This game kicks ass! |
| Glennon002510 from Massachusetts, USA says (1/Dec/2003): |
This game really caught my attention. This game is The Getaway,Vice City, and every other game with kung-fu. Alone the story lines you'll laugh from what Nick Kang says. The driving is a little hard but you'll get use to it. You never have to play the same mission again. If you don't have this game you should really buy it.

Possibly The WORST Game I've Ever Played.... |
| Brendee from Houston,Texas says (29/Dec/2003): |
My gooodness.....you would think by the way it looks on TV that this game would actully be fun....heheh they sure did trick us! This was the lamest game i have EVER played, i am sad to say. True Crimes:Streets of LA has nothing on all the GTAs and Vice City. Honestly, did they think they could compete? Well i have to give SOME credit....the graphics were good and on a scale of 1-10 for fun, id give it a 3. I am a girl, and i beat this game in 2 days. The missions were way too easy and there was just not enough to do. Hopefully, there WONT be a sequel to this piece of crap. Because if there is, I wont be wasting my money on it.

Good Game Too Many Flaws |
| Rosario from New York says (21/Nov/2003): |
I thought this game was good, but I think alot of people would agree with me on this review. There are some Flaws in this game that are very annoying and should have been fixed before all the Hype. For instance: When your driving the game stutters. There are way too many Autosaves. There are not enough Cars or Guns to choose from. When you get out of the Car and take care of a Crime
and then get back into your car and drive 2 Blocks then there is another Crime. The one Mission when you had to take care of the 2 guys in the white sports car by losing them, personally I wanted to kill them instead, so when I did the car Blew up and the driver was still in the burning car so I fired some shots and Guess What? He is still sitting in the Burning Car. There were not alot of places to explore, all those buildings and stores and you just can't go in them. Last Thing: The Game is way too SHORT for $50

Not as good as vice city!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Liam Knight from Liverpool (England) says (6/Jan/2004): |
i only brought the game 2 day so fare it is gd but the missions arnt as gd as GTA. the way u drive isnt as gd either an the cars some of them look rubbish. but overall it is a gd game but isnt worth the money.
some ppl say it is 2 short hopefully it isnt cause if i complete in tha nxt few days im takin it bck.
since i only got it 2 day i think it boss!!!!!!! but wat i hav read from a few of these reviews it aint up 2 vice city standards

Not bad, but stick with Gta! |
| brent from BC Canada says (21/Nov/2003): |
For anybody out there wondering if this game can come compete on gta's level, well it just can't. Don't get me wrong, its not a bad game, but it just didn't live up to the hype. For one an 8 year could beat this game in 2-3 sittings. There just wasn't enough things to discover or do in this game like you can gta in roam mode. Theres like 8 different cars driving around the city, the graphics aren't that great and the crime patrol missions are most of the time boring and repitative. Some nice fighting tho and cool things like frisking people and arresting them but other then thats its just an 7/10 shooter/fighting game. Rent this for like 3 days and take it back. Trust me thats all you need.

