Enjoyable45002

Cam "Ned" from Melbourne, Australia says (7/Jul/2005):
I enjoy playing Warhammer 40,000 at my local Games Workshop store but it could be because I have been playing the hobby for a couple of years. I think it is good that Citadel miniatures and Games Workshop joined up with THQ and KUJU to make the game. Now I can finally see what the guns do to the enemy and what troops with chainswords do. All in all I enjoy the game because I am a Games Workshop fan. The game has inspired me to do an Imperial Guard army (the human army) and make an Imperial Trenches board (the first and second Levels).

This is good but crowded at some times (it is war)42723

Kallum Shah (Ghost:alpha project) from Torqauy, devon says (2/Oct/2004):
I like warhammer 40k because I like the monsters and weapons of mass destruction. It has monsters ranging from choas marine to a lizard warrior (cool). The weapons also range from an energy discharge(very explosive bomb) to a highly destructive basilisk battle tank! You may not under stand the meaning of these so let me explain... WAR!! Highly explosive action which makes this game a explosive success! You can even try the stealth operations as well as reading the books.Imagine if everyone collided in war!! disgusting. So why not just play the game to save all the fatality of trying it in real life.

Good game But not Mind boggling38186

Josh Soto from Indiana,USA says (12/Jan/2004):
I would have to say that this game overall was pretty good, it had some interesting themes, some pretty wild sceneary, and the movies were cool. I must agree with the other's when I say that the training level could have been created better.(it was kinda boring)But once I got passed the training, things got more intersting. The trench levels of the game was cool, I loved the sceneary and how not just you was blowing everything up.
The graphics were ok I think that the AI units could have been created with more detail and not so blurring looking.(I would like to see my enemy not just a choppy image), except for the space marines, wow they were cool looking, but I must object to the look of the chaos marines(NEED MORE DETAIL).I was hoping to see an evil conevil looking marine, but instead you'll get a choppy image (go figure). I also think that THQ could have come with better ways for your enemy to die.(If you shoot him in the head, with a SHOTGUN!!! don't you think the head should come off-heelllooo!) But overall the graphics were ok.(needs work).
The sounds of world around you were cool(bombs going off, tanks moving around, shooting, gas leaks, fire burning, etc.)
but the AI units they sound like there mentle, continually repeating themselves(SHUT UP,Someone quick pass them a dictionary). The guns were neat, but the sounds are to similar to each other(pass the ear muffs) except for a few.(For those who have played the game you know which guns i speak of). Some characters in the game sounded like they needed a speach therapist.(Help there is a computer stuck in his throut).
Some areas of the game just had too many glitchs ,I had too die Like 50 times before I could move on(Boring). After a while you'll begin to want to cheat just so you can get to the next level. The sucky part about that is YOU CAN'T until you beat the game one time.(What a bunch of crap)Also I didn't like when it took a whole clip or 2 just to kill 1 guy(they're not superman)
I am a fan of the Warhammer 40k world and I enjoyed the game, when I wasn't dying by 50 mentles in one room who can't shoot worth crap but still succeeded in killing you, cause I found it awesome to see the charactors in animated motion. Anyone who is a 40k fan like me would like this game even with its flaws. but the truth is your just going to have to play it before you can decide to like it or hate it.

Not bad if you know the story37307

A gamer from denver says (24/Dec/2003):
This game while patchy in places and suffering from simalar flaws to MOST games is still very enjoyable
graphics are ok little low on poly count which is understadable due to the platform

gameplay is tolerable not perfect but nothing is

not origanal in any way shape or form
sound was poor tohugh
i agree with those who say wait tell its reduced in cost though
Kais is a firewarior a trooper of the tau empire read the book and youll see that while not exact its pretty dang close
as for the weapons and other stuff 2 weapons was not introduced in halo it was first used in jp trepasser
in all not as good as half life but on par with alo in terms of fun.

awful game, waste of time, dont bother37307

A gamer says (17/Dec/2003):
Graphics: They were pretty old, about a 1998 'superb' graphics. Well in 1998 u would have said that it was good...not NOW. The low poly count and the VERY basic colouring of the atmosphere was shocking. I personally collect tau myself...but was the graphic awful in its appearance and the linear and 'non-smooth' texture. it requires the latest update in graphics software, and i emphasis software to show that u dont need a good graphic card, just the updated software graphics program. THQ should start producing better graphic games for PC. I wonder y didnt Games Workshop request Seirra or even EA to create their games...at least their status in overall PC games is exellent

