Poor turning = amazing driving | | Jordan from Topeka, Kansas says (9/Apr/2003): | Zombies, classic fighting champions and now....racing?! The people at capcom have strayed from their traditional game titles and graced us with a cel-shaded wonder that is auto-modellista. Finaly, we street-racing fans have an Online racer that can visualy live up to our recently raised expectations(i.e Gran Turismo 3). But once you finaly finish customizing your definition of the "ultimate" street machine, you're ready to take'r to the streets.
Due to companies that produce most of the racing games we have come to know and love, we have been conditioned to drift around turns; capcom totaly neglected that concept when designing Auto M. After I finished the offline portion of the game and had unlocked all of the mods, I took my skyline to the online stage. BIG MISTAKE! Not only did i get torn apart, but i was left feeling dumbfounded by what had just taken place.
There is a certain technique that i have found is used quite frequently to round tight corners, of which i have named it "The Kamikazi Power Slide" (or TKPS), that defies not only the laws of physics but allows any first-time-player to race at the level of a pro. This technique intails flying into a turn at 190 and slaming straight into the wall, thus richocheting you in the direction you need to go (all while keeping you at a comfortable 160-170 range of speed).
I'm aware that i gave this game a 7 rating and that I have ripped into the turning flaw more than a little, but on every other platform (sound, grafics, replayability) Auto-Modellista takes the cake. And once I got over the feeling of betrayel and acustomed myself with the "KPS" I couldn't put the controller down. I recomend everyone with a broadband adapter atleast rent Auto M. and prepare to be dazled.
| Not what its cracked up to be | | Jordan from Wilmette, IL, USA says (14/Apr/2003): | With a total of close to 70 cars, this game does have a good variety, but in total number of tracks, 9, it doesnt. doesnt matter if the track is up or down, the road itself does not change. there are cars that should have been here. the G35/altima, prelude, accord V6, 95-99 eclipse turbo, lancer evo 8, 2004 wrx sti, etc. should have been in this game, rather than any daihatsu, or any of the silly custom garage and mail stuff. I find the menu system a litte confusing. Also the cars handle like a rubber duck on water than it does a car on the road, though things that are unrealistic such as this game's handling is to be expected from a cartoon. the cell shading looks fantastic, but the speed lines look stupid. the physics with hitting the wall, which people do to get a top 10 on the internet rankings, and hittting other cars is a little strange, especially when someone elses car goes right through yours. though really I have played this game alot, and have been able to put its flaws aside mostly for playing it online against other people. But sometimes that fun is not there because of some people's dishonesty, such as when everyone decids and agrees to run a honda civic, and some guy thinks its fun to run a gt 40 and get an easy win. The music isnt the greatest, though it is tolerable. I usually end up turning my own music on after a while. sound effects are not great either. most of the cars engines sound exactly the same at the same rpm. This game is really only worth owning for its ability to play it online. for offline gaming, NFS HP 2 and Burnout 2 are a much better way to spend $50.
| Hm. | | Shaun from Yucca Vally Ca says (22/Nov/2003): | It's got the 2nd gen CRX. That makes it good enough for me. There are many things on this game that make it better then GT3. Example. I hated the fact that you couldn't VISUALLY change your car..Couldn't add ground fx, couldn't add a wing, couldn't even change the colour once you picked one..The parts also weren't licensed. In a way, they were..but say you picked a Honda..You HAD to use Mugen parts..Roll with a Toyota? Had to use TRD parts. It sucked for that reason, as well. AM is also a bit more realistic in a few ways..For example..Throttle responses aren't instant..Shifting doesn't happen as soon as you tap the button..
And yes..I bought it for the REX. GT3 didn't include it, and that angered me. I was impressed. In AM, the CRX has the most potential of any car I've driven. I haven't even beaten the game yet, and with the stage 3 engine rebuild, a racing exhaust, a stage 3 lightening kit, bringing it down to 1800 pounds (About the weight of a First gen.)..I outran my friend's fully raced Skyline R34...I love this game. It may have taken a while to get used to the controls, but once you do, it's every bit as good as GT3. It lacks in some areas where GT3 excelled, such as car and track selection, but in other areas, such as buildability, this game owns over GT3. Hopefully GT4 will take some lessons from this game and N4S Underground.
| Air Baggin' | | Jay from Topeka, KS, USA says (13/Apr/2003): | This graphic wonder is the beginning of the online-racer revolution; being able to trick out a car and then take it to the online stage! I hypothesize that there will be many kids with this game up way past their bed-time.
