The Getaway should top the charts!!! |
| Daniel Reese from Liverpool, England says (4/Apr/2003): |
The Getaway mixes a realistic story line with brilliant graphics. I bought the game a little later than I wanted to so I had time to hear my friends thoughts. To be honest they were not good, one of my mates bought it and decided to get it changed when another just hated it when he rented it and never bought. The Getaway is the most brilliant game I have ever played, the cars are amazingly realistic and another thing that caught my eye was the bill-boards, they are so brilliant they look like they have been pre-recorded and you're a film. I think that all the criticism The Getaway has been getting is unfair and it is brilliant

this game is well crafted... |
| sean garcia from merced, ca says (3/Apr/2003): |
hey nono your a fool, this game slaps gta in the arse! this is like being inside a movie and your mark hammond. as for being realistic, come on its a game. gta 3 is realistic, huh? give this game its props, that it deserves. people, get this game, you will not be let down. easily the best game of the year.
|
Brits are out of their wits! |
| nono from chihuahua, mexico says (2/Apr/2003): |
Sorry the getaway is not better than GTA. You guys are just happy that there's finally a decent brit game, but that is al it is...decent. You brits are patheticly stupid. While the realism is very nice you have to admit it is still very fake. you can't recover from a gunshot wound by leaning on a wall. if you want realistic, they should make mark go to the hospital to be treated every single time he's hurt. GTA is less real but just as fun.

The Getaway game of the year |
| Daniel N from Guayaquil, Ecuador says (2/Apr/2003): |
i think the getaway is the most exiting game ever made because you can do almost the same things that you can do on GTA:VC and in a real city like london and with real cars, the game is pretty real i must say that the guys from soho just got a #1 game. in my opinion is a GranTurismo turned evil jejeje
|
no no no |
| scotty from london (home of the getaway) England says (1/Apr/2003): |
first of all the getaway does not set out to compete with gta vc. it is a completey unique title and the 2 of them should not even be compared to do either justice, lets face it, gta is boring and lacks realism thats why i had to refund it, on the other hand the getaway potrays a life-like environment with life-like missions that gets your adrenalin pumping, not to mention the swearing that gets u aggravated. UK-10 AMERICA-0, keep trying is all i can say.
|
the game sucked. |
| Benjamin from Boston, Massachusetts, USA says (28/Mar/2003): |
i say it sucked because it was like everyother interactive game that has come out in the last three or four years. i honestly felt like it was just another mission to any free roam game such as the overly rated GTA or medal of honor. all of these games ultimately emulate each other and im sure im not the only finding boredom in the repetitive theme of these games. freak lone gamers try and rationalize in some way that either of these games are better than the other but the only differences is the plot. so the getaway takes away fictional excitement by extracting fantasy weapons that only the government controls. i give the getaway props on that they did not allow gamers to use these type of pseudo weaponary, but it does not at all mean that the game is better because it had a small quintessence of reality. all these companies are creating games based around present time or future life and put the gamer in the middle of some persons dilemma. if companies try to push this idea further i suggest they try something with the midwestern lifestyle and deputy sheriffs. who knows maybe it could be fun?

The Getaway Best Game Yet!! |
| Dale from Newcastle England says (27/Mar/2003): |
The Getaway is the greatest game from the Soho team yet there graphics are realistic and the cars are real to ranging from police cars to Bt vans to TVR Cerbera's, the Soho team has put alot of work into this game and it is undoubtably the best game for the PS2 yet.GTA:3 and GTA:Vice City are bouned to be knocked down from the number 1 games in the world, the getaway has everything a game should have, real cars, gangs, police!!
Everyone thinks its a hard game but i think its quite simple, all you have to do is get used to the controls and get the hang of it (which i did in the first level) and then your away riding around in your nicked cars and shooting up gangs!!!
The game consist's of 2 parts the first part up to level 11 with Mark Hammond and the second part up to level 22 with DC Carter, so you have a chance to be the villan and the police!
It all starts with Mark Hammond when the villians try and kidnap your wife and child, after your wife has pulled a struggle and tells ur son to do a runner she gets shot dead and ur son gets caught, so you go on a spree to get ur son back but Charlie (the big boss) has other things on his mind, he wants you to run errands for him before you can have your son back, then when you have done all the errands for him he tells you he didnt even think of giving you your son back!! So you go and rescue him off the boat, then after you have done that you have to do the other part of the game with DC Carter which is mainly the same thing but he's just after Charlie!!
|
After playing this game the first night I fell in love with it. |
| Sam Babin from USA says (23/Mar/2003): |
The first night I bought this game I must have staied up all night playing the game. At first I had to get used to the different controles [GTA:VC], BUT AFTER I understood it verv well. The only dislike I had was the levels, guns,&the how hard the game was. Sense i beat the game in five days i was kinda angry. But i really loved this game so i gave it a nine.
|
The Getaway is way better then GTA, but I would rather have GTA then The Getaway!! |
| Nicholas Angel from Courtenay, Canada says (23/Mar/2003): |
The reason I think that The Getaway is way better then GTA is because you can be a bad guy abd be a cop. In GTA, to be a cop, you have to earn a cop uniform, and even then, you're not really a cop, you're just pretendeing to be. I give The Getaway 10 stars. Way to go to the people who made The Getaway.