Sound: sound was repeated over and over again... every gun sounded the same, ('Bang bang')Speech was not even present in areas where tau commanders talked to u. tau language was a crap in its voice recording and the conversion of tau speech to 'reality'

Gameplay: bad AI and average story. Even in the most difficult setting the game could be finished in about 2 - 3 hrs. same area appearances and horror 'remake' of dooms 'find the key' aims. Pointless to the fact that finding keys is ur objective

Lifespan: i'd say u get bored of it in 2 hrs. lasting in the actual world of PC games: 1 week. Not worth the money ppl.

Originality: very original as it shows the creativity of "warhammer 40k" and its interactive story. But Graphics and story plots are the body of a good game, not just one of them

well another poorly produced game by THQ and Warhammer 40k itself. I was very dissappointed at the amount of effort put into a PC game...never match the other more popular titles life Max payne 2 or Halo.

Wasted $29.9936633

Zenic from United States says (6/Dec/2003):
Although I spent less time playing the Warhammer 40K game, I too have ventured into its crazed universe. More or less as a spectater, anyways, I agree that every GW game has been bad. This only meets up with each games horrible gameplay.

First off:

Graphics: The graphics were in no way ground breaking. All the models are very low poly counts. I'f I took a guess I'd say the vehicles were all around 200-300 Poly count while the Tau models were around 150 Poly Count. (For those who dont know what a Poly is in 3D terms, a Poly is a flat surface/plain, only a 3D model is many of these that make up a model). The textures weren't horrible, and the Partical Effects weren't anything special.

Graphics: I'd give a 6.

Next on my list, is sound.. now this is a Major issue.

Sound: Alright, can you say "GIVE ME A GOD DAMNED VOICE ACTOR?"

Through the entire game I heard almost NO voice acting for objectives or mission outlines. This is a major drawback. 1) The game gets boring quickly, Its shoot shoot and more shoot, I get very bored with the sounds of the same things being said over and over, such as "Its Quiet" and the sounds of "Bang Bang" constantly. The only background noise was a variety of Explosions and Laser sounds. Most of which were poorly done. The movies weren't that bad... the sounds were pretty good in those, but than again their rendered movies.

As for the Gameplay?

Gameplay: It reminded me a lot of Team Fortress. It was much too linaer, and in the end it ended up being a waste of time. The guns were interesting, but around level 9 you just start to stop giving a $#< remove me > at ! about everything and want to just beat the game.

This game is nothing special, infact in about 2 months no ones going to remember this game.

However, it was a step in the right direction, but it just didn't cut it when it came to breaking any boundarys in the gaming world.

I feel sorry for THQ for spending money making this, and really sorry for GW for making fools out of themselves again.

They need to stick to making plastique models and leave the game making up to the professionals.

Kick ass, one of my fav console shooters!36619

Scampi from Canada says (5/Dec/2003):
It's a lot like Halo, but not guite as good. If your a Warhammer 40k buff then you MUST play this game! It's got pretty good graphics and easy controls, the only problem I had was after a LONG time of playing it gets a bit repetitive. The weapons are pretty cool but the Tau arsenal gets tapped dry pretty quick from usage. Most o' the time ya' gotta resort to imperial weapons. I like the multiplayer, truly excellent. I could only wish that there were more excesible weapons for some mass destruction. I really like the game cause i loove 40k.

best FPS this year!36104

john from maryland, USA says (26/Nov/2003):
This game is awesome!!! The graphics are great and though the accuracy of the guardsmen scared me sometimes (I play guard in real life and believe me they do not shoot that well!)I was impressed after just playing through the trench mission.
With the addition of the rail rifle and weapons like it this game rocks. I’m couldn’t believe how much the designers used the text from the books when making it. however there were a few things I pictures from the boxed game that I see every day anyway and it got me distracted and poof I died(stupid stormtroopers...)well once I stopped admiring the otherwise beautiful scenery I moved on and got stuck in terrain for about 3 straight tries after that. Luckily this occurrence was rare afterwards. I’ve just about finished the game and I’ve lent the demo out to several people and they are definitely buying it or have already done so. the most fun part about this was the reaction to being shot and the ways the commissars just kept coming for the first few level (like a little head shot is going to stop them...) the most unrealistic thing to me seems to be the fact that you are an inexperienced fire warrior and you are sent with only the help of maybe 2 others to rescue an ethereal (a leader of the tau) Overall I think this is possibly one of the best games of the year.

