Lament is right42726

A gamer from Chicago, IL says (2/Oct/2004):
This game is a much better attempt at a 3D Castlevania than the N64 games. However, this game is very repetitive and felt more like a Devil May Cry knockoff than a Castlevania game. The levels and gameplay were repetitive and the only really fun part of this game was the boss battles. It's a decent game, but no Symphony of the Night. Or even Aria, Harmony, or Circle. 2D games are rare these days. Just make a 2D side scrolling Symphony-esque Castlevania that uses the technology found in systems like PS2 or Xbox.

my review (@crazy mode)42726

A gamer from Santa Clarita (CA) U.S.A. says (6/Aug/2004):
castlevania lament of innocence has been da bst game so far in da castlevania sries.bosses hav pretty cool moves,da sound is bad ass.da best part is how u slowly but gradually u gain all ur skills(if ur not playin all skill mode)specially da spinning blast.the story makes it look as if it was a movie dat u choose wad 2 do.but da cam angles...S#1T!!!!! da one i hate da most is wen u fight walter (who is supposed 2 be da last boss, but is not) does dat "behold....somthin somthin" and den he blasts a big mofo explosion in wich u cant block, only perfect block allows u 2 block it.but in crazy mode he keeps doin dat big bang while in normal mode only dos it once an stops.so im triyin 2 see him so i know wen 2 run frward wid da wolf leg on but da s#1tty camera view focuses on ME insted of da boss im fightin. so da easiest way 2 fight him without wastin ur mp is 2 drain all ur hearts. 4 this i either recommend using da holy light (cross with green orb) an aim it at waltr an den shoot.(if u r in normal mode not in da < remove me > at crazy mode, den all u hav 2 do is wait 4 him 2 do da big bang once an den go an attack him)anoder way but rather a harder way than easier is to get da black orb and eithr use da cross ot holy watr wit it and itll go straight2 waltr widout even aiming.but 2 get da black orb u gotta beat da forgotten one... thats why i said its harder!!but either way,try an use all of ur hearts an heart repairs cause wen u fight da last boss(death) ur subweapon attcks will re bound back 2 u an damage u!so dont use a subweapon attck aganst death.anoder thing, if u want the unknown meditative incense(which it doesnt say where it is in the OFFICIAL GUIDE for s#!t)go 2 da palace of watr falls. in da frst skull chute (in da same room where da door 2 da ice whip boss is ,but u frst hav 2 go where da axe subweapon is, go all da way 2 da wall an ull see a door shaped crack, wait 4 an armor wid a big spiked ball wid a chain 2 appear.den when it throws da ball < remove me > at u dodge it an itll make a hole thru da wall. go in, fight some red skeletons an a axe armor den go 2 da next door.if a room dat looks like a cave is da one ur in, den keep goin up till u see a door.)take da skull chute, an if u get every single coin in da ride(if u miss at least one,u will not get da meditative incense.)Den at da end quickly go 2 da middle an get da incense. dis will gradually recovr ur hrts when da mp is on.also if u wanna get da mobius brooch but u cant make fast money(u gotta beat < remove me > at crazy mode once 2 be able 2 buy it, but den da mofo brooch is $200,000!!!)do wad i did. in any room dat has a lot of spartacuses dats where da easy money is. cus almost evry time u beat one it gives u $250 or $400 on rare occasions. but this guy drops da member plate which each card gives u 10% off discount < remove me > at rinaldo's an if u have da extra accsesorie bag, ull have three spots to put in cards, so wid three cards ull get 30% off! so keep beatin da spartacus skeletons to get all three cards, an if u hav extras, just sell em an ull get $10,000 4 each.so dis way ull only hav 2 pay $140,000 4 da brooch.dis game is pretty cool, but u just cant stop playin it till u hav played as joachim, pumpkin, in < remove me > at crazy mode and beat da game again wit da morpheus brooch.damn! i wrote a lot! peace.

