The name is cachy and Disgaea sounds great.42975

A gamer from Chicago, Il, USA says (31/Oct/2004):
I am currently playing the game right now. I have been a rpg fan for many years. If the game has secrets, hard diffulty, tons of characters that "join your party", and great replay value, then I am there. So far I am in episode four and I have over 130+ hours of gameplay. My Laharl is at level 1500 and I have unlocked all human classes and a ton of the monster ones. This game greatly satisfies my love as an rpg veteran when it comes to spending countless hours of just plain old leveling up somewhere and watching my characters go up in power and magic. The reason why I have chosen the stragedy of just powering up laharl and getting him some good equiment and plenty of combined specialist is the following. I want to get him to the point where he can do thousands of hp damage and take very little in return. This way I can level up my characters extremely quickly when they help him in batle. I love the concept of this game, giving the player the option, which is rarely done, the ability to change the diffulty at will. I love getting to a boss and having to really work at killing it. I already know there's plenty this game offers and I probably will clock in another two or three hundred hours of game time. I am the type of player who is satisfied with just ending the game and putting it up. Before all is said and done, I will have every secret done, every class unlocked and the ultimate of everything Disgaea has to offer. Job well done producers and staff of this game. I can only imagine what part two is going to offer...

Sincerely,
Rpg veteran, Andy Jr.

A gamer says (29/Nov/2003):
Yes well it seems this game is starting to get harder to find, muahahaha.
As it should be, people seeming to be sucking this up as fast as possible. This is probably the last true anime based game we'll see on a major platform, everyone seems to be running like a little ***** to cel shade.

But truth be told Atlus is a name you can trust to deliver nothing short of a peaceful game, the difficulty in itself isn't the boss, in a sense you can make it as difficult or as easy as you want, that's the splendor.

Ever wondered what it'd be like to have 2 million Hp? There ya go!
Ever wanted to cause hundreds of thousands of damage to an enemy? This is your man.

The impressiveness lies not in the actual gameplay but in the bold move made by Atlus, making a true and tide anime game is a sign of true faith to the anime name.

Why did I give it a five? Story, it's somewhat simplistic but it's a nice twist from the norm, your a demon (yes a demon, not unlike Kain) who wakes up from a two year long slumber only to find his father killed.

Don't expect to be knocked off your boot's story wise but it's quite humurous at some points.

However...this is not and I mean NOT for the gamer who just wants to beat a game, this is for that perfectionist gamer, if you want every item, max stats, best possible classes, every single attack etc., expect to spend a long and I mean LONG time in this game.

Yes a true dungeon crawler with a no dungeon twist.

Final Fantasy Tactics on Crack35689

SBaby from USA says (20/Nov/2003):
When I wanted a FF Tactics meets Dragonball Z game, I didn't think anyone would deliver. Well, I was wrong. Atlus delivered it to America! Anyway, I picked up a copy of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the PS2. This'll be a long one too, so eat lunch first.

If you ever played a strategy game and thought, 'man, this would be even cooler if they added THIS' (THIS, meaning the generic idea that all gamers have), they probably added THIS in the game. It has originality, colorful characters, and some of the best music I've ever heard on a strategy RPG.

Here's the deal. You're Laharl, a demon, and son of the late King of Hell, Krichevskoy. You fall asleep planning for a 10-day nap, and wake up to find that you were sleeping for two years, and, as your vassal, Etna so gently breaks it to you, "Big news! Your father, King Krichevskoy, has died!" So, the purpose of the game is to basically retake Hell for yourself by proving your power to your vassals, and rival demons. I've looked, but the only place that I found a storyline that is even close to this is MK, which isn't story-driven anyway. As for the story, despite the fiery, satanic abyss, is actually comedic, and a parody of just about every anime out there. You even have to kill the Power Rangers. Seriously; I don't lie when I review a game. It's basically FF Tactics on acid. The story gets a 10!