wow35842

liam from UK says (22/Nov/2003):
When i first got the game i went straight onto two player mode but was disapointed as it wasn't very long i felt the same about the training mode but no game is perfect, however, my oppinion changed when i went to single player, it shows what lenths these designers go to bring you realistic settings, as the movie sequences are great, the tiny details are the best though, like when you get hit the screen goes fuzzy. As a collector of "Warhammer 40K" i have been waiting for them to bring out a "Warhammer 40K" game for ages now and i feel that they have made the game like a real battlefeild with all of the spaceships flying overhead. But there are some bugs in it, even though they are sometimes annoying, they are quite funny, especialy when the Imperials take out five of their own men by firing rockets at a wall, and getting stuck in the scenery which lends a hand to completing the game as your enemies become helpless and you can just stand and laugh, admire the detail, then blast them. The length on this game is great as many games, even though being good, are too short, and on the other hand, some of them are too long and utter rubish. I had trouble with the game at first as the controls weren't easy to get used to, just like "Time Splitters", but after the first level you get the hang of it. Speaking of the first level i thought it was not as good as the rest of it but a great first attempt at a "Warhammer 40K" game anyway.

YARG!! with spikey death!35079

Dukes Of Devonshire from Exford, England says (10/Nov/2003):

Right, here's your overview: You're about to be thrown into tonw of the most nightmare situations ever and your are not expected to win. Here's the fun bit: Do it right and you not only survive and become a total hero (and naturally bragging rights) you've just played through one of the sweetest games for the PS2.

As far as FPS games go, Fire Warrior isn't that special. The 2 gun system was ripped straight out of Bungies' Masterpeice (I really don't need to say Halo do I?) And the controll scheme is the good old tried and tested double thumbstick system. (*COUGH* Red Faction) The graphics are nice. Very nice. Red Faction was mediocre, RF 2 a bit 'So what.' Now we all Know HALO rocked our worlds, and fire warrior has a few moments that do match this godlike game. Namely all the chaos moments. The Sky boils. The walls squirm, and some stunningly detailed player models are present.

Downers:
*The first 3-4 levels suck. Really do leave you wondering what the point in playing any further is. Then things get more interisting.

*The only fun tau weapon is the burst cannon. It is however, tragically bad. It's usefull for approx a minute and a hlaf or real game play. Then you get a chaos Bolter and the game redeems itsself again. The Rail rifle, the ultimate Tau sniper-rifle death weapon has a stunning firing graphic, and the most &%$%& annoying firing noise possible!!! ARG.

*The training level is utterly dull. No game as yet has a cool training level.

*You sometimes just get stuck on random pieces of scenery. Then the game needs resetting. This is the most annoying part of the game. That said, I only encountered it three or four times, and I was doing very badly when it happened anyways.

*AI still bad. Not even halo got te AI just right. Enemies still never ever learn. They are always in the same place. They run at you firing. I've seen rocket launcher armed marines kill themselves by shooting bits of scenery right infront of them.

*Lack of Geo-Mod. Come on! Red Factions wall destroying antics whern't even present in Halo!! Bring 'em on!!

The Good Bits:
*All non plinky weapons. (Non plinky weapon don't use energy or plasma or boring stuff. I mean Bullets, grenades missiles and hardcore Bolters.) Plasma and pulse weapons are strictly star trek fan teritory I'm afraid. Now the Melta rifle... w00t!

*Level design (Bar the trench levels, pretend you didn't see them.)

*Nice little touches like the way your gun overheats or the way your screen blurs when your hit. And the loading screen.

*Freakin lovely ending to the game. The last few levels... eah... You'll just be sitting and staring.

Fire warrior is a great game. Realy good single player. Not revolutionary. Not worth every front page in every mag (MGS). It is however, good fun, atmospheric, dark, funny (yes, voice acting is always funny), chaotic and head over tail immersing.

