Generaly metal gear solid two lives up to the hype that surrounded it, however it had one fundamental flaw: Raiden (also known as "nancy boy raiden", "jack the stripper" and "the gay one from MGS"). This review may appear to be just another rant about how we all hate raiden, but the charicter solid snake is key to the whole point of the game. A substantial part of the MGS1 plot was snakes self-descovery. He was gruff and "well hard" but we could tell he was hurting. He had to kill big boss (I think the "some people just need killing" line means Solid Snake and BB each needed to fight each other for a real life & death battle to feel alive, not just that BB should die) who might have answers to his questions. Then he has to kill liquid, who likewise might know more about his past. After killing liquid, snake comes up with the line "See you in hell liquid. that takes care of the cremation" which is totaly out of character, and is obviously just hiding behind bravado. Raiden has none of this: he just mopes around feeling sorry for himself, and moans more than papa roach do in thier second album. Raidens all like: "oooooooowwwww!, I'm so sad, got gunpowder in my dinner", and snakes like "I've got no more tears to shed". Also, raiden was a child warrior right? so he should have scars right? but he doesn't, therefore we can deduce he wears makeup, and probably a bra.
in conclusion: snake good, raiden is a ladyboy, that makes E.E. look like she's the bride from kill bill.
does anyone out there actualy like raiden?

This is the best game I have ever played on any console. I first played this game when MGS2:Sons of Liberty came out in the year 2000. I remember every time I would pop in the game, I would sit there and just be amazed by the graphics. As the year passed I found out that X-box got a new and better edition of OUR game and I was kindof of ticked off. Substance came out for PS2 a year after it did for X-box and I went out and bought it. MGS2:Substance is so much better than MGS:Sons of Liberty and I am kindof tired of people saying it stinks because they don't want to bother replaying the game in its newest and best form. Honestly its their fault that they didn't get the Substance edition in the year 2000. In an interview with Hideo Kojima, he stated that since Americans were pushy about the game's deadline, that they would not get the best version of the game when it first hit shelves. Substance has the same stunning graphics as Sons of Liberty but has improved things within the game and has more modes to play. Substance is better than Sons of Liberty for these reasons: Substance has about six parts, one of these parts being the Sons of Liberty story. The other parts are VR missions (and alternative missions), Skateboarding Mode, Snake Tales, Casting Theater, Big Boss Survival Mode, and the usual options that Sons of Liberty had (dogtag viewer, etc). The Sons of Liberty story portion of Substance has been improved with better thermal googles that have colors of red, blue, green and yellow instead of the boring bright red. It also gives you a suppressor for Snake's USP on the tanker level. There are also more features which will take too long to list. Overall, whether you buy the Substance or Sons of Liberty edition, this game is awesome and beats all other tactical action games such as Splinter Cell. Also the awesome thing about this game is that the creators made this game from scratch and didn't use someone else's game engine. I have beaten both MGS:Sons of Liberty and MGS2:Substance 100%, meaning I have collected every single dogtag on both games, beaten the VR missions on Substance with 100% first place ratings, and have beaten the tanker on European Extreme mode (European Extreme only comes on the Substance edition of MGS). So if anyone out there needs help just email me. (***Also, if you are into MGS keep your eyes out for MGS3:Snake Eater coming in November - because its probably going to blow even MGS out of the water***).

This is the best game i played in my intire life!!!
It has everything like 300+ VR missions 150+ altrnetve mission. You can play up to 7 characters, raiden, ninja raiden,x raiden (raiden completly nude) snake, pliskin,snake tuxedo and the hardest charcter of all mgs1 snake. You have casting theater (watch secenes from game with other charceters) and boss survial mode ( beat all bosses in the game nonstop) So i would make this game in the top 10! I really can't wait for Metal Gear Soild 3 Snake Eater. i really hope you think this game is the best too.

mgs2 substance was the coolest game I EVER PLAYED
but that gay man raiden made the game weird
because if you played as snake the whole darn thing
the storyline will be much more interesting
but otherwise the game was cooler then ever
like the snake tales were the best even externl gazer
that was hard though
i liked every VR and alternative mission
Pliskin was my favorite character
so yeah this game was cool
but raiden was not!

Although some people say that this game is just SOL, the fact is there's more to it than that. This game has all the features of SOL but it also has 5 extra missions starring snake that are irrelevant to the SOL story, and there are tons of VR missions that are helpful for honig your skills or just for some fun. There are a few changes to the game, one of which are the thermal goggles that now use shades of color to determine heat like blue being cold and red being very hot. And to take a brake from all those missions, u can Skateboard a little with Snake or Raiden. Basically Substance is a must-have for metal gear fans even if u havent played SOL!

this game is very cool u get to skateboard and play snake tales but why is that gay ass raiden in the game i wish he wasent in it cuz he sucks so much and snake is way way better then him snake is the best at sneaking and the game is very good but it takes long to unlock stuff but it is fun and i cant wait until next year cuz Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater is coming out!!!

this game is good but it takes long to unlock everything but snake tales is pretty good but the thing that sucks about snake tales is that u cant see cinemas and use the codec and skateboarding is ok but u cant unlock new levels to skateboard in and the game only had 6 bosses but if u unlock everything the game might get alot funner but the game ius good but i cant wait until next year cuz Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater is coming out!!!

don't know y everyone gives it a 10. The only part i like about it is snake tales and skate boarding. besides that i hate it in every way known to man and that sucks... but so does raiden. i just hope Mgs snake eater will be better.i really think this game should get a 0 but i am being generous

