Had potential - but they blew it on this one. | | David from Denver (NC) USA says (28/Oct/2004): | The premise behind Driv3r was good, interesting storyline & all, but the vehicle just doesn't carry the load in this case. You can have fun with it - the fact they made the drive-around part (where you can learn your way around a city, operation of various vehicles, weaponry etc.) into a progressive game wherein finding & killing 10 "Timmy Vermicelli's" (a thinly veiled fun-poke at GTAVC's "Tommy Vercetti") unlocks an absolutely insane '18-wheeler killfest mode' was a nice touch....but there's no end to it! Once you get to that point, they just keep coming....and when you discover how easy it is to just sidestep 'em & blow the two Timmys inside away (only one is armed), it quickly becomes boring. Also, some of the places the Timmys are hiding are ridiculous - not places where you'd go in normal travels; it's almost as if the programmers intended for you to have to look up cheats to use. Oh yes, when you kill a Timmy, run over to his body (quickly - before he dissolves) & take a closeup look. Water wings? *LOL* Another 'poke' at GTAVC. (Tommy can't swim, remem?)
The game is buggy as hell - the worst I've ever seen in a PS2 game. Frequent game lockups where the graphics freeze & only recourse is to reboot the system; not to mention the & 'impossible situations' where your character easily gets into places he can't get out of....e.g. falling between a dumpster & a wall & he can't turn, jump or get out - and you lose all progress you've made in that mission.
The missions (the main game) - I've noticed a pattern...first one mission will play as you might expect, with a so-so level of difficulty that might take you 3 or 4 tries. Then the next mission is ridiculously difficult. If you DO luck thru it (and in too many cases, luck & not skill is the only way to pull it off), the following mission is stupidly easy - you finish it in 5 minutes & wonder what happened; is there another sub-level coming up? (the game has a few of those too.) Case in point - in Nice where you've gotta get to Carlita & save her from the truck running her down....then you gotta chase down & kill Fabienne. I've literally burnt HOURS, must've tried 500 times or more....I just can't do it. And I'm no slacker with the buttons either. In fact, this one mission is the very reason I'm here - trying to find a way around it. All the complaints these other reviewers have made about light poles crashing you, come out here. They're very skinny, and if that didn't make 'em hard enuff to see, it's also at nighttime! Her car is faster than yours...accelerates like a rocket. If you do get close (gain ground on the turns - if she's not so far ahead that you don't see her make 'em!)....she'll pull away from you in an instant. But what is so especially frustrating - and infuriating - is how the game will lock up your brakes & spin you out, proclaiming "Mission failed - Fabienne got away" and she's about a half-block away, in plain sight, with the big red arrow over her car pointing to it!! If she gets a little ahead of you, you don't get the CHANCE to chase her down! What the "F" kinda fair gameplay is THAT?
I can empathise with the other reviewer that said he'd never thrown his hand control so much as with this game. *LOL* that was funny. But believe me, I understand!
But this has gotten too long...so rather than go on, bottom line is this thing does indeed exhibit much suckage. The reviewers who've suggested renting before buying - that's good advice. I just hope you don't get hooked on the few good qualities before you've had a few opps to test your hand control against a wall too. These people who are telling you they 'finished the game in only 10 hours' etc? Not without using cheats they didn't! I'll give you that on non-PS2 platforms, maybe....can't say as I haven't used 'em. But on PS2's - yeah, right....and geese don't $#< remove me > at !.
