have to do it 30 instead of 29 times is because you need to get "Babadi's Ship" ...Why? do you ask. because you need "Babadi's Ship" to get Majin Buu, Super Buu, Kid Buu AND super buu's "Absorbtion" move. there is no other way to get that move imluss you use cheats. besides once you beat story mode 30 times ...it's seems pointless to do it anymore, that maked only "Babadi's Ship" and the "Tournament Mode" for you to play, excluding Vs. Mode and Practicee, and those get boring after a while, especially "Babadi's Ship" Once you unlock the Buu's and the super Buu move, you wont want to go back there again...i know i didn't, thats why i'm glad my mom rented the game for me instead of buying it for me. cause renting it and finding out how it is instead of going to buy it first saved her 60 to 70 dollars, and me...it saved me a lot of frustration. yupp....thats all the "Reviewing" i'm gunna do.

e-mail me if you have questions about cheats, characters, moves, breakthroughs or tips. Cause i can answer any question about this game... I can even tell you why they didn't put in My and Your avorite character, Broly, in the game. but i wont tell you now, e-mail me to find out.

The best DBZ game yet!13455

Ziosuna from Washington, USA says (2/Apr/2004):
Dragonball Z Budokia 2 is in my opinion one of the best games for the fighting genre of video games. It still has a few annoying bugs (mainly some of the characters seem to take every advantage to knock you out of the ring in the tournament mode) I mean yeah it's an easy way to proceed through the tournament and yeah it makes it more challenging when the other fighters use this tactic to take you out but they always seem to be one stepahead of you when they do use this tactic. Then you end up using half your life just to stay in the ring before you realize what's happening. Another small problom it has is the replay value that all fighting games have. Once you've beaten the levels, gotten the characters, all the skills, movies, ect... You quickly lose intrest in the game. Other than that the graphics are beutifull and I simply love the little movie scene where after bashing the brains out of the opponent they go flying through a rock formation, ocean, over a cill, or into an cliff causing an avalanche in the process. Pluss the dificulty in the moves are at a decent level, They're not close to impossible like some of the moves in previous games, (Killer Instinct for example) ever try pulling off the top combo? You'ld have better luck mashing buttons. And they're not too easy like in the mortal kombat games. They're just right, granted some of the moves are hard but with a few rounds of practice you can usualy get them down without a problom. Also I think it was a good idea for them to include all the sagas including the buu saga, even though they messed up on the sayian saga I expect it was just to make deadline and cut costs. Note that DBZ games don't really do so well... even in japan. So give them support and we can expect the creators to turn out even greater DBZ games. The interaction between the characters is amazing for a cell shaded game most of them tend to have the characters pass through eachother giving the enemy enough time to hit you before your attack is completed so I was very impressed with the skin mapping that they applied in this game. Also I'm very happy with the fact that they fixed the small problom with enemies tending to attack before the word fight appears on the screen (remember frieza in the last one... little < remove me > at %$#!*...) Yes I can't stress enough how this game has changed the genre of fighting games, I recomend this game as a must play for all ages.

Can't wait for the second one!!!33184

J.I.B. from Pinckneyville, IL, USA says (9/Oct/2003):
The game was awesome, it was pretty close to the story. One of the differences was when Frieza was on the ground, he wasn't cut in half. I gave this game a 10 because I'm a major DBZ fan. The graphics were pretty good if you ask me. I only wish they would have went farther in the game, to atleast the end of majin buu, or when Goku flies off with Uub. I guess the next one will have that though, I liked the voices and sounds, they were very much like the series. I wish they wouldn't have made a teen rated game though, i wish they could be more like japan and not cut anything out. I think they should make a game for all the movies, such as Broli, and Cooler. This games fighting style was pretty good, I kinda wish it had a little more blood and gore, I'm a big fan of that too(ain't that right Vice City fans). I also thought some of this game was funny, like when Cell fused with Krillin, man that was funny heh heh, too bad i never got to see the wedding of Krillin and Android 18. One thing that would have been nice is if Trunks could use that sword of his, I mean if your gonna carry that thing around, you might as well use it. The World Tournament was pretty fun, I don't like how they can kick you outside the ring so, I like to fight to submission myself. The Breakthrough Capsules made it fun, I've got 2 more characters to earn that for, I wonder what happens if you get the Dragon Balls again after you've earned evrybody's breakthrough. I don't like spending hours trying to buy the things though, this almost made me make this game a 9 but I decided not too. I mean what's the point of making a person go though hours of buying to get dragon balls. I liked the alternate costumes, but I wish they had more than 2. Also Goku's alternate costume wasn't that good, he's my favorite character, too bad they gave Vegeta the cool costume. The way they designed Piccolo was pretty cool too. I didn't like Great Saiyaman, I hate him, Gohan's pretty stupid to do that. This game also really makes me wonder something, the way Zarbon acts and talks, I wonder if he's gay. I won't go through all the characters, I dont think you want to read too much. Anyways, this was an awesome game, they did a great job with the graphics, sound, and gameplay were terrific, they need to make the other one this good as well.