Buy it. For it's single player.

If you want multiplayer fun.... go play Counter Strike. Fire warrior is tragic in multiplayer. Horrible level layout. No ammo. Appaulingly few levels. Nasty to confgure and handle. Why oh why didn't they use focus groups?!?! Or just plain copy Halo. Thats godlike. But nuff said really. Fire warrior is up there with the greats. Just still hasn't learn't what Bungie have.. whats wrong with these people....

Why couldn't they have made this game all those years ago?34918

Wellsie from Brisbane, Australia says (8/Nov/2003):
Only one word springs to my mine when i play Fire Warrior......FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC. And the best part is you don't have to know anything about Games Workshop to understand the game (but it helps a lot). My only gripe is why couldn't GW make a game like this all those years ago? Just pick up and play...its that simple. After all those lame attempts, GW & THQ are on a winner here, and i havent even played it online yet. Admittedly it owes a lot to Halo ( only being able to carry 2 weapons at a time and the personal sheild) but thats where it ends. The array of weapons is almost endless and true to GWs right down to the finest detail. Bolters fire the self-propeled, caseless mass reactive shells depicetd in GW books. Player and NPC models are true to the minitures. Levels look stunning and the plot is so involving you actually feel like you are Kais. Unfortunatly it aint perfect. I often found myself stuck in the scenery, particulary around doors. The enemy AI is a bit stupid. Ive seen imperial storm troopers actually try and shoot through each other to get me, or fall back right into the path of a grenade and headshots don't kill out right!!!!

To sum it all up, Fire Warrior is a brilliant game which can be enjoyed by everyone....not just GW fans (which i am one). The cut scenes are brillinant and well made. Can't wait to play it online :) :) :) :)

Errrr... Not all that great.34918

Apathetic Astartes from England not the damn UK says (6/Nov/2003):
Right ok, this game I have to admit I bought because of its 40k connection. I bought it knowing in my heart of hearts that like all the other GW licensed games it would be utter dross. I was nearly pleasantly surprised. Nearly. The training was inexcusably mediocre, boring and so uninteresting that I nearly switched it off then and there. Then I moved onto the real game, holy sh*t! This might be quite good! Flames, gothic architecture, LeMan Russ tanks, Chainswords (seriously annoying!). For half an hour I was impressed. Then the flaws showed through. The early guns are lame, the intial attraction of actually firing Lasguns and Las pistols were outweighed by just how inacurate they are. The Tau weapons being innaccurate and unpowerful as well. Then the soundbites, oh my god. Shocking. How many are there? Two? Rubbish. The friendly AI are insufferable. Their feet clip through the scenery, they ignore your presence, they shoot you if you walk in front of them. They die within ten seconds of appearing. The enemy AI are stupid, they are worryingly accurate with the woefully inaccurate Las guns. Augh!!!! Then there is the actual gameplay, linear and over simplified. Coloured keys?? Is this back to Doom 2? Last and least in my book is the multiplayer which looks poor, more arena's are needed more modes of play are needed. More all round is needed. A lot more.
I am offended by this game in the end because it is what I thought it might be, and not what it should be.
Games Workshop need to put their licence to something worthwhile, the bones and ideas are all there, but I for one have come to expect something more from an FPS. I didn't want to say this but Halo takes a dump on this from a great height.

A superb game though flawed34731

Seventh from Hong Kong, China says (5/Nov/2003):
Fire Warrior is a great first person shooter, boasting excellent player/software interaction, a diverse array of weapons systems and great design. Whilst it benefits from the enormously detailed history provided by the Warhammer 40,000 back-story, the plot is never convoluted or too "speccy", making it ideal for old-school Warhammer adepts and newcomers alike.

The set design and levels are well realized, with good attention to use of colour and form - though texture is a little lacking. Character movement is fairly smooth, although one's opponents occasionally have a bit of a "moonwalk" and glide around a little unrealistically. The Tau technology and systems are both interestingly ergonomic and bizarrely tasteful, providing a nice juxtaposition to the pseudo-Fascist Imperial insignia, gothic hallways and monolithic architecture. There is something depressing, post-industrial and of course very British about the grimness of the 40,000 universe.

I must, however, list a few gripes of both a gameplay and technical nature, which prevented me from giving this game a score higher than 7.