Brilliant gameplay and wonderouse Music41432

Darius Enthalamine from Vensvaline, Kamerovo, Russia says (23/Jun/2004):
This game definitely braught back the honor to Konami after the Nintendo 64 Castlevania stole it away with sluggish movements and multi glitches. Lamment of Innocence is one of the best, I feel, because of the music. The sound is so vivid and wide in styles that I think it may actually surpass the rellished "Symphony of the Night." I found a few downs in the game unforunatly... One, the camera is auto, which means while you are trying to kill some Ogres or being bombarded by Flea Men you may become open to attacking walls. Two, this game was short... Too short for the Castlevania series. When I was done my time in this game was six hours and twenty minutes, which I think made the game lose some points in my book. Three, when you beat the game and get to play as Joachim, there is literally NO sotryline. No video sequences, no cut scenes, not even an opening. I realize this is a secret character and that they couldn't afford to make two sotrylines but come on, I think he at least desereves an opening (due to the fact he is probably one of the coolest Vampires I've seen in any game). I Really enjoyed the whole "Music Box" at the end, though I wish you didn't hafto go to the menu to play it. All in all a nine of ten, fantastic, stupendouse, uterably ASTOUNDING!.... Just fix that darn camera Konami...

don't let the harsh critics discourage you36728

benjamin sprague from asheville,nc,unitied states says (8/Dec/2003):
let me state for the record i own both symphony of the night and lament of innocence. alot of castlevania purists complain that lament of innocence pales in comparison to symphony of the night. perhaps in some ways yes. however you will not find a more beautiful and fluid action game this year. lament of innocence has a stirring sound track,a deep combat/combo system, a wealth of secrets and hidden passages, relentless grotesque legions of the damned, and some of the most addictive gameplay i have ever experienced. the crack of the belmont whip has never looked so good. if you loved dmc and symphony of the night you'll enjoy this title immensly.

The beginning of a great legend36336

Thomas from Ca, U.S.A. says (29/Nov/2003):
Wow finally we learn the Belmont clan's real history. The music, the stages the level designs, everything adds up to a great game. This game really is for mature audiences, quite hard at some points, but good all the same. Plus the secrets are really fun everyone will enjoy it. Castlevania L.O.I. still has room for improvement, but thats beside the point. But the thing is they should release the freakin limited edition in the U.S. just than in Japan! This game is one to be added for anyones collection

this is a good game36093

Sergio from Miami, Florida, USA says (26/Nov/2003):
This is a really good game. Could have been improved if you acctually fought dracula and had frankenstein and the oringinal horror monsters like the warewolf and frankenstein. Also, it would be better if there ware more levels and you were able to go to the back of the castle instead of only the inside and being warped to different levels. I think fighting Death was a GREAT battle and a little of a challenge. I loved fighting The Forgotten One, that was a good challenge. The puzzles in the game ware good and i spent a while searching for 100% of the map.

almost like a perfect copy of Symphony of the Night35866

Monica from Florida says (22/Nov/2003):
basically, when i started playing, i was hyperventilating and getting hysterical as the introduction came up. i have been ACHING for a new Castlevania to come out, and i was praying because i didnt want it to be crappy or watered down, like most of the sequel games of today. i loved the music, and i couldnt help but squeal at the familiarity of all the stages and music. the old fashioned endless torches brought back old memories, but i hate how we have to block to gain MP instead of it to slowly come back. i hated the restriction of a single weapon (there shouldve been a large selection of different kinds) and it wasnt as complex as i wished for it to be, but im just happy it wasnt horrendously bad. i missed familiars. it paled in comparison to symphony of the night, but it has its own individuality, considering it was a continuation and having to fill the boots of such a great game like symphony of the night. BAD CAMERA!! it is such an annoyance to have a bad camera angle when trying to find secret areas and fighting a boss. the plot in every stage to meet the boss was creative and made sense, unlike in SOTN where if u happen to run into the boss room, u fight. i like the chain of events that linked to Leon's past, but Mathias should be like a partner or a tag team buddy and should play a more active role in the beginning of the game when u explore the castle. otherwise, its a good game. the sub weapons are much better than of SOTN cuz u can beef em up thanks to the orbs. the many varieties of knights reminded me all too much of those annoying Guardians from SOTN.beautiful graphics, lavish music, good enemies, the encyclopedia was a bit vague since it took alot of the old enemies from SOTN and didnt explain all too well about the enemies themselves. Example: the blood red skeleton's descirption didnt exactly explain why it kept coming back *bcuz of its bones eternally soaked with blood* the game pleased me in general but didnt meet my expectations entirely. overall decent and i gave it a high rating partly bcuz im so overjoyed that a new castlevania came out. nice riddles, kool challenges, im loving the whip swing. ^.^ it sux your not the devil's kid anymore, but its a change. the movies are impressive and deepen the plot extensively with every victory. the save points are...old school. as said before, im very impressed with the little obstacles and things you haveto do that initiate some sort of action that allows you to actually get to the boss. a very good RPG, yet somewhat not an RPG. very nyce, overall. It's not perfect, but is satisfying to some extent

it didnt hold a "Candle" to Symphony but its caslevania so10!!!!!!35754

David from Pitman USA says (21/Nov/2003):
I really think it started out terrible but as you play it it can get very fun.I have been playing castlevania ever since I was 3 years old and that is when i liked it the most because it scared the crap out of me. I thought that with the 3-D graphics they could have made it much scarier. Konami I am waiting for another castlevania as good as Draculas curse.(3) It would be nice to give more of a story to the new games to it was sad that a nintendo game had so much better story than a PS2 game but the game is over all pretty good only because of the bosses.....except please next time if you really need to have the Succubus in the game My God put some clothes on Woman!!!!!!!

