True Crime a Great Game? |
| Brett from B.C Canada says (5/Dec/2003): |
I recently bought true crime for the ps 2 and was pretty pumped until I got home. For the first half an hour I resisted the urge to return the game because I thought the driving control was lame and the game was frustrating at first. But after playing for about an hour and a half I was hooked. The graphics are great(Though I prefer the graphics in vice city, it just has a better style.) The gameplay is easy to pick up and the idea of upgrading everything from the car you drive, to your martial arts, and you weapons and their abilties. I found True Crime to be the best cop game I have played. The cars are very nice too, You can commandeer(Not actually named in the game of course.)a mustang, honda civic, acura nsx, Dodge trucks, SUV's, buses, random truck veichles, vans and assorted cars. People complain about the selection of cars but I found it comparable to Vice City's number of cars othere than gta's secret cars. As for the game, I like the structure of being a cop. You cant just be crazy running around like a manic trying to kill everything in site.(What cop would?) I don't thin GTA:Vice City and true crime shoul d be compared on the gameplay level. GTA is a crimnal game, the point is to cause mayhem, take over the city and pretty much do any damn thing you want. True Crime is a much different game using the simialar game engine, You are a cop trying to find the anwsers to his fathers death and crack a big case, you have to go around stopping crime and getting to the bottom of the crime. The point of playing each game is much different. If you want a game thats filled with mindless killing, lots of dead innocents(Though True Crime alot of the innocent manage to get in the way, other times they hit you when you are running around and you shoot them in the head for being dumb.) and the general point is being a bad guy play GTA:Vice City. IF you are looking for a game more structered filled with kung-fu, being on the good side of the law, as well as many different playing experiences through the different missions(At one point you end up fighting demons and a dragon! No spoilers.) Than True Crime is the game you need.
The only weaknesses I found with True Crime 1.Is with the music, it's great if you are into alot of hip-hop but thankfully you have the option to edit what songs play in the game. 2. True Crime seems short because once you beat it you are left thristing for more, I got and beat this game the week it came out and I am eagerly awaiting a sequel. Buy it and try not to compare to GTA: Vice City as a comparsion as the games themselves play differently.
Graphics 8.5
Music 7
Gameplay 9
Replayability 10
Control 9 (Once you get used to the driving, It's more realistic than GTA and is hard at first.)
Story 8.5
Satisfation 9 (It leaves you beging for more.)

This game kicks ass! |
| Glennon002510 from Massachusetts, USA says (1/Dec/2003): |
This game really caught my attention. This game is The Getaway,Vice City, and every other game with kung-fu. Alone the story lines you'll laugh from what Nick Kang says. The driving is a little hard but you'll get use to it. You never have to play the same mission again. If you don't have this game you should really buy it.
|
Very good in a legit Kinda way!! |
| Nezomega (axel_thrust) from Huddersfield UK says (29/Nov/2003): |
Finding guns, killin the scum, finishing the mission, and save the day...every action game intended. Well instead if playing the vigilante (GTA), try playing a cop learning new martial arts, new weaponary techniques, and earning new vehicles from street racing!! (and at the same time earn your street cred)
The game is simply brilliant at the start and compiles some gamers thirsts by being able to drug search passers-by, hold up your badge at trouble makers and burn around in a stolen car whilst going into slowmo mode shooting your targets in weaker areas as to obtain your better cop status. Now the game has a twist of story as you get to choose how you make your ending, and also earn your new techniques throughout, to achieve the best ending.
Music - COOOOOOOOL
Graphics - Nearly Flawless
Gameplay - Well written (Very Sleek)
Longevity - Choose ya end
i'd get it!

