stinky breath of fire38697

Desx from laurel ,md says (30/Jan/2004):
what's wrong with this game? after few hours of playing you
realize you should restart it from beginning? having to restart
over and over only to accumilate more items and xp that
doesn't really help. I also Hated the "D-counter".what the %#&!
is that? there is no way to bring the percentages to go down and you die once it reaches it's max? The saves are very limited and
there is no resting place to heal you. I bought this game for $18
and it was brand New! now i know why and i want my money back.
Stay away from this stinky breath!

Great game concept; bad, bad save tokens!32613

Chris Grennon from Troy, NY says (28/Sep/2003):
I love the Breath of Fire series, and I'd have to say this is a great, unique game. The graphics, music, and sounds are all up to par, the gameplay is totally new and kept me going for more, even with the re-starting Sol system. But for all it's innovation there's an equal amount of irritation. For the last few hours of the game (I'm talking three to five hours), after the boss fight with the mechanical Bocsh, there were no Save Tokens to be found, anywhere, and I made it to the near-end of the game and died, over and over, and I can't find a token for the life of me, which made me lose total respect for this otherwise great game. Trust me; save tokens are scarce at the end of the game, devoid of them actually, unless you kill a certain secret chest on round 3. Bogus, if you ask me. There's something about having to start the game over because of no bloody Save Tokens that just irks me profoundly. Save those Tokens early on in the game, or else.

Pretty poor.31828

Azreal Darkskies from Toronto, Ontario, Canada says (11/Sep/2003):
I was kind of interested in this game originally, I mean its an RPG from a decent series. I was glad to know that when it came out it got some decent reviews, so I picked it up. Now I am suprised that managed to get $30 canadian when selling it to a hawk shop.

The beginning suprises you, it gives you the impression that you will be completly entertained from start to finish. Sadly after 20 minutes of play you recognize that its a broken promise. I have several complaints with this game and I plan to voice then all.

Lets start with something you can't avoid: the text. It pops up in small word bubbles, that appears very slowly and the down even contain complete sentences. Here is an example "I think that we should head >second for the next page to appear< that way" It would less of a problem if they picked a better font, its painfully hard to read.
I also found the cell shaded graphics, odd and hard to look at. I have no problem with cell shadeing its just the character designs are wholly unappealing.
Capcom looked at there other successful series and checked if they could draw something from them. Well they took the wrong item, SAVE TOKENS! Its an RPG, I want to save every five minutes, not save up my expensive tokens to save only when absolutly needed. While I'm on the subject of save points it wouldn't hurt to mention they are few and far between.
The game is also incredably difficult. It has a steep learning cur, and difficult enemies. They tried to make up for it by allowing you to start the game over from any point in the game with any experience levels you may have gained, but it doesn't give you a head start because the monters just get tougher.

It does have a unique battle system which lets you stratigically plan your battles using bait and traps, but its not really worth it. Givin the other downfalls of the game the battle system doesn't make it a worthy buy.

This game was just too tedius and boring for me to continue on with it, avoid it.

Please Note:31148

Aziel Corenth from Grapevine,Texas,USA says (27/Aug/2003):
The game is a good one all in all. But one of the things that irked me about some of the reviews is that they don't understand, everytime you beat it or restart unlocks just a little more of the game, little bit more of the story line, a different route to take in game. Yes you can beat it rather quickly the fist time through, but you have to play for a while to get at the depth of the story, you can't just rush through it.

If you are stuck in NORMAL RPG mode then do not play this game.....30024

Ice Man from Austin, TX says (14/Aug/2003):
If you only enjoy and are used to playing RPG's where random monsters attack, you can not control who you fight and you have no control how many you monsters you fight at one time you may not like this game. In Breath of Fire you get to see any monster/attacker you may possibly face ahead of time and you decide if you want to fight them or run or even initate the fight to get some extra licks in.
This game is a great game IMO! Yeah it has its issues such as you can only save when you have a save token which comes few and far, or the D-Counter which just keeps going up for no reason and you can't EVER bring down. But once you get rolling in the game and begin to understand what the heck it is you are supposed to do (the book doesn't tell you) the game play becomes a lot more easier and you can get through the game fairly simply if you actually use your brain. One thing to keep in mind with this game is that most of the time you do not have to fight more than one or two monsters at a time. When you keep to this strategy you will get killed (I didn't) and you won't even think about having to save anymore. If you kill everything you come across then you realize that you don't have to travel far to replenish health items. So with that and remembering that you really don't have to use the D-Counter for anything except the last bosses this game can be really enjoyable.

Great Game29508

Chris from Tennessee, USA says (8/Aug/2003):
It may start a little hard, not giving you enough time to get used to the combat system, but once you master it it's quite easy. I like how the battles are not about fighting 2000+ monsters, but the length of individual battles. Also, the fact that running into one monster doesn't spawn 5 others out of nowhere on another combat screen, but WYSIWYG on the same screen. Many strategies in combat too, such as setting up a G-Spell and having someone push the enemy or lure the enemy into it. The hardest part is effectively using combos, but once you master that the game gets a bit easy. I first had to restart halfway through because of the D-Counter, not knowing there was no way to get it down. But once you learn not to use it and just fight harder battles out, then it's not so bad. I ended the game with it at 70% my second try. A small tip though: You need about 10% at LEAST left over at the end in order to beat the final enemy. The storyline gets better as you beat it over and over, learning new things and going in-depth. Even though it's short enough to beat in 2 days (If you play it 24-hours straight like me), it has a high replay value. The mini-game is fun too, once you find the fairy in Biocorp that takes you to the colony. The minigame will carry over in each new game. I like the new game+ idea from Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, which is also where the battle setup came from (WYSIWYG from CT). I don't use traps, but it's still a good idea, as you can weaken tougher enemies greatly so battles aren't tough (I.E. Deathcow guarding the treasure chest in the beginning is tough without using traps). Overall I loved the game, and I'm still playing it. Better to rent than to buy, however, as you can beat it through twice in a week. Maybe rent it twice?

