Aha, right, I'm getting into this game now... Oh, it's finished. Bugger... | | Pete H from Maidstone, England says (31/Dec/2003): | I bought this game looking forward to some intense fighting, patriotic cutscenes, inspiring music and effects, a long lasting challenge, a good reply factor and awesome graphics to top it off. Well, 2 out of 5 ain't bad...
The first level isn't a patch on Frontline's, and to all those magazines out there who have given this game 8 or 9 out of 10, listen up. First the good points. All two of them. The music and effects are excellent, no complaints there. Graphics? Again, excellent, although there is some noticeable slowdown at points, but it is rare. Now the bad. Too easy. By a long long way. The only way to get any challenge from this game is to set the difficulty right up. Uninspiring levels that become very samey. When your in the jungle, you cant help but feel that you might as well be in a city made out of foliage, its all very linear. The storyline is, well, how can I put this... abismal. Awful. Terrible. It has no relevance to the main character, whose name i cant even remember, and all that pap about him going on a mission of revenge to find his lost brother is... well... pap, like I said. You don't save your brother, and there is no real end to the story. In fact, the last level ends very abruptly with the sinking of an aircraft carrier. Oh, and for those that are interested, that would be the seventh level. Well, 9 technically, but the first 2 are so pathetically short and easy that i didnt bother to count them as real levels. Frontline had well over 20 missions, probably nearer 30 odd, and they were all the same length or longer than the ones in Rising Sun... and they were more fun... and more challenging... and... better. Just better.
Now, the AI. I will agree that it is better than Frontline. Yes. But the Japanese officers are the DUMBEST people I have seen in a game... ever... and that includes all the idiot creatures in pokemon... wow, they must be dumb then. What person in their right mind when they have a shotgun pointed at them thinks "I know, I'll put down my gun and stab him with my big Japanese Katana thingy... Oh, I seem to have a large whole in my stomach... oh, I'm dead." You just wouldnt do that, you shoot the guy with your gun!
Another thing that has plagued both Frontline and Risng Sun, and maybe other MOH games, I'm not sure, the unbelievably annoying collision detection on, well, everything. Walls, Stairs, Barrels, Boxes, you name it, the collision radius is set at least a few inches too wide. So sure, you can see the enemy, but you cant shoot him, because there's an invisible thing blocking your way, your gonna have to sit in the open pretty much to get a clear shot... if you dont get shot first that is.
20 authentic weapons? Well, i counted 6. 9 if you include all the different mounted guns you can man. Never 20. That's just a lie.
Multiplayer. It's fun for a while. Unfortunately that 'while', is about an hour. It's just too samey. And the co-op is a bit different sure, but playing split screen is very disorientating when your in a gun fight, you dont know who is being shot at from where.
All in all this game is... well yes, I will say it, because it is. Pathetic. It's pathetic. If it were a car, it'd be a Vauxhall Nova... with 3 wheels... and a broken exhaust... and half an engine... and broken windows... and a shabby interior... and, well you get the picture. Now, I would be off to take this game back and get something a little worthwhile, but unfortunately, I got it mail order, so I'm stuck with it. You people arent! Take it back while you still can! If you think there are more levels to come, there aint mate! 9. thats it. Oh and dont get me started on the Historical accuracy... I'm gonna stop now before this rant becomes completely rediculous...
| Fresh new ground, or a $60 Appetizer? | | A gamer from San Antonio, Tx. says (1/Jan/2004): | For all the complaints I've read os far, I'm going to have to go the other way on this one: I actyually enjoyed playing the asain theater, It's about Damn time. For all those who think that the series should stay in Europe,I say go back to playing the Original MOH on PS One, Oh yeah Frontline is just a re-hash of that, wait a minute so is every other MOH title other than Rising Sun, oops guess you guys wnat them to stay in Europe so they can REHASH it AGAIN, YET ONE MORE TIME. For those types, it must be easy cooking for, just give em a 99 cent hamburger everyday for the rest of their life...As for Me, sorry a lil teriayki here, some egg-rolls there, chop suey on the side every now and then. The point being, Rising Sun , in many respects is a welcome change of pace.
