Loved it |
| A gamer from California says (1/Jan/2004): |
I played the game. I beat it and enjoyed it. I thought that the best improvement to the game would be to make all the shopping places open and houses open so Mark Hammond can start real crime and rob banks. If the game just added this sort of thing then it would be even greater than grand theft auto. The graphics were awsome though, I give that a 10. Free roaming should have been better than just driving around. If the game ever had a part two , My suggestion would be to make an open bank , a Mac Donald's , an office building , everything that Mark Hammond can walk in and out of instead of roaming in only a car. This would make the game fun because driving shouldn't only be a factor in the game. Starting crime in and out of Mac Donalds would be my example of the game fun factor.

Fantastic |
| Steph Morris from Stoke on Trent, England says (21/Oct/2003): |
The Getaway is a great game with graphics that are so realistic you actually get the feelin that you are driving around the streets of London! The plot is based on two characters, Mark Hammond and PC carter and with these two characters you try and infiltrate the notorious Charlie Jolson. The value of the game is brilliant as it can keep you entertained for hours and have you on the edge of your seat as you try and wipe out the triad gang and get chased after by the yardies. Similar to GTA yet the lock, stock and barrel element adds more delight! if you dont have this game in your collection, then i reccommend you buy it today!

i liked the game |
| Dustin from RosevilleMI USA says (5/Feb/2003): |
i thought the game was good allthough the controlls could of been better, they are easy to get used to i just wish you could change them in options or somthing. i don't like invert when shoting i like to push up and aim up not push up and look down but that happends with alot of games and you can usually change that but not in this game. the cars are cool because they are actual cars i just don't like how slowly they take off.i liked the swaring in the game the more the better. i think their should be more games just for adults. over all the game is sweet but to short. i beat it in just a few days about four hours a day i can't wait to see another one with the improvments but it was a good game.the grafix were really good and the gameplay was fun and kept your intrest allthough i did not like that you could not skip the theatrix. the sound was very good, vocies were done very well also. i think it was worth my 40 bucks. i wish it was a little longer though.i am still waiting for a game of this type to be very long ware i can play for hours and hours and still not come close be completion. the story was real cool i thought, it was like a movie you could play becuase it looked so good i have been waiting for somthing like this.

Getaway, The: A review for the Gamer by the Gamer. |
| Joshua A.K.A. Rathamus from Minnesota, USA says (5/Feb/2003): |
I bought this "3rd person" game with the impression that it was gonna kick the crap out of Vice City. I take it home, pop it in, and right from the beginning I am VERY impressed with the motion capture movies and the plot. Graphics are seamless and very well done (minues the cigar smoke that appears to pass through characters smoking them). There was a great deal of detail that was placed in the game from the characters, the cars, buildings, everything. The best feature about the game is its realism. This includes the fact that there is no health bar, no "definite" timer (although some missions are timed), cars react and handle like most would assume they would, and there is no indicator what so ever on your screen. Bullet holes and blood splatters were also very real looking. As I delved further and further into the game I began to realize there were many severe "problems" with it. First off, the controls were poorly done. The layout is nice but there is no option to change them or as it was stated earlier, "change the invert-nomal" aiming options. Another problem was that scenery is VERY fixed. The last time I checked you dont drive through a sign without knocking it over. You simply slam into a sign or post and it slows you down and you drive through it but the object remains. The camera angles were very poor in many situations. I cannot recall how many times I have died because I could not look the direction I wanted/needed to. It was very Resident Evil. The auto targeting could have used alot more work. Many times you end up aiming at the wrong person or worse, you cant aim up or down very far whereas the AI can, killing you in the long run. The controls can be very annoying in tight spaces (The Police Station) comes to mind when getting busted you get bashed trying to bash another person but end up clinging to a wall which brings me to another point. Because of the poor controls it is often hard to tell if you are going to cling to a wall, drop behind an object for cover, evasively roll, or grab someone from behind. The lack of a map driven guidance system of some sort also short-hands the gameplay. It is very easy to overshoot a turn by about a mile and end up taking some scenic detour costing you time and patience. The signals used on the car to guide you could have used a little more work. Another HUGE handi-cap would be the fact you cannot change your car views. You cannot look to the side or behind your car at any time, which would help to determine how close or far away pursuing vehicles are.
Other than these minor *cough* setbacks, the game is definetly something to try if you liked GTA3, Vice City, Max Pain, etc.