Should you play this game?29438

Rayne from Columbus, OHh says (7/Aug/2003):
This game was obviously and poorly created to attempt gamers to purchase rather than rent. I was exremely bored with the necissity of replaying it over several times to complete. Though the new scenes revealed by restarting are nice, they were not enough to warrant the restart. Yes, there are a few other bonuses, like saving party XP and carrying over a few items, but again it falls short by putting an extremely low limit on your items, and I never needed to use the extra XP to continue. This was only an attempt to try and make a 10 to 20 hour rpg last longer, but it only make it irritating. IF you like RPGs, then rent this one before wasting any extra cash.

No Save Points...28683

Ellen from West Bloomfield, Michigan, USA says (26/Jul/2003):
It's a good game and all i guess. but, it's like all about going through lifts and defeating enemies... there's no real mystery and everything is straightforward.

but, the thing i don't like about the game is that the only way to save is to have a save token! and that hardly appears in the levels. unless, of course, you die. no free resting areas and no save points just sucks.

but, it's an ok game.

Don't even bother buying!27936

John from Sacramento, CA United States says (16/Jul/2003):
DOn't waste your money buying this game unless if you're a die-hard fan of the Breath of Fire games and must own every game of its kind. The only reason why I gave this game a two is because I'm a long time fan of the series. Still though, just rent this game because you should beat it in one day. Playing through it again is just a waste of time... even though you get to keep your level and stuff like that. This game's attack system is very similar to that pathetic "Xeno"saga game... "Xeno"saga should have never been released in the first place along with this game of poor quality. Xenogears totally stands out in most cases compared to "Xeno"saga. All the other Breath of Fire games are better than this crappy new installment to the series.

Good rpg but d-counter I HATE IT27782

Crazy chicken from tampa florida usa says (13/Jul/2003):
The rpg overall is very ecelent so i would of given it a 10 but d-counter is just overkill on the complexity i mean they should at least give you a way to lessen the counter like you sit there for a while and it goes down but if you sit there for a while it just goes up and on the part when you gotta fight like 12 rangers then the bot using d-breath is a requirement and they dont give you the chance to get it lowered at all so it lowers the games rating to 9

Excelent!27481

Ryu from California, USA says (9/Jul/2003):
I thought this was the perfict way for the game to go. The whole d-counter thing is a pain but it adds to the complexity of the game. And obviously poeple who can't get this are not to bright. So i give this game 10 stars it is just to good. It ranks up there with xenosaga and other epic games such as pc's Silver.

This is one of the best that should be in the gamers library26627

joey triveonni from fresno california says (29/Jun/2003):
this is one of the best games Iv'e seen since ffX and kingdom hearts. the graphics awsome and sound is also good too. I like the gameplay also cause you could also set traps for your opponet. For all you people who says it "suxx!" you were playing another game cause if you say it's like xenosaga then your wrong cause xenosaga doesn't even compare to this game.it may only have like 20 hours of gameplay but you can restat the game after you beat it and still have the same level that you had in the last game.

Excellent. Capcom Scores.26141

RetroGamer from Baton Rouge, Louisiana says (24/Jun/2003):
This game's quirky graphics were as great as those of Windwaker on Gamecube. The story was intriguing, and the way it was set up (i.e. more every time you beat it) made me want to play it again and again. The combat system was almost a carbon copy of the one from the old Parasite Eve game, which I found to be a refreshing break from the Active Combat System that Square overuses, and the standard turn-based combat of most other RPGs. The only reason I gave it a nine was because I never, on principle, give tens.

it blows25370

Justin Keller from dunnellon florida says (14/Jun/2003):
its battle style is like a rip from xenosaga and i know capcom could have done better graphics and gameplay wise..and the story could use a little more defining and the whole d ratio meter thing makes it suck because there is no way to bring it down i rented it and beat it straight through in 1 day it was kind of pathetic for a BOF game they should think alot more and put alot more work into the next one

BOF: Dragon Quarter24379

A gamer from Westport, WA says (30/May/2003):
I had more fun with the other 4 BOF's then this one. This BOF is nothing like the Others and to me, it's fighting style is nothing but a cheap rip off of Xenosaga, and that game suxx compared to Xenogears. The whole save token in DQ was stupid, the designs for Ryu could have been better, all and all this game was a horribly cheap "RIP OFF"!!! It never should have been released, I had it for 8 hours and demanded my money back, this game "SUxx"!!!!!

the begining24379

hi people from louisiana, usa says (30/Mar/2003):
the begining is awesome and cool. and thats it. ryu should be upgrade to lvl 5 i think at start and bosses should be a bit easier but all and all its cool. enjoy the game to its fullest. meaning,...after defeating alot of people,... redtart with party xp at high lvl again ana again anad agian untill you have well over 2000. this will take about 10 times if you dont use any during the game. Use all xp on ryu. extra from your remaining battles should be given to nina so she wont die later on in the game when you find her. one more thing. Botch is a huge pain in the < remove me > at $$ if you know what i mean. peae out.