| A GOOD ADDITION TO THE SERIES. | | RandyOrton/JohnCena fann! from West Midlands,Britain. says (27/May/2005): | I have played this game but i don`t have it.Its great to have Tanner back after 5 years since they fired off Driver 2,which was the very first 3-Dimensional(3D) driving game where you got to steal cars of the civilians or 911 crew(Ambulance,Fire-Truck or POLICE car) but on Driver 3 you get cars, motorbikes, boats, trucks ect..Ever since Driver 2 landed on PSONE the people who developed those 2D Grand Theft Auto games(RockStar-games) made Grand Theft Auto III and a year later Grand Theft Auto:Vice City and these 2 games fixed all the problems that were on Driver 2,which were dropped graphics, solveble glitches, and better car physics like you can now see through the windows but R* never made as good car damage effects or made crashes sound realistic.any ways Driver 3 beats it two predcessors(Driver 1&Driver 2) and in my oppinion beats GTA3/VC because of the realism the aging Atari and Reflections made 3 real cities Miami again(this was also the first city in Driver 1) but this time more of the city and better looks then the 6-year old original Nice,France and Istanbul,Turkey and i never forget that all the Driver games are set in the 1970`s which most gamers forget. bye
p.s. i hope Atari and Reflections make DRIVER 4(fingers crossed) they will solve the glitches, add aircraft like planes, helicoptors, gliders and some more 911 aircraft like Police-chopper,Army planes/choppers,Air-Ambulances.
more cars would be great(i am not moaning about the lot we have already got)
more motorbike additions
and ANY thing that will make other reviews be more proud of the Driver games,so Atari and Reflections(who might never read this) play the GTA games see what the other reviewers that are not pleased with on Driver 3 and make Driver 4(if they make it) supierior to the R* GTA games, keep Tanner as the main charicter and heres the cities which would be nice Chicago,New York,Rio and London,England so Driver 4 can be sure-fire success. bye and sorry my review is long.
| Its a Good Game But Not 3 Years of Work | | A gamer from Fairfax/Virginia/USA says (1/Jul/2005): | The Grapics in this game are a lot better than the first. Missions are hard but possable. But the game dosent seem like 3 years went into it. I wated 3 years for the game to come out and when I got I for 50 bucks and played it I just about s*** my self to see the gameplay it was bad. What pissed me off the most was with a 18 wheeler at full speed you could not nock down a light poleand thats dissopointing for a game that took 3 years to come out. What I liked about the game is that the missions a chalenge and yes I beat the game. and what I didnot like wat what I said befor. And enother thing I did not like was so many glitches and it freezes up consntly. And some more good things when your driveing a sadan the car feels, handles, and has speeds of a sadan and a sports car feels, handles, and has speeds of a sports car. Facts- there are boats but no helocopters. There are 10 timmy guys in every city and theres 3 cityes they are very hard to find tho. when you have unlocked all of them there will be 3 awsome modes you have unlocked 1 mode per city hope you can find them all. I know this is true because I have found all timmy guys and have played the modes. ther fun but I wont tell you what they are you have to find that out your self. And a fact about the timmy guys there only found in free mode and a hint there places where some of your missions took place. But there very hard to kill. Theres a few secret cars in each city to. So its Relly up to you to buy it my advice is to It gives a great chalange. so I hope this review is hlepful to you and try to keep it in mind when you buy this game. Happy Playing
| A Unexpected Disapointment | | Someone from tampa, Fl. USA says (12/Jul/2004): | Driv3r is supposed to be greater than GTA3 vice city (according to most game magz). Swimming is new, long awaited in a game like this and fun. Fighting one on one isnt to great. When fighting you can only shoot (and not kick the hell out of someone?). Fighting sucks in this game. Missions are entertaining to an extent. Although, the missions do seem quite impossible. Its almost like you have to perfectly plan out when to turn , how to turn, which directions, and what route to take when doing a chase. Each mission took me atleast 5 - 15 tries just to get it. As far as flying helicopters, planes, gore, fighting, going anywhere you want, and everything else thats entertaining goes; play GTA3. screw driv3r. (game makers need to make a game where you can go into any building and any room, hit someone with anything around, swim, fly air crafts, any such other LIFE LIKE THINGS. The Cheats should be things like , flying like superman, cussing someone out, changing shoes to steel toed face stompers and blah. screw it let me make the game) ~~Opinion of someone.
| big disappointment | | andy from Belfast says (5/Aug/2004): | i know were all the money went with this game, on the ads and hollywood moviestars salery's, in a nutshell this game is bad, repeatative and cheap, the animation is poor, storyline weak, and gameplay rubbish. I would advise anyone to avoid this game, I've had it a week now and I'm gonna trade it in, it's annoying because it was the biggest hyped game ever, I won't be buying Driver 4.