Firstly, and most obviously, there are several bugs in the program which can cause sticks. Happily these are few and far between. In fact, some parts that appear to be bugged are actually escapable.

Secondly, Brian Blessed milks his part a little heavily - although of course, that's what Brian Blessed does.

Thirdly, and most importantly, the designers took an astonishingly old-technology perspective for a game which is supposed to be set around 38,000 years in the future. Despite having forcefields, hyper-advanced biotechnology, and the ability to converse in any language, none of the species involved has managed to create a weapon which takes less than four seconds to reload! To all intents and purposes, Kais is a triple-hard badass alien dude, but he's constantly let down by his shoddy kit. Kais' carbine pulse rifle looks pretty impressive until you try to put a new magazine in the thing - a process that seems to take around nine days, by which time you've been shot dead by every recruit in the Imperial Guard / Space Marines / whomsoever takes a pot shot at you. Kais' suit can also withstand the vacuum of space and concussion from numerous pojectile weapons, but can't survive a fall down a 15-foot hole or, puzzlingly, into water.

Lifts and communications devices are run via "nuclear reactors" and "electrical power". What?? I say again, this is supposed to be a little under 40,000 years from now. One hundred years ago we were using steam power to move trains. Haven't we moved on? The producers of this game should have had a couple more concept-checking meetings - or at least have watched Minority Report.

This is a solid, gripping game, and can easily compete with the best first person shooters on the market. It's also nice to see a game in which the humans are the bad guys, whilst returning to the sci-fi stock (yet ever so pertinent) tradition of fighting a power-mad and xenophobic empire. Let's hope the second time around they'll work out how to train Kais to reload his gear faster than the time it takes my granny to change a car tire.

This game rocks34567

Cozmo from England - Bedforsshire says (2/Nov/2003):
ok after i got this game i loaded it up and went straight to the multiplayer. After playing the multiplayer in such games as red faction and red faction I expected much much more. No bots - none and only 2 levels. i could have probably forgiven this if you could unlock more during the game (like red faction 2) but unfortunatly it was not to be.
After my disapointment i started the game. It was amasing as i used to collected space marines and imperial guard it was great to be fighting it the tenches with them. after watching a tanks and artilly go over my head and troops rushing to other parts of the trenches i thought this is the best game eva. ;et down here and there because you and the computer characters can be trapped in the scenery (which really bugged me and impressed me sumtimes). the graphics are amasing ive seen better but once you have a 8 foot high space marine standing over you youi learn to really apprecaite it, especailly as an ultramarine got trapped in the sceinary and couldn't move or shoot and i admired the detail befor running him though with my sword!
weopons - Only being able to carry two weopons does not in anyway ruin this game. infact it improves it because it makes it realistic. Other then your guns (which are dam accurate to how GW describe them - especially the bolter which i used none stop) you carry and tau blade, great for sneaking up on your enamies and running them though. hahahaha
graphics - as i now collect battlefleet gothic (the 40k fleet of ships not troops) seeing the space maring battlebarge and then trying to board it was great, the chaos marines looked great but its a shame only 3 races were included. what about the necrons or the elder!

definatly a game to recomend to others that enjoy the actual game but the multiplayer is bad

A big let down34182

Malick from Wales UK says (27/Oct/2003):
I am an avid GW fan, have been collecting their minaitures for over 18 years, I bought this game in the hope that if would do the 40K universe and GW some sort of justice ( lets face GW games in the past have been lame ), unfortunatley it hasn't, the single player game was slow and if there was a lot going on on the screen it alsmost ground to a halt, at some points during the game, as many people have mentioned you tend to get stuck to the scenery, as do the enemies making them incredibly easy to kill ( i was stood directly infront of the chaos dreadnought while he was stuck on a pillar and it didn't Fire a single shot ), the graphics are very basic and could of easily been written for the PSone not the PStwo, ther is no random generation for the enemies as they appear in exactly the same place each time, you can almost predict when you are going to get attacked,(the game is that see-through), the enemy AI is appaling they blatently run into your fire ( occasionally they will seek cover to reload ), on to the subject of terminators, they are supposed to honoured marines allowed to don terminator armour because they are the elite of the elite and yet they couldn't hit the side of a bus if they were on it as do alot of they enemies, and i'm talking about the game on hard setting.