Hope Budokai 3's better...38469

Dave from Birmingham,United Kingdom says (21/Jan/2004):
When you first play the game you think this is heavi, you're playin out the whole cartoon. all the major characters are there(heroes and villains),and the graphics have improved alot since the first game, also how you gain new skills is a good idea (you either win them in the dragonworld or buy them with money) but when the noveltly of all these things wears off you see that the game is really a basic level fighter.
Gameplay is the main problem as most characters have the same moves(named differently)and the same sequences to perform their special moves, so it takes very little time 2 master every character. The controls are also set so you can only perform certain combinations of punching and kicking, so they start feel really restrictive because theres only so many combos u can do and eventually repetive.Controls are also slow to respond, u move to dodge an attack n ur character fails to move, so this gets annoying.
The story mode has now been replaced with Dragonworld where you basically fight every villain and collect all the dragonballs to make a wish. this idea is good as the wishes allow you to obtain rare skills, but this doesnt replace the cinematic scenes of the first game and a to someone whos never played the game it will seem ridiculous and confusing. (also after you kill Frieza and Cell the third time it starts to pi$$ you off).
World tournament is where you earn money, there are 3 skill levels to choose from basically easy medium hard.this is good because the harder the level you choose the more money make but after you've won thats it, you start again.it would be interesting if you had to defend ur title, or you got a special skill or something but u don't.
After you've finished this game for about the 4th or 5th time you've basically mastered it, which is the problem its too easy, and there arent enuff extras to keep u interested for long so the best advice i can give is to play it on very hard when u buy it n try and complete other wise ull get bored.
i'm a fan of Dragonball Z n i bought it, so obviously other fans are gonna buy this game but if youre looking for a serious fighting game then dont waste ur money, this is a game to rent or to buy ur kid brother.

excellent game but needs slight improvements39153

Jesus from Jacksonville, Florida, USA says (18/Feb/2004):
Dragonball Z Budokai is a very good game. The graphics are excellent, the music goes well with the story, and the moves are awesome. But the game needs a little more variety though; for example, every character has similar moves. The game would be 100 out of 10 if you could take the moves that they do in the series and use it in the game. Also, I have to admit the graphics are great, but you can at least put bruises and ripped clothing and stuff like that on your opponent to be more realistic, ya know? Honestly, it is my favorite game of all time. The game play is awesome. Also, it is extremely addictive. The first day I started playing the game I did not turn it off ‘till like midnight or a little later. It is a very good game. My all-time favorite attack is Final Flash. My favorite thing in the whole game is the Story Mode. It’s like watching the series itself, but you do the battles. It should be done to every Budokai game released for those who do not know the series that well. This game is extremely original. The battles are fought very differently (in a good way). This is the best fighting game I have ever played. Also, I understand not having much life in the story mode (since you have to be realistic), but in duels against a friend you should have the option of having more life since some death moves makes it less fun since they do massive damage. In addition to that, characters in story mode should not have the same attack and defense power. For example, Goku is 1,000,000,000 times more powerful than Kid Gohan. The powers of characters should be like in the series to make it a better challenge. I must be boring y’all but to summarize it all, THIS GAME IS AWESOME! I recommend anyone to buy this game. You will never grow tired of it! 100% guarantee! Have fun!