1. the ferrari sounds like the car on the old arcade game Pole Position, i know thats a small point but the games called Driver surely they could've gotten that right.
2. the AI of the baddies is pathetic
3. tanner on foot is terrible
4. sometimes you can shoot the villians through a wall
5. controling the car from the outside viewpoint is like steering a ship
6. some of the levels are unessesarily difficult, to make up for a bad game
eg. I'm now a fair way into the game now and I find myself repeating the
same basic pursuit for the 3rd time.(different city, different car but same
level)
I could go on but I won't, don't buy it, it's bad.
| i had way higher expectations for driver 3 | | carl johnson from San Fran, USA says (23/Jun/2004): | i was expecting a way better, more in-depth game, from the minute it started i was disapointed, how the opening sequence begins with tanner moving very choppy in wierd ways, i think the character animation is not fluent at all... along with most all other animation in the game. i think vice city and gta 3 top this game by miles, i cant wait for san andreas, that will be the game to look forward to. i found the first mission i was just running around having fun, all good cept for the choppyness, then the second mission i was forced to follow this cop car along and i heard thst driv3r was supposed to have one of the best driving engines but every car i drove seemed rear wheel drive and very easy to spin out, thats fine on some cars but... i mean... all the cars? the motor cycles are ok, hard to control tho. shooting seems a bit odd with the aiming system, looking for cheats now to see what other guna they have stuck in, all in all, i was very disapointed. san andreas all the way!
| What the! | | Jake from Canada says (27/Apr/2005): | First of all i beat the game and they make fun of tommy becauces he cant swim ha! god they should shut up they can't even make a game with out people dropping from the sky or cop cars cheaply droping onto your car we waited 3 years and i got all exited then when i bought it i was sooooooo mad at them the cars dont even go fast like if your on the level "The chase" Your car has no grip at all or control and if you cetch up to her and ram her car your the who flips not her its like her wheels are super glued to the road you cant flip her car you need to chase her it took me 5 week to get past it i think this game is a HUGE dissapointment to me! Like come on the story line is ok until it get up to the last map its annoying and a waste of money if should be $5.oo instead of 50 its like they just worked on it for 1 year then stopped and said "OOOH we worked on it for 3 years so you better buy it! they should just shut up and a tip to them you should have stopped at driver 2!
| GTA MAKES DRIVER 3 LOOK LIKE A AMETAUR | | Eh$@n from London says (29/Jun/2004): | I was really dissapointed when i played this game. They could of made this game so much better. The gameplay graphics are just poor. The gameplay isn't bad although it will take quite long to get used to riding the bikes. Your lifespam is good and there are lots of medi kits for you to use. But there are some good things aswell such as trying to find secret vehicles in take a ride and killing civilians and trying to get away from the cops. Some of the missions are really anoying, but the most anoying thing about driver 3 is the lamp posts. You can't even knock them down like in Grand theft auto. Every time i'm about 2 finish a mission the lamp post comes in my way and i have to start all over. I just feel like braking the game. They could of made the music better and they should of allowed you to be able to shoot out of your vehicle in take a ride. I do not recommend this game to impatient gamers and i stil think Grand theft auto is much better!
| DRIV3R | | A gamer from Arnhem, Netherlands says (10/Jul/2004): | I bought driver 3 a few weeks ago. As a lot of people i was very excited to see how the game would turn out. Well in my case it was dissappointing. I first started playing the free roam mode to get used to the controls and the handling of the cars. While I was playing, it occurred to me that the light during daytime was very bright and after a few hours started irritating my eyes, so I couldn't focus on the game. Another thing that was annoying was the fact that I couldn't knock over the lanterns, so after taking a tight corner I often crash against those annoying things, which can be very irritating in a chase..... Also very annoying was when I tried to enter a car and mr. tanner just doesn't follow my orders and keeps standing next to it.