The cast is both colorful, and bizarre. At first, they all seem funny, but have the occasional serious moments. Then, they're either funny, or joked about, making it even funnier than before. As for characters, they are colorful and diverse. You have the creatables, demons, monsters, the angelic assassin out to kill your father, only to find out that he's already dead, the corniest Defender of Earth, a robot that says BEEP BEEP BLIP BEEP. No, he doesn't beep, he actually says the words, BEEP BEEP BLIP BEEP! Finally, there's my personal favorite, the Prinnys. Ok! Atlus must have a grudge against the creators of Pokemon. These nauseatingly cute penguins say "DOOOOOOOOOOD" all the time, and explode when thrown. Three or four of these can start a chain-reaction that can wipe out a map in one turn! So, in all, characters get a 10!

Graphicswise, I can't complain. It's a tactics RPG, so of course FF quality graphics aren't to be expected. However, for the type, this game has some very good graphics. I have always been a fan of the anime-hand-drawn characters, and this game doesn't disappoint. The battle effects are also unique and crisp. There's one move where the main guy jumps on a falling meteor ang laughs maniacally as it comes crashing down on the enemies. Graphics gets a 9 here.

Battles are turn-based, which makes it easy to manage the commands, which can be overwhelming at times, but not overly complex. It took me about an hour to learn the main stuff and what REALLY shouldn't be done. And, I learned the combining levels trick the hard way. I still won the battle, though!! Also, the 2, 3, and 4-person attacks are some of the coolest sttacks in the game. The concept is to combine the damage for ludicrous numbers that I've seen as high as 300,000 points of damage. Also, levels don't stop at 99. They go on up to 9999! And, you're going to need those levels, seeing as the strongest enemy in the game is level 6000, with almost 10,000,000 HP. And plenty of enemies have levels in the thousands. Battles get a 10!

Finally, there's the sidequests, which I'll just touch up on. The Dark Assembly lets you pass bills, bribe senators, or "persuade" them to see your point of view. This is very fun and opens up a bunch of extra maps to play. Item world is freakin awesome! EVERY ITEM has its own 100 floor dungeon with random floors, and even bosses!! And, if you beat floors, the item gains power. Beat floor 100, and the Item God fights you. You have a chance here to steal one of the ultimate weapons which all tack opn 10,000 to each stat!! I give sidequests a 10!

To summarize, it's hard to overlook how great this game is! With multiple endings, side quests, and exploding penguins, this is THE most addictive game I've played in a good while. The game was extremely well made, considering how much they crammed onto this DVD. A few downsides, the camera angle is tricky in a couple of areas, and the game can get ludicrously difficult if you don't constantly level up. But, it's all good. SBaby gives Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the PS2 a 10 out of 10. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!

I haven't been so excited for a game, ever.28547

Geoff (Masamog) from Westland, Michigan- USA says (24/Jul/2003):
Wow, even after seeing countless reviews of this game being released in Japan, it hasn't swayed my attention to wanting to get this game on the day it comes out. I had first seen the game on the store shelves a month and a half ago only to see that it would be released in LATE AUGUST. I'm hoping it will be worth the wait, and I'm also hoping it'll serve as something to serve as sort of a Final Fantasy Tactics sequel, but flashier than it's predecessor.

By the looks of the game's dark, anime feel, the graphics of the game look like they can keep anyone's eyes entertained for it's 40+ hour gameplay. But then of course Final Fantasy Tactics had the same posted gameplay life, and I played one file for over 120 hours, so it's hard to tell.

There seems to be many alterations to the old tactical-style RPG battle system as well. For one, you can attack with up to four members of your party at once on a single enemy to deal up to 4x the damage (who would've thought). Two, you can switch your characters in and out of battle, something that was only previously done in turn-based battle games. There seems to be other changes as well, but I have yet to find that out.

I'm also attracted to the evilness that this game presents. The story-line is pretty well developed, and it sets you in your place to what you have to eventually accomplish. The recent King of the Underworld that the game takes place in, has been assassinated. You are the rightful heir to the throne, yet you have been in a deep magical slumber for the years after his assassination, and in these years, many men have stepped up to the throne and have been picked off as well. The story begins when you awake from this slumber, and your journey is to become the rightful King of the underworld. See? There's nothing supernatural about it, other than the setting of where the game takes place.

All in all though, this game looks spectacular in it's flashy looks, it's dark and interesting story-line, it's unique battle system, and it's hot anime girls. ;)
