This Is the best DBZ game ever!!!!! |
| Immanuel Chavoya from Cupertino, California says (12/Jan/2003): |
I am an all around anime fan. It just so happens Dragonball got me started on anime 8 years ago and ever since I have seen every movie, played every Dragonball game and watched every avalible episode. When I bought this game i thought it would be okay, maybe a little better than FINAl BOUT, which sucked,Boy was I suprised that two weeks had passed me by And I Still Loved IT. I cant say this is the best fighting game ever, but it isnt bad. I follows very close to the series and the intro is from the movies(worlds strongest, tree of mightand dead zone).I would covet this game if I were you, and if your really good invite friends over to play, because theres nothing worse than losing to a friend whos never played the game.If you have looked into it, you'll know you can go to Mr. popos shop and buy cool stuff to customize your best charecter. If your lucky youll come across all the dragonballs and you can call upon shenron to grant you a wish(this is my favorite). If you a hardcore gamer like me you will see that it is a fun game but the gameplay gets a little repeditive and most of the moves(combinations) are the same buttons for every charecter. In other words, if you are a good player withone charecter, youll do well with many charecters.all of the charecters voices from the anime on cartoon network are the same in this game,no cheap voice sound alikes.which is why this is like owning a piece of the animes history to me its like a cel but those things are hundreds this is a good priced item,$50 buck somplaces $40 other it just depends wher and when you shop.

A Great Game beter than the other dbz games |
| Brian Christopher from Hawaii USA says (18/Jan/2003): |
I think this game is the best so far of all the Dbz games. Graphics are good voices nice except cell perfect and friezas voice could use some work. Don't get me wrong this game has great improvemants. I only have a few problems with the game.
1 in the cutscenes kid gohan is way too tall. 2. why can't u jump. 3 the break outs are murder on the fingers 4 you can't fly unless u get knocked in the air or u knock ur oppenent in the air. Aside from tese few problems the game is great if u want to email me go ahead...
|
MUCH better then I thought it would be!!! |
| Evan from Pickering, Ontario says (29/Jan/2003): |
I got this game for Christmas, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I expected just another fighting game only with characters from my favourite series. There are only 2 things I would have liked. 1 - I wish there was a little more freedom in flight, and 2 - I wish the "Great" Saiyaman was a little Greater you know? He has no KI waves, ok maybe gohan wanted to pretend he was someone else but still, it was a crappy unlockable, Hercule is better...I never thought I'd be saying that! But thats just a minor problem, the rest of the game is GREAT. I liked the unlockable characters, fighting environments and capsules, and storylines. My favourite character is my custom Trunks with Super Trunks2 ability. But my custom teen Gohan isn't too bad either. Actually all the saiyans are good. In short this is one of the best games I have ever played, and I don't usually even LIKE fighting games very much. So what are you doing reading this review? Go play the darn game!!!

A very strong title. Best in the series by a mile. |
| Shin Suzuma from England, London says (7/Feb/2003): |
If you have played the previous DBZ games, you won't be expecting much of the latest one, budokai, but suprisingly it is one of the best games of its genre.
You start off with four fighting modes: vs, practice, world tournament and story.
In the story mode, you take on the role of the characters in the real manga. They all look exactly like in the manga except they are in 3d. In the story mode you there is one playable saga and two locked sagas. After you complete the first you move on to the next.In each saga there are on average 10 episodes. After you complete each one you recieve a capsule. Each capsule that you gain in the story mode can be character, an ability that aids you in battle automaticly, a transformation into a supieror form or an offensive fighting move. Another way to earn caps is to fight in the tournament. There are three levels of difficulty but only the easiest is available to you at the start. The is tournament is a simple knockout tournament. To come out first you must win every battle. If you achieve first place, you win money that can be spent on caps in Mr popo's shop.(Don't worry if you don't know who that is). Another fantasic element in DBZ budokai is that you can swap caps with another player. Therefore the game is much more fun if a friend buys it too. Graphics are appropratly cartoon-like but good all the same. Some of the music in the game is taken from the cartoon. The gameplay can get a bit monotenous, expecially in vs mode. You end up just playing safe and using the same moves over and over. In spite of that, you won't get bored with Budokai for a long time, and a lot longer if a friend has it.

