After playing through Dynasty Warriors 4 a few times, I was left very disappointed. I was really into the 3rd part because it offered a lot of new things that were really needed in part 2 but this 4th installment to the series is very much like the 3rd part with very few differences.
Sure there are new characters to the game now but they're really just old characters from part 3 that were re-done to be in the main characters line-up. The story is basically the same as it was in part 2 and 3 with the same characters and very few new moves. I'm getting pretty tired of the same characters returning to fight wars again and again. Koei need to create a whole new cast of characters with only a few of the old characters returning. Let's not forget about a whole new set of moves too. A new story should also be created. Please, no more remixes of the same story. People out there are shelling out over $50 to buy these games and it's lame to see the same thing again with only a few tweaks here and there.
The next thing that annoys the hell out of me is the option of switching the language from english to japanese with english subtitles on being taken away in this 4th installment. The awesome Japanese voices were translated and acted out horribly. Many of the voices don't even go with the characters (such as Guan Yu and Yuan Shao's American voices). I don't know why Koei decided to take away the option of switching the languages in the first place.
Another thing that really bugs me is that many of the characters who needed to be improved in certain areas such as skill, speed, or power where toned down to the point where it's so much of a hassle to use them that you're better off playing without them. In fact, it would have been better off to not even put them in the game and use the memory for other things. Cao Cao is a perfect example of such characters because he kicked ass in the 3rd part once he got his 4th weapon... in fact he was arguebly the best character in Musou mode with his 4th weapon equipped. In this 4th part however, he sucked like hell. His moves leave him wide open for attacks and his last charge up attack is toned down to where it comes out too damn slow to combo. He doesn't do that much damage either. Zhen Ji is another unlucky one to get toned down. I didn't think she was even among the most powerful warriors from part 3 so why mess up her skills by giving her slow speed and slow and weak moves?
The new seige weapons are not even controllable and most of the orbs are pretty useless. The ice orb was the only one I found to be useful... in fact it's the best orb in the game. Most of the special items that you can equip remained the same as they were in part 3 and your team mates and army are still pretty stupid (they just stand there most of the time and get their butts kicked by the enemy generals). The only time I found my army to be kicking ass is when there is only the main enemy general left in the stage, and then they surround him and beat his ass down.
The endings totally suck in this game as well. I liked the endings in part 3 better. The music was only okay... again part 3 had better music in most cases. Diao Chan's ending didn't make any sense to me according to her story. Why is she so happy and still siding with Dhong Zhuo in the end when it was her goal to overthrow him and Lu Bu because they've endangered her father? In other words, her ending is exactly the same as Dhong Zhuo's.
I could go on with all the negative things about this game but I've said enough. Overall, Dynasty Warriors 4 was only average at best and very repetitive. Please Koei, don't go the way that Capcom took with Street Fighter 2 and all the other "prequels and remixes" of that game.

I only own part 3 of the series and just recently bought part 4 and to tell the truth, they are pretty damn similar to each other. Koei just made the same storyline again, just some of the battlefields are new or different in some way, The got to amp it up and start making a story that shows new areas of exploration like what happened afterwards. The graphics are alright, movies look better but the music wasn't as great as part 3', there weren't many new characters in this one either and the moves are on a little refined from the last part of the series like sima yi's homing lasers.
only a few aspects shine to the last game like the fact that you can make bodyguards units, but koei didn't give the ability to mix up the units with male or female so yo had to pick one or the other. Also what was great was that you could make your own officer and put him/her into play but something i've notice recently was that the officers you make have the same face making them always look similar to each other gotta fix that next time. I've seen that you could assign other generals as your bodyguards in extreme legends 3 which sadly they didn't put into 4. all the ideas before 4 also should be put into one game to make it better than the others.
Other things to improve is the ai, armies don't do crap, Koei an omega force gotta try puttin smarter ai's, specifically ones that like make battling more realistic and unpredictable. In part 4 the stories are all the same, they took out the differnt stories going on like how Zhang Liao betrays Lu Bu but as you playing as him cause you either stick with Lu Bu or you start in the Yellow turban rebllion like every other character. that make no sense cause in 3 every person started in different stages cause they were in the war at different time but in 4 they all start on the same stage. endings also need working on cause I think they make no sense, I was watching a ending where everyones talking and having fun with each other even though a moment ago they where tring to kill each other, part 3's endings made more sense. Overall, it was alright, it could've been better, sense i only play ed two partsof the series Im not bored of the storyline much but please next time make it more original. My own opinion if you like 3 a lot, so much that you would steal it from someone you know then you should try 4 and see how much you like it for yourself.

