Personally i think its a very good idea to bring new people to the sport.... And obviously you do not skate and never have... Because what you described as sick The game is ingenious, That is why i have given it a nine! Because, Its a revolution in custom gaming, Okay the custom deck and trick feature was a bit shabby, But at least they bothered to put it on, I fully await the coming of thug2 with its better create-a-park feature And better create-a-trick/deck Feature, AND!!! A Create-a-TAG!!! feature, now thats custom, smashing up the enviroment then skating it again, And then graffin' it...!
Okay This is an excellent game, And i can't beleive this review, Its so negative, And then you give it a positive conclusion And i also don't/cant understand these Negative comments anyway... I fell Literally Enmraged about your views....
| The Best Tony Hawk Yet | | Travis says (7/Jul/2004): | I have to say this would have to be the best Tony Hawk game yet.
While I think the game is great; there are also some things that some of you might dislike. First of all the game is extremly short and if you are an expert at the other games you could even beat it three or four times in one day. Another one of the things you might dislike is that the levels really haven't gotten any bigger in size (some of them are smaller than in Tony Hawk 4). Also the game is less colorful and the levels are a bit depressing because the buildings all look grimmy and old while sewage pipes are leaking all over town. Lasty the game isn't as innocent as the Tony Hawk Pro Skaters and you might want to consider weather it is appropriate to give this to a young child.
Now we get to the good news. This is a feature that no one will hate: improved graphics. The levels are also more realalistic and there are more goals in each of them. Also there is a new story line where you start off as a young teen whos dream is to become a pro skater oppose to the other games where you just go around and mindlessly skate. You can even get sponsers later on in the game when you become an am and make your own board graphics when you become a pro. Lastly you can play this game again and again and never get board of it (I myself have beat it about 20 times).

! Good Things !
- Improved graphics quality
Well, this isn't a new gossip, we know games get better on graphic's quality on their next sequels. Custom faces are improved and new animations added. Finally Neversoft's levels/stages/parks are getting better, well, not by size but by details (I believe there are too many objects on the main levels, these objects have nice details, just pay attention to things like fountains, etc). Create-a-Park is improved, now you can create custom parks with more things around.
- Weather effects
At least! It's the first extreme sports game with day/night on the same stages and custom parks too. There's even rain (quite fair) and snow (a bit nice).
- Excellent design
I allways take seriously the design of games like this. The menus, etc, are very well done. Neversoft gave a special dedication to design in this game, you can even choose the graphical interface of the game.
! Bad Things !
- Improved graphics quality but...
This is the king of glitches THPS sequel. You'll see floating hair (not on your head), girls with Toys 'R legs (create a girl with a mini skirt and pay attention to her legs sideways), serious glitches when doing lip tricks (the previous THPS games didn't have them like this), and many others.
- Weather effects... so, i want to play at/with...
Let's say the weather is just used to try to give a nice look to the "story" (yeah, yeah, when i start a 20 seconds goal it's night, i finish it, it's day). But the real problem is just one: You can't choose the weather. Was it too hard to at least allow us to choose if we want to play at night or day when choosing a level on high score/free skate mode? Many guys try to choose the weather by browsing through the goals, well this is not the right way to choose the weather (if there's one!), since it isn't the right way you'll still have problems in many cases, and you won't get the desired weather for free roaming. Some levels have a nice night version for example, but after completing one or some goals you won't see them ever again, unless you "want" to repeat the same goal. This is a pretty dumb situation.
- How the levels smell?
Create-a-Park is improved, now you can create custom parks with more things around, but still that annoying feeling of being skating inside a jail. Z-Axis has a better way to establish the limitations of custom parks, and also a better way to design the levels at all. THPS levels still aren't big/fun enough.

The game has lots of tracks of hip hop, rock and punk. The voices are pretty nice, it's amazing how the male character's voice can fit for anybody.
! Bad Things !
The game has a lot of Punk music, that really pissed me off. I hate Neversoft's way to try to be cool using craziness, and believe, it's getting worst. So, the game has lots of tracks, but prepare yourself to turn off lots of them too.