Not Worth 50 bucks |
| Levi from Vandalia, IL USA says (25/Nov/2003): |
this game is so short you can beat it in a rent...what ever anyone does do not pick this one up it's kind of fun but not worth anywhere what you pay it's extremely too short. If i could give it a zero i would. Screw the fifty words I think i've said enough
|
GTA, Driver, The Getaway and Max Payne rolled into one. What more can i Say |
| Ozzie 69 from Manchester, England says (24/Nov/2003): |
On the whole this game is the best around at the moment. It Manages to blend the best bits from GTA Vice City, Driver, The Getaway and Great Slo-Mo Shots Taken Max Payne. The map on the game is massive compared to that on Vice city with all of Los Angeles to Explore. The action in the game is second to none with great gunplay mixed with good hand to hand combat that takes this game to another level compared with GTA. The only real let downs on the game are the driving controls wich can be frustrating at times and yourGood Cop/Bad Cop rating which goes down for every civilian killed leading to poor mission endings if you don't get it back up again. With the various dojos situated around LA that allow you to upgrade your fighting, guns or driving ability + cars there is enough here to keep you playing. With Drug Dealers, Murderers, Car Jackers And prostitutes to bust when your not doing one of the main missions you'll have plenty of fun playing this game so go Buy It!

the true crime is on the streets of la |
| BUFU from Australia says (24/Nov/2003): |
I reckon the game is cool like all the shooting or taking 5 bad guys on at ones thats to cool and its way better than gta or the getaway what i really like is the music and the slow motion shooting that really rocks . when you play the game he say some times some good stuff like from bad boy's II he says bad boys bad boys watch ya gona do ya i gas ist a sick game sorry about my english
|
A great action game, hard 2 BEAT |
| Alex from Australia, Perth says (23/Nov/2003): |
i got this game yesteday and i am very impressed by it. many say that GTA3 and VC are better, but this is a game from a different P.O.V, instead of brakin da law, u r brakin peoples faces who do!!!! It has great gameplay, (even though the car missions can be annoying) and it is filled with a realistic story line with some kick ass kung-fu moves
|
Great Fun, But it Could Have Been Much Better |
| Graeme from Perth, Australia says (23/Nov/2003): |
True Crime the streets of LA is the best Driving Action Adventure game on any console. It is much better than the GTA and The Getaway games as it is set in a massive real life city and the fighting and shooting missions are second to none. The graphics are top notch and the city itself has been very well created. In saying this I was very dissapointed with the driving
segments as there are not enough cars either on the roads or to drive and the controls are terrible. This game could have been a
whole lot better than it is but it is still great fun and a good
game. I was also upset by the fact that there were no real businesses in the game and I would have liked to have at least seen a McDonalds or a KFC store on the LA streets as they are American icons. The game also appears to be un finished and the constant slow down whilst driving is very frustrating and in some parts of the city their are terrible glitches. All in all I
think this is a good game go out and buy it but it wasn't as great as I was expecting it to be. The Snoop Dog mission at the completion of the game is great fun but I think that Driver 3 is
the game that everyone should be waiting for, I think and hope that it will be awesome.

This game is great! |
| Darren Nicholas from Norwich, England says (23/Nov/2003): |
This game is soooooooo much better than all of the grand theft autos. It shows the crime scenes from another perspective. I love the 1 on 1 fighting, I think it is fantastic. The only problem is I completed it in about 5 hours! I couldnt stop playing it! I would reccommend it to anyone who is a fan of action games.

Weak.........over hyped....if you on the ps2 |
| andrew from london,England says (23/Nov/2003): |
the game is over rated. i rented it from block busters for two nights and that is enough. if forced me to put getaway back in my machine which i clocked in january this year!!. The game doesnt have you hooked in your seat like other games ive played. After games like getaway,matrix...your standard becomes very high and this game is considered weak....ps2 peeps we deserve better...i suppose if i live in LA i might have a higher appreciation for this game. i must admit graphics are better than vice city but not getaway. the driving missions get abit repetitive. the game will take you weeks to clock it simply for the fact that you wont be glued to your seat playing it.!!!!!! i hope we have better games for the christmas session. i think gamecube owners will love this game..simply because they havent had better!!!!!!!