I jus blagged me a lotus, il av u cougthin up claret my son!!!! |
| Darren Rickman from Hampshire, England says (20/Mar/2003): |
This has to be one of my favourates i must say it brings the $#< remove me > at !ney out!! After playin the game and taking a trip to london on the weekend i didnt get all that lost round the west end as half of the directions on foot i remember from the game, without havin to check out any signs. Theres alot of british talent in this game, Team Soho have done a very good job most of the gameplay is floorless yet more woepons would of made it play longer on the free roam mode. Car damage is good too along with physics and handling and yes cars can be rolled onto roofs it just takes skill, speed and the buckingham palace fountain head on!! The voice talent and storyline is a typical $#< remove me > at !ney gangbang thriller with a kool plot. Not only that but its a virtual torist map of london as well as a gangster fest kick ass!!
Team soho are apparently producing a prequal before hamond left the collins gang so u play the past finding out more about mark hammond......

Avoid That Midday Traffic |
| Tom Smith from Greenwich, London, UK says (17/Mar/2003): |
I'm a firm believer that GTA Vice City has to one of the best games out...that was until i played 'The Getaway.' Obviously coming form London myself i can understand the way these poor characters have evolved...blah, if it drives steal it, get a better car, ram, shoot, maim ofter gangs and police. Why not get every good game that has come out in the last five years and roll them into one, and they have Getaway is the adreniline pumping driving/shooting game that i have waited for and thank god its not set in some cr*p make believe American island...Hoorah for GETAWAY
|
good, but no contender for GTA |
| A gamer from Wisconsin, USA says (17/Mar/2003): |
Awesome grapihcs. I wish GTA would have those graphics with their game. You have no freedom, no saving cars, no cheats and no hookers. Whenever you get fustrated in GTA you can always just go blow $#< remove me > at ! up and do fun stuff. In this game, you don't have the choice to do different missions and it gets quite annoying. As far as the reality factor of this game, i agree with most of the other people that it is amazingly life-like. But sometimes, it goes too far. These are video games and they are suppose to be fun even if they have to be a little ficticious while doing it. GTA does a great job determining which factors have to be as real as possible and which factors they can stretch to make the game even more exciting and interesting. Overall, I was disappointed with the level of fun I had playing this game. It was in no way comparable to GTA. The realness was unbelievable, but again, i think they went too far. I can't wait to see the improvements on the second generation games.

Exelent graphics but lacks in realism |
| Adam Cleland from eastbourne, england says (13/Mar/2003): |
The getaway has got brilliant graphics and good attention to detail but it is not very realistic e.g when a car hits you at about 5 miles per hour it kills you wheras in real life the car would have to be traveling about 30. Also when in big vehicles such as a bus or a lorry the impact of hitting the cars is the same as in a saab or a fiat or a daewoo one thing that i have noticed in hyde park (near where you get the golf buggy) the graphics are absolutely useless on the bushes, i think even snes or mega drive could do better than that. However, this game is not full of critisisms, it has brilliant graphics on the cars and on the roads and the attention to detail on the layout of london is brilliant too, you could get a london cabbie, tell him a street and he could take you there on the game the cars are brilliant showing realism to damage when you crash. another realistic thing is the way that you can burst the tyres on cars (not on the golf buggy) although the tyres wouldnt just dissapear if your car went on fire I think that this game could have been made better by putting a radar or a map on the bottom of the screen (like gta3 and vice city) so you wouldnt have to keep looking at the map that comes with the game to figure out were you are going. the cars real as they are dont have very realistic engine sounds e.g the tvr tuscan sounds nothing like it does in real life
although buses and lorrys do sound like the real thing This game could have done with more missions and made them harder like di mackormack would have made a good series of missions. (although that could be on geataway 2 if the people at soho productions decide to make it) one other bad point: this game can be played where everyone speaks either french german italian or spanish which i think is really stupid because everyone in london would not one day wake up and start speaking french one morning would they. if foreigners want to play this game then i suggest the should start learning this beutiful language that we call english