It was a really great idea to create THUG. You'll be glad to join some sponsor, have your own deck and have a place between the real pros. Again, it was really a great idea.
- New stuff is allways welcome!
Getting off your board, that's amazing, it's just another really great idea.
- Hotlinking, hehehe.
The connections and structure of the menus are excellent. You're skating, you can go to modify your skater and be right back to the same stage. Also you can create a trick when skating anywhere, that's helpful.
! Bad Things !
- Features!!!
1. Instead of making the Instant Replay feature really better, they removed it!
2. Create-a-Trick feature should be Create-a-Trick Beta. It really isn't that good like you think, you'll see it.
3. Create-a-Deck feature isn't that good. It only allows you to use 4 layers, so forget about dreaming of having your name on the board. And know what? Those 4 layers are for everything, so, even if your name has only 4 letters your board will have a not so good design, cause you won't be able to apply other symbols, images, etc, not even your sponsor's logo (but forget about that, the extra symbols and images aren't pretty good too).
- Holy features!!
There are no subtitles. But wait! I wanna ask you a question, what's the sense of using cars if when you get out of them you'll be on the same place where you started driving? This is the most funny attempt to create something related to cars i ever saw, since NES.
- Story??
I can't spoil it, you'll see how bad it is yourself. I'll just tell you one thing, you'll understand later:
"Who tha hell wants all his life to be based on just one friend???"
- System sin
The Story/Skate save file connection creates great failures and lack of performance on the game. (Wanna play that level you've just unlocked with another skater you've created? So, get ready to load him/her and do all the same again until you can unlock the level for him/her too),(Wanna make a new game? So, erase your custom skater again and...).
- How about wood? Merchandise?
The wide selection of decks is gone, you just get some skates from a skateshop, one thing i don't understand is why most decks are of the real pro skaters if this is a custom version!! Some sponsors where eliminated, so, you won't see decks/clothes/logos from sponsors like TheFirm, Almost/Panda, Shortys, Baker, City Stars, (Hell! After Zero, this is the most cool sponsor), etc. The game only has 4 sponsors, very funny.
- How about the goals?
Goals for what? Where's the money? It isn't even for stats. That usual way of getting stat points from the previous series is gone. Now you just complete the goals to see the ending and unlock levels, that's it, that's all. And just to tell you that the women's story is the same, so you'll see your female skaters acting like males during some situations of the story, so tell me, what tha hell is this? Glitch or laziness?
You'll be picking up every, i mean, everykind of items that you'll sometimes wonder if you're a dog or a skater, and you'll wonder if you're playing a stupid Neversoft version of Shenmue or a skateboarding game. So the question is "Tony Hawk had to be a servant to get pro?". What's really funny is how senseless most goals are, i asked myself manytimes: "Is this a clown's dream?", "Am I watching Tom and Jerry?". What? You're saying you don't mind about this? Ok, it's missing something, i'd say it's completely boooooring, 'cause you have to do these senseless goals to advance and watch your "story", get new levels, etc (Get all somethings in one combo). This isn't Shenmue where you can follow a local while you're changin' to some tv channel, be ready for thousands of retries of senseless goals.
- Oh c'mon... be happy! This is Underground!!
This is an underground/custom version of the game right? Ok, but the body/skater edit features are still poor. You can't edit for real, like color of eyes, type of mouth, etc (Neversoft is playing around with serious stuff, allowing us only to edit the nose of the skaters so we can create a skater looking like a monkey. This is really goofing around with features). And it seems that most gamemakers now are afraid of making women with bikini/bra only, so i would like to say one thing, and one thing only: Women with bikini/bra only isn't porn!!
The way to scale body is still somewhat pathetic, it seems that you'll end up creating someone with the chest of a gorilla sometimes. This game has lack of accessories for you to be a really underground and unique skater , like more cool gloves, piercings, stuff for the neck like bling bling, etc, it's a lot that's missing. And to tell the truth, i'm really tired of Neversoft's 3D clothes/items, i think they need to get some new designers urgently. If you're older than 18, buy BMX XXX and you'll know what i mean with really cool accessories/custom clothes, etc.
- Lack of cool cheats / Lack of cool secret stuff to unlock
Oh man, even this?!? Where's m'a slowmo? The cheats are a great ace for the lifespan of THPS series, but this version of THPS brands you with the "most no fun" cheats of their collection, so stop dreaming about the future of skateboarding and to be Morpheus or Neo, you won't fly with your skateboard around here. Also, this is the worst THPS version when it comes to secret characters, Private Carrera is gone, Daisy isn't original and the real secret characters are kindda stupid/no fun. Besides the THPS2 levels (wich are pretty dark and with bad textures) you won't get too much like you expect.