But in total the game is quite amusing and it has a nice story-line in it. The reason that the game looks so dissapointing could be too high expectations from the gamer.
| Take it or Leave it | | a gamer from nottingham says (31/Mar/2005): | What can i say for the driver series well they have definatly come a long way since they first brought the series out, they have improved on the graphics and the sound and iam afriad thats about it.the worst thing which i found on the game was the controls i just hate the charecter controls and the driving controls.I also found that this game can keep you emused in the take a ride mode entering buildings and i liked the idea that you had to find 10 timmy's in each city but come on the missions are to easy and i know that some of you out there found it hard and very frustraiting(babies).
iam not a huge fan of the driver series i perfere the getaway.
A summary to my fews in this game are that it has no signs of realism in and where are the areoplanes if you could fly this would make me give this game a higher score but i'am afraid that this game is RUBBISH!!!!!!
| Piece of poop | | Nick Poretta from USA says (2/Jul/2004): | From the minute i picked this gameup i was amazed, until the opening cut scene ended. This game blows!!! I hate the fact that the main character is gay and he only talks to other men. Also, your cars run out of gas. I hate that. As soon as i get going, the car rolls to a stop and I die. Then it says Gameover and i have to start the whole gameover again! Its not like GTA vice city where when u die u go back to a hospital or something. No. Instead, u start the whole game over. This is especially annoying on the last level. It only takes 1 hour to get to the last level and its impossible. Yes, thats correct, the game can be beaten in about 1 hour. My opinion... IF YOU BUY THIS GAME U JUST WASTED $70 AND A PIECE OF CRAP IS NOW PART OF YOUR PS2 COLLECTION!!!!! FOREVER!!!!! ...unlessu threw the game out like i did.
| driver 3 | | kenny from Tennessee,USA says (3/Jul/2004): | I just bought driver3. I was very excited when i brought it home i went straight to my ps2 and popped it in then one of biggest dissappointments of my life came when this game started. You cant even go through light poles which is very annoying ,and gun to gun combat on this game just sucks. The missions on this game are fairly easy except for a few. The best part of this game compared to gta is SWIMMING. That is the best idear for a game like this in a long time. Gta when you hit the water youre dead in this game you just jump out and swim to a ladder but thats the only way out of the water. you cant get out on the dock you have to find a ladder or steps that lead into the water. but overall this was a dissapointing game. i strongly recomend you rent it before you buy it, some people might like it but i dont.
| Unnecessarily hard | | Bubba from Texas says (2/Aug/2004): | Hey, If the game is to easy it's not fun. However, the missions here are almost impossible. I'm stuck trying to kill Gator. I'm on try # 107. I'll admit, I'm persistant but there comes a time when enough is enough. Now I know why kids are so violent these days. It's because games like this frustrate the hell out of them and me. I'd love to meet the game designer so I can punch him in the mouth. Maybe if there were a cheat code I could use at least then perhaps I wouldn't hate this game so much. I could use it to get past an impossible mission so I could continue to enjoy the game. Not this game, not one cheat code I found worked. The game designers hate game players in this game. Definately save your money and buy something that's a little easier on the nerves.
| Looks Cool, But...... | | John from USA says (31/Oct/2004): | SO MANY GLITCHES! SO MANY GLITCHES! SO MANY GLITCHES!!!!!!!!! I can't even begin on how many glitches there are in this game.. To me this game was put out without having it "touched up". SO many things go wrong, cars coming out of the sky out of nowhere, trees and power poles floating in mid air not in the ground, people getting stuck in the graphics, you can even push cars through the buildings. VERY slow refresh time, SO MUCH MORE. I have even found MANY places in each city where you can fall through the graphics and into the bottom of the city. I just wish this game could have had more time to finish. I am not sure if the XBOX version is any different as far as all the glitches. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME UNTIL THE PRICE DROPS TO $19.99!!!!! It is definitely not worth $49.99!