The second major issue that comes up is everyone ranting about the brevity of the game, and lack of sustained missions. Ok, i can go along with that. The problem was --in terms of missions-- EA went overboard. They tried to encapsulater way too much of the war in the Pacific and ended up with paltry fare. Guadacannal should have been a complete MOH Game by itself, as should the Phillipines, and Burma. They want to make a MOH around PT-Boats, fine then do it, just don't do it half-ass&d. And why is it that every stinking MOH game has got to involve the OSS, SOE, or some other James Bond-y kinda of outfit? It seems to me that the TRUE CMOH recipients were more often than naught in NO WAY connected to such comic-book garbage. Why can't there just be regular soldiers doing extraordinary things, The Fall of the Phillipines scenario is a prime example. Heck, trying to get a wounded buddy back to batt'n aide through a mine feild while being shot a can be just as every bit as exciting as some sort of spy mission? EA has to ask themselves the Question: Is this series really about acts of courage in combat, or is it a wanna-be James Bond-Alstair Mclean-Indianna Jones Knock off?
Ok they have an opportunity to fix all the problems in one word: KOREA. WWII has been milked so much that the cow is giving Red Milk. Time to move on, as i said before EA can concentrate on realistic combat situations, not scenarios that are driven by the lead character in search of King Solomon's Skivies, or some such nonsense. The Civil War, The Boxer Rebellion, The Mexican-American war, The War with Spain, the Indian Campaigns of the Old West, and the War of 1812 are all fertile topics that can breathe new life into the series. EA doesn't have to stop selling Milk, they only need to switch cows.
| good game but many parts left to be desired | | Tyler Morphew from lakeville USA says (5/Jan/2004): | As a fan of the MOH series i was very optomistic about rising sun
i was positive that it would be better than frontline, little did i know that ea games has become unfirmilar with a good quality game. I am not saying that the game is terrible but it sure has left much to be desired.
First the good parts- multiplayer! this allows for everyone to play unlike frontline where you where forced to fight over the controler to see who would play next.Another great part of the game was the fact that you have more freedom to complete objectives in different ways. The graphics look OK, the backgrounds look good but the mission deviders suck they used a thick wall of tree like objects to prevent you from acsessing the
the vast area of jungle that was not included in the level.
Another great addition to the game is the 2 player campaign, fun!
Now the bad grrrr!!!
Some people belive that the game has gained realizim over frontline i would have to disagree, taking out and aircraft at low level flight with a thompson? i dont think that happend very ofton. the scenary was very scetchy. The amount of glitches was unbeliveable, i saw soldiers walk though walls and men stuck in the walls. This game really at time offends me, i was stabbed with a baonet more times than i can count and slashed to bits by a samouri sword. urrrggggg!!
One thing that puzzles me is the lack of use of certain weapons in all the MOH games, the M1 carbine has not been found to my knowledge, i know that it is not a standard infantry weapon and it was pretty weak too but it would be nice to see it once in a while. The M3(grease gun) has yet to be seen, i know not standard infantry but still i am sure they could find a way to put it into a tank for you to find. little of our heavy machine guns have i seen for my use either (browning 1917).
I hate to be one to bad mouth this game, it is in fact a descent game and i truly love to play it, but sometimes things about it make me wonder. if you own frontline and have beaten it many times i still belive this game is for you even if the lack of levels is a turn off i am sure the multiplayer option more than makes up for its weakneses/!