The most annoying thing for me in this game is that they created a close to real physics to the skate/board when you bail, so, if you bail the skate will react almost like a real one. So, why on earth they did that if when you get up the skate will magically appear under your feet?! I know, the game would become harder, but they really could find a way, an option called "Sim Mode" or something, when Sim Mode is on you should have to go get your skate wherever it fell, and end your session if it brakes.
- Items
Now talking about items, there aren't cool items around on this game. Just imagine how could it be fun if you could find some "real" secret items climbing buildings and finding secret places. If you find an item you're probably doing a goal, or unlocking some... well, i won't spoil... what isn't enough. You know it isn't enough, and if you know what i mean you can start thinking that walking and wondering around on foot's lifespan is badly affected by this.
- Keeping it real! Well... at least let's simulate ok?
Ok, let's see. In the beginning of the game you have a house, right? This house/room was completely made and it's the place where you stay when your editing a skater. So, why on earth you can't enter/visit it when you're roaming around New Jersey?! There is Peralta's Skateshop, right? (They made the main part too), so why you can't visit it when your skating? Like i mentioned, when you bail you should go pick your board again, and end your session when it brakes. If it brakes you could have to get one board, walking only on foot, this is where the skateshops could get into action (and your money), all the levels should have skateshops, they could even be all from Peralta to make things easy. These are the real deals for the lifespan, but i can't see features like these! I sometimes wonder why the game has so many items when you can't interact with them (at least some fake interaction could do the job!).
You may think, "well, these things aren't necessary...". So, in return i would like to ask you something. Why is Rockstar one of the most popular gamemakers and why they have the most popular games like GTA (Kids are crazy about this game, you know it) and Max Payne? Simple, Rockstar does almost an half of what i'm saying. Let's take Max Payne as an example. Max Payne ISN'T a game of free roaming, but if you notice, you can use or interact with almost every item on the game, that increases a bit the lifespan even on this action game, the game can be sweet for you, free roam lover gamer, and very sweet for who's watching you playing, these are the big steps for somebody on your house to take a while to watch you, that's the most important step to that lil phrase that goes like "The day when your father will sit and play with you". THUG series really need much more features, it really isn't what i was thinking it should be. Oh yeah? You think i don't got some ideas? So let me tell you, on a game like this we need to remember the best momments of our journey, features like camera effects, photo album, more people around the levels, places to get in around the levels, etc, should already exist on THPS4, and i still can't see these.
We're still far from making things like free roaming games a lil way of life (If we only think about money that's even worst). Since NES, we're evolutin', but we have to avoid these critical errors or we'll be a lot of time on the same place, things that could be done in 5 years only showing up after 15 or more years. So, you may start to think: "Damn! I could have born a bit later on..."

With lots of critical glitches, it can't go further than 13, and i would give it less if it wasn't for the lil' graphics quality upgrade.

Not a very original playlist, and it's completely unstable. There are lots of tracks, but i'm sh'ure you'll turn off lots of them too. The voices are pretty good, but the female character's voice is pretty annoying.
_ Gameplay / Story _ 11/20
The rating is fair, and you know it. The story is really, really, really bad, you'll see phrases like "Keep it Real" when you're supposed to fly (well, almost). With the not "that" good features like Create-a-Deck and Create-a-Trick, the gameplay goes down (God! If BMX XXX has over 2000 tricks, i don't know why the latest THPS series can't have more than 100 tricks!)

Since i can't go pick up my board when i bail, and can't roam around to find cool secrets, enter buildings, etc, i (and probably you too) won't take too much time walking off your skateboard. But we all know THPS series give us some good time skating, so 14 is fair.