Could have been a contender |
| Mark Daly from Based in the UK at present says (9/Mar/2003): |
The Getaway will obvisously be compared to GTA 3 and vice city due to its similar nature and content. And this game could have contended with the GTA series if not for some shoddy game play planning. GOOD POINTS - The graphics are massivly impressive as is the attention to detail in recreating London if you can`t actually pay a visit to London than this is the next best thing! the cars are real and react more realistically when crashed into or shot at than the Cars in either GTA game even things like fire are more impressive and real looking than in the GTA games. So its a real shame that the makers didn`t pay the same attention to making a playable and enjoyable game as they did to making the game realistic looking. For a start when driving there is no way of looking left and right when exiting from a side street as there is in similar games such a GTA and Midtown madness this often means that even if your driving slowly and carefully you end up having some other vechile side swipe you. Then there are the missions were you have to follow someone such as when you are required to follow crooked cop Macormack often the vechiles that you are supposed to follow are so far in the distance even at the start of the mission that you are only likely to spot them by pure accident. Though the arrow above a suspect vecile used in other games of a similar type maybe less realistic and doesn`t look as movie like as the Getaway they certainly simplify things and prevent hours of frustration created by trying to figure out exactly what car it is you are supposed to be following and often trailing the wrong auto. And again though the flashing indictor system employed as a direction finder looks better than the maps of GTA they simply don`t work. For a start the indicators don`t even flash when you come out of a side street were forward isn`t an option but left or right is and also you often only have to swerve slightly and the indicators will flash that you have to turn only for them to go out again when you take the center of the road. Buildings clubs and houses that you could actually enter and live in were one of the great improvments made in vice city and although this game has interior enviroment`s they can`t be entered either before or after missions have been completed. A lot of the games pre release popularity is based on the misconception that the getaway is some kind of vice city in London. But although the theme and content maybe similar to GTA car chases shootings and so on. The way the game prgresses is more similar to Tomb Raider and other level based games than it is to GTA. One of the great things about GTA 3 and Vice city is if you tried one mission and were finding that too hard then you could go try another mission or simply drive around to calm your nerves. IN this game there is no choice in the order you do any of the missions. There are also far to many time limit missions and these are even harder and more frustrating in a game were it is often hard to even tell what direction you are supposed to turn in or what auto you are meant to follow. Also there are far to many gangsters and cops giving you a hard time and preventing you from having a drive around and sight see. The truth is this game is the Anna Kornikova of the game world its great lookong but just can`t get close to competing against its rivals. Another big plus with the GTA games is the cheat that allows you to change the character skin (though the makers of GTA shouldn`t be applauded for this option since they never intended you too have it) and you would have thought that at least in the free roam mode that you win on completion of the getaway they could have allowed you to use the other characters from the game and also to enter the buildings used in the missions the art gallery for a start was a great looking place that even had some interesting art and some comic conversation that you often don`t get time to listen to during a mission, And in certain cases the realisim goes way to far and isn`t that realistic since getting hit by a car while on foot kills the character dead most times even when the vechile that hits him is moving at a relativly slow pace (something that wouldn`t even happen in real life) One of the games bonuses is also its deficiet since unlike GTA there is no option to save your favorite cars as there is in GTA and the cars in the getaway are real so players may well have a favorite. The game looks great and is virtually the real London but is spoiled by too difficult to get instantly to grips with gameplay. If you have the patience for level based games with no avaiable cheats to get the goodies than this game could well be worth the cash out lay. But if you are getting it hoping for vice city set in London then give this a miss since it lacks the playabilty freedom and low frustration factors of GTA vice city and also lacks the fun and enjoyable cheats avalaible for that game!

The Getaway is worth every dime |
| ryan from Conifer Colorado America says (6/Mar/2003): |
The reason i say the getaway is worth every dime is well because it is i mean it 40 dollars brand new , plus look at it this way its a great game it's like a mix between metal gear solid, max payne, and grand theft auto. I would have given a better score but it was lacking weapons, you can get a single pistol, duel pistols, and ak47 and a shotgun and thats all. but the story plot is amazing its like playing a movie with great graphics,(you can play from two ends a ex-mobster, basically a bad guy gone good and a vigilante cop in other words a good guy gone bad the stories connect well with one another. ) and the fun continues after you beat the game with the free roam mode where you can find hidden cars and fight cops and mobsters. i would say go ahead and buy it, it also had one other fault it ends, the games lasted about 8 hours for me (not counting the free roam mode) which is an ok amount of time but you fill kind of empty afterwards like you dont want it to end hopefull they are making a sequel.

