pretty good | | sean randle from Indianapolis,Indiana. USA says (29/Oct/2003): | Overall this game was pretty tight, the graphics were off the hook, the sound was great, and the fun factor was excellent and so was the story line; and best of all the characters real voices are on the game, but this game could use some major improvements. For one this game didn't have long enough gameplay because it ended too quickly. The moves were good, but they were all the same like goku's dragon fist, and the ranma with piccolo, all the ki attacks were also the same, the only difference was that it was done with a different character with a different name, like the raining ki blast with one of the other characters and the parmesan shower with Captain Ginyu and so were many other attacks. When someone does an attacks they should not only have a ki guage but they should also have something like an attack guage so they can build up the level of an attack; like instead of a regular kamahemaha they can build it up to five levels on the gauge making it stronger. Another thing on the game they need to work on is age of the game .The game seems like its for ages 10 and under, there is no blood shed when fighting for a long period of time, and the insults they say while fighting are not like anything the characters would say on T.V, and basically the fighting is just not fierce enough going along with the need for better sound effects in battle..Another thing they should take into consideration is when a character powers up to a new level it should be the way it is on the cartoon series; For instance if you're super saiyan or you should have a golden glow around you and if you're super saiyan 2 you have a golden glow with sparks of electricity around you and if you're Kamicolo you should have a white glow around you. When powering up they should have special effects like ground breaking, earth rumbling, fierce winds, lighting strikes,ect..ect..Flying on the game is also a problem, you shouldn't have to knock a character in the air to allow yourself to fly you should be able to do it manually, and while doing this, just to keep people from cheating, if you are flying, your ki gauge slowly decreases, because that's the way it is on the cartoon.Having a 7 max guage for a super saiyan or any other advanced leveled character is pointless, when a character reaches a new level their guage should increase because the higher level you go your guage decreases faster making it harder for you to complete a move necessary for that level.Goku has so many levels it's so hard for him to complete the spirit bomb with his guage draining like that, especially how easy it is to get knock down.Something else about the game isn't realistic either do you actually think a normal level person in the game could stand up to super saiyan vegeta up VS. regular krillin. I've almost begun to think the rising levels are only to complete the super moves and not to increase the players strengths. Each character should be unique in fighting and not the same monotonous combos each character posesses. The look of the super moves should also be redone.the galik gun, kamahemaha,or death beam shouldn't be a ball of light, but rather a continuous beam of visible of light coming towards you. They're also many special features which should have been on Budokai 1 or DBZ Budokai 2. Saiyans should have the opportunity to turn into an Oozaurus and fuse with anyone just call it a crazy idea.
| the best game ive ever seen | | A gamer from england, birmingham says (9/Nov/2003): | this game was the best and i cant wait for the second 1 2 come out the graphics are wicked. this game has heavy fighting skills but the backgrounds could improve.the sound of the voices should be in english so we could understand it better and it has slow loading.
| This Game RULES!!!!! | | Nasko from Newton, Massachusetts says (25/Nov/2003): | SCREW all the people that say this game is crap. This game is the best game ever! Beating other people with out of this world powers and energies that can destroy a planet is just the greatest thing. And wat's with all the people that say that this game really easy? The game is actually hard. If you think that this game is easy, try playing the very last chapter where SS2 Gohan has to beat Cell. After beating that without losing at lest 2 times then you can sat that this game is easy. Also I hate the people that say that this game's moves are messed up. The graphics and the effects of the moves are great.
