The Getaway-Most Realistic Game EVER |
| Stevo from Stockton, England says (2/Mar/2003): |
I think that the Getaway is by far the most realistic game I have ever played and probably the most realistic game for the ps2. So maybe it does have it's faults. Too much swearing-there is in LONDON. No life meter-there isn't one in REAL LIFE. No ammo meter- not in REAL LIFE. Also if you look closely you do have a life meter-blood. The more blood you have on your suit the closer you are to dying. First left arm then legs then the spot on your back gets progressivly bigger. The driving is spot on. They are real cars-which handle like the real thing and if you get knocked over you die-like in real life. Yes there are some problems with the game like when you sneak round a corner you have to wait about two second before you can fire, which usually means that you die- REALISM I love it. The one major problem for me is that the police carry guns-they shouldn't. So maybe it makes the game a bit more challenging but in england the police do not carry guns. The sound quality is superb. Okay the graphics could do with a touch up ,but thats only a minor point for me. I think that all you americans who have never been to London should get a grip and come visit our glourious, green, heavenly lands of dear little England. REALISM-I LOVE IT.

Fun Game But Has Its Faults |
| visions from St. Petersburg, FL says (2/Mar/2003): |
Ok, let me start by saying I did anticipate this game, being a huge GTA fan and looking for a game that would be comparable to the GTA series. A few points that I really liked about this game right off the bat were: Great graphics, change of scenery (London), cool cars, the realism (no map, no ammo or health meter, etc.), good storyline. The bad points were: at times the streets were hard to drive on because of too many people, cars, or just plain $#< remove me > at ! all over the place like signs and gates, when the cops start to chase you they can be too much and seem to swarm on you at times not to mention the gangs chasing you at the same time, needed more weapon selection, I'm not lazy but an auto-aim option would make shootouts a little more enjoyable, and last but certainly not least, why isn't there an option to skip through the damned cutscenes???? Well, despite all those flaws, I did like the game, killer graphics, but call me crazy I still like Vice City better. Hopefully Rockstar will make the next GTA with graphics like The Getaway, that would kick ass. Anyways, thats my view on the subject.

Oh yeah baby! |
| Nick Ballard from Leicestershire, England says (28/Feb/2003): |
This game is superb! Every bad review I've read about this game complains about 1) the navigation system 2) leaning against a wall to heal 3) long fmv sequences 4) crap cars. The fmv sequences I agree with, they're great the first time but it would be good if you could skip them in the future. The navigation system is absolutely fine, people who can't follow simple indications must be incompetant! Health - Why not lean against a wall to heal. Lets face it every other game you can get shot to bits and simply walk over a health pack to get better, there has to be some way to regain your health, so all credit for an innovative idea. And finally the cars, THIS IS LONDON not HOLLYWOOD! The cars are all cars that you would and do find on the streets of London, yes some of them are slow but at least they are all real cars plus it adds to the excitment when you finally jack a car with a bit of oomph!
Roll on the Getaway 2!

Too much hype! |
| Mike from Syracuse, NY, USA says (27/Feb/2003): |
In no way does the Getaway compare to GTA!!! I mean come on now people. The best thing about this game is the cars. The worst thing is driving them. The controls are not on point and (unlike GTA) you have no idea where to go except for you signal lights. I have never been to London so excuse me if i do not know my way around. I am just happy this game did not cost full price.

Getaway Gets you Away |
| Spider from Toronto, Canada says (27/Feb/2003): |
I was surprised to find the game had so much foul language, this however makes it so realistic and excieting to play.
I have played Grand Theft Auto and Found that game to be a lot of fun, Getaway provides a different take on the GTA still play with alternate vehicles and scenery.
I have had much fun with this game so far, but must admit the car controls could have been a little bit better.
Overall, Lots of fun on the Run.