Though I'm infavor of everyone owning a copy of this game, there is one specific aspect of the game I am greatly disappointed with. Racing fans tend to take pride in their ability to fly around corners as fast as possible without slammin' their ride into walls(i.e Drifting). Auto Modellista has slapped all those people in the face.
This slap goes by the name I have given it "Air Bagging". Try speeding into a 90 degree turn at oh...say...200-190 mph and throwing the wheel into the direction of the turn at the last possible moment before you turn your car into a smashed tin can. Suprise! You have just completed the worst thing to enter racing games since the Turbo VW Beetle.
Other than the Air Baggin' discrace Auto M. is a terrific game, replay ability is outstanding. It even includes actual companies names when buying aero parts for your car.
I would only recomend this game to gamers that have the internet adapter where as the offline portion of Auto M. is VERY short; playing online offers you the ability to chat with players before the race..and trash talk afterwords.
| YOU GUYS DONT KNOW ANYTHING | | YOU ALL SUCK from SF, CA says (2/Oct/2003): | well my first question is, how old are you guys? 13, 14? this is a horrible game. you guys talk about it like you have any idea what kind of car you are driving, you think the steering is realistic? the car handles as if the tires turn all the way around. one tap of the controller and you go spinning out of control. besides the fact ive put the horrible gameplay aside and could easily beat any one of you, none of you really know what you are talking about. you all sound like dorks. those who gave this game a rating of over 2 stars, are mentally retarded. not only am i better than all of you at any racing game, especially gran turismo, but i am most likely alot older, and know everything about cars, which it seems none of you know anything about, except for maybe 2 people, not including the guy who claims to have a "german made Porsche", like there is another country that makes porsche. "this game needs ferari's and lambrogini's" wow buddy, you must be like 10 years old. go play some need for speed, the 4th worst racing game of all time. i am pretty shocked to actually stumble across this page and see what idiots you all are, its rediculous. get a life, get a different game, and come play me, so i can destroy you at it. thank you, good night.
| GREAT features, but alas, this game is just no good. | | Ronnerman!! from usa says (9/Apr/2003): | I kept this game for a week and traded it in for Primal. The custom things were great. Licsensing was cool. Cars were REALLY cool. I even liked the cell-shading. Sound was also good. Sup-ing up cars was fun and you can make them literally any way you can imagine...very cool. (different body panels, paint schemes, wings, wheels, even decals!) Custom garage was a nice touch to add detail.
Now why this game sucks. THE CONTROL IS HORRIBLE!! it's so sloppy! It sucks! For a game that tries to 'act' like a sim, it sure does play like a crappy arcade racer. Even for an arcade racer, the control is bad...WAY too much oversteer. The gameplay completely ruins the game. The control was such an issue, I dumped the whole game. It's not like I only played it for , like only 30 min either. I played it for hours and tried multiple cars and tracks. In fact, after I was done playing AM, I put in GT3 only to find out that my feel for the game was ruined b/c I played AM too long. That's how insanely different it is! That's not a good thing, either. I just didn't like the game at all. I'm glad I bought it at a place where I could return it.
| It's not GT3, but it was never meant compete with GT3 either. | | losi from Camp Hansen, Okinawa US Marines says (21/Nov/2003): | I think we can all agree to disagree on this game though we can all say that GT3 is still king around the track. Auto Modellista is not a simulator by any means and should not be viewed as such, it's not in the same league, not even the same ballpark as GT3. Discussing the differences with these two games is an exercise in futility, though I will say GT3 had a better car selections hands down. I was awe stricken with the cell shaded graphics and believe me, I was skeptical with this design of graphics after my less than sterling experience with ROBOTECH:BATTLECRY. Auto Modellista's strong point is it's user interaction, the game allows amazing levels of personalization and that I think is very important, specialy during online play.
I have not beat the game yet as I am usually dead tired when I come home from work and I also happen to be playing four other games at this time as well. I'm on level six now but I'm taking my time, though a buddy of mine in my unit beat it in a weekend.