However, there are some things I would like to see in the game. Things like being able to fly on your own. I mean the characters being able to fly is one of the coolest parts of the fighs. Also I think that when you get hammered by one of those level-destroying moves like burning attack and Big Bang attack, your character's clothes should really get all cool and ripped with blood and bruises everywhere like the chapter where Goku is fighting Frieza. That would be great. But even with those little exceptions, you can't say this game is bad. It's da best fighting game ever and I hate anybody who doesn't think so!!!
| dbz budokai2 is tight!!!!!!!! | | adrian buislay from norwalk CA,U.S.A says (1/Jan/2004): | this is one of the best games out there.da grafix are tight and the voices make it like your watching da show.budokai2 is tighter, the many charecters,da grafix, etc.that sux gohan can only go SS2.da characters are cool but they should have put cooler,broly,android#19,and kid gohan.its dumb dat after so many years goku, vegeta, don't get old.it would have been better to have a super secret charecter like gokus dad or king kai.the gameplay is cool, but should stretch a little farther then da buu saga.whats cool about both budokai games is dat there unique no other fighting game has this much originality.one of the things that was cooler budokai1 was the skill shop, you chose a support capsule, you got a support capsule.in budokai2 1,500 for great saiyaman justice punch.and da TOURNAMENTS SHOULDNT be a knock out of da ring automatic win.when you turn super saiyan or another transformation, your ki gauge should go up another level.another thing dat woulda been better was if they had that krillen cell like in krillens dream in dragonball z budokai1.if you could be majin buu, super buu,kid buu, saibamen,or junior cell and be like in budokai1 where you just beat someone and you unlock em that would be really TIGHT!!!!
| Its cool and awsome | | Daryl Brown,Videl,Goku,Gohan, and anima people of the heavens watching over me from asheville says (5/Dec/2003): | I've had DragonBallZ Budokai1 since probably August.Budakai fans DragonBallZ Budokai2 is already out folks but still dont give up on DragonBallZ Budokai1. The story mode is pretty awsome and I still think Budokai1 rocks. If anyone still ever visits this site please read this message of the hopes that Budokai1 exists as a favirote.(I dont have an email of my own but I'm going to use my moms. Please dont email my mom.)The graphics are awsome even though I dont have Budokai2. Trunks and gohan ROCK!ITS a shame they dont have kid gohan in Budokai2.And what I hate about gohan is that you cant get get older gohan out that rediculus Saiyiman costume, and you cant even get Higher than a SS2 level that sucks.
And why dont they have kid trunks and goten.Includingly Friezas death beam move,in the show his death beam attack went straight through the characters and he could probably multiply over 200 death beams less than 5 minutes. What cant he do that in Budokai1.HUUUUUH!Whats the point.Budokai rules anyway. If youre a Budokai hate, sad isnt it.The stroy mode is cool but is only goes onto the Cell saga and ends.then you go back through story mode Mode and rebeat episodes and unlock new characters.
Why dont they have Buu any how.STRANGE ISNT IT.And I'm lonely at home by my self and cold. One of the Best things I love about DragonBallz Bodukai1 is the limitless skills you unlock, equip to your character, and whoop some but.Any one who visits this site please remember me as you read this next year or whenever and remember this review in the cold wintery past,of the year 2003.Then I will arise and continue my reviews if any one comes visit this site. This report sure is taking a long time to type out.So please give your comments of what you Think of this review if you feel like it.
| good game but rushed story | | Recoome!!!!!!eraser gun!!! fuck yeah from vic says (19/Aug/2003): | story is totally rushed and the battles should be more plentiful and it takes so long to collect all the dragon balls whats with that? does any1 kno how to get all of them? its got great graphics but needs more charecters gameplay:10 graphics:9
SOUND:11/10 Story:8
| amazing game | | A gamer from belfast says (30/Oct/2003): | i ust want to say screw all of those guys that say it suck dbz is amazing i love it is so cool I'd give this game a 9, because on the game, we cannot fly on our own. Like, in order to fly we haft to be knocked into the sky by the opponnent. I hope its not like that in budokai2. In story mode I thought that we get to choose a story with one of the Z fighters. Another thing that bothers me is the stages. Why can't we fight in ground, mountains and stuff like that in the TV show. On the Namek level, how come we can't knock people into twisters that's in the background, after we blow it up with spirit bomb, burning attack, super kamehameha, and etc. Otherwise, this game is off the chain. The story is kinda short in a way, and some scenes in the is not what they said at all. Such as: When Goku was fighting Frieza, and he turned into a ssj, he shouted that he was a super saiyan, when he did not know what he was in the TV show. Budokai is the best fighting game that I ever played. I just hope budokai2 is the next game that will make my jaw drop.