| allirght! lets see the next MOH Game! | | Drew from Indiana,Warsaw says (29/Sep/2004): | ok, heres the deal..Riseing sun was sweet but the levels are way to short, there's not enough gun,s,A.I sucked, needs vehicles,Game to short.ok first topic....levels...The levels are ok but for one...Your character should talk....Extend langth of levels. The guns were good but man we need alot more guns...i mean alot ok the B.A.R is a clasic so is the M1 Garand so they were ok...but the model 12 trench gun has to go..i mean gunny kept that shot gun the whole game......dont have them keep the same gun through the whole game....and you should put like an ammo depo so like through out the levels you can get new guns....Oh,Dont forget Put in Lugers! Next..vehicles...really all that E.A put in was turrent to machine gun to turret to machin gun to tail gun of a bomber...come on ppl put in some vehicles you can be in and drive or be in a vehicle and shoot I mean a vehicle really that you can control.the A.I was ok but it was like.....your hideing somewhere and they come out of no where and seem like they know where your at and start shooting at you...man thats crap....and the american team...man they just run back and forth, back and forth,And when gunny was in the tank and was at the road block at the end of his ride a jap came up to me i was next to the tank and the tank didnt shoot....gunny didnt shoot....so that was dumb....and in multi player when you get into the tank you use a machine gun......Why ppl Why? Do you not want us to use a tank turret? well any ways.....I think you guys should add a boot camp that would rock.....with the basic training stuff like that and be able to call air strikes Kinda like...Full spectrum warrior But still MOH like.....and the game needs to be a lot longer! you need fortresses.....diffrent tanks and plains...Kick *** sounds and music ( Yet riseing sun and front line music rocked that a 100% man). And maby....NOT CHEATING ( meaning-I was shooting the japs that went after your guys brother and they wouldent die) better cheat codes and lotz of movies I love those history movies. that all ppl thx for reading ps. I Liked that thing on frontline "A good day to dye" do alot more stuff like that the slow-mo part was cool!
| This game sucks | | Steve Elliott from Silver Spring, MD USA says (7/Jan/2004): | You guys are right, The levels are too short. For the amount of money that you paid they could have included the cheat codes but its too easy to beat anyway. What i did't like about the game was you can empty a whole magazine clip on a Jap soldier and he still will not go down even if you are on target. Too many Japs in the foxholes got kinda old real quick. where was the cool stuff like bazookas, better sniper rifle with scope. The ship sabotage seen you got no grenades that really sucked big time, Im very dissapointed for the $50.00 bucks i spent on the game. I expected alot more out of the game. You got no medals or increase in rank in the game. While playing the rising sun game i also found it harder to see clearly in the jungle fights, they put too much junk in the jungle scenes. In the middle of playing the rising sun game i felt like taking it out and replay the frontline game instead even if i beat it already.Shooting Nazis were more fun and more of a challenge. That game was a real EA game to play and you can buy it for $19 bucks now. When you killed a jap you got the predictable reactions when shooting them. Wake up EA, Give us a game worthy for us to play. The Rising Sun was not worth the money that you ripped us all off for. I feel as a loyal EA game player that you owe us a free game which I know will never happen. Big upset. In the Philippine scenes they were poorly done, you saw no local village people the game, What about the battle of Corrigador, the Bataan death march? You guys missed alot i the Philippine scene of the game.
| Such potential but such a let down | | Andy Boardman from Bracknell, England says (7/Jan/2004): | I began this game thinking 'wow'. Good graphics. The first level was awesome, with the planes in the sky and the sheer confusion and panic really gave you a feel for what it was like to be there (think back to MOH Frontline and the beachead).
And for me the game continued to be facinating throughout. Singapore was well laid out and offered an acceptable degree of difficulty. The jungle levels kept me on my toes and absorbed me into the gameplay. Bridge over the river kwai level was fun (nice touch with the elephants). The temple level was superb, if a little easier than i would have liked.
The carrier level was quite a letdown though. I felt it was far to similar to levels in other MOH games and gave me few, if any, suprises. Except one. That was the last level. Such a disapointment. And worst of all, was the obvious lining up of the next MOH game which will obviously hit our shelves in the next couple of months.
EA have spoilt, what to me, was the best run of first person shoot-em-ups with what could have been the best of the line. The game overall was too short, too easy and didn't develop the story and charectors enough. The choice of weapons was limited and at times pointless (did anyone actually use the bazooka on the temple level). This was not good value for money and EA should issue the missing disc from the box for free to anyone who has purchased Rising Sun.