Its cool and awsome39153

Daryl Brown,Videl,Goku,Gohan, and anima people of the heavens watching over me from asheville says (5/Dec/2003):
I've had DragonBallZ Budokai1 since probably August.Budakai fans DragonBallZ Budokai2 is already out folks but still dont give up on DragonBallZ Budokai1. The story mode is pretty awsome and I still think Budokai1 rocks. If anyone still ever visits this site please read this message of the hopes that Budokai1 exists as a favirote.(I dont have an email of my own but I'm going to use my moms. Please dont email my mom.)The graphics are awsome even though I dont have Budokai2. Trunks and gohan ROCK!ITS a shame they dont have kid gohan in Budokai2.And what I hate about gohan is that you cant get get older gohan out that rediculus Saiyiman costume, and you cant even get Higher than a SS2 level that sucks.
And why dont they have kid trunks and goten.Includingly Friezas death beam move,in the show his death beam attack went straight through the characters and he could probably multiply over 200 death beams less than 5 minutes. What cant he do that in Budokai1.HUUUUUH!Whats the point.Budokai rules anyway. If youre a Budokai hate, sad isnt it.The stroy mode is cool but is only goes onto the Cell saga and ends.then you go back through story mode Mode and rebeat episodes and unlock new characters.
Why dont they have Buu any how.STRANGE ISNT IT.And I'm lonely at home by my self and cold. One of the Best things I love about DragonBallz Bodukai1 is the limitless skills you unlock, equip to your character, and whoop some but.Any one who visits this site please remember me as you read this next year or whenever and remember this review in the cold wintery past,of the year 2003.Then I will arise and continue my reviews if any one comes visit this site. This report sure is taking a long time to type out.So please give your comments of what you Think of this review if you feel like it.

Not bad, good action fighting is pretty good but still needs lots inprovments23973

Davy from Queens New York,USA says (24/May/2003):
I got the game 3 months ago it is really easy to figure out for the most part but what I don't get is why it says P on the skill sheet meaning I can select it more than once on the skill tray to make it more powerful but it won't let me but that really isn't too much to worry about. The game just goes too fast for me becuase in the story mode it it basicly covers all the major battles and details but it definatley would be better if showed things and Goku's training on King Kai's planet and you would have to try to catch Bubbles and Gregery and when Gohan and Krillin where fighting Guldo and when Trunks was fighting Cell.Another critzism is there is no way it could be harder for Goku to go Super Sayain then it is for Vegeta, it takes Goku 5 ki gauges and it only takes Vegeta 4 and Vegeta gets the Super Vegeta power and Goku only gets Super Sayain,he reached Super Sayain2 at the Cell saga I think after you beat Cell as Goku he should get a SS2 skill.I think it would have been a better idea if they had Goten instead of Great Sayian man becuase they did exist at the same time and the fact that Great Sayainman can't even go Super Sayain is a big minus and I would much rather see Goten and all of his little tricks. And I am suprised that the androids don't automaticly have unlimited enegry.I now it would be asking to much but it would be really cool if they had the tree of might,Garlic.Jr,amd Freiza's brother Cooler. They also should have made Freia's 2nd and 3rd from that would be cool.
Besides that it is a pretty good game the graphics fighting and action are all pretty good I would give it a high 7 but I gave it a 8 becuase I heard there where some good cheats.I hope that there will be a squael with all these inprovements plus the Majin Buu saga.

I love this game!36970

Dragon Master from Alberta, Canada says (14/Dec/2003):
First of all, this is a great show and makes an even better game. Second of all, the selection of this are great! This is a flawless game except for one thing..... they didn't have Fat Buu in it. I really wanted to be him when I got this and was disappointed when I was unable to play as him.

I have beat this game all around, unlocked all the characters and moves (Except for that stupid last Dragon Ball.......Can't find it....grrrr). And yet, I still play this game. Another great thing is how many playable characters there are.

I am very impressed with the moves as well, I found them simple once I memorized them. One of my favorite things is Freiza's Space Ship (When you die as Freiza, and have that capsul equipped, the spaceship comes down and turns Freiza into metal Freiza, giving you a total of 6 energy bars!), which I found especially useful when in the Advanced Tournament.

Another feature is that there is a story mode, which enables you to unlock characters and basically play out the Dragon Ball Z sagas. Another, yes, another cool feature is once you unlock the Minigame (Hercules Quest.. or whatever the name is...), you go through Hercules lying life..... which is pretty funny to see what he thinks, especially against the Child Cells (The small blue version of Cell). And that reminds me! When I got Hercule and saw his grapple move, I burst out lauughing! That is so hilarious how he falls on them! And his finishing move, what a killer!