Yo this is the best game i ever bought it's awsome it gives A nice twist to ancient warriors and fighting with swords and you can even make a custom general my dude uses phenoix sword and as a rank of 1 does +39 damage and i have shadow racer saddle this game rules

THIS GAME ROCKS.
THe first one i played was DW 3 Demo . I absolutely loved it and played the 2 minute demoover and over. Very resently as soon as i saw DW4 in blockbuster i rented it like 5 times in a row, but i cant find it ANYWHERE IN THE SHOPS!. i will search for it.
Graphics are Very good. I just unlocked 8 bodyguards rank Elite and level 14 or something . they 0\/\/N!
I always use my created warrior on edit mode he looks cool and i dress my bodyguards to match . i have a level 3 Crusher sword (you get after the great sword) and 5 attacks. Its sooo goo.
Only bad thing is that privates and seargeants have to wait around for about 5 minutes before they attack once or twice, then wait another 5 minutes thats soo stupid. but once u get Elite guard.
I had to play the level where u attack Lu Bu's castle about 20 times before i defeated lu bu. but i saved right before the gates open so eventually i beat him. Hes soo hard especially when u get him on low health then he does that ANOYING 20 combo and whacks you on the floor. My guards saved me. this game is great. Multiplayer screen bit to small.

i give this game a 10 star, it is hard beating Lu Bu because i play it in hard mode and i got his weapon up to level 10!

I absolutely loved Dynasty Warriors 3 and Xtreme Legends 3! Nothing is better than mowing down hoards of people with my spear or sword! BUT I can't believe that nobody notices the huge flaw in DW4!? Sure, there's better graphics and a few more people. I even like challenging officers to 1 on 1 duels without the rest of the army getting in the way. But in DW3 all the enemies run toward you in huge packs of like 30 or more as soon as you get near them. In 4 you have to get like, 5 feet away b4 enemies even notice you! So, where are those droves of enemies I love? You only get to fight like 10 people at a time. Yes, there are lots of other goodies, and a few more items, but that one flaw messes up the point of the game. More is better! DW3 was a 10, but DW4 is closer to a 6. I would probably give DW4 a 9 or 10 if I never played the third one, because that is my only complaint. And just for the record, Lu Bu is the easiest person to use and combo with, but Zhang Liao is my favorite and the best!!

AHHHHH!!!~~ Finally DW4 coming out in jus a month.It says it will be out on March,27th,2003!!!~~.i heard it has some more characters like one for each kingdoms. For Wei is Cao Ren,Wu is Zhao Tai,and.... ah $#< remove me > at !,i forgot who was for shu! well jus buy the game see who it is.im defenetly buying it bcuz i have DW1,Dw2,and Dw3.The first one was terrible,2nd was ok,and Dw3 is awsome.I hope to see more improvements on Dw4.If you r one of those dynasty Fans,you should be dying to buy Dw4 like I am.If you r new and bought the game in jus looking interresting, you r one of those luckiest guy like me.

I think that dynasty warriors 4 well be awesome i dont quite have enough money yet to go buy it but i want and sice 2 and 3 and three are awesome i think 4 well be awesome as soon as i hyeard it come out i thought it would be awesome so this one should be great with the new stuff such as seige equipment and i heard about earlier this month so i cant wait to buy it

I have been waiting three months for this game and I finally got it. And let me tell u I wasn't the least bit diapointed. It was everything I expected. I luv the new siege engines and I am especeilly fod of the duels. Although I think it is kind of cheap that the officers can regain health durring the Duel. A minor detail. I have #2 and #3 but this one is the best. The only thing I am having trouble with is getting Jiang Wei and some of the levels im missing(Tian Sui) Can any one help me on that? This game also has tremendous replay value the sound is kind of corny but the weapons and graphics rock. I give this game a 10/10