Not F#@*ing Bad, Bring on Part 2! |
| Daniel Tolley from Memphis, TN USA says (8/Feb/2003): |
Most people try to compare The Getaway to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and in turn, are disappointed when they find out that the only real connection the two games share is the Mafia type theme. Unlike the latter, that is made for good wholesome mass carnage, The Getaway is centered around realism. For some this may cause a problem because you may be used to having maps, health bars, and also knowing how much ammo you have left. Not with The Getaway. There are, in my opinion, several things in this game that I believe need improvement. First of all, the controls could use a little work. The layout of the button presses and configurations is decent, but when immersed in a gun fight or trying to get out of one, the controls can sometimes get you a new friend...the coroner. The next potential killer is the camera movement and angles. With the realism, I don't expect to see everything, but there are several places that you would definitely be able to see something, but can't, because the camera is focused in the wrong angle or direction. Not good...here comes the body bag. The other improvements needed have to do with the driving aspect of the game. For instance, I believe you should be able to look left, right, and behind while driving. This would not effect the realism due to the fact that we can actually see in those directions while driving in our boring, can't plow pedestrians, "real" life. Another problem I had with the driving aspect is being able to bail out of a car while moving. With this complaint, I would like to keep the realism amd recieve varied health damage depending on speed and what you may have impacted with. Overall, I rate The Getaway as an 8 out of 10 because of the realism, the story, and my love for rampant carnage. This is definetly a must play, as long as you don't mind a few minor problems.

so ya think its for adults |
| kc from USA rocks says (14/Feb/2003): |
I'm 12 and i think this game is da boom it rocks. The only bad thing is the guns nought enough we need m16s rifles machine guns it is one bad ass game. Oh and the cheats need to be better and you need to be able to have roam as an option and be able to go in all stores and bars.

Why The Getaway is better than GTA. |
| Spike Lee from Norway says (3/Mar/2003): |
First of all. When I bought TG, I really thought it was a lame game. But a friend of mine recommended it so I bought it. I do not regret it. Now. Comparing TG to GTA is like comparing pizza to pancakes. You like them both or just one of them. But they are not same type of food. TG and GTA are not the same type of game. GTA is and will always be an arcade game. Based on points or money the object is to have a lot of them. TG is more of an simulation or maybe a movie game, where the object is to make it through the game.
"Duh! You can steal cars in both games."
So what!?!?! You can also fly a helicopter in GTA. Does that mean it is a helicopter sim? Maybe you can compare it to Microsoft Flight Simulator?
So why is TG better than GTA.
Simple: TG amuses the player by involving him/her to push the story on. You are then rewarded by nice cutscenes before you continue. The story is original and you feel a part of the game.
GTA on the other hand amuses the player by having freedom. Think of it. By having all that freedom, you are served a $#< remove me > at !ty story and missions that you HAVE to complete or you dont get that extra car,gun or building. The GTA missions would be completed in half hour if it werent for all that driving around you do in between missions.
But still. Both games are really fun, but they are not comparable.