Crappy |
| chaos effect from in your closet says (27/Jan/2004): |
True Crime: Streets of L.A.
This game is trashy. There's no way around it. Waiting for it to come up was similiar to waiting for a big steak at a resturuant. I thought I knew what I was getting, I was so excited, but then I got it. Going back to the resturaunt thing, finally you see the big steak coming for you. All of a sudden the waited grabs the steak and sticks it straight up his a$$. Now he takes it out and throws it on the table. Thats what it was like when I started playing True Crime. I was expecting GTA where you play as a cop. In a way that was true except THE DAMN COP IS WORSE THAN THE CRIMINALS! Seriously what kind of cop starts randomly shooting civilians? Atleast in GTA you had an excuse, in GTA you're a career criminal. That leads in some way or another to the story. You play as some "loose cannon" cop who was fired for disorderly conduct who spits out cheesy one-liners. I couldn't stand the guy. Just playing as him was annoying. He was so obnoxious. That made it annoying. The whole game is one big cliche. His dad goes missing, son joins LAPD to follow in footsteps and somehow gets wrapped up in something beyond his control that his father was involved in 50 years ago. Maybe things wouldn't have been so bad if the gameplay was actually fun. The driving is messed up. All cars have extremely bad handling. There are also two other parts of this failed hybrid experiment. Next there is hand-to-hand kungfu which is just pointless button-mashing. Then there is gunplay. It's just as $#< remove me > at !ty. There's also no real fun when not on missions (I'm not saying that there was any fun to begin with). When your not on a mission you can answer criminal calls but they're usually one of 5 different scenarios in different locations (Boring). If you would happen to go on a killing spree it wouldn't be that fun, you're a cop. Now graphics. The graphics are really choppy at times. Thats pretty much it. I would say don't even bother putting up the money to rent this trash. I can't believe people like this game.
I say 0/10 and my word is law.
P.S.Vice City is 100% Better, and you better not write back.

Great Game Play!! |
| Justin C. from Los Angeles, Ca says (20/Sep/2003): |
One of the best games iv'e ever played!!! I got the demo in my Playstation underground magazine. the demo gives you a taste in what the game will be like. If you live in L.A. or know something about Los Angeles then you will get the scenery such as Pershing Square and Union station. Graphics are amazing and I have already reserved my copy with the free bonus DVD. The game is equivilent to the Grand theft Auto series and has that same sort of feel to it. Grand Theft Auto just dosen't compare to this game in size really. I mean Los Angeles is a reall hard city to make. Let alone Downtown Los Angeles. Im am not sure if there is public transit but every time you pass a street by you will see the street name displayed on the top of the screen. The street you are on will appear grayish under the cross-street. I am a very "hardcore" gamer i put in seven plus hours of gameplay each day with other friends,i hate the word hardcore!!! Anyway reserve you copy now this game will sell fast. Grat graphics and the gameplay is really nice. check it Out!

GTA: Still King |
| David from Cleveland, OH, USA says (9/Nov/2003): |
I bought into the hype, this was to be the game that ripped GTA out of my system, so I dropped a cool fifty and started gamin.
For a while, I was a believer, even an advocate, readily telephoning those I know to sing the graces of my new found world, but, sadly after just a few short hours, roaming the streets of LA, I was left feeling hopeless, heading back to south FL.
Where did it go wrong? What demons (or fire breathing dragons?) haunt this poor town? Perhaps my camera man was drinkin, or maybe my new magical gun that never runs out of bullets just weighted me down. Perhaps it was the fact that I could not read my map. It was just too big for the small part of LA I needed to see.
Being good wasn't all it was cracked up to be.
Oh well, I guess I just need to stay on my side of the law, so long SO-CAL, my yacht awaits my return.

An inferior GTA clone |
| Matt J from Melbourne, VIC, Australia says (8/Mar/2004): |
Although, in its own right, True Crime is a decent game, but it falls way behind GTA: Vice City. It's humour is just not funny, its gameplay is not as fun and it's graphics lack atmosphere.
Graphics: 7/10. Good, and in some ways better than GTA in realism, but lack atmosphere and depth.
Sound: 6/10. Average, with no good songs or effects. WAY below GTA, especially Vice City with its DTS sound.
Gameplay: 5/10. Just not fun. Especially the driving. Nowhere near as intuitive or fun as GTA.
Lifespan: 7/10. Has a largish lifespan but is too linear. Again inferior to Vice City.
Fun Factor: 4/10. Just isn't fun for some reason.
Originality: 1/10. An inferior copy of the GTA series.
Value: 5/10. Average.
Overall this is a goodish game, but by comparing it to GTA, in particular to Vice City, it just seems a bit crappy.