From the first two games to this game is a very BIG change. If you ask me i think the first two were not that good and 3 was ok but then the 4th came and I will never let anyone barrow it because it's so good. Ever since I bought this game i've played it almost 5 hours a day and never got sick of it once since I got it a week ago and it's been a blast. From creating your own General to creating your own bodyguards. Even though there is no cheats yet it's ok. From stuning graphics, to just the game play it's great. But one of the problems with the game is sometimes it can be frustrating and at timess you just wanna throw your controller on the ground but that only happened to me once when my friend turned it on hard without telling me. Other than that one bad fact it's a great game and I suggest you go out and get it.

this game is so good that i speeled that word wrong. with 50 stages i will be rocking it ova spring break. ahh, graphics are amazing like eyob worku. 2 vicious, thats all i could say. 2 vicious, 2 vicious, 2 vicious, 2 vicious, 2 vicious, 2 vicious, 2 vicious. P.S.: i have bought it and each officer has 6 costumes. The weapon system is good and the only flaw is that each player has 2 many stages. The fourth weapon is like a secret with mesasge after a person does something special. It looks better and the orbs are 2 good. Why do people give this game a 7. Respect it!

Man this is the best game on PS2.... This game is best compaired to the movie Brave Heart... Its not a shoot-m-n the back game but real man to man combat.... If you boys are not ready to play a real man game go pick up Rain Bow 6 or something and leave the real battles to the men.

SUMMARY: Although this is the 4th ride for the DW series, there seems to be a little improvement from DW2. Graphics are slightly better, only 3 new officers, and same-old-musics. Although there are more missions (About 17), each battle are super short. It takes about 20-30minutes to beat a mission. Makes only little satisfaction with about 200 to 300 K.Os. But still this is a great game to buy for those who never played DW series. But you know, I was a big fan of this game and this it was a big dissapointment for me. So like I said, this is a LOVE IT OR HATE IT game.
THE GOOD: Over 40 playable players make this game 5% better than DW3. The Duel system make it another 5% better. More deeply explained storyline make it 5% better. Any other improvement: No.
THE BAD: Missions are double sized, characters are super sized, but playing time won`t. Missions are too short, and that makes it frustrating. You can`t feel the same sensation you get after the mission. Edit mode is poorly made,and There are too many bodyguards around.
In order to get the fame back like it did in Dynasty Warriors 2, I expect DW5 need alot of improvement. New story, whole new characters, new stages, and definitly, online vs mode.

this game is sooooooooooooooo awesome its improvements like the create a playa is sweet. I also like the weapon experience system. Its alot better than walking around lookin for a new weapon. And plus it doesnt have all the blood and guts that make games stupid. This is a must buy for action gamers.

I an a big fan of this game. There is only one problem. There is no blood. When you get hit with as sword or arrow you are gonna bleed.In the cinamatics when you kill an officore they should be bleeding. I hope the next one will have blood.

Even though the most of the things haven't changed in the games; the graphics is great. I think story has gotten deeper; it went into details of each of the three kingdoms and the other side charaters as well; even though the history tends to trail off when you are in some battles, like the battle of Chi Bi, if you are on Cao Cao's side. I personally think the new weapon system is great because it is easier for you to to get the new weapons than in the third and extreme legend; where you have to play the games over and over again to get the new weapons. I also think the tales of the three kingdoms are great because you get to learn how ech of the three kingdoms got to its peak of greatness. Guan Yu is truely the God of War. PEACE OUT!!!

the gameplay has improved and the graphics to but the game is really easy (so not like dynasty warriors 3 xtreme legends) i thoughd there was a extra hard mode like in xtreme legends the costumes are beter to and the voices either but it not like i expected i played the most dynasty warriors 2 3 xtreme legends and 4 now but i dont see much improve ment from dynastywarriors 3 to 4 and it is way different i like to search for the weapons and the much items but not i this game to bad :(

Indeed, this great game based on the 3 kingdoms kicks ass, expecially the great warriors and generals such as the 5 tigers. Lu bu and the mighty cao cao most of all the orb enhancements kick ass too, and officers are creatable, which adds more gameplay also great sequal to a awsome game! laterz