| this game... | | Elliot from Brusly, Louisiana says (10/Jan/2005): | is really hard, Nice is better than Miami in my opinion, I love France. Some of the missions in Nice were easier then the Miami ones to me(i had a hard time killing gator). But I can't get passed the mission where you go to the Boathouse with dubois. theres this room with a forklift, I don't know what i am supposed to do, they(jericho and calita) took my weapons so i cant kill the guards, the bridge is broken, am I supposed to use the forklift to pick up boxes and make a bridge? cause the gaurds shoot the boxes off...at first i try to be calm and then i do it fine and get to the other side, but as soon as i get there the gaurds shoot me and i die, and i get really angry. I usually don't get mad at games when I lose but this mission is impossible to beat...
| Good, but not great | | William J. Russell from Birmingham, England says (3/Jul/2004): | upon playing driver 3, i do believe that it is far better than the first two although they cud do with improving the handling of the vehicles. I also felt that it was difficult to complete certain missions as the aiming on the guns is useless. The graphics are good though they dont beat the GTA games and the added games are harder than i would have expected, though this may be because of the lack of care taken in the final finishing stages of making this game. On the whole i feel that there are games that make Driver 3 look quite poor though i've enjoyed it on the whole and would say that it's worth buying, although it must be bought in the second hand section because thats the only place you will get the proper price for a game like this.
| It's fairly good and yet not!!!! | | fazboy007 from Nottingham, United Kingdom says (3/Jul/2004): | Just bought Driver 3 and have to say that I am not as pleased with it as I thought I would. The graphics are ok and the music is not bad, but there are too many bugs to make this a classic game. I think that they have spent the budget on paying top actors to voice the game instead of spending the money on improving the gameplay and bugs. It's worth playing and you will have some enjoyment when you play it, but I would recommend renting it first before buying it. The worst thing that I could say about this game is that the missions range from extremely easy to frustratingly difficult. You might be chasing someone in your car and lose them because you hit a post, and then you have to start right at the beginning again. Enough said!!!
| Rent it first! | | Lance from Tracy, CA. USA says (3/Jul/2004): | Not a bad game. Not as good as GTA II and Vice City, but still a fun game. Controls are touchy when they need to be subtle and slow when they need to be sharp. Finished it in about 20 hours total playtime. Most of the 70+ cars are not what you would want to drive (vespas, vans, renaults, etc). I would suggest renting it as you will complete the game much faster than your $40 is worth to buy it. Overall a fun enough game but nothing amazing.Driving in Miami is much more fun than Nice, cars in Miami are far better. The map gives basic directions, but doesn't tekk the whole story. Needs a "mission Briefing" option for those who lack the patience (like me) to wait through endless cutscenes in order to find out your goal in each level.
| If you like Driver 1 and 2, you'll love Driver 3. | | Vinny Camera from Chicago, Illinois. USA says (23/Jun/2004): | If you are a fan of the Driver series, you should purchase Driver 3. Graphically, Driver 3 is excellent. This was my main complaint with Driver 1 and 2. The people at Reflections have greatly improve the crashes in the game. They are much more realistic. The sounds during gameplay have been done extremely well. The cops are alsosmarter because now you will be pursued even if you switch cars. The control of the cars is a lot tighter. Two of the mini games, pursuit and getaway make the fun factor well worth it. All in all this is the best in the Driver series and everything has been improved in Driver 3. If you had trouble putting down the
controller in Driver 1 and 2, you'll have some late nights with Driver 3!
| not to bad | | jordan from holmen/wisconsin says (7/Sep/2005): | I really enjoy the game but i hate how there are hardly any places you can go into and i agree with another review that its bullcrap that you cant flip out cars your chasing in the missions and how the cars have no grip and then theres no sense of speed. and whats up with taking out things like the crane you get to use in the mission "18 wheeler". just a couple more things i hate how cluddered the third level is. i do like this game, but three years of work, ha my < remove me > at $$! at the airport in the 2nd level you dontsee any planes come in and out. finally i think they should have put in a helicopter, a plane, and a tank just one of each. well everyone i hope you enjoy/ enjoyed the game. later.