The create-a-trick is cool, and graphics and sound were great but easy mode in career mode I could do any trickon flat ground. The unlockable things are cool like Iron man and the Level Hotter Than Hell. But it could improve on some areas. There are alot of levels too Including three levels from thps 2 like Old School II. Overall pretty good considdering 129 goals on carreer mode. most of them are easy though. Driving a car isnt much fun and all running is good for is acid drops which come in handy in the Hawaiian level so both are pretty useless.---

The reason it got a 7 though is because its unrealistic. I mean like, grinding a pole for 10 secounds hile changing the move then jumping off into a manual to do another couple of hundered tricks really ins't possible. Good game, And it is certainly worth the money. The next Tony hawk's number 5 is really gona be great. ;-)

Anyways this game is crap if your going to bye somthing WORTH your $$$ then buy a REAL skateboard and get your butt outthere and skate unless you wanna do a 1440 off a 2 foot gap what ever you want...POSERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
| Fun! | | aeglos0 from Wanakee, USA says (21/Feb/2004): | This game was very fun! Most of the goals were easy to accomplish. For me, I was stuck on the one were you had to jump over the bridge. Don't know why you would have to do that, but okay. The graphics were realistic! I loved the idea of having your skater get more and more battered over time. Voice acting was good, too. Most games don't have that. I found driving the cars and walking a great feature! That really was an advance! Now I can explore levels more easily, and don't have to brake my skateboard to look at stuff.
My biggest problems were not finding codes to get all the levels for freeskating, but that makes sense. Also the faces in create a skater are kind of odd looking. It would be really cool to be able to design your own face without having to download it. I noticed that Erik always got into trouble. After a while I got sick of pulling him out of trouble over and over and over. Oh well.
But overall I really enjoyed playing. It was better than the first couple. I liked some of the newer features and park building is so much more enjoyable! when I get the chance i plan on buying it!
| THUG is the Definitive Extreme Sports title | | Doggman from Vice City, FL says (16/Feb/2004): | Tony Hawk... Tony Hawk... Before the THPS series (and the Simpsons 300th episode) I don't really think anyone knew much about him. And yet, he has spawned 4 great extreme sports games, and one simply amazing one, THUG is a brilliant, addictive game and I'll tell you exactly why:
Gameplay 10/10:
Addictive gameplay, with more flips, grabs, manuals, grinds, etc than you'll probably even be able to pull off at the end of the day. When you start off, you get 20,000 points, and think, wow, that's brilliant! And with practice, you soon end up collecting as much as 5,000,000 from x100 tricks. Not to mention the fact you don't have to put up with those ugly skaters like Bobby B and old Bony himself, you can create your own skater to play with, hey, you can even put your own handsome mug on your skater, cool huh? And there's the create-a-deck, park or trick to have fun with. And for THPS fans, you can get off your board and walk, and even though the driving bits are really bad, you can walk (jog)! You can even do cave man tricks, where your skater gets on his boards and tricks at the same time, getting more points, cool or what?
Lifespan 10/10:
If you can complete the long, challenging story mode on sick mode, and complete 129/129, then you can still just skate for the fun of it, and get high scores and stuff. It's got years of life in it, trust me.
Graphics 8/10:
Decent enough character animation, though the buildings look murky and really juist there to get in your way, not for display or anything, and the water hasn't really got as much effort as it should. We expect more from the graphics of 2004, most games have moving hair these days. But they're still great graphics, just more, brilliant 2003 graphics maybe... Who cares...
Sound 9/10:
Rock and punk do my head in, so I turned the entire Rock and Punk selection off! You can do that now! So I only have to listen to Hip Hop! That's great! And as for each type of Music, you get roughly 20 songs which is great. The skate boards make really realistic noises, and change on different surfaces. But you can't choose your create-a-skaters voice... Now my tough, black gangsta sounds like a wimpy sk8er punk... Oh well...
All in All: Buy it! Now! If you ain't got it, get!
| Better Than All Other 4 Put Together! | | A gamer says (7/Feb/2004): | First off, I would like to say that this game was a big surprise to me. I never would have thought that it would have been possible to make a game so awesome. I thought that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 was good, but this knocks all the other skateboarding games out! I really liked the new skate as you not a pro because it extends and shows people what it would be like to be a pro. I also liked the getting off of your board thing. That also extended the tricks and things you can do. If you want a really good skateboarding game that can actually take you into the game, this is the one you need to get. One last thing is that you can download your face into the game so you can actually pretend that you are yourself. The only thing wrong with this game is that they hadn't thought about making it sooner.