Great game with minor flaws. THe graphics are excellent but could have been better in the parks. Driving aspect is good a realistic. Needs a few more weapons and should have had access to Subway stations. Good replicas of London and excelent sound. |
| Nippun Sofat from Auckland, New Zealand says (29/Sep/2003): |
The Getaway is diffenetly not an average game. First of all Team Soho have created nearly an exact replica of London. The sound is very good because it has a fast tempo in the action scences. THe graphics are great. THe textures used are very real unlike Vice City which is like a cartoon. The Getaway in my opinion needs a few more weapons. But I must admit that having thousands of weapons can make the game very unreal. You should be able to accss the subway stations (they are always locked). The cars are real with good physics and textures. There should be motor bikes. It is good that the game has double deckers because it protects you well from the cops. I think that it is great how you can crouch under objects, shuffle along walls and espicially take pedestrians hostage. The police go a bit easy on you and it seems that they only go after you if you crash right in front of their car. The graphics on the parks of London are a bit Playstation 1 ish which is a bit disapointing. The game suffers a few flaws. When you kill someone and look away and then back, sometimes their body vanishes and you can walk right though a dead body. In the first level I was playing when I got to Charlie's warehouse. I stole the red car and bashed the entarance. The car went right through and the door was as good as new. I also don't see the need to have petrol drums. I mean why would a warehouse have petrol drums just lying there for no purpose. Ther getaway probably has the best story line in any game created. The voices are very british and they link up the missions very well. The Getway 2 is coming out and it looks promising. The game has already gone platnium ($59.95 NZ, $18 pounds $25 american)and sold more than 500,000 copies. A must buy for any PS2 owner.
|
Exelent graphics but lacks in realism |
| Adam Cleland from eastbourne, england says (13/Mar/2003): |
The getaway has got brilliant graphics and good attention to detail but it is not very realistic e.g when a car hits you at about 5 miles per hour it kills you wheras in real life the car would have to be traveling about 30. Also when in big vehicles such as a bus or a lorry the impact of hitting the cars is the same as in a saab or a fiat or a daewoo one thing that i have noticed in hyde park (near where you get the golf buggy) the graphics are absolutely useless on the bushes, i think even snes or mega drive could do better than that. However, this game is not full of critisisms, it has brilliant graphics on the cars and on the roads and the attention to detail on the layout of london is brilliant too, you could get a london cabbie, tell him a street and he could take you there on the game the cars are brilliant showing realism to damage when you crash. another realistic thing is the way that you can burst the tyres on cars (not on the golf buggy) although the tyres wouldnt just dissapear if your car went on fire I think that this game could have been made better by putting a radar or a map on the bottom of the screen (like gta3 and vice city) so you wouldnt have to keep looking at the map that comes with the game to figure out were you are going. the cars real as they are dont have very realistic engine sounds e.g the tvr tuscan sounds nothing like it does in real life
although buses and lorrys do sound like the real thing This game could have done with more missions and made them harder like di mackormack would have made a good series of missions. (although that could be on geataway 2 if the people at soho productions decide to make it) one other bad point: this game can be played where everyone speaks either french german italian or spanish which i think is really stupid because everyone in london would not one day wake up and start speaking french one morning would they. if foreigners want to play this game then i suggest the should start learning this beutiful language that we call english
|
Great game.. with a few small flaws. |
| MothChild from Dallas,TX says (9/May/2003): |
I bought the game recently..and did notice it was alot like GTA..i cant say which one is better.. i think theyre both great, this game is more realistic..but i dunno i think GTA is more fun, even though i myself am burned out on it,i dont like the fact that you yourself cant shoot out the window..even though its a little extreme..i mean so is the storyline so what right?..this is a great game either way very challening..sometimes to the point of hard. i would diffently recommend buying this one.

The Getaway only seems to be best at realsm and movie type!! |
| F.G. from coventry,wst-midlnds,England of Europe says (14/Jul/2004): |
i got this game in a "2 4 £30"(with 007 JB:Agent Underfire)and i lovED it i enjoyed the frst footage(deadly assasination)but its gone boring then my next favorate footage(taxi for mr.chai?)i used to watch alot the others were just fun 2 watch once! hrs my results Graphics:9/10 Sound:8/10 Gmeplay:17/20 overall:8/10 Explanation:i loved this game but it wasn`t stickin to the funner things, every thing was sticking to movie-likeness,special-fxts(effects) and real cars that are very detailed goodly regisstrated(probably spent more time on things like that then putting fun into it,i mean its an 18+/M-ratings not even a adult would have FUN on it)but its still good no high quality Adult- entertainment, everything of london is detailed the cars are ones that actualy exist in Europe the cars are in great detail,my favorate fun step is stealth though and making the ole bill chase me.otherthings/suggestions:i can`t wait for Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas comin out this october im sure that will beat its presant games i`v heard that u can eat less(to bcum weaker)and more(2 bcum fatter) your man is called Carl Johnson he is leftv with his own choice, own responcabilities bcuz his only family, his mother was shot dead and he can do what ever hewants, work 4 gangs, getaway from police-officers,and its about 40x better than Vice City with its improved graphics, more vehicles to steal(ie bicycles more types of moterbike still odd ones from GTA:V.C. and BETTER CARS of corse they will still have ones from GTAIII/VC)an other things u can do in a GTA game.the theres The Getaway 2:Black Monday(i only know its gona be released arond this november, december).and then out already DRIV3R(aka:Driver 3)the 3rd sequal to reflections and Atari`s gamerevolution 1999 award winner the first 3D action driving game, the amazing game,DRIVER 1!!,iv heard that theres disapointmonts about it i but i think i will enjoy it? cya lata hormes!!