Wow - London is Just as I Remember! |
| Lise from Minneapolis, USA says (27/Feb/2003): |
This game is fantastic. Once I heard it was coming out I was really excited at the thought of being able to drive around London. I am a Brit ex-pat who has lived in America for nearly one year and misses London in a big way, so to drive around Soho, Covent Garden and up Park Lane was great!
The only criticism that I have is that the game needs to save a little more often, I've lost count of the times I tried to make the drive to Sol Vita only to get killed or caught by gangster or the cops, it does become a little frustrating. Also Yasmin leaves a lot to be desired she will keep on getting killed by stray bullets when she could just get into the car and go!
However, on the whole this an amazing game and worth the cash - can't wait for the free driving around London, I want to see how far you can go - up the M1 perhaps? Down towards Hampton Court or Kew Gardens? I suppose I'll just have to keep trying.

The Getaway: An OK game |
| ironcross483 from Evergreen, USA says (25/Feb/2003): |
The Getaway is a pretty cool game to begin with, but it has it's problems. Not only does it have a TON of swearing, but it also has reallly long movies that you can't skip. It is just way to hard, it just drops you into the game and you have really no clue what to do. Unless you have read the maunual you wouldn't know to follow the way your turn signals blink. It is also cheap how you come out from hiding against a wall and they shoot you before you can even draw your gun. I think this game could have used maybe some type of Heads Up Display of any sort, like a map, or ammo. I have to admit the driving is pretty neat and the fact that is has real cars is pretty cool. The graphics are fairly good but they could use some touch up work. I also dislike the fact that you have to beat the entire game, just to free drive, and that is just isn't available from the start. So if you are thinking of getting this game, be sure you are willing to put A LOT of time and effort in to it before you waste the money. In the end I would have to say that this game is way to difficult for all the wrong reasons, and should have at least had the option to change the difficulty from the start.

Please...... Getaway!! |
| Thomas J from Detroit MI says (24/Feb/2003): |
This game is not all that it was hyped up to be. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it. I saw the commercials and got excited, until I played it. Don't get me wrong, it's not the worst game to come out, but it's a far cry from the best that video game programmers can make. First of all, there was no life meter. You have no clue when you're gonna die until, "Boom!", game over. You can't change the driving view, or even look behind you while driving. I don't know about anybody else, but when I play a game like this, the shooting and stuff is ok, but the driving gets me hooked. I liked the fact that they had real cars, but the feel of the driving was off. It just did not leave me convinced. I would have liked it more if there was more emphasis on the game play and graphics, instead of getting every little detail down on the streets of London. I've never been there, and neither have at least 99% of Americans who have played this game. So how am I supposed to appreciate the time and effort put into it? With less than average game play and a lot of cursing? Big deal. A couple swear words do not make a game good, let alone great. I've seen and heard a whole lot of comparison to Vice City, which in my opinion is the beat game out to date. The Getaway does not even compare. I will admit the idea is somewhat original, although not very interesting. After playing this, I would much rather stick to something like Vice City, or Hitman 2. Where at least you have SOME control as to what's going on around you. And who's gonna figure out how to lean against the wall to heal? If it was that easy, I'd be out doing dirt constantly. Hopefully if they decide to make The Getaway 2, they'll get their minds out of the gutter and pass the butter.

realism taken to the next level along with sluggish controls and a taken plot |
| john from Maine, usa says (24/Feb/2003): |
this game is what i imagined video games will be like in the future. a city (london) completely drawn out interactively to the last detail. this is a real advancement in gaming. the game itself is fun, but at times annoying. there is too many untied knots and not enough control. yes it may be the most realistic game out there, but maybe it has forgotten the point of gaming. entertainment in a non real setting. don't let a bobby cop arrest us at the end of a 20 min mission and make us start all over again. the margin for error is too great.

the getaway should stay away ! |
| torsten fenslau from sydney says (23/Feb/2003): |
after all the hype and controversy about this title i was more than a little disappointed...now, some might say this game is more realistic than gta vice city, hello ? ...its a video game, if u wanted realistic then why dont you walk outside and start stealing cars and shooting people , thats realistic !
anyway, whats the deal with leaning against the wall ?
i dont think thats very factual, and who cares if the streets of london are accurately modeled, how would you know unless you lived there ?
i dont know about you but i'm not impressed by a lot of f words in a game i would rather see some decent weapons !
and how come you cant shoot when you are driving ?
i do appreciate a lot of effort and money has gone into this game but i feel its been directeed into the wrong area's !