I will certainly think twice before purchasing the next game. I am normally in the shop on release date.
Come on EA. Whats happened?
| The Pacific Campaign: In 4 hours? | | A gamer says (5/Dec/2003): | Something forboding occured as soon as I got my greedy hands on this highly awaited game. The MOH series would now have multiplayer and on-line additions to the always fantastic single player capbusters, but low and behold, only one disc in the case. Yikes, don't tell me they shortened the single player campaign to accommodate the on-line action? Something tells me this was a weekend rental. Nine missions later I was done, discovering it took only 4 hours, as opposed to the 19 missions and 9 hours it took for Frontline. Not only that, but you are now required to complete Bonus objectives that you can only discover by accident, in addition, Accuracy of 80%(?) or more is required to get a medal. Not only that, you also have to take under 50 hits a level to get a medal as well. Considering aiming is far more unresponsive and haphazard than it's ever been with the series, it makes the brutal challenge annoying for even hardcore gamers! The enemy AI is actually not as dumb as others have criticized, in fact, I was almost glad there was an occasional dope now and then considering the aiming woes here. Despite all this, somehow the sight of planes tanks and enemies getting walloped was enough to make it an enjoyable 4hours so I recommend it, especially for the ones that spent the small fortune on netplay gadgets. Be warned, this game can last a week if you don't navigate through the jungle missions well. If Pistol Pete and Midnight Raid were real missions we would have had recon-maps wouldn't we??
| Fine Game | | Mike from Detroit, USA says (10/Dec/2003): | Excellent game play. Having to hit targets repeatedly adds to the difficulty, but when set on easy, too many health items lying around. Great score (music) and exciting jungle sequences. My only complain is it is too short. The levels were fun and changed up the scene, from jungle islands to cities to fortresses to the air craft carrier. Secrets were real tough to find and it is awful tough to get medals and the bonuses unless you stumble over them. I had a ball playing, but it ended too quickly. The sound was the best part of the game. The music captured the flavor of the particular level and kept me interested. The weapon sounds were realistic, and running across areas, hearing Japanese weapons vs Australian weapons motivated me. The wide open areas and multi-directionality allows the player to use more expansive tactics than running up and clubbing the enemies. AI wasn't the best, but it is more fun to sneak up behind the enemy or use a flanking movement. You can blindside enemies in the confusion of combat. Graphics were also great. The jungle scenes were incredible and the haze and fog added realism. The game is a lot of fun, especially after you've played through once, and are out looking for the secrets and hidden items. It could have been longer, tough.

| Medal of Honour Rising sun: Best game i've played | | Mark from England,Cheshire says (12/Mar/2004): | This game was fantastic!!!!
i found the graphics amazing and the sound was so clear you could hear every detail.
The story line was amazing aswell, each mission never really had anything similar to the last in most cases.
1 thing i didn't like about this game was the fact that on the 2 player mission mode you had less missions than on the one player mode.i also found the multyplayer option lacking in detail i found that once i had played one multyplayer game didn't want to do it again.despite this i found the game very addictive, every time i got off the game i wanted to go on it again.the controls for the game are a bit complex and hard to understand at first but this is just a small hurdle to overcome.
the game was good fun as the missions were very long which kept your attention for a very long time. out of a rating of 10 for fun the game desrves a 9.the weapons on some missions were a bit difficult to control, these were mainly machine guns and shotguns but this just added to the fun.the game was alittle pricy at £45 but all newish games are like this.
MY OPINION IS THAT THIS IS ONE OF MY MOST FAVOURITE GAMES EVER!!!!!!!!!
| It's a great game but it really needs to be longer | | Daine from auckland, New Zealand says (15/Jul/2004): | Medal of Honour Rising Sun had a great story to it. It is quite fun. I bought it about 5 months ago and I still play it all the time. now that i am almost finished I only play the missions when i am bored and i usually have friends around so I play them at multiplayer. If I dont have friends around then i just play my family or neighbours. It would be way better if you could play it on xbox live. the graphics are good but not as good as some of the games that i have played before. it is in the war so everything is ment to be dirty but I still think that the game lacks of colour. if you look down a road you can mainly see one colour but a lot of different shades in which dosn't look that excyting. The levels have a lot of adventure in which is one of the main things that I look for in games. in most of the games that I have played when another person shoots all you hear is bang, but in Medal of Honour you can actually hear the bullet as if it is comming right past you!