The Best Game Ever! |
| Tom from Lake orion, michigan, USA says (15/Aug/2003): |
This game is better than gta: vice city. it has better cars, realistic gun fights, and just all around better game-play. I think this is the best Driving/shooting game ever. Vice city gets boring after a while, sure a lot more guns and cars....but it's not realistic at all...in this the story line is force-fed....no crazy side-trips, no secret guns, just shoooting and driving the whole time.
|
A good game |
| Benjamin from Wellingborough/ England says (22/Jan/2003): |
To be honest I have tried to distance myself from all the hipe surounding the Getaway. As I was afraied that I was going to be as dissapointed as I was when I played MGS2. But, having compleated the game I now feal reddy to review it. Firstly when you start up the Getaway, you will notice three things. One, This is no GTA clone it feals more like a movie. Two, The cutsceans are acomplished, looking extreamly realistic and there is evan spot on lipsink. Three, the swearing is realy bad, its like watching Lock Stock or Pulp Fiction and its relentless you canot play this game when youngsters are about. OK down to playing the game the first level throws you right in it, having to chase down the crims that have killed your wife and kidnapped your son. I have heard many complaintes from people that the lack of in game map is frustraring. But I belive that following the indicators works fine it does take a little time getting used to it though. The shooting sections (and there are alot of them) are fantastic, there is no health bar so you will have to judge how badly wounded he is. Its easaly done when he is screaming "I Carnt take much more of this" and he is strugaling to walk. To rectify this problem simply stand him next to a wall and he will heal. Many if not most of Mark Hammond's missions involve getting from point A to point B and blowing stuff up or shooting lots of theaving gangs. Alough there is one mission when you have to sneek into Jolson's manor and that is great fun and there are other stealth elliments which are enjoyable as well. However, its DC Frank Carter's missions where the game realy throwes of its shackles. Speeding down the road in a police car hearing crime reports blaring in the radio is fantastic. So are the missions when you bust into gangs hideouts and shoot up the place. Overall the graphics are fantastic the story is great and it playes very well. So why not top marks? Well I can clearly see what team soho are trying to do but they dont quite pull it off. The final mission feals rushed and the game does have some glitches, but nothing to realy spoil the experience. However, I expect that the game will sell well. With the amount of money ploughed into the game, and as the ending sugests there is clearly the possibiloty of a sequill and improvement, then maybe we shall see a nine or a ten on the score sheet. I await the possibility with bated breath and in the mean time crack some Yardie/Triad heads.

Grand Theft Auto Killer? |
| John Schwitzer from USA says (30/Jan/2003): |
this game is a great! unlike some people i DO think this game is or can be on the grand theft auto level. this game is more realistic than GTA for instance there are no display or map some people think this is stupid but i think it just ads to the fun and the realisim like when you never are to sure when you sqeeze the trigger you will just hear a CLICK but you should have some kind of idea. and the navagation is going to take some time to get used to but it works a lot than you probily think.and it is real original. another thing that is great is that there are real cars like Nissans and Louts witch are much better that made up cars. in this game unlike GTA VC your protected by the police for instance if you are being chased by gangsters at a high speed then cops will try to kill the gang members insted of only going after you like there are NO gangsters. another great thing that is so realistic is that when you are having a shoot out with gangdters OR the cops you can crouh behind you car and take air not at the enemy but at you enemy's car (the gas tank) and blow them away, that is prety damn cool. and like in GTA you can pop tires on cars that is kinda cool but it can be anoying when that is all the cops do. and when you are under some heavy fire you can grab a ped. and make them your own presonal human body sheild!
the heart of the story line is nothing special, a gang boss and his thugs frame you for killing your wife and kidnapping your son, but that is just the begining, after a few missions the story line gets MUCH more original. the story sometimes gets very complex, at some points and in some parts it will through out some prety good humor. but the storyline i dont think is as good as GTA.
about the sound, the voices i think are pro. actors because they are great but it took a few min to get used to the accents.
the gun sound FX are better that any game i have ever played. one of the best sounding guns is the AK-47 it is better that some movies i have seen! the soundg if the cars are prety good bot something to be improved but donig burnouts sound fu***** cool.
this game is also great in the fact that it takes a LONG time to get board of because it is still so much fun after you haver beat the game, because there is a great free roam mode that allows you to do this. this game (where i got it) was 45$ certinaly NOT a waste of it at all. i strongly reccomend this game!
(as you plobily noticed i refered to GTA Vice City Alot in this review i think they are both GREAT games about equil in quality but, if there was a GTA5 and or Getaway 2 they could both learn a lot from each other)