The most realistic game out there today! |
| A gamer from Arizona, USA says (23/Feb/2003): |
This is one of the best games I own. By far the most realistic. From the damage on the cars to the way the character reacts to getting shot. Takes place in London and is the story of a man trying to get his son back. Far better than Max Payne, but could learn alittle from the last two Grand Theft Autos. Would be nice to run around whenever you wanted to, instead of having to wait to complete the story missions. Very real, very fun, very difficult. It is well worth the money and will not disappoint. Great Game!!!
|
its brilliant but i think it costs too much |
| Ashley A from united kingdom yorkshire leeds says (22/Feb/2003): |
this is a brilliant game but i think it costs too much coz over here in England it costs £39.99 and you cant take a ride at the begging you have to do all the standard missions to get free roam around london and its pretty bloody hard when you have to gate crash that art museum and then they chase you to where you have to meet charlie jhonson for a drink and when the cops are chasing you cant look back at them to see where they are and when eyebrows is in the car with you where the hell do you go.
|
an interesting experience... |
| steve from jacksonville, fl USA says (20/Feb/2003): |
first of all the graphics for this game are amazing. this is one of the best looking games for any system right now. the setting and idea were cool but there were flaws in the game. the controls could have been way better and the camera angles can be confusing at times. the characters move at a sluggish pace, which most people will find annoying. the story was ho-hum. i've seen better story lines in an episode of salute your shorts. the free roam option you unlock is completely pointless. you have absolutely no idea where to go plus you've still got cops and gang members chasing you down. the missions during the regular game could have been improved also. they were way to unforgiving for making minor mistakes. overall the game looked awesome but the controls were barely average. still, if you're into these kinds of games you should check it out...but rent before you buy.

Getaway: Real Life Situations. |
| Dennis from Buffalo, ny, USA says (20/Feb/2003): |
The Getaway is awsome. Ive noticed many people compare this game to Grand Theft Auto and say it is no where close to it. But this game has something that GTA doesnt have, REALNESS. Dont get me wrong, GTA is one of the best games I have played, but its just a shame to here people rib on Getaway. The cars in The Getaway are off tha hook and graphics much clearer than GTA. Also, this game is like real life. Your not gunna be walkin the streets with 20 different weapons on you (example..GTA vice mini gun)Another example would be the infinite run in GTA. Its cool but not real. your not gunna run forever in real life carrying odd numbers of weapons. I think people just got them selves to excited when this games reviews came out. "Oh no a GTA in london"
So before any of you say this game sux or just got dissapointed because its nothing like GTA, play it, the story is awesome and you play both the hitman and the cop. I rate this game 9 out of 10 for an outstanding display of real life.
|
Its alright but coulda been better!!!!! |
| Nick from Usa says (20/Feb/2003): |
I like the game and all dont get me wrong, but it could've been like vice city and let you go u stores, but they really just wanted a realistic enviroment and AI setup. More weapons would've been nice and there also could of be stronger cars because you can ram in to a light post and get the black steam. Also they could have started you out with a nicer car on the first level, For example they only start you out with a slow green car. I really should make a good comment about this game. I think the part where you can hold the people hostage and when the cops come you can get them to put their hands in the air, its also good if while you are holding the hostage you can shoot other things and people too. I usually injure the cops, get them to drop their gun and then kill the hostage, after that I go take the cop hostage, It really helps. I would have to give it a 4.

Getaway not GTA |
| John Johnsen from New York says (19/Feb/2003): |
Please stop comparing this game to GTA. Just look at it from its own factors. GTA is one of the best, if not the best, games I'v played. So ofcourse The Getaway will look bad compared to it. If you just look at it alone, Getaway is a great, fun game. The controls are fine, but the camera views are a different story. It would have help if you could just look back while driving. The cars are awsome, and the cop cars ARE SOPOSE TO BE FAST, if they arnt fast, how could they catch up to criminals with civics and skylines? And the speed of the charecter is obviously slower than anything Iv ever seen. Walking around the city will be a pain in the ass. One thing I really didnt like is all the glitches. I have seen so many I cant even count them all. A little more effort should have gone into fixing them. Besides all the little things the only problems are views, speed and glitches. Overall this game kicks ass.