Yes this game is not GT3, but it can defenitly get the monkey off your back until GT4 hits the asphalt.
| luis vanegas from CT, new london 4/19/03 | | luis from new london CT usa says (19/Apr/2003): | i like this game, i don't think is the bomb but its pretty cool, like most of you said it has its up and downs, its ups is the way you can custom your cars, but if you just like to custom cars, buy tokyo extrem racer it has a grater choice, another up is the graphics, they are diff from what we are used to c, also the replays are kinda cool, and off course the best is the online part. now its downs are alot, the drifting suxx, but if you get used to it is not that bad you just have to set up the suspension the tires and for alomst every race, and also you have to do change the setting on your transmision if you want your car to perform its best, another thing that sucks is how short this games is, i beat the game in 6 1/2 hours with the first car i got (CRX Which by the way runs more the most cars in this game i top at 227and its my fav.), i do agrre with most of you that are saying that why put car companies like daihatsu and tommy kaira with out the ZZII, suzuky with out the scudo. if you like racing games buy this games but if you r not into racing games just rent it.
| i know cars, i know games, this is a good car game | | Dlefko from Houston, TX says (18/Apr/2003): | Anyone who knows anything about cars will know that cars like the datsun, crx and others have deserved to be in this game. Cars like accords and what not have not earned the right yet. Having that said this game is very very cool. the swap engine feature is a must, to bad you cant tune in that though. The aesthetic upgrades are tremendous. The downhill courses are also a must for anyone who wants to show skill, which this game does inhibit.
About skill, all who say that this game handles too unrealistic and arcade like, you are wrong. Take your GT3 and set a high perfomance car on simulation tires, then go race, you will see what I mean. I will admitt that the drifting on straitaways ia a little dramatic, but half you thirteen year olds haven't been in a car at 135 mph or taken turns at 85 mph, I would know i drive a german made Porsche.
All in all I would say go buy this game at Gamestop, if you dont like it you can return it within seven days with your reciept for a full refund
| what a disappointment | | Michael from Antioch, CA USA says (22/Apr/2003): | The game looks beautiful, the cel-shading is unique. Problem is that the cars handle as cartoony as they look. The physics are TOTALLY unrealistic. Gran Turismo 3 set the benchmark for driving physics, and Auto Modellista is waaaayyyy too arcade-like. The only way to get around corners quickly in this game is to drift, but the drifting is frustrating and totally unrealistic. Tunability is minimal. They give you brand names to pick from, such as Endless, HKS, Greddy, etc, but you get the exact same effect. What's cool is the dress-up feature. You can pick from different kinds of hoods, mirrors, body kits, etc.; anything to make your car look more rice-ready. It's a guilty pleasure putting a BAW (big-a**-wing) on a little Miata. Paint jobs are cool too. Exterior customization is cool, engine modifications are so-so, gameplay is waaay to arcadey to satisfy me. I finished the entire game in about 4 hours with an RX-7. Planning on selling it on eBay now, big waste of my money.
| THIS GAME IS HOT!!! | | AusarAuset from Atlantic City, New Jersey says (28/Mar/2003): | This is one of the best racing games that I have played! I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm a Gran Turismo fan all the way but Auto Modellista is a different type of game than Gran Turismo. I love the graphics which give it a kind of arcade-ish look and feel; but the thing i love most about this game is the fact that you cane tune your car so much. And lets not forget the paint and body shop tuning, Oh my jeebs, that alone is a reason to buy the game. (Hint! SONY & POLYPHONY TAKE A LOOK AT AUTO MODELLISTA'S TUNING CAPABILITY! PUT THAT IN GRAN TURISMO AS WELL!) Kudos to CAPCOM for making this excellent game. Can we please get a regular Street Fighter II Turbo game for the PS2 with the original fight announcer's voice in there? Please CAPCOM? I miss playing that game on super nintendo. AUTO MODELLISTA-A GREAT GAME!!!! I give it 10 stars! **********
| Who cares | | I like cars from St.Paul, MN, USA says (20/May/2003): | I'm sick of people who say "the driving isn't real, the drifting isn't real" Hmmmm....First of all its not a simulator. It's a capcom game and as we gamers know capcom tries to find different ways to make game plays innovative, ITS AN ARCADE GAME. Who cares if you bouce off walls like its nothing, in some races in the game you cant win unless you bouce off those friendly walls(it's another strategy)Cheat? It works people. It's very cartoon like just look at the graphics. It wouldnt surprise me if there's a way to take off and fly. Last, how many of these people have driven a fully modified car with all the weight mods on it and drift the sucker at more than 40 mph or even drive one. How do you know if it drives right...hm? Try it once. Remember it's a game (not real) Okay...Buy it for fun not anger yourself.
| ... | | Mike from Reidsville,NC says (10/May/2003): | Dispite ALLL the bad reviews from different websites I still got Auto Modellista. Now you cant compare every !< remove me > at #% game to GT3,The
gameplay is pretty good but most of the people who gave this reviews didnt have an online adaptor..if u have a online adaptor then this is a must....they have tournaments for money , and lots of prizes coming up. Plus when you beat 1 player then go online...1 of my favorite parts of the game is creating the decals you can litterally put ANYTHING you want on the car...i drew all sorts of designs from robots to turds(lol) to even a car...but theres so much more to draw lol. But online is where this REEEALLY shines...you can form racing teams and such also.