I can't get over the look on Super-Saiyan Teen Gohan's face when he receives the bomb! Priceless! One last note, the music is acurate, not to mention the great opening sequence at the beggining of the game. I could write a longer reveiw, but that would be wasting you're time! ^_^'

Frieza, Ruler of the Universe Part 228111

Ryan, from Suffolk Virginia, USA says (19/Jul/2003):
Hey guys its been along while, I know most of you hate Frieza because he acts like a girl, but if you really learn his moves and stuff although I think all of us together think that the character moves should be alittle more detailed. For example When you use Frieza's Deathball it should be alot bigger because when Frieza was battling SSJ Goku he used the Mega Deathball Twice and unlike in the game on the Tv his tail got cut off, plus he got cut in half by his own disk{that was funny}And when he came back to earth he used the Mega Deathball on SSj Trunks. And His voice is not a light girly voice it alittle between a deep girls voice and a girly man's voice. Now someone at my school said there is away to perform the Mega deathball but I'm not sure. If anybody knows this for a fact please let me know. Cell's voice should be deeper in his Perfect form anyway. And this is to the Company who made Dbz Budokai: Make sure that if you make A Dragonballz Budokai 3 that you include all 4and cyborg forms of Frieza
and give him and some of the other villians more devestating moves.
Frieza's moves should be:
1. Form 1
2. Form 2
3. Form 3
4. Form 4,50% and 100%
5. Deathball{small one}
6. Mega Deathball{really big one that can destroy earth}[ha ha]
7. Deathbeam x's 1
8. Deathbeam x's 2
9. Deathbeam x's 3
10. Energy disk
11. killer ball
12. Meteor Crash,Evil dance Etc.
All and all he should have a total of 16 or more techniques
P.s If he can do the Mega deathball in DBZ Budokai 2 the other opponent should be able to hold it,or throw it back and another thing Frieza can do the deathball in his first form too.
For those who like Frieza email me to give me information
and for those who hate Frieza {Don't Hate ok}

Dragonball Z 3 is the best!!!28111

Eric from Waitsburg, Washington, USA says (4/Feb/2005):
When I first played this game I was like wow! This is a really good game. It has good graphics, the way you get new characters like cooler and bardock!! Also your life, the way you can custimise it for every level you get. It's awsome. It just like one and two exept for that you are able to fly when you are doing Dragon Universe!! It's so awsome!! It has great sound and graphics and I don't know why anyone would rate this game lower than a 10!!! The moves are awsome too like suazer blade (for cooler) which is kind of like a sword to big bang kamahamaha (for gogeta)!! Not only are those things good but the transformations like ss4 and the moves for those like vegeta's ss4 move (replacing glaick gun) final shine and goku's ss4 move (replacing kamahamaha) 10x kamahamaha!! It's the best game ever!!
Oh ya and the ultimante attacks!! They are so cool because you keep hitting them until you block (hit the same button)!!! Of coarse you can't forget the voices!! The only bad voices are probly kid goku and Goku when in ss4, oh and in ss4 vegeta!!
Thank You so much people and by the way you need to get this game!!! [:-)
(P.S. This game is so awsome and just think when #4 comes out!! I have a feeling it's gonna be a hit ( a really big hit)! I mean a knock your socks off hit!!)
(P.S.S. I have a litte hint for when you get it (if you do). To do the ultimante attack you need to press L2 or PKEG at the same time and to do the utimante attack you hit them in the air and right when you hit them in the air you need to Press E or else it doesn't work (and don't let it run out or else you will get fatigue)!!!)
Thank You so much people!! Bye!
Eric from Washington, USA

A very strong title. Best in the series by a mile.17003

Shin Suzuma from England, London says (7/Feb/2003):
If you have played the previous DBZ games, you won't be expecting much of the latest one, budokai, but suprisingly it is one of the best games of its genre.
You start off with four fighting modes: vs, practice, world tournament and story.
In the story mode, you take on the role of the characters in the real manga. They all look exactly like in the manga except they are in 3d. In the story mode you there is one playable saga and two locked sagas. After you complete the first you move on to the next.In each saga there are on average 10 episodes. After you complete each one you recieve a capsule. Each capsule that you gain in the story mode can be character, an ability that aids you in battle automaticly, a transformation into a supieror form or an offensive fighting move. Another way to earn caps is to fight in the tournament. There are three levels of difficulty but only the easiest is available to you at the start. The is tournament is a simple knockout tournament. To come out first you must win every battle. If you achieve first place, you win money that can be spent on caps in Mr popo's shop.(Don't worry if you don't know who that is). Another fantasic element in DBZ budokai is that you can swap caps with another player. Therefore the game is much more fun if a friend buys it too. Graphics are appropratly cartoon-like but good all the same. Some of the music in the game is taken from the cartoon. The gameplay can get a bit monotenous, expecially in vs mode. You end up just playing safe and using the same moves over and over. In spite of that, you won't get bored with Budokai for a long time, and a lot longer if a friend has it.