The story mode is a nice addition to their arsenal of weapons. The music isnt like the origina ones like in 2 but its ok. The videos of the skaters are kool. Always hard never soft. But what aould be kool for tony hawk games is mix underground with gta3. The main character could be a skater and a gang member or something. They could tone down the violence for the little kids but it would be ausome. DIe hard fans of both like me would be so pleased. Hey neversoft! Hook up with rockstar and make an unbeatable game.

They gave me the ability to do nothing.Ironman was pretty tight however I liked the Kiss level. The ATV was cool but every time you get air it goes out of balance.The Cars were well done but there was nowhere to drive around I was always going out of balance and getting dumb remarks made at me like you suck dude go home and cry. The Evil Tiki was my favorite part of the game but the reward was Venice from THPS2 which SUCKED.Vancoover had the most stuff to do.I would of liked it if this one had more secret areas like on THPS2.I did like braking through the windows however. Also I liked the game but skating is boring its just a bunch of metrosexual sissy goth people falling down and braking bones you guy should go work instead of waisting your time on a skateboard. If any of you skaters that are afended by this want a fight come to Juniper Park in Maspeth and do something about it.
| buy it now! | | brad from West Midlands, England says (17/Jan/2004): | i think thug is da bomb you get to walk around, climb,hang,drive and obviously skate!the graphics rule you get to see blood, tombstones, hockey pucks, bum's houses, nut vendors, beach balls, milk bottles and pineapples.you also hear the sound of pain, a car and a hooker getting down to buisness.the bad thing about thug is it is too unrealistic but its good how the levels are linked together.at first i thought it was going to be a copy of thps4 but i was so wrong!theres online mode(firefight rocks), you have to earn your stats, you can find different levels and create a deck, level and sk8ta.and although theres all that in it it still only takes 2 hours to complete all goals, stats, gaps and trick goals and all for 40 quid come on neversoft lower the price a bit!!! if you haven't got it buy it but wait a while for the price to lower.because it is like the grand theft auto of sk8tin' neversoft may make a pack with all 5 games in 1 now thats a must have!!!!!!!!!!
| Tony does it again | | B1G K3V from Manchester UK says (6/Jan/2004): | Tony hawks underground produces the goods yet again, great gameplay, task orientated stats instead of just buying them, loads of levels to both be unlocked and found (for retro levels) fab! and the slam jam skate park rules! Great moves and the adition of the create trick is a great idea (maybe a little unrealistic but isnt most of tony?) The one thing i was a little put out about was the poor rendering of the cars, but hey, you cant have everything! Thug online play well, what can i say? and my skater looks like me! how cool is that! Almost every aspect can be personalised, from the face, body, right down to the socks and the proportion of the entire body! And my skateboard with my name across it in red against the black and yellow stars! if you dont own it already i recomend you add it to your collection NOW!
| Good, but....... | | You from Oregon, USA says (3/Jan/2004): | We all know that THUG is the best Tony Hawk game to date, everyone knows that. You get to skate, run, and drive cars at the same time, you have missions, or jobs, like getting someones skateboard out of a tree, and the game has very good gameplay, with simple controls. But the bad things about THUG is that the missions are lame, stupid, or sometimes can't even beat at all. And if your missions is running for something, and your on a roof, it's hard to control your person because he/she runs to fast, and falls off. And plus, your real name doesn't come up till the end, but meantime, your name is You. "Hey You, I need you to do something for me." Anyway, THUG is good, but some problems, and it should be for rental only. You buy it, and can beat it in an hour. Waste of $$$.

I mean I became pro and beated the game within 2-3 hours!! and you couldn't pick the pros and you had to be some skater punk
or as I like to call them is posers!! Except for the ones I created, I mean like Tony should have left it like Tony Hawk 3,
or Tony Hawk 4 as Career mode, and he should have left it as you
able to pick the pros in the story mode at least. Second of all
I think that Tony should have kept the pros look like from Tony Hawk 4, I mean like what is up withe Eric Koston, Andrew Reynolds, Arto Sarri,and Rodney Mullen!! Imean Rodney Mullen in Tight Pants, Andrew's, And Arto's heads shaved Eric koston wearing a wig!! or is it his actual hair! But anyway Overall this game is Awesome I mean Better Specials, more Freestyling, Better Levels, And even Old levels like the school 2 From Tony Hawk 2, and even New Pros!! You Should at least rent this game before buying it!!