Has nothing new, some great ideas but hideously underdeveloped. |
| (no name given) I wonder why? from Exeter,England says (12/Jan/2004): |
The game was a great disapointment to me,and the only ps2 game I have ever considered pretending its faulty for a refund. The scenery and graphics in general are fantastic but these don't make up for the poor, unvaried fighting, shooting and driving sequences which are tiresome and seem rushed.Street crimes and good/bad cop ratings seem a good idea at first but this feeling doesnt last as they dont really result in anything but a slightly different ending that doesnt seem worth sacrificing my time for and Im a dedicated completist. The story and characters are cliche and will only appeal to fans of van-dam films(only the stupid fans)Plus the fact the main character is a $#< remove me > at !y,selfish and arrogant bi-product of all those oh so terribly written action flicks.
Im not a big hip-hop fan but the soundtrack works very well and adds to the game.
The lifespan of the game, 7 levels and practically no difficulty (apart from the odd accendental moment on the part of the makers)will last a casual gamer a few hours and is the nail in this particularly well furnished coffin.Overall the makers have not chosen their priorities correctly choosing graphics and map design over gameplay, story and some interesting but underdeveloped ideas, but don't get me wrong the game is above average, but when youve played the likes of GTA and the getaway, even as far back as the driver series you expect a hell of alot more,Ultimatly True crime streets of LA leaves me wondering what could have been.

Worst $69 I ever spent |
| Super Gaijin from Charlottetown, PEI says (12/Dec/2003): |
I could've bought myself a carton of smokes and killed myself with lung cancer and it would've been more entertaining than True Crime: Streets Of LA.
Like, what the hell were they thinking? Well, I suppose the question should be "Were they thinking at all?".
The driving physics are reminiscent of pushing a dinky car around with a popsicle stick, the fighting is some of the worst yet (Final fight had a better fight engine), and the shooting was....well....mediocre.
The only thing I enjoyed was cruising around, putting the game in bullet time while I aim, and then shoot out some tires and the gas tank sometimes on innocent drivers. The missions were horridly simple and one-dimensional and the game was WAY too short.
If I hadn't have spent the last of my paycheque that week on it, then I would've snapped the CD in half and smashed the case viciously with a frozen aluminum baseball bat. Then I would've walked over to the designer's office and repeated the process on his face.
Unfortunately, I had to sell it back off to save at least some money. Now someone else gets the chance to either prove their stupidity by liking it (which the guy at Microplay did quite well to my face) or they get the pleasure of smashing it.
It's a vile, disgusting, pile of crap that should never have been conceived and only a complete tool would like it.
Case closed!

True Crap:Ass of LA |
| SEXPISTOLS from Nowhere says (18/Mar/2004): |

Not Worth 50 bucks |
| Levi from Vandalia, IL USA says (25/Nov/2003): |
this game is so short you can beat it in a rent...what ever anyone does do not pick this one up it's kind of fun but not worth anywhere what you pay it's extremely too short. If i could give it a zero i would. Screw the fifty words I think i've said enough
|
playing on the game too much will lead to boredom |
| Si from Staffordshire, England says (27/Dec/2003): |
True Crime for me looked great. I thought maybe that this game could be like gta 3 yet the other way around. Instead of being a bad guy, you would get the chance to play a cop. Yet when i sat down and actually played it, it is no where near gta 3 one of my favourite games at the moment. It was fairly entertaining gameplay i suppose, yet i got bored quite quickly. In my oppinion they could of spent more time on missions, storline and advanced the gameplay a liitle more. Not a bad game in the end, but not a great one either!