Damn good, but different from GTA:VC |
| Michael from Minneapolis,Minnesota, USA says (31/Jan/2003): |
I just got The Getaway like a day ago, but already I can tell it is a great game. I'm only on mission 5 I think and the missions get harder subtly...there is no giant difficulty curve, where you go...Sh*t this is hard. The graphics of the game are good, especially compared to the cartoontisic graphics of Grand Theft Auto. This game is very real, down to the cars and streets. If I lived in london, this game would be even better. I mean how cool would it be to drive in your neighbor hood in a game? The profanity...is a bit high, i don't care if they swear, but every other word is f***. Although, some of the british terms, that us americans don't get are pretty funny. All in all this game is great, well worth sohos time and money. One flaw I see, is just how mark controls, a bit sluggish, but still a great game
|
Great Game |
| mark from New Zealand says (3/Feb/2003): |
the Getaway is good Very good and is Great Game play. But it suffers With no motorbikes or Boats like In Vice City. Hope they make a Getaway 2 and improve more on it As in motorbikes Boats and so on but all in all its a good game
well done.

AWESOME!!!!!!!! |
| Ralphie from Pennsylvania, USA says (14/Feb/2003): |
When i got home i put the game in and boom i was blown away at the beginning cut scene. The graphics made GTA Vice City's look like a Disney Movie. Then i played the first level and felt like throwing the controller out of the window. This game is horrible i thought...until i found out how to heal. Not only does this game have great action, but a killer storyline. There were no health bars, which made the game feel more like real life. The only thing that i didn't like was the ending for DC Carter. But all in all its awesome! You have to buy this Game!

Only 4 Weapons! |
| A Guy that lives 3 Doors from BRETT FAVRE from Green Bay, WI says (15/Feb/2003): |
Okay maybe there is 5 weapons, but c'on! Driving was frustrating. You hit a stop sign and your car slams to a stop like you hit a building... must be made from titanium. Streets will "drive" you nuts. But I've been to London and that's really how it is. The cops are NOT that brillent however. You would think that switching cars, the police wouldn't know what you're driving. The AI is too pumped up. Beat the game in 8 days which is another dissapointment... too short. And the free roam should be in availible in the beginning. For $40.00, buy it.. for $50, I'd have to think twice. Better than GTA:VC? I'd say no. I like picking the fights with whomever, exploring things you just want to explore. They were going for realism in this game.. Yes they got it, but it could have been better. Like the Map- where is it?! The blinker thing would have been fine in the US where the streets are "normal." You can over-shoot your target by a mile and a half. Okay, stop reading, and go play!

A nominee Game for the year 2003. |
| Sean Stiles from Clatskanie, Oregon says (16/Feb/2003): |
Brings people a terrific thematic sequence as well to life. The game it self has proven it was better than Max Payne and Grand Theft Auto III. But It wasn't as great as GTA Vice City. Which is okay. Any way they still had all of the Blood, Drug refferences, Strong Language, strong sexual content, and of course the violence. You were able to jack cars and even had some professional actors. This game to me is the most enuthastic game of them all. Come on who wouldn't want to play this game? The reason why I like it so much because the game it self was set in London, England. IN course of which it was all ways one of the facinating places that I would ever want to go visit. The game did a good job of the recreation of London. So take it from me you have 2 great people Mark Hammond and Frank Carter, two men that hate the same punk ass Charlie. "Fear is all in the minds if your a criminal." So I suggest that you all go out and Buy this game or you will be missing out on the best game ever made in the year of 2003. I hope that all of you have it in you to give this game a chance to win an award just like MGS2 Sons Of Liberty did back in 2001. (It also may be best if you rent the game before you purchase it for your self just to see what I am telling you gamers out there).