| Excellent value for your $3 | | JuzzyDee from Victoria, Australia says (26/Oct/2003): | Yes, Hire it! You'll be finished it in one night, will have mastered all the moves, and unlocked everything there is within 2 days, a week for the not so serious gamer at the most. This game has excellent potential, although I found the combos to be somewhat lackin in any sort of need for skill, and the difficulty level of the game was about as bad as I think i've seen in any game, rather than make the game harder, as the same boring old combos that you land the same way at the same speed with no so called "skill" being involved. Excellent viewing, but not worth buying outright, treat it like it is, an interactive movie.
| Good.....but hop budokai2 will be much better | | King Vegeta from Orlando, Florida, USA says (10/Nov/2003): | I think the game was pretty good in fitting everybody's attacks in and everything. Plus almost every character that plays a fighting role in the 3 sagas are playable, which is pretty cool. But wat is with all the blocking? There is a thing called Gero's perpatual energy thingy that gives u unlimited energy. You can just stand there and block while the other guy is punchin and shootong weaker energy attacks at u. And computers never use there energy anyhow. But it was an allaround game that i think was pretty close tu the TV show. I just hope budokai 2 is better. Oh....and wat is with no cheats!
| Finally a Decent Dragonball Z Game | | A gamer from Nowhereville, Weststate, United States says (25/Jul/2003): | The game is tremendous as far as being faithful to the series, the characters having the same voices as the show, and the special attacks being extremely devastating as they are in the show. However, some of the basic grab-and-throw moves are the same but are called different names. Also, the fact that you can unlock the Great Saiyaman but cannot fight against Pikkon is a bit disappointing. In the series it was Pikkon who was faster than Cell, and by Goku beating Pikkon...well, it proved Goku was destined for greatness. But, I play the game a lot. It's the best.
| Best Dragonballz Game Ever! | | Chris Ratcliff from Parma Ohio,USA says (12/Aug/2003): | Dragonballz Budokai is the best DBZ game ever. It blows final bout and battle22 away.Legacy of Goku and Legacy of Goku2 are good but budokai is better by far.The whole game design is great.I love the way the story is set up.The moves are sweet too.The idea of capsules for custom guys is cool.I can't wait to play Budokai2.One problem with the game is in the tournament. How the computers try to knock you out of the ring so much.Thats the only real problem with the game.Next thing isn't really a problem but Great Saiyman should have more moves and maybe Android 20 should have been put in.I mean since 16,17,18,19,and Cell are in the game. Also why aren't all of the Ginyu Force in the game. Why are just Captain Ginyu and Recome in it,and not Burter,Jeice, and Guldo.I hope that the guys in Budokai2 have a good amount of moves.Personally my guy in budokai is 17 and Krillen. My cousins guys are Trunks,Tien,Picolo,18,Hercule,Kid Gohan,Teen Gohan,Vegeta, and Yamcha. As I said Budokai is the best DBZ game ever.I give it a 10 out of 10.
| Budikai RULEZ!! | | Animegirl1989 from Genoa City,U.S.A. says (3/Oct/2003): | The first time I played this game, I did not put the controller down! Not even for one second! I also can't wait for the second Budikai game coming in December. I think the graphics are cool, and the voices for the characters is just, wow. But, now they took DBZ off the air:(, so I'm playing the game alot now. I just love the game, and, most guys (and some girls, inclding myself)must have(or already have) Dragon Ball Z:Budokai.
