Better than ever.44223

A gamer from Lansing, Michigan says (24/Feb/2005):
First off, the graphics are even better (didn't think that was even possible after GT3). The shadows and the reflections are eerily perfect. The cars are very detailed and very smooth. The weird "mirage" effect that was in the replays are now gone also. This is a great looking game regardless of platform (by far the best graphics on any game on the PS2, and as good or better than most XBOX games). The windows are less tinted, so you can see the seats (kinda). One of the fun parts is to drive a convertable car where you can see the driver react to the g-forces and such. (And if you look at the driver during the replays, you can actually see his hand move for a shift...impressive details.) One drive down Times Square in the NY track and you can see the details in the buildings (complete with all the ads and sponsors) The most improved part is the sound. In GT3, some of the sounds were disappointing (they got the four cylinders right, along with the six cylinders, but the V8s were not "burbly" enough), but this time it's almost perfection. Now when you watch the 2005 Mustang pass during the replays, a perfect Mustang V8 burbly rumble accompanies it (attached some surround sound speakers for the full effect.) Crazy amount of cars and trucks (yes, there's a SVT Lightning, a Dodge Ram, and even a Honda Element) are available. I also felt that the driving experience was a bit different, but that may not be the case for everyone. Some downsides: The soundtrack could be better. There are so much details, that sometimes, you can see obvious cracks in the landscape. Also, they included spectators and fans on some of the tracks; they look remarkably fake. And to me, the biggest annoyance is the license tests. There's even more tests to take per a license. Oh yeah, remember the thick amount of manuals and notebooks that accompanied GT1 and GT2? Well, the manual that accompanies GT4 is reduced to a few pages that are half advertisements and credits. Whether that is a good or bad thing, it's obvious the money was spent where it should've been: the game. Being a car enthusiast, though, those are very small downsides. Just the sheer amount of cars to test drive is worth it.

Lot's of questions44830

C Mason from Seattle, WA says (10/Jun/2005):
After playing this game for over 12 hours, it is obvious that the programmers at Polyphony spent alot of time giving the graphics
a large boost from GT3, but the selection of performance parts
and the brands to choose from are clandistine. Anybody who is not even educated about racing cars can pick up Hot Rod magazine or Import-Tuner magazine and see within the first 10 pages that GT4 has very little to offer when it comes to tune up parts for the cars. The selection of cars is not that impressive. There are alot of cars that you will never use because they are useless little eurotrash cars with no horsepower. Where are the 57' Chevy's? Ferrari's? Lamborghini's? McClarren F-1's?
Why don't the cars sit lower to the ground when you upgrade the suspension and lower the car. Why do most of the cars sound like
a lawn-mower on crack? Why do all the wheels to choose from look like 14" rims and not 17 or 18?
Why is there no damage, exhaust detonation, suspension spark from the ground when hitting a dip in the road, rain or bad weather that usually takes place in europe?
This all may seem a bit much but to ask for, but it's to be expected from a game that claims to be "The Ultimate Driving Simulator" Maybe they should change it to "Another Underdeveloped Driving Simulator" Come on guys, I mean Need For Speed Underground? You can paint your damn brake calipers if you want,
and pick out your muffler, stickers, rims, etc, etc, and that game isn't even trying to claim to be a realistic simulator (although the drag strip part is very real looking!)

GT4 is the best!!!44678

Jason Roberts from Stanley, North Carolina, USA says (10/May/2005):
GT4 Is with out a doubt the best racing game of all time. The graphics, & sounds are just amazing. The game was worth every penny. If you love racing games, then this is a MUST have game. I have waited a long time for this game, especially after completing 100% of GT3 2 years ago, and it was worth the wait. This is a game that I could never get tired of playing. The races on this game prove that you can drive a racecar because most of these races are very tough to accomplish, especially the mission races where you almost have to be perfect. As a matter of fact, I just completed 100% of GT4, after completing the last mission race #34 which is the toughest race I have ever done. Its very hard to drive around a 13 mile, 176 turn racetrack for 1 lap trying to catch a car thats 123 seconds in front of you, and you can not afford to make any mistakes or lose any seconds what so ever. It took me probably 30 attempts but finally got it, but I love a challenge, thats what makes this game so awesome, and I love the all black Formula GT racecar that you win but only if you complete 100%. The creaters of this game really put a lot of effort in this game and it shows. They make each and every race a challenge, and thats what makes the game #1. I hope sometime in the future they create GT5! I can hardly wait. But for now Ill just have fun racing around the awesome tracks of GT4!