I got the game a few months ago and i have completed it.i really like the extra missions and snake tales and the skateboarding, it'll keep you occupied for ages even when you have completed the game.
The game itself, i could keep playing forever because it is just so cool, the graphics are amazing and the gamplay and all the moves that you can do are really good .This is my favourite game and i cant wait until MGS3 : Snake eater comes out !

this game is really fun! the extras like skateboarding and VR training is REALLY cool! hint: when collecting dog tags, the people that say stuff like "are you going to shoot me!" to get their tag, all you have to do is show that your not bluffing by shooting them once in the leg. They will then hand over the dog tag. :D

I am a huge mgs fan and bought this the moment that it came out and I must say that it is the best game I have ever played. This game not only has 300+ VR missions but also has the entire SOL game included.The graphics in this amazing game are simply the best that the playstation 2 has to offer with brillant weather and lighting effects. Totally a grade.The gameplay is simply outstanding. I love holding up the guards and collecting the dog tags.The sound is also amazing with sharp effects really helping to bring the game to life.The only problem with this game is that in SOL you can't play as Snake for the entire game which really sucks. Here's hopping for a sequel ,gs2 rocks!!!!

Alright Substance is a great game! it surpasses SOL in lots of areas, mainly fun factor and life span!
-Graphics-
The graphics are awesome! probably the BEST ever on ps2 of what i seen. Still needs work on the faces though. But i love everything about the graphics in MGS2!
-Sound-
Aww the sound of a gun shoot. Nothing could be better. From the music to the footsteps, MGS2 just exspanded everything and made it better!
-Gameplay-
Gameplay to me is the most important aspect of a game. MGS2 is a great game to play around, especially if you love stealth game as I do. If you could sit down and play a really long time playing the DEMO version of MGS then mgs2 will satisify your needs. There are so many items and weapons. I love using the traquilizer on an enemy guard, then shooting them in the head with the USB or SOCOM.
-Lifespan/replay value-
Unlike Sons of Libery, Substance has WAY more replay value. From the Snake Tales, which are incredibly hard!! To the VR missions which are hard and fun, AND help you learn some important things.
-Fun factor-
Substance is incredibly fun. And i'm talking everything. The main missions, which were in SoL are fun just to mess around, and to get dog tags. But the snake tales and VR missions are fun to. There are so many VR missions, and some secret characters that make them great. But it also has a skateboarding mode in substance. Which is NO Tony Hawk pro skater. I was so disappointed to play the skateboarding mode, i like the levels, but its the controls that make it boring.
-Originality-
Hahaha, if you ever played MGS, then you know that MGS2 would be loaded with originality! The characters, story, enviroment, everything.

metal gear solid 2: substance is one of the greatest games i have ever bought i have completed it over 12 times on both tanker and plant i have unlocked the bandana, stealth suite and all of the wigs i have about 2-3 more dog tags to collect on the plant but i have all of the dog tags on all of the setting in the tanker epsiode it is quite easy to do this. if your wondering why i am going on about all of this i'll tell you its because i am giving you an idea of the length of the game and this is only the "sons of liberty" part. after that there are 400+ vr missions to get your teeth stuck into enjoy...
it also has the "making of..." disc for all thgose metal gear nutters out there showing the toy's, soundtracks and believe it or not the making of it etc... this really is one of the best games in the world... i'm glad i bought it and if you do you will enjoy it too. if you want anymore info on the history of the metal gear games or the upcoming ones e-mail me at g3k0_b0y< remove me > at yahoo.co.uk

As a huge fan of mgs... I have long waited to get a hold of such a great game. I had a mgs2 sol for quite a while and it took me some time to get the substance but now I realize it's worth the wait. The story line is totally cool, it really takes out politics, government and a lot of things iin a very realistic way. The graphics are superb, I personally loved it. The musical scoring done was totally cool, it adds up the intensity in the game. I say once you played you'll never want another game and you won't be asking for more except for the next mgs(hopefully).

This game rules, I bought it in Monday and can't stop playing it. I like the VR Missions but they can become boring. I never could collect dog tags in Sons of Liberty but hold up mode helps me get used to it. I can't wait until i unlock X Raiden, Plisken, Snake Tuxedo, and MSG1 Snake. This game rules!!

sons of liberty was such a great game, this is like awsome because there is so much extra features like skateboarding in the big shell as snake or raiden, playing 500 vr missions, secret playable characters and game modes,5 snake tales, boss survival and castingtheater modes, and all of sons of liberty with all the secrets plus extra ones like wearing sunglasses and european xtreme mode. the graphics are perfect the sound is awsome and the game has fun written around it. My favorite character is snake because raiden i think is a stupid wimp because when you have to use you hands to fight he just slaps and he takes to long to finish his attack and he feels sorry when he kills a guard. But raidens girlfriend (rose) is even worse she acts like raiden you remember what tommorow is,raiden i feel lonely, i think rose is on crack. well other than that this game is awesome buy this.

Alrite I must say that when I got this game, I had already played Metal Gear Solid 2:Sons of Liberty. I didn't think this was gonna be a big improvement on the already great game. Just picture one of the best games for the PS2, Metal Gear Solid 2, then add a bunch of more new exciting features that are superb, and what do you get? A Solid game, GOOD story, GREAT graphics, And even BETTER gameplay...this is an experiance not to be missed, especially if you liked the original Metal Gear Solid for playstation. I can't stress enough how great this game is, and if you have a PS2 and everything you need to get started... THEN GO OUT AND BUY THIS GAME!!