| This game was sweet, but it could've been better. | | steven and cheater, tim from Hohenfels, germany says (11/Oct/2003): | this game was pretty cool because you had a wide selection of characters and there is a lot to do. the story mode is pretty easy so i'm looking forward to the second one because there is no story mode in that one. this game takes you all the way to the cell saga, if you're looking for a good action game you might like this one but you might not. it has cool stuff like a tournament. i don't like how hard it is to get the dragonballs and i don't like the graphics which is another reason i look forward to the second one that's coming out in December of 2003. here's a little cheat to get all breakthroughs, this is how it goes, you get three memory cards, one with all the dragonballs, copy it to another memory card, and whatever memory card you choose to get all breakthroughs on, use the dragon, now for the third memory card trade the dragonballs that you did not use, then copy to the memory card that you are using. repeating this over and over again, in about thirty minutes, u should have all breakthroughs but u don't want to be a little cheater so do it the real way unlike my friend tim over here. it was his idea to write that. cheater. oh well, this game is awesome and we liked it. ps. i am not gay.
| hard and easy | | Daniel from denver,colorado,U.S.A says (27/Oct/2003): | Dragon BAllz: budokai is the best game, but some times in the world tournement it is hard! getting all drgonballs are really easy. u can buy them at mr popos shop! the hardest level in story mode i think is vegeta saiyan prince. but other stuff is not hard. the secret charecters are great sayman and hercuel.
| Budokai is the best game ever!!!! | | Kevin from Holland says (8/Nov/2003): | This is the best game ever,it has beautiful graphics, and the characters are cool, the world match is pretty dificult, especially on advanced,i always get knocked out,but is the best game, forget the bad reviewers,i always wanted this game because the game is very cool, and the beautiful graphics.
| excellent game but needs slight improvements | | Jesus from Jacksonville, Florida, USA says (18/Feb/2004): | Dragonball Z Budokai is a very good game. The graphics are excellent, the music goes well with the story, and the moves are awesome. But the game needs a little more variety though; for example, every character has similar moves. The game would be 100 out of 10 if you could take the moves that they do in the series and use it in the game. Also, I have to admit the graphics are great, but you can at least put bruises and ripped clothing and stuff like that on your opponent to be more realistic, ya know? Honestly, it is my favorite game of all time. The game play is awesome. Also, it is extremely addictive. The first day I started playing the game I did not turn it off ‘till like midnight or a little later. It is a very good game. My all-time favorite attack is Final Flash. My favorite thing in the whole game is the Story Mode. It’s like watching the series itself, but you do the battles. It should be done to every Budokai game released for those who do not know the series that well. This game is extremely original. The battles are fought very differently (in a good way). This is the best fighting game I have ever played. Also, I understand not having much life in the story mode (since you have to be realistic), but in duels against a friend you should have the option of having more life since some death moves makes it less fun since they do massive damage. In addition to that, characters in story mode should not have the same attack and defense power. For example, Goku is 1,000,000,000 times more powerful than Kid Gohan. The powers of characters should be like in the series to make it a better challenge. I must be boring y’all but to summarize it all, THIS GAME IS AWESOME! I recommend anyone to buy this game. You will never grow tired of it! 100% guarantee! Have fun!
| By far the best!! | | Jerry from Mountain View, CA, USA says (16/Aug/2003): | This game, while has room for improvement, is the best. The fighting styles, the graphics, the story....etc. I can go on and on. The only thing that I would've liked to see is a little bit more of everything! I can't wait for the next instalment of Dragon Ball Z. I wonder if they're going to do a GT version for the third game. I hope they do. I also hope that the second one is much better in that it'll have more level upgrading and more versitle techniques. Ka Me Ha Me HAA!!