$100 in New Zealand is worth it for this great game as it has lots of adventure and it is lots of fun so I would recomend it for all those game fans out there!
| short , but pretty good | | bo from goldsboro, NC USA says (26/Dec/2003): | this game was overall pretty good. game play is much more exciting than frontline. I'm kind of disappointed with the amount of levels and time taken to finish it. Four hours is way too short for a war game then again they didn't have much to base it on except for a couple of small battles and the attack on pearl harbor. The intro was great though, weapons are pretty much the same except for some new Japanese automatics and a pistol. One thing that was challenging was the banzai charges from behind when you were getting turned into swiss cheese from a jap in your front. A lack of realization was discovered in the level midnight raid, when your commander person is standing there getting stabbed with a bayonet by like 5 japs to the point that you'd expect him to be dead as a doorknob, then he'd get back up and start shooting again; as if they are invincible. and it also took me 4 shots to kill one guy point blank, so yes , definitely a lack of realization. the graphics are pretty good, about the same as frontline.
| Ben Affleck himself coldn't have have made this game any worse! | | Cameron C. from Coeur D'Alene, Idaho says (14/Dec/2003): | Okay... so um... maybe its time to throw in the towell for ol' MOH? Aside from the obvious story based distractions, astutely pointed out by Grey down there concerning the historical issues, I think this game had one redeeming quality: Its music. So, I'll give it a two because of its music. And, because I'm a girl and thus inclined to be a bit more sensitive than the next person. Anyway, as I was saying. I've seen (or heard, rather) better voice acting on insurance commercials. Who did they cast? A highschool drama class room? Psh... Anyway, the gameplay itself was repetitive and dull... The storyline had really no presence or voice. No connection what-so-ever to the lead character... what was his name... Joe? Please. And to all you poor, brainless fools who actually enjoyed this game... Its people like you that encourage these companies and make them think that its okay to publish trash like this!!! Why am I here?! What am I doing? This is all your fault! (points at random person.)
| As bad as I hoped it wouldn't be. PS2 mouse anyone? | | happyshopper from Birmingham, England says (17/Dec/2003): | Having tried Halflife, I should have known better. First person shooters designed for a PC with a keyboard and mouse just don't work on a playstation. If it had targeting assistance it would help but you end up spending soooo much time aiming that you end up a sitting duck. The self centering on the analog joysticks also gets in the way of aiming and moving making it all the more jerky.
It is possible that it would be more fun on multiplayer, but as with Unreal online etc, you bound to come across several 12 year olds in Italy with more time on their hands to learn to do this that just make online play a joke. A brief joke. At least with Playstation online the hardware will all be the same so you won't get the LPB problem that plagues online play with PCs.
If you really like this sort of thing and you have the time to learn the controls, I might be fun. For the rest of us, stick to what works well; anything that doesn't need more than four buttons to enjoy.
| What a load of S*it ...!!!!! | | Alex Russo from London says (22/Dec/2003): | I agree with some of the other comments - The jungle parts were just boring after a while, not to mention - easy !! And, yes I too completed the game in under 3 sittings (3 short sittings at that, as well) I was just a wee bit slightly P'd off when I relised after the aircraft carrier level - that was the end of the game. How many levels again, was it 9 ?? 9 levels - sort it out EA games and in the true sprit of EA games I challenge you to tell me why I paid as much as I did for this game. Did you think we would be happy with only 9 levels ?? Get real..!! And give me my money back..!! Don’t get me wrong, I love the MOH range. I also love to be challenged when playing FPS’s, but this game had no real challenges. I’ve replayed some of the levels and found the so-called ‘secrets’, but why ? What’s the point in playing a game with a ‘no die’ cheat, if the game is so easy in the first place ??? EA games – Challenge everything. Challenge my arse !!
| My opinion of the actual game not value | | MUFC from Manchester, England, UK says (12/Feb/2004): | The game is too short ok fair enough more levels are required. However for the 9 missions you get (7 two player campaign missions) this game is awesome it is very challenging and quite addictive its only worth the money if you don't mind the shortness. There is a wide range of weapons available graphics are cool they are not really great but they are certainly not rubbish. The multiplayer skirmishes are great as well its there if you want a shoot out with your mates or just want to kill americans or japs you can have a free for all or team deathmatch.