GT4 is an awsome game but still lacking44833

RichieD from SouthFL,USA says (10/Jun/2005):
GT4 is the greatest racing simulation yet. Hundreds of cars to choose from and tons of tracks to race on as well as a drag strip. I like how they've added a the nos option because in some A-spec races, that deffinitely makes the difference. As far as the physics go, the only downside is the whole flying off the track at low speeds, but other than that, atleast all the american muscle cars from GT3 actually stay on the track this time, ie... the corvette race car. The exhaust note in some of the v-8's is really weak and definitely needs to be improved upon in the next GT as well as allowing the muscle cars atleast the opportunity to be tuned to lift off the ground slightly to give them the muscle car appeal they deserve. The license tests on GT4 are a whole lot harder than the previous GT's but you can finally beat the game without having to get all golds on the tests. There's a whole lot more variety as far as vehicle choices. You get to choose from cars, trucks, medium to high power race cars like the Takata Dome NSX, high power races cars like the BMW McLaren, and still the extremely versitile Formula Race Car of which there is only one type in this game unfortunately, unlike GT3 which had about 8 different types of Formula racers. Hands down GT4 is definitely the best all-around race car game made so far for any console.

THEY FORGOT THE SMALL REALISTIC THINGS44388

Joseph from Toronto, Ontario says (23/Mar/2005):
I wouldn't bow down to this game for several reasons mind you I do agree with some of the ppl that say the same thing...grafics, cars, blah blah blah. 1. What's with the turn radius on these cars I understand low end class sure, but the "amazing cars...done up cars" they handle like a sleds! Most of the good cars and especially the expensive cars should be able to corner at more the 60mph; I've even had to stop at some corners in races in order to stay on track and I'm in an STI. I've test driven about 40% of the actual cars normal ppl could go and test drive at their local dealers and the handling in the game is shameful. 2. They should have really gone that one step further and included interiors when you drive in $#< remove me > at !pit mode, older arcade games have them...now wouldn't it be nice if you could actually see the interior of an S7 while you drive it? 3. Parts cost way to much and don't do a damn thing for handling. 4. We should have been able to put down payments on cars in the showrooms they change way to frequently and by the time you even attempt to make money to buy it, it's gone. 5. Should have had real time damage; that just makes 50% of a game for me, DAMAGE, then you'll see just how good you really are. Bottom line is, you want to drive in a "as real as it gets" simulation environment? BURNOUT 3! FORZA XboX good luck GT

Gran Turismo 4 is cool!!44011

Doug B. from Des Moines, Iowa says (28/Jan/2005):
I got my copy of Gran turismo 4 just shortly after it was released on 12/28/04(Japan). Sorry to say the American version won't be out until March at the earliest. I got the Japanese version and it rocks! I can't say for sure how many cars are in the game as I haven't attempted to count yet. I think it will be like 5 or 6 hundred. There is 50 tracks that you can be played forwards and backwards. You can take pit stops and have pit crews replace your tires. The cars selection is without a doubt better than 3. I am working on the licenses right now.
The japanese ones are color coded street cones and I am working on the A class right now. I finished B class last week. I still have the harder ones to get and it will probably be a bitch. I am souping up my first car 1990 CRX that I bought from the japanese used car lot. You can put manufacture parts on it or opt for aftermarket. you can buy NoZ for the cars witch is new to the series. The japanese version is done in credits as the US version of money. There are drag strips and other new things in the game that most people should enjoy. My next car I plan to do is the DoLorean from "Back to the Future". Also, Jay Leno has one of his cars in this game.
I give this game 9 as a score because all the hype for this game the last two years really doesn't live up to what was released.

The real driving simulator44317

Taylor from Wales, UK says (14/Mar/2005):
Gran Turismo 4, what can I say? It's the best driving simulator in existance bar none. I thought 3 was great but this go's up on a completely different level, with the crisp graphics and the way the game is layed out, not to mention the wealth of cars, tracks and many different championships theres no wonder they call it the real driving simulator.
I had a save file from gran turismo 3 and to get me started off on the right foot, GT4 allows you to transfer 100,000 credits over from GT3 so you can get a cracking car right from the start! how cool is that? You can also transfer things from GT4 Prologue, but i dont have that so i don't know what things you are able to transfer. One of the many new features I liked were that you can install Nitrous Oxide into your car to get that extra bit of speed on a straight!
So all in all a fantastic racing game that will not fail to impress even the gamers who are'nt fond of racing sims.