Mediocre GTA Clone |
| baugyman from Richmond, VA says (23/Nov/2003): |
You people claiming this game is better than Grand Theft Auto need to cut your cereal intake by half.
This game's only really impressive feature is the map. It's MASSIVE, which to me is a good thing, and it's more like a real city than GTA. It has real streets, and the game makes it easy for you by always telling you what street you're on and what the upcoming streets are. The map is easy to use, as is the mini-map that you have on while you drive. I like that you can drive on the highway as well. The map is a pretty accurate depiction of LA. I even used yahoo driving directions to get from one place to another, and it worked! It's just really cool driving around L.A.
The problem is, the game doesn't really take advantage of that at all. The missions are boring and repetitive. They consist of either racing from one point to another, TAILING somebody (really annoying), being chased, fighting hand to hand (boring and easy), or shooting it out. Not one of the missions takes advantage of the LA setting or a big city setting. You could be anywhere. Half the time you're friggin inside anyway. That's another thing - you don't get to go inside a building unless you're in the middle of a mission, unlike Vice City where you can visit malls, mansions, strip clubs, etc.
The story line is like a really, really bad cop movie. It's like they spent twenty minutes coming up with it. Vice City has a fun story which is pretty well put together for a video game. True Crime just doesn't compare.
Finally, it's nowhere near as fun to just roam the city. I enjoyed exploring Beverly Hills and Brentwood and places like that, but it got old fast. Solving crimes is fun for about half an hour. Frisking people and trampling on the civil rights of the game's citizenry is probably the most fun thing you can do in the game, and that's not saying much.
I think the soundtrack works, but if you can't stand hip hop you'll have to keep that mute button handy.
The game just doesn't have the character that the GTA games have. It will be forgotten in two months.

All round great game! |
| Steven S from England, Bedfordshire says (23/Nov/2003): |
Come on, how good is it to have your name on your number plate!
Nice touch that im sure many other games will copy. Shooting the exhausts of cars to make them blow is wicked and the graphics of the explosions are the best ive ever seen in a PS2 game.
Shooting from your car in slow motion is a great touch too. You can actually get some 1 behind you by using a handbrake turn and at the same time shooting in slow motion. Just like Mission Imposible 2 on the motorbike. Aiming for their heads in the cars to kill them instantly, realisticly.
better than GTA slightly. Graphics are great, sound and music is the best it could be. Only problem is its a bit short, but you will be playing it over and over again anyways.
Alot of detail has been taken to name every street you go on, how cool is that?
Shooting criminals in the legs is what gets you a good rating otherwise running them down or shooting them in the head would get you a bad cop rating. But trying each out is good fun. But killing too many innocent people will get you taken down by SWAT teams. So watch your step.
This game is everything of GTA status and more. More meaning kung fu, slow motion diving and shooting, 2 different weapons in each hand, real cars (like a Ferrari F50, Dodge Viper or BMW) nice hand 2 hand combat, cool soundtrack with hiphop and rock tunes and some classics, that will leave you not wanting to get out of your car! Also some great tunes that get you going when you are in some important fights, like N.E.R.D - rockstar and lapdance.
Get this game, dont rent it. It saves you a expensive trip to LA and saves you from going to jail!
True Crime is as true as crime gets!

Not bad, but stick with Gta! |
| brent from BC Canada says (21/Nov/2003): |
For anybody out there wondering if this game can come compete on gta's level, well it just can't. Don't get me wrong, its not a bad game, but it just didn't live up to the hype. For one an 8 year could beat this game in 2-3 sittings. There just wasn't enough things to discover or do in this game like you can gta in roam mode. Theres like 8 different cars driving around the city, the graphics aren't that great and the crime patrol missions are most of the time boring and repitative. Some nice fighting tho and cool things like frisking people and arresting them but other then thats its just an 7/10 shooter/fighting game. Rent this for like 3 days and take it back. Trust me thats all you need.