Where's Kid Buu? Apart from that, excellent! |
| Kid Buu from Planet Buu! says (8/Feb/2003): |
The game is even better if you are into the cartoon itself! It never get's boring with it's magnificent gameplay, and outstanding graphics.
The goods
The graphics, the graphics are great and very good 3D effects! I love the way the saiyans can advance up levels of power and get a super saiyan flame around them! There is proper effect backgrounds and full attack motions!
Gameplay. The gameplay is excellent and very impressive. There is 3 sagas, unlockable characters and season mode!
|
the game is great but where is Buu? |
| Larry from Winston salem North Carolina says (14/Feb/2003): |
The first time I played it I rented it. The bad thing is the two days i rented it i beat it. But that don`t change the fact that it was awesome. The graphics are good, so is the sound. But there lies one more question...where the hell is Buu? I mean he is awesome. And anyone will vouch with me too. But overall a great game i would recamend buying it.

Great Game |
| Tony from New York says (15/Feb/2003): |
Okay, first of all, I want to say that this is a great game, even though it is quite short; but people are rating it down because of that. You have to admit, it is one of the longest fighting games out there; it's not meant to be an rpg, folks. Also, many people are asking where Buu is. All I have to say about that is, when the Buu season of DBZ started, they were already making this game. It seems a little farfetched, but in truth, it takes years to make video games. In fact, I'm a little surprised that they managed to fit Cell in there. Well, as Forrest Gump may say, that's all I have to say about that :) Peace \/

Great Game!! |
| A gamer from West Haven, CT says (14/Mar/2003): |
When i first started playing this game after renting it, I immediately knew I had to buy it. It has it all. The graphis are great. They really capture all of the emotions and expressions each character is unique for haveing. The sound is great to. It is always upbeat and always different in which ever mode you chooses. Gameplay was awesome. The many different choices (i.e story, duel, legend of Hercule) are amazing and kept me playing for hours! It is fun beyond expectations and I think a must have for any DBZ fan.
|
The game is very short! |
| J.J says (22/Mar/2003): |
Graphics. The graphics are very good I must admit, they are very detailed for cartoon characters. There is over 12 different locations to battle and they are all very impressive, the graphics are overall very impressive and hard to be improved in my opinion. Sound. The sound is one of the main problems, why is there not any proper dbz series music, why do the characters speak japenese and voices sound far much different which spoils it terribly. The sound effects on the super saiyan transformation however are magnificent, and the crashing into mountains effects are great! Gameplay. The gameplay is very fun, and entertaining, but it is jut far too short during story mode! It lasts for about a week before you unlock everything, the story mode is missing alot too, it skips important scenes such as Cell absorbtion technique. However it does include details like Gohans arm when it is broken during battle. There is an impressive tournament mode where you can win prize money, you can visit a capsule shop which is a good idea, there is alot of exciting factors that you will discover if you rent this game. So the gameplay is pretty good I guess, and there is blood. However, it is like Tekken accept you can fly and use energy blasts! Lifespan. It will last very long and the game is pretty tough because it alway falls on the floor it still works! Overall, a very good game and a great attempt!