good graphics but could have been longer35507

Cesar from osan air force base, south korea says (16/Nov/2003):
Overall, the game had beautiful graphics and most of the monsters that made the first Castlevania a legend. The interludes were impressive and the puzzles were a nice touch to an already good game. But what the game lacked was variety and it was too short. I found myself getting tired of fighting in the same castle and hoping that maybe there would be an outside part or that you could have partners. I beat the game in 3 days with just above 5 hours playing time.

Devil May Cry without GUNS!!!!!35305

Sal from Denison Tx, USA says (13/Nov/2003):
Well I have to say that the game was fun but it reminded me to much of Devil May Cry. The story line and the action was fun but everytime I played it I kept thinking of Devil May Cry.....but with out the guns. The one thing that I thought was real good was the music. Music was real good, although, the game was to easy; I expected it to be like old school.....HARD CORE. It was like playing Mario Sunshine.....To easy. Bought it on a Monday and beat it by Thusday of the same week. The one thing I did hate was the fact that you had to buy items. It took to long to gain a lot of money. Man I could steal more money form my grandma then getting it form the game. The bosses were to easy...like PONG easy. I will give it credit for sound and gameplay. Just to easy and similar to Devil May Cry...With out guns. It could have been cool if there were guns....lots of them.

lament of repitition34591

Godamnzilla from booyah,yormoma says (2/Nov/2003):
wow this game loops more backgrounds than a scooby doo cartoon. "Didn't I just leave this room? The map says so but it all looks the same." oh and the moody music is just a 30 second sound byte that loops on itself. wow, such innovation!! The character models where good , but in the last few side scrollers you could at least swap color palets with the armors. Sorry but i think i had more fun playing the first one. this ones a dog, playable, but still a dog. I expect way better from any 'vania after the Symphony.

Better than the Norm34409

Barry from Marshall, Tx, USA says (30/Oct/2003):
I've been waiting for this new castlevania game for a while now, but i hadn't really played the original ones before. For not having played any of the others, this game was truly amazing. the graphics were not top-notch but the physics and smoothness were. everything blended well together and the options the players are given make it even more astounding(being able to choose which level to beat first). in any case, this game has alot of adventure, action and a bit of puzzle solving for any gamer. i highly recommend this game. The only thing that let me down was the cheesy voice overs......they made me laugh and all but i thought they were pretty stupid. good game by a good game company.

Yes! Finally!!!!34227

A gamer from Easton, Pa, USA says (27/Oct/2003):
I've always been a huge Castlevania fan and was so desperate for a better game! The original Castlevania hooked you with the intense music, the graphics were outstanding for the time, and the game was probably the first to have hidden objects to find! All that wrapped into a Nintendo game! Now all this is back in a beautiful 3D version. Wish that all the original beast would have made their return, though Medusa is a treat! How great would it have been to have the giant bat, Frankenstein, and some of the origial monsters breathe in 3D? Where is the grim reaper?!?! A 3D remake would be awesome, but this one isn't a far cry! The only small let down is that there isn't much use of jumping to higher areas. The whip jumps once mastered are far and few. The exploration in Symphony of the Night also makes a comeback! The dialog gets a little cheesy at times, but I got past it! All in all this game ranks high in my book! All I can say is MORE!!!!! Great job Konami!

3D addiction34079

Joe Gamer from Struthers, Ohio says (25/Oct/2003):
My brother sold my ps2, and being that Symphony of the Night was not only addictive, but mind warping. I'm guessing this game will be no less than top of the line brain rattling schizophrenia. I'm not worried about submission. I haven't played it yet, but I suspect that a game with tons of hype in 1998 will not be played down by LOI ( five years in the making ). It's 3D, and the platform 2D SON had authentic genuine harmonic continuity through all levels of gameplay, mind starving colors, items, familiars, and spells, that had me doing no less than 45 mph on a sidestreet. I will play this game inside and out, but in the meantime, if this 3D Action is saturated with beatiful molecular color and mind stopping symphonic multitude, then there is no doubt in my mind this game should not be rated top of the line.