Good Game Too Many Flaws |
| Rosario from New York says (21/Nov/2003): |
I thought this game was good, but I think alot of people would agree with me on this review. There are some Flaws in this game that are very annoying and should have been fixed before all the Hype. For instance: When your driving the game stutters. There are way too many Autosaves. There are not enough Cars or Guns to choose from. When you get out of the Car and take care of a Crime
and then get back into your car and drive 2 Blocks then there is another Crime. The one Mission when you had to take care of the 2 guys in the white sports car by losing them, personally I wanted to kill them instead, so when I did the car Blew up and the driver was still in the burning car so I fired some shots and Guess What? He is still sitting in the Burning Car. There were not alot of places to explore, all those buildings and stores and you just can't go in them. Last Thing: The Game is way too SHORT for $50
|
it's the best god damn game i have ever played |
| ryanmay from Gainesville, Florida, U.S.A says (21/Nov/2003): |
i rented it and beat it fast it is a short game but... it rocks
i used a cheat that you type j1mm as your name and hold R1 and
L1 when you do ok and you will be a corpse walking around and it
is fun to kill civilians but it is bad so i just stop street
crimes and get gun upgrades
|
This IS AWSOME |
| Greg from courntryside IL usa says (20/Nov/2003): |
I played this game it ROCKS!! it only took me 2 days tho. I say iTS WAY better than the gta's! I think iT has to be the best game ever by Far! The cars are pimpinG! the moves rock id defnatly buy it again and again! And it's really hard to imprees me with a action game! And the city rules!
|
weak |
| A gamer says (16/Nov/2003): |
"True Crime: Streets of LA" is basically nothing more than GTA done with poor controls and a cheesy story line. Graphics are totally weak. I mean the boards remind me of the THPS series. Don't get me wrong I love the Tony Hawk games but I don't think the graphics translate well to an "action" game such as this. The game does give you some freedom, but its restricted. For example, if you shoot somebody or accidentely run over a pedestrian you lose "karma points". I guess I just enjoy the freedom of GTA. Doing what I want when I want without fear of losing some stupid points. Trust me if you are thinking about buying this game, rent it first.

gc fans finally get a gta like game |
| Rob from Northport n.y. says (15/Nov/2003): |
this game is by far the best game i ever played.and the first realistic gta like game to come out for gc.gc single platform owners now what i am talking about we had to drool over our friends with ps2's gta3 and gta vice city . now we have our own finally, the wait was well worth it, the gamplay and graphics are awsome.there is a great variety of cars and guns. it also has an awsome sound track including snoop dog jay z and 50 cent.the streets of la are very accurate to the actual streets in la.streets of la really combines fighting and action both with fire fights and hand to hand combat.one of the best things about this game is that you can cruise around and aresst hookers fighting thugs serial killers bank robbers.the only thing i wasnt satisfied was the controll lay out on gc everything else was amazing.the graphics by far rae more realistic than any game in the gta series.nick's expressions are more kick ass also and cursing is more present than in all gtas .well well congradulations gc owners we have graduated pre school .all i can say about this game is yippeee . hopefully we will see more games like this on gc soon

A nice mix of Vice City and the Getaway with some kung-fu thrown in |
| Tru_Playa from London, England says (15/Nov/2003): |
When we first stuck this game on it seemed like the best game we'd played for ages, if not ever! The mix of driving some bad motors with the quality kung fu fighting missions is a blend well appreciated with my mates.
Having finished the game I can honestly say I was a little gutted. Not because the game was a let down, but because I was gutted that it was over. What was I gonna play now? Having said that we did put some serious hours in all in all, and we got some pretty skilled players, and overall Id say DEFINATELY play this game.
Put it this way, Im online now, on this site, because I am looking up a cheat I got for this game! Even though weve finished it, its still got me a little...