| KA...ME...HA...ME...Awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!! | | Jason Lee from Missouri,USA says (30/May/2004): | I have played both Budokia one and two and they both have more good (cool) points than bad points. In Budokia 2 the graphics are more cartoony. There are some errors.Like when you pick Gohan as a ally he is a adult. He is supossed to be a kid and a teen for most of the game.I think the sound is kind of falty like volleyball fist and wolf fang volleyball fist. You can hardly uderstand Tien and Tiencha.I can understand why they give all the Majin Buus so much life but I just do not think it is fair.I like to test out the fusions.I already have all the fusions.I guess I can tell you who they are.The real fusions are Vegeto (Goku and Vegeta Patria earings)Kabitoshin (Kabito and Surpreme Kia Pataria earings) and Gotanks (Trunks and Gotin Fusion dance). The made up fusions are Gokule (Goku and Hercule Pataria earings)(can you believe it?)My favorite Tiencha (Tien and Yamcha Fusion Dance). My favorite move is Burning Slash even though it is hard to do. Over all I loved this game.My mom thinks I play to much.(That is because I like it!!!!!)
| Awesome | | BabaRoshi from Dallas, Texas says (26/Dec/2002): | I've played DBZ games of the past (Final Bout, SNES), and they just don't compare at all. Budokai kicks it hardcore style. The only thing I would change about it is the COM AI. In Tournament Mode, the punk-azz COM always goes for the cheap Ring Out win which really pi$$es me off! The DBZ characters have too much pride and confidence in their skills to be so cheap! Ring Outs should be more accidental, or a finishing move...I like a fight to the finish.
| Finally, a decent DBZ game for fans of the show. | | GuardianD from Baltimore, MD, USA says (27/Dec/2002): | DBZ:Budokai isn't for everyone. I'd have to say that right up front. If you are a hardcore fighting game fan, rent it first. If you are a hardcore DBZ fan, you will enjoy owning it, but will notice little mistakes that will "urk" you a bit.
Personally, I'm a fan of the show, though I prefer "Capcom style" fighting games. (Dear Lord, if only they could get their hands on the rights to make one!) However, Budokai isn't a terrible disappoinment. If you've ever played Tekken, Virtua Fighter, or Dead Or Alive games, you'll be able to pick up the combo system in this game quite well. You may find that the controls seem a little "slugish", as it's seems most people have. (Try using a standard DualShock (tm) controller, as sometimes it seems to accept the button presses better. Might have something to do with the pressure sensitive buttons on a DualShock2 (tm).) Anyhow, most people are complaining about the fact that all the characters have similar combo-button layouts. If you stop to think about it, this was a much needed feature. Playing through the story mode, using various characters, you need to be able to pick up each character's moves immediately. This was the best, if not only, way to do that. The story mode follows the show quite nicely, but there are little "bugs" that fans will see... might even have you saying out loud, "That's not how that went!" All in all, the story mode is strong, with nice little "side stories", that lend a "what if?" twist to it.
The Duel Mode is probably where you will spend most of your time, if you play with friends. The only draw back to this is the Custom Skills set. While it does tend to give a little more variety to the game, some of the skill settings are a bit lame. I mean, it takes 4 of 7 slots to even have Goku be a Super Saiyan, where all the others can have it in just one?
World Championship Mode is a standard "tounament mode", that pretty much every fighter game has. It's not really any different, however... the fact that you can beat the CPU to near KO, and he knocks you out of the ring so frequently will certainly annoy you. You pretty much have to be on the aggresive 99% of the time, and hope that he/she doesn't catch you in mid-attack. No real time to "charge up" and use your specials.
Overall, this game is the one that fans of the series have been waiting for... almost. It has it's flaws, but is by FAR the best DBZ fighter available so far. As for challenge, the Tournament is the most difficult aspect, given the "Ring Out" portion. You can get through the Story Mode in about an hour and a half, two hours, from the first moment you put it in. It's replay value is still rather high, if you are a fan of the show. (Having Goku pull his "warp kamehameha" is just too cool.)
In the end, fans of the show will still be left wanting a little more out of their favorite fighting themed game... but it's enough to hold you over until they finally get it right. It's a lot of fun to play, and could be a welcome addition to your collection if you are a DBZ fan. On the other hand, if you are just a fighter fan, you might be better off picking up Tekken 4.