Graphics: 10

Sound: 9 (I gave it 9 because i dont like rock music, but they have house music on there too so im happy)

Gameplay: 10

Realism: 10

Overall GT4 gets a fantastic:10/10

The best driving simulator ever?45036

Matt from London, England says (14/Jul/2005):
GT4 is in my eyes is the best driving simulator to be produced so far on the PS2. Having said that though the game is not perfect and anyone that says it is, is wrong. It is very easy to be excited by the astonishing graphics, however as so many people have already said it dose lack damage to the cars which to me makes the game incomplete. As we all know driving games get better and better each year and so to rate this game as perfect would be naive as you would be admitting that there is no way of improving it. I am struggling to understand everyone's problems with the handling of the game as each car can be modified before each race to suit the track you are racing on and a good driver would know the gear to be in etc when turning.
Loving the selection of cars, however as was mentioned in an ealrier review the lack of ferraris etc is disapponiting.

As the game is so large I could ramble on for ages, but to sum it up I would say that it is the best racing sim on the PS2 enough depth to keep you going for ages and definitely worth the buy.

Needs Improvement44932

Jason from Atlanta, USA says (28/Jun/2005):
A good game, but one that needs work if it is to be the so called "ultimate driving simulator". The selection of cars isn't bad, but there's no ferrari's, lamborghini's, ect... and the selection of porsches IMHO is crap. Porsche is LEGENDARY in racing, porsche made the car that effectively made ford pack it up and go home with thier GT40 in the late 60's when no one thought it could be done. The availability to customize cars is severely lacking, no really special paint jobs, decals, kits, ect. There's really nothing that will change the cars overal look in the game, and when you change wheels, they still look stock size, and don't drive any different. If you really did get bigger wheels and lower the tire profile, you would get increased grip due to the higher Y flat radius of the tire, at a decrease of ride quality and making your shocks work harder. The engine sounds could be improved but that's negligable. Everything else is good about the game, very realistic car handling.

THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!45216

Milner from Barton Upon Humber,England says (23/Aug/2005):
This Does exactly what it says on the tin it has the most advanced graphics and unique real handling for every car the cars actually behave as they would in real life. Also the game has been improved to keep you captivated and addicted to it for hours by introducing more real world circuits such as suzuka and the Nurburgring nordscheife will keep you playing for hours as you simply have so much to do to achieve a 100% game completion Also as another improvement on the previous GT games is the introduction of classic cars from the 80`s which cannot be bought from the dealers being able to be bought from the used cars which change every week so you have to keep checking to see if the car you have a soft spot for will come up on the lists eg. i spent ages waiting for a lotus Carlton to come up and eventually i got one.
Overall this is a game which will not leave you waiting for a sequel because Basically the game at the present will leave you hooked for such a long time.

GT4 needs to go back to its roots...37478

Jimmy R/T from Holland, MI, US says (28/Dec/2003):
I am addicted to both GT2 and GT3, I happily admit it. The graphics on GT3 were eyecandy, and they didn't leave any of the realism out from GT2, but something was still missing. Cars! GT3 only had a fraction of the selection that GT2 had, and it broke my heart when they got rid of the used car section. If anything, they should have expanded it to include more than just Japanese cars. And I was totally bumbed by the decision to include F1/CHAMP/IRL cars in this game. If that was the only way to get Ferrari to lend permission, I'd rather do without them. I'd gladly trade some of the concept and tuner cars you could win in GT2 for the wheeled rockets. They need to remember that they are Gran Turismo, not Gran Prix. I'll fork out my $50.00 when it comes out, and I'll be happy with the game, no doubt... but I'll always keep going back to the GT2 loaded in my PSOne. Unless they can come up with a game that has all of GT2's substance with all of GT3's looks.

excellent, but could be better44541

phantom penguin from new zealand says (12/Apr/2005):
i couldn't wait untill gt4 came out, and when it did, i was there, i bought, got home and played it untill my hands and fingers ached. The graphics are flawless, the cars themselves are amazing, and the amount of stuff to do and buy is breath-taking. The down-side, the cars dont handle realisticly, i tried goin round an average hairpin at 80kph, and went flying off the road, i don't think so. The cars also sound different to the real life versions. And in every single gt game i have played, including gt4, gt3, gt concept, gt2 gt1, the mags on the cars (whilst racing)are 2D!!!!!!! superior graphics? even nfsu 2 has 3d mags even whilst racing. And why oh why did they take out the racing modification option from gt1, it was a favorite for spicing up your cars, while still reatining that racey look. The game is excellent, well werth the money, but if they put out gt5, please make those improvements o yeah, and CAR DAMAGE is a must!

what is going on45064

phoenix from united kingdom says (20/Jul/2005):
gt 4 not as good as i thought it would be but its a amazing game none the less. The choice of cars is wide but lacking to get some new names that we want to see like Ferrari,Lamborghini and Maserati. The game offers alot of hours of gameplay if you got the time to sit down and complete all the licences and do all of the driving missions. But if you just want to go side ways around the corner get in a dodge viper gtr team orica and turn off the traction control which is alot of fun.but when in comes to tuning your car its very disapointing when you look how far need for speed and midnight club have come. The graphics are very crisp and clinical which makes watching your replay very amuseing then you turn up your tv and hear the dreadful sound of the engines which is just awful. But for £40 you can't go wrong dispite the dodgey sound of the engines and the poop moding its a good game overall.