Has rockstar finally met thier match |
| Michael Mills from Lebanon Junction Kentucky USA says (18/Feb/2003): |
First of all I would like to say this is one of the best games I have ever played for ps2.I mean the graphics are amazingly brilliant. I had GTA Vice city for about 2 months, and it sucks. It had so many glitches it was'nt funny. Yeah stealing a helicopter was pretty funny. But what was the point.or screwing prositutes and beat the crap out of them after. Also I think that not having a health bar is awesome it gives you more of a challenge and the guns are awesome. I mean if you were a fugitive on the run would you have a variety of guns to choose frome. Hell no! except beating the piss out of somebody. And the realism of driving a car is awesome except those faggott police guys. And the girl police officers are pretty rough. But I think that's pretty hot. So any way I suggest that you rent the before purchasing because when I first got it I kicked my ps2 acrossed the room. And again the graphics were awesome, the story line was hot, and the cars were bad.plus i think the game was well worth the price $39.99.And then paying $49.99 for GTA Vice City. But any way I think you guys should becareful while playing a game like this, remember it's just a game so don't get mad and pull a Tommy Vercetti. p.s. stop complaining about the damn game if you did'nt like you should'nt have bought it

This game has the potential to be far better that any of the GTA's. |
| Joe from New York, USA says (18/Feb/2003): |
I'm sorry, but the one thing that makes this game just fail miserably in my book is the controls. Not to mention the fact that it is a total rip off of both GTA's. The cars in the getaway are simply badass, but you can barely see them! With cars like the hardtop convertable Lexus and the new Range Rover, one should be able to admire these beautiful machines from various angles like in the GTA's. But anyway, to the real point, the thing that in my opinion makes this game far inferior than GTA 3 or Vice City is defenitley the difficulty to simply get around on foot, and when you're being shot at by anyone it is way to hard to aim, fire, fire again, then aim again, move to another location and so on. Not to mention this game is impossible without cheats. But then again who plays GTA 3 or Vice City cheat free? In general this game could have easily surpassed both the GTA's if they just spent a little more time on the basics.

| Greg from Boston, MA, USA says (17/Feb/2003): |
Everyones entitled to they're own opinion.... but I dont understand why you people keep saying The Getaway is better than GTA3, sure the Getaway is realistic but damn, are we forgetting that its a game and is ok if you have alittle things to at least guide you through the missions... cuz it truly cant be realistic because of the fact that we're not Mark Hammond and dont know what he knows or know our way around the city so a map wouldnt hurt... as far as the healing... yea its cool... but after a while it gets annoying especially when someone comes shooting you with a shotgun from behind right after you finished healing and you either die or have to heal all over again... anotherthing is the view... everyone is complaining about that so I dont think its neccessary for me to put my input on that, both in the car and on foot. And what the hell is up with how slow he is especially going up or down stairs... I think there should have been a run button since there were plenty of buttons not used... my grandmother moves faster than him. The story line is great and I love the way they talk the graphics are good, dont like the handling of the cars though, I feel like Im drunk or something when Im trying to drive. Wish I could change the controls too, I hate having to move him with the joystick would be better to use the D pad. I also dont like how the cops cars are super fast and catch you like your going in reverse. Overall I give this game a 6 because there is alot improvements needed to keep players from smashing they're PS2's on the floor. It may be more realistic than GTA3 but GTA3 is more fun to play, I think. I think this game is more worth renting than buying. Its good but could be better.

This is one of the best games ive played |
| Dusty from North Dakota, USA says (17/Feb/2003): |
The getaway is a really fun game i dont know why everyone tries to compare it to gta vice city the only thing the same about the getaway and vice city is that you can be in a car and out of a car. Its not as good as vice city but its pretty close in its own ways. the graphics in this game rock probably the best ive seen for ps2. music is alrigh its sortof weird but i dont care about the music anyway. I think the controlls are good i dont know whats wrong with all you people that dont like them cuz it only takes about 1 minute to figure them out. the views are just fine if u ask me. this game is just compared to vice city too much if people would look at it as its own kind of game it would be just fine but you guys can think what you want.