The multiplayer side is possibly the worst i have ever played, 2 maps for each game type DM,TDM,CTF, 6 maps alltogether thats utterly disgusting especially when compared to red faction 2 and timsplitters 2, the collision detection varies wildley between the different skins, no option for bots at all to join in the fun.

in short this game is terrible the only feature i liked about is the very first couple of levels when you are assaulting an imperial guard bunker, explosions all over the place, ground shaking, le mann russ tanks crossing over the trenches above your head, but this does not save the game, i traded the game in to my local game exchange shop and got 20 quid but still means i have lost 13 quid onit.

HALO has absolutely nothing to worry about at all, this game is a very cheap and nasty copy and pales in comparison, i fro one will not be buying any more GW licensed games unless something very radical is done.

And you called warhammer fans nerds???33970

babbyc from belfast, uk says (24/Oct/2003):
Now you can understand the attraction of the warhammer 40,000 universe! I cannot believe the attention to detail in this game! every gun, every vehicle, every troop type is easy to spot! i bought redfaction 2 3 weeks before this, and although it has geo mod and a great multiplayer system, this game beats it into the ground! u have to learn really quickly what weapon is needed for what, and you must conserve ammo! i blasted loads of imperial guard with my plasma gun - went back onto the deck of the imperial cruiser and im facing a whole squad of raptor chapter sapce marines armed with 1 grenade, a tau carbine and an auto gun, each with 100 rounds max of ammo!
if you ever buy a game, buy this one. although not every one will be able to appreciate this, warhammer 40k fans will not believe their eyes when they stand amongst the gothic structures of the imperial cruiser or see a leman russ battle tank cross a trench in front of them!
The game is so engrossing that every time i see a space marine now I come out in a cold sweat, wondering how many there is and if ihave the fire power to take them on without turining into tomato soup!
great game!

tired and old33853

adh from Lancs, England says (22/Oct/2003):
As the summary says tired game play and old school graphics.

A relatively enjoyable play, but the graphics in certain areas are very poor, bad texture joins with some textures even downloaded from the net, oh dear!

There are some places in the levels where you can get stuck and therefore have to replay the level from the start. Some of the scripted cutscenes don't trigger and it's impossible then to get any further, again you'll restart the level, very annoying.

I was very disappointed, Kuju beat 24 other games developers for this title, and have produced a below average product, what a waste. But the 40k fans out there appear to love it, "best game ever" come on guys-not by a long shot!

Overall if u fancy a fun 'shoot-em-up' game, then go out and buy Fire Warrior, but wait until it gets reduced in price.

GOOD GAME!33792

Alex Fox from Bristol, UK says (21/Oct/2003):
This game is amazing. Not only does it show of the ps2's graphics but the gameplay is immense. I am alightly diapointed that you do not get to fight tyranids or any of the other races as this would be very kool and nerveing. The multiplayer feature is not the bes i have seen as you only begin with two maps and there is no option that i have found that enables you to include bots in your games but oh well it rocks. By the way any one got cheats to unlock the multiplayer levels email them to me thanks! =-**-=

Heaven for any 40k player33783

Phailex from New South Wales, Australia says (20/Oct/2003):
This game was definately one of the best first person shooters i have ever played, its truth to the actual warhammer 40k game was brilliant. It had everything that would be desired from a tau, chaos, or imperium collector. The depth at which the artists have created everything is tremendous.
The game gave the player the opertunity to play under all types of different circumstances, on the planet, in the ships, in the planet core, just brilliant.

When i originally saw this game, i thought that the graphics would be blocky and out of proportion, but to my dearest delight, everything was crisp and perfect, how they did it, is amazing.

The gameplay itself, was great, i gad so much fun cruising around levels, bumping into switches, doors and of course Chaos marine. The most important element of this game that i haven't mentioned, the fun factor, EXCELLENT!!!
the only time boredom came into it was when i kept dying at the hands of those damn dreadnoughts, but as soon as they were overcome, the fun factor leapt right back up again.

The game is one of the first in a potential line of games workshop products that can be brought from the board to the screen. Everything from blood bowl, to inquisitor, to mordheim.

Keep the games coming you geniuses, and anyone who plays this game, should definately recommend it in the highest regard to anyone they can.
