All the hype, the game still falls short of expectation16564

Dick Pole from New England, USA says (29/Jan/2003):
After years of development and tons of money, the game still has some major flaws, which could be easily corrected in sequels if they decide to come out w/ one. Let me state the good things first: 1)the graphics & level of detail is unreal; 2)the gameplay is extremely realistic, like the ability to take hostages, duck behind objects, lean against the wall, fire two guns at once, shoot out car windows, etc... Here are the bad: 1)the game is almost too realistic, for people never been to London, an in game map would be nice. Even if you had a map of London, how the heck would you know where you are? There's no street signs or anything; 2)beside the missions and locating hidden cars, there's really not that much to do. There's no cop missions, street races, insane jumps, and so on. For a game with an area as large as the getaway, it's a shame that the only thing you can do is drive around hopelessly after finishing the missions. Obviously not every game should be modeled after GTA, otherwise there'd be no identity/originality to it. Maybe the developers are teasing us, giving us a little at time so we would always want more.

Er?16609

Sean from Cedar City, Utah says (29/Jan/2003):
'twas a fun game. love the realism(no radar, police meter, ammo or health gauges, licensed cars[SKYLINE WOO!], realistic city scope), gameplay was $#< remove me > at !e at first, the beginnign missions way too hard, took me awhile to get past them hah. the controls are easy to learn, hard to use, camera sucks, cant change the view in the cars(why not? i would like at least a dash cam!). cars all sound relativly the same(not cool), vice city had different sounding cars, but no licensed ones =o( another thing i didnt like about this game (besides difficulty in navigation and missions) is the NPC animations...lame... if i hit someone with a car at 140 kilometers an hour i dont expect my car to slow down THAT much, plus the people just sorta stumble and fall, not enogh blood, too much swearing, i expect to drag their bodies under my car for a few feet, or just leave a big blood stain(i.e.Vice City, GTA3[better than vice city]). i like how when you get a flat tire and drive with it your tires get worn to the rims and you start to spark hehe. dont like how you have to have a gun to steal cars. once more, missions ridiculously(spelling?) hard, and the movies are unskippable unless you have seen them before, $#< remove me > at !in hell that is lame. wouldnt buy the game, well not yet, havent beaten it yet, might have to restart soon i cant find my mem card and my ps2 has been runnin the game for a few days. im really lookin foreward to the free roam mode though, and possibly a feture to store cars(GTA)? i really want my skyline haha! once more, missions too hard. make it a little easier, clean up some stuff, it will be a l337 game...sequel, mix GTA and this game? would be neat..and add some motorcycles or something! for all the hype, i was hoping i would get a much MUCH better game then this. too bad.

just starting review thing...hit me up with advice n stuff lol

GENIUS16482

DAMO!!! from Northants England says (28/Jan/2003):
The getaway is the best game to be released for ps2 so far i reckon it pisses all over gta3 cause gta3 the characters move andlook unrealistic but getaway everything looks genuine from cars and buildings to people. the best game so far well done getaway.

not bad, but many flaws!16515

A gamer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada says (28/Jan/2003):
this game is fun and the cars are real. you put the disc in the ps2 watch a lady get killed and then your racing through a european city. I watched a green car not moving for about 5 mins until i realized i was already playing. The navigation is so hard to learn. And you cant have any fun by yourself after you complete several trial and error missions. But overall the game and shooting is fun and exciting. The cars are cool. But VC Cops are better. But in London is a gang is chasing you and you see a cop, the cops will find them and arrest them for chasing you at high speeds. The first game where i felt protected by law enforement. Good Game but i would still take Vice over this. But Vice City could still learn a few things from this game.

Needs Some Serious Work16384

JaeStreets from NYC says (26/Jan/2003):
I like to start by saying this game cannot compare with GTA in anyway. The only thing I like about the game is that is realistic and the story is pretty good not as good as GTA but good. The biggest problem I have with The Gateway is that its always the same thing you drive for a long time when you get to the end you kill a bunch of people then thats the end of the level. I also hate how every loves to shoot out your tire, that gets really old real fast. Also no back or side view on the controls man that sucks you cant tell how far or close your tails are. And no map man that really hurts you can really lost running into dead ends and wrong ways. To end this game and bad but if your looking for another GTA look some where else.

OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAH!16384

Shadow from Blandford, England says (23/Jan/2003):
This game rocks it knocks Grand Theft Auto out for the count. It’s unbelievably realistic. No cross hairs, no highlighting the characters and no collecting health. The storyline and the dialog is genies. Its brilliant from the bending down to pick up a gun to the way they move when injured and how he can shoot round corners. (That’s my favourite bit) they’ve thought of everything I’d recommend this to anyone. Lets have a big cheer for the creators and hope they make a second.

A good game16049

Benjamin from Wellingborough/ England says (22/Jan/2003):
To be honest I have tried to distance myself from all the hipe surounding the Getaway. As I was afraied that I was going to be as dissapointed as I was when I played MGS2. But, having compleated the game I now feal reddy to review it. Firstly when you start up the Getaway, you will notice three things. One, This is no GTA clone it feals more like a movie. Two, The cutsceans are acomplished, looking extreamly realistic and there is evan spot on lipsink. Three, the swearing is realy bad, its like watching Lock Stock or Pulp Fiction and its relentless you canot play this game when youngsters are about. OK down to playing the game the first level throws you right in it, having to chase down the crims that have killed your wife and kidnapped your son. I have heard many complaintes from people that the lack of in game map is frustraring. But I belive that following the indicators works fine it does take a little time getting used to it though. The shooting sections (and there are alot of them) are fantastic, there is no health bar so you will have to judge how badly wounded he is. Its easaly done when he is screaming "I Carnt take much more of this" and he is strugaling to walk. To rectify this problem simply stand him next to a wall and he will heal. Many if not most of Mark Hammond's missions involve getting from point A to point B and blowing stuff up or shooting lots of theaving gangs. Alough there is one mission when you have to sneek into Jolson's manor and that is great fun and there are other stealth elliments which are enjoyable as well. However, its DC Frank Carter's missions where the game realy throwes of its shackles. Speeding down the road in a police car hearing crime reports blaring in the radio is fantastic. So are the missions when you bust into gangs hideouts and shoot up the place. Overall the graphics are fantastic the story is great and it playes very well. So why not top marks? Well I can clearly see what team soho are trying to do but they dont quite pull it off. The final mission feals rushed and the game does have some glitches, but nothing to realy spoil the experience. However, I expect that the game will sell well. With the amount of money ploughed into the game, and as the ending sugests there is clearly the possibiloty of a sequill and improvement, then maybe we shall see a nine or a ten on the score sheet. I await the possibility with bated breath and in the mean time crack some Yardie/Triad heads.

Betta than Vice City13472

Gordie from Aberdeen, Scotland says (25/Dec/2002):
Oh my god, the difference between the getaway and vice gity iz huge. The getaway is soo realistic compared 2 vice citys, the sound, the gameplay, the missions, everything about about the getaway wins hands down, and the might of Grand theft auto doesnt look so big now

The Real Grand Theft Auto13280

Sonny from Glasgow, Scotland says (22/Dec/2002):
This game is so realistic and so life-like that it beats grand theft auto's cartoony graphics hands down. The only way it could get more real is if you bought a gun and went out and tried to actually nick a car. I can't believe the game is so good. It has real cars in it unlike other games which have made up vehicles. You also get real-life gangs and the whole of London. I know it has been a long wait but the makers have spent more than £5million making this game and you can totally see it is money well spent. It has every single part of London in it even little hide-outs you might go to if you stay in London. The game also has mini-games in it like GTA's mini cab service. The only bad thing which I can say about the game is the long rime it takes to regain health, not good in the middle of a shoot-out. This game is so good that I am actually not even gonna bother with Vice City.

room for improvement13054

Craig from Sunderland says (17/Dec/2002):
The pros and cons for the getaway are numerous on one hand its realistic compared to Vice city on the other its not as adventurous. I think that the getaway like most games on there first outing will be like a pilot for the sequil things such as weapon select, drive byes and amungst other things an instant health regeneration could have been included on this, but before we talk about a sequil weve got to think how long it took for this one to come out well over a year so we have to say for a first atempt with an anticipation of well over a year its not the greatest, note to creators, take a look at the likes of GTA3 and GTA Vice City before contemnplating releasing the getaway 2.
I would also have liked it to have been longer for an experianced gamer a game like this one can mean a weekend on the ps2 Vice City was a dodle so this was hardleys the longest game ever for me.The best points of the game were things such as the graphics very smooth and i was suprised to se all of the licensed brands on the game this added to the realism. The sound was pretty terrible very delade and very poor and scratchy and sometimes tripped when doing handbrakes. But overall a ham fisted attempt to take the topspot which just felt short of glory.