Weak.........over hyped....if you on the ps2 |
| andrew from london,England says (23/Nov/2003): |
the game is over rated. i rented it from block busters for two nights and that is enough. if forced me to put getaway back in my machine which i clocked in january this year!!. The game doesnt have you hooked in your seat like other games ive played. After games like getaway,matrix...your standard becomes very high and this game is considered weak....ps2 peeps we deserve better...i suppose if i live in LA i might have a higher appreciation for this game. i must admit graphics are better than vice city but not getaway. the driving missions get abit repetitive. the game will take you weeks to clock it simply for the fact that you wont be glued to your seat playing it.!!!!!! i hope we have better games for the christmas session. i think gamecube owners will love this game..simply because they havent had better!!!!!!!
|
weak |
| A gamer says (16/Nov/2003): |
"True Crime: Streets of LA" is basically nothing more than GTA done with poor controls and a cheesy story line. Graphics are totally weak. I mean the boards remind me of the THPS series. Don't get me wrong I love the Tony Hawk games but I don't think the graphics translate well to an "action" game such as this. The game does give you some freedom, but its restricted. For example, if you shoot somebody or accidentely run over a pedestrian you lose "karma points". I guess I just enjoy the freedom of GTA. Doing what I want when I want without fear of losing some stupid points. Trust me if you are thinking about buying this game, rent it first.
|
ok but not that great. |
| Louis Bonin from Pheonix, Arizona USA says (1/Jan/2004): |
The game was all right I didnt mind beating it but it was way to short. It isnt that fun after beating it either because theres nothing much to do only cruising and doing the really easy missions. I like the slowmo its awsome and the weapons but there wasnt enough ammo when you pick one up and then you have your own little pistole that has infinite ammo but I prefer a AK or two MP3 or something. I also think that the LA is to big I like it small but not that small enough so I can memorize the place like I could with gta.
|
Very disappointing |
| Alex Kessler from Chicago, USA says (13/Nov/2003): |
I was excited to play this game ever since I heard about it last spring. People were saying it was going to be better than GTA3 or GTAVC, but its not even close. The total freedom to wonder the city I was expecting wasn't at all what I had hoped, you do get to roam the city, but you need to be very careful not to lower your good cop rating (if you want to make the game last for more than 2 hours) the gameplay was just about as linear as it can get and there were only about 7 different cars roaming the streets. The missions werent nonlinear at all, and you often progress directly into the next. The "street crimes" were very repititive and the camera views during fights could be very frustrating at times. All in all, this game is just your average shooter, and if you are desperate to play it I suggest renting it because it only took about 4 days to beat it 100%

Mediocre GTA Clone |
| baugyman from Richmond, VA says (23/Nov/2003): |
You people claiming this game is better than Grand Theft Auto need to cut your cereal intake by half.
This game's only really impressive feature is the map. It's MASSIVE, which to me is a good thing, and it's more like a real city than GTA. It has real streets, and the game makes it easy for you by always telling you what street you're on and what the upcoming streets are. The map is easy to use, as is the mini-map that you have on while you drive. I like that you can drive on the highway as well. The map is a pretty accurate depiction of LA. I even used yahoo driving directions to get from one place to another, and it worked! It's just really cool driving around L.A.
The problem is, the game doesn't really take advantage of that at all. The missions are boring and repetitive. They consist of either racing from one point to another, TAILING somebody (really annoying), being chased, fighting hand to hand (boring and easy), or shooting it out. Not one of the missions takes advantage of the LA setting or a big city setting. You could be anywhere. Half the time you're friggin inside anyway. That's another thing - you don't get to go inside a building unless you're in the middle of a mission, unlike Vice City where you can visit malls, mansions, strip clubs, etc.
The story line is like a really, really bad cop movie. It's like they spent twenty minutes coming up with it. Vice City has a fun story which is pretty well put together for a video game. True Crime just doesn't compare.
Finally, it's nowhere near as fun to just roam the city. I enjoyed exploring Beverly Hills and Brentwood and places like that, but it got old fast. Solving crimes is fun for about half an hour. Frisking people and trampling on the civil rights of the game's citizenry is probably the most fun thing you can do in the game, and that's not saying much.
I think the soundtrack works, but if you can't stand hip hop you'll have to keep that mute button handy.
The game just doesn't have the character that the GTA games have. It will be forgotten in two months.