So dont compare this to GT3! Its a must buy if u have a online adaptor.
| Great Game but i've seen better | | Danny from USA says (20/Apr/2003): | This game is very fun. It has its pros and cons but still worth playing. Maybe first glance you'd think it sucks. But later on you get used to it. Pros are that you can swap engines decorate the car.My fav thing to do is always make the hood black for the carbon fiber look. But you can put stickers and paint it whatever color. Also you can learn many different driving techniques. (inertia drift, grip, powersliding, ect.)Cons are that its way too short. Also they kind of overexagerate the driving. But its almost similar to simulation tires in gran turismo 3. The lack of tracks is also a bad thing and that most tracks are just oval. I like Akagi because it has a relation to initial d. I think they should have more mountain roads to drift on.
| RICER GAME!!! | | A gamer says (10/Jan/2004): | RICER GAME, this is a game for dumbasses and there hondas get american cars in this game and german, i mean comeon neon, fart cannons side, sidepanels to make your car look lower, this game need mustangs,corvettes,gt40's,porches,mclerinF1's, and so on not these slow ass honda cars. you should be able to do more with the engine and less with the ricer looks on the car list horsepower and torque and bealbe to put your cars to the limit this supercharges and beter turbo chargers and not that retarded nos in real life that is a BIG waste of money for nos verses a turbo or super charger plus steering and handeling in this game arn't realistic as they could be.
| Nice! | | Danny from Valley Stream, NY says (18/Jul/2003): | This game is one of the best racing games in my opinion. The graphics are nice and the visual effects are sweet. The cars are outstanding and well detailed. Other than that, my favorite part of the game is the online play. That is where it's all at. Some of the racers are pretty tough but, for non-stop victory, I've got a Skyline tuned up to the max and I'm never afraid to use it. Auto Modellista is Capcom at it's best so far but, I think there really should be a continuation with more real locations besides Japan. Still, it is a great game and I strongly Recommend it to any one who enjoys the thrill of racing.
| Ricers dream, carnut's pleasure. | | Pat from Cleveland, OH, USA says (11/Apr/2003): | Any game that has engine swaps, turbo/mechanical upgrades, multiple body kits per vehicle, and licenses from such companies a Tein, Greddy, HKS and several tire companies, is a great game in any car guy's book!! Some of the handling physics are a little exagerated, and there are no German cars. These are the only faults I see. The graphics are a refreshing change from all the other racing games. Online racing is fun, but takes a while to load up.
If you are a car guy, you NEED this game. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go redecorate my garage and repaint my car!! I love this game.
| so,so | | CASHONE from Lost Causes , NM , America says (15/Apr/2003): | I'll say this game has it's up's and downs, the way you can fool around with the replay is cool. but lack of tracks is the down fall.and yes some of the cars are pointless, come on who the hell is gonna want to race a 44hp car when you can race a camaro or somthing? the "few" ups to the game in my veiw are the body kits,no cost to buy or fix it upand some other details. but all in all the game play sucks. you have no control over the car, drifting is way out of hand, and the garage part is stupid. who wants to spend there time in a garage when you can be running a vette!!!
| good but the maker should of put more time into it...... | | miles from united kingdom ,somerset says (8/Aug/2003): | I think the game is well planned out but the maker should of put more time into it so we could see that some of the game looks like it had been a friday afternoon job. Also the stickers should of been chosen carefully cause nowadays you dont see really nice tuned cars with a pesky little sticker on the side you need it to cover the car.one thing i like about this game is that all the makes are genuine, that these makes actually exist and the bodywork exists. The sound quality is okay on the game exept for that commentator guy he gets on your wick a lot of the time.
| Capcom and Sega? Duh. | | Calvin from SF, CA, USA says (7/Apr/2003): | Quirks first : there's no in-race mic system for the American version online- and you can't stay inside the chat rooms after the race to talk about what happened. I really hope Sega updates their server system. But even with the tuned down online experience, this game simply rocks! I'm a hardcore fan of Tokyo Highway Battle but what's this? Public mountain runs?!? Licensed mod parts that include the likes of HKS and Greddy? Engine swapping??? I actually thought this was going to be an online Ridge Racer- but it's a carnut's dream!