great game but needs work! |
| The messiah from Cedar, Michigan says (27/Mar/2003): |
First of all this game was almost, exactly following the story line of DBZ up to the end of cell games. the graphics are all really awesome. They did a really great job.(well as good as funimation can get) One of the drawbacks that really bugged me was the circles all of the character have for shadows. that is the only graphical error I found. the music needs direction. And aside from the extremly short gameplay (took me 4 hours to beat the main game first day I had it) if you are looking for a multiplayer fighting game based on DBZ, you will love this game! Hey if funimation got together with the makers of Tekken 4, they would have made the absolute best fighting game to date!
|
best game I've ever played it's awsome |
| dbzfancool ssj 3 from orlando fl usa says (19/Apr/2003): |
the game is awsome some parts can get pretty hard though but once you get used to it it's perfect . the characters are awsome some are freaky or stupid though. but all in all the game is the best i've ever played and i think it's cool that you can customize your own character!
|
A great game, that it is. |
| larry_sk8 from Michigan, the USA says (28/Apr/2003): |
The game over all is great and everything. The game just needs a better fighting system. Another flaw is the fact that it has nothing to do with actual power level. Krillin was somehow able to beat Gohan(that's who I was) even though I had him go Super Saiyan-jin 2. What I love about it is to finally be able to go to Super Saiyan-jin. Basically, it's one of the best I've ever played.
|
Great!!! Could have been awsome! |
| Yasmany from orlando, Florida USA says (6/May/2003): |
I really liked this game. It would have been even better if they had more bonuses after beating story mode. Life a feature that lets you create your ouwn character and train him. Gaining levels is also a must. and the created characters should not become invincible. only as strong as Super saiyan 2 gohan. Also the create your own character feature should allow you to choose physical characteristics from other dbz games.
|
Lesson for the future |
| Vegeta's Final Flash from Bruges, Belgium says (11/May/2003): |
Well, I agree with what alot of people say: the Babidi and Buu saga's should be in the game, and thus also SSJ3 Goku, and Vegetto. I'd even say they had to put a few extra's in the game, like a few characters from the DBZ-movies... I'd also want to say that the main menu is pretty child-like, and besides, DBZ is not for the small kids, I'm 16 myself, and I still ove it. Another bad point is that you can't fly at will, that' can be really irritating some times. And alot of special things from the series are left out. Though that doesn't mean the game is bad, no! It's great! But it could have been even greater. If BANDAI makes another game for PS2 in this style, they should definetely make Dragon Ball Budokai! Just think about it, we've had a DBZ-game in this genre, how cool would it be to have the exact same, but then in DB-style??
|
Was okay |
| Cloud from Pittsburgh, Pa USA says (12/May/2003): |
All the reviews up here make good points. The begining is very childlike and there should be a better/longer story mode. Not to mention they should of at least let you play the story modeinstead of cutting scenes out. Flaying should be done at will and the game should be more fast paced. I also think the struggle for the Dragonballs was pretty cool. But the reward sucks big time. THe breakthrough is cool and all but it be better if yu could wish for more then that. More characters and more details. Seems like they rushed the game. But other then that it is enjoyable. Just could be much better. A better version of Mortal Combat it could of been.
|
well.... |
| Catherine/Cat from USA says (4/Jun/2003): |
I think the game was great but it didn't have as many characters as i hoped it would. I also noticed that all the chracters basically have the same techniques when you ignore the different colors of the beams and the names. Another thing that bothered me was the fact that FUNimation helped with the game, they totally butchered the anime with their stupid quotes and all the editing. But this was the best DBZ game I've seen so far in America and I hope they make another one.
|
awsome |
| Junito from USA says (8/Jun/2003): |
the game is One of the best fighting games i have ever played. i especally like the story mode.they sound so real.the only thing that is messed up is you need a code to geat s.s.4 goku.other than that the game is hot.when part two comes out that is definetly the first game i am going two by.
|
Spectacular, I never had so much fun playing a Dragon Ball Z game before. |
| Clifford Golembiewski from Tucson, AZ 85750, USA says (11/Jun/2003): |
The graphics were great for a game of its time period, the special attacks deserve more than a worthy effort, and also I enjoyed the voice imput on every character from the series which makes it twice as fun to play, and hear. Those who give it any lower then a 9, are idiots and cannot enjoy a fine game like Dragon Ball Z Budokai. When buying the dragon balls it takes a little to long, but when you make your wish after all that time after buying them trust me it is well worth the wait.