Pretty good game |
| Brian Brooks from Lyman, Maine USA says (5/Mar/2003): |
The Getaway is an o.k. game. The graphics are good. The fact that there are real cars is awsome. However, the city is just too darn crowded. There's no place to really open up any of the cars in the game (from what I've seen so far). Also, you can't look left, right, or behind you. You won't know what the cops next move will be until he's alongside you. And by then it's too late. Drive by shootings? Forget 'em. Not in this game. I don't care for the fact that there are no gauges, meters, maps, or anything like that. You don't know where you are in the city. You have to look at your character to see what kind of shape he's in. There's no speedo, so you don't know how fast your going. The controls are a bit weird and take some getting used to. Overall, GTA is better in my opinion. The Getaway forces you to complete all the missions in a certain order. No other driving game has the freedom of the GTA series. I wish GTA VC and the getaway both had a film director like in Driver 1 and 2 so you could look at a chase scene from every conceivable angle. The Getaway doesn't have any replay option, never mind a film director. So I give this game a 7 because it didn't live up to my expectations. But it's good enought to say I'm still happy with the purchase of this game.

for all the kids |
| bryan from des moines iowa united states says (5/Mar/2003): |
i thought this game is a winner and for whoever doesnt like it WHY? its very realistic better cars by far then GTA or any other game after playing the game you get hooked the story line is good and the missions are funner then GTA and its a better challenge and for all the people that dont know you can get free roam mode with out the hassel of beating the game so before the FMV sequence that plays before the main menu appears press triangle(3), left, square, triangle(3), left, circle then you'll hear a women groaning to confirm the code then you can go to the special features menu and play in free roam mode

Shades if Hitman-1...but still very good |
| Jeff from San Diego, CA USA says (4/Mar/2003): |
First, comparing GTA to The Getaway is absurd. So I won't do it.
The Setting:
The Getaway is a very linear plot-based game set in current day London.
The Cars:
Euro cars dominate, but there are plenty of American and Asian models that aren't marketed in the U.S., so that's also realistic and cool. They handle realistically too.
The Plot:
(Don't worry, no major spoilers) The plot reminds me of the first Hitman game for PC. The Getwaway is also very linear and storywise occasionally feels forced because you proceed from mission to mission. There are also those odd holes in the plot itself, -you know the kind, like when you could easily just kill the main badguy early on instead of listening to his plans for you. Why? Because ultimately (and we all know this) he will betray you later anyway. Also, there are times when you could easily kill his main henchmen and simply attribute it to an 'unfortunate loss' during a mission. Having been a mob guy why wouldn't you do that? For an ex-member of a crime syndicate this guy seems fairly ignorant of how things work.
I also agree with the other reviewers who mentioned the mistake of not putting forth the info regarding healing. I would add this also: The 'free roam' mode should simply exist all of the time. Afterall, we are talking about a heavily plot driven game here.
I'd give this game a point-higher rating if it weren't for those cliche'd plot devices.
A strong 7/10
Buy it at a Target store for less.

Why The Getaway is better than GTA. |
| Spike Lee from Norway says (3/Mar/2003): |
First of all. When I bought TG, I really thought it was a lame game. But a friend of mine recommended it so I bought it. I do not regret it. Now. Comparing TG to GTA is like comparing pizza to pancakes. You like them both or just one of them. But they are not same type of food. TG and GTA are not the same type of game. GTA is and will always be an arcade game. Based on points or money the object is to have a lot of them. TG is more of an simulation or maybe a movie game, where the object is to make it through the game.
"Duh! You can steal cars in both games."
So what!?!?! You can also fly a helicopter in GTA. Does that mean it is a helicopter sim? Maybe you can compare it to Microsoft Flight Simulator?
So why is TG better than GTA.
Simple: TG amuses the player by involving him/her to push the story on. You are then rewarded by nice cutscenes before you continue. The story is original and you feel a part of the game.
GTA on the other hand amuses the player by having freedom. Think of it. By having all that freedom, you are served a $#< remove me > at !ty story and missions that you HAVE to complete or you dont get that extra car,gun or building. The GTA missions would be completed in half hour if it werent for all that driving around you do in between missions.
But still. Both games are really fun, but they are not comparable.

very cool |
| nick from indiana says (3/Mar/2003): |
awesome game... more realistic then games like gta... you die quicker.. challenging but more realistic... its worth it... so far i don't think you can pick up health or anything.. also more realistic... so you die and thats it!! pretty sweet... rather then picking up stray ammo on the streets you actually have to kill to get it... i hate it when i die because it happens so quick and so easily but its much more realistic and better...