The actual game with all the missions and multiplayer options is definetely a ten out of ten its a good game but if you are only going to buy it then complete it and then never gonna play it again then its definetely not worth your money but if you go on multiplayer a lot and try missions over and over again on a different difficulty then this is worth £40.00.
Can't wait for the next one
| Exciting and great fun!!!! | | Randy from Akron, MI U.S.A. says (16/Dec/2003): | Who says short can't be sweet. Sure it might have been nice to have a longer game for fifty bucks. I still enjoyed shooting the other bad guys for a chance. Hitler was'nt the only evil guy during the war. I liked the other MOH titles, but this was new, fresh and cool. My hat is off to you guys. Great game. To the wimps that thought it was breeze, try it without codes on the difficult setting. Maybe it'll be a little tougher to lolly-gag though the missions. The graphics on this one I thought were outstanding. Maybe it was'nt quite historically correct, but hey we would'nt know that unless we crack a book on the subject. Overall the makers are on the right track with this one. I await the next one, hopefully they stay in the Asian theater for awhile. A ending with the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi would be a heck of lot better than the slightly lame one we got. But I understand you wanted to leave us wanting more, right?
| The Best One so Far. | | Joe from Boston, USA says (28/Nov/2003): | I've been looking forward to playing this and I was not dissapointed. The first level, attack on Pearl Harbor, was an awesome introduction to the game. Shooting down Jap zeros and torpedo planes. The background was just as good. Smoke billowing in the background. It was awesome. This continues through most of the game. Great action, great detail especially with the jungles. The fire in this game was exceptionally good. The historic value of this game was also very good, all the scenarios (except the last one I think) were based on real WWII battles or operations. The one down point of this game was how repetetive it got. I know this is a shooting game but the game could have involved you driving a tank, flying a plane, or more chances behind large guns like in the first level. Overall this is a great game and a great addition to the MOH family.
| short, average multiplayer, bad aiming, easy, and not addictive. | | Al from Monico, Wisconsin, USA says (10/Jan/2004): | This game is far worse than most shooters out there. It had a very notchy aiming system that you had to adjust to like. Only 9 levels of play! Come on. The outside levels are usually fun on shooters except for this one with bad visuals. CAUTION: don't buy this game, if you are still curious, rent it. The difficulty is way too easy on this game. I bought it and beat it in 2 days. Where has the fun gone. The only semi-decent part of this game is the multiplayer. But you can't customize the weapons. All they have is sets like every other game still. One of the cheesiest things I found was that the enemies don't come out of hiding until you mount the machine gun. Are they stupid or something. Which brings up another point, the A.I. sucks. Just run up to a guy and circle around him! I'm already sick of this game and warning you all of it.
| Way too short | | Rob Denholm from Liverpool, UK says (6/Dec/2003): | Title says it all really. I've never played MOH games before so I had nothing really to compare this game to, it started out really well with a great opening sequence that gets you straight into the action. The two person campaign was going enjoyable until...the game just ended, didn't even think I was anywhere near the end. It's a huge let down, took us a little longer than 4 hrs but not by much and that's pretty lame...4 hrs to complete the Pacific part of WWII... and I'm a rookie!
If the game had been longer then I think it would have hit the nail right on the head, unfortunatly it doesn't it leaves you feeling quite staggered at just how badly a game can end. Shame.
P.S. What happened to the guy's brother? The sis just stopped talking about him after she shacked up with his buddy. Heartless...