Don't waste your time with the game!45217

BenO from USA says (23/Aug/2005):
All these reviews talking about how great the graphics are that's a load of crap! If they where so hot why does the graphics scramble all the time for. And the wheels the pixels are so horrible that they look jagged around the edges. They may have tons of cars but about every one is crap where are the Ferraris and lambos they may have Aston Martin but where are the classics. And the subarus in this game drive like slugs. And the tuning shop what a rip off parts are way to much and when you do upgrade it doesnt help that much either. And why can't you resale the parts to. And the tuning village I thought buying parts there would be better but there the same stinking parts that you can buy from you car maker. The photo shoot may be one of a kind but do you really need that please! And that so called soundtrack is horrible. If you guys or gals want real fun get forza or need for speed.

Are you serious??44280

Przemek from Detroit, MI says (6/Mar/2005):
I have played GT4 at work for two days and as beautifull as the game is visually it SUCKS terribly in realism. The cars and tracks are nice but that's where it ends. The physics is crap. You race for example a Subaru Impreza STI at 45 MPH and try to make a turn of about 120 to 150 degrees and you pretty much fly out of the turn. Where is the realism in that? I drive my Nissan Altima SE-R daily and hit an entrance ramp to my local highway at an average 65MPH and I don't hear a squeek from the wheels not mentioning the lateral G-force ripping the vehicle out of the road. Ridiculous, and they claim it to be the real driving simulator. I am aware that programming a realistic physics engine for a driving game is difficult but this is a joke. I won't even go into the rally aspect of the game....on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give GT4 a 5...and that's just for the visuals...

GT4 Problem44221

JDM from Highlands Ranch, Colorado says (24/Feb/2005):
The one problem I saw with 1 through 3 is that the cars didnt sound right. They were saying that they had recorded the sounds of each car. Well I own a 2003 Civic Si and the 04 Civic Si in the game sounds nothing like it does in real life. Even after I installed an exhaust system on it in the game the sound didnt change. So honestly I think they could have done better. Oh and the tuner shops sell the exact same parts as the dealerships do so there is no point in going in there other than the cars. Oh and with a stage 3 turbo system on the civic it max's out at 383hp and a friend of mine has a stage 2 cybernetics turbo system and is pushing over 400hp so I think they didnt put much effort in making this realistic enough performance wise.

The greates game of all time45744

Simon from Denmark says (21/Jan/2006):
This game i outstanding..... it has unbeliveble realistic handling, much better than any other game. It has many many cars, and they all handles like in real life. You would think that when they make rally and normal racing i one game, at least on of the things would bee unrealistic, but thínk twice, this game has the most realistic handling, in race, and in rally. Some people think that need for speed is better, but i think that if you give gt4 10 stars, then you can´t give need for speed more than 4 stars, even though it is okay. The cars are simply beautifull, every one of them, and there are an endless number of cars. This game is, and will allways be the best and most realistic game ever made, untill they make gt5 :-)

Peace out

BAD!!!!44529

Kyle G. from Texas USA says (11/Apr/2005):
This is for joseph from toronto.... This game is not all about the turning radius. This game is giving you the realistic drive. Sure there might be some mess ups but over all this game rocks. I believe you can handle the turning radius. Surely the cars and simulation will get better with time. I think this game is awsome and they should continue to make these games i have only played for one hour so far and Gran Turismo 4 is THE game to play for car lovers like me. Creators who can sencronize the old cars with the new and make them perform they way they do, deserve praise. There is nothing better than a famous classic car.
Although its not classic but my car of choice is the 2005 Mustang GT. I think its friggen SWEEEEEET!

The most complete racer currently on the market45131

A gamer from Lincoln, England says (1/Aug/2005):
I am still enjoying the newest edition of this racing series and would like to add my humble opinion. The graphics are indeed very good and the handling is pretty close to what it is in real life. The selection of cars and tracks are second to none and I actually like the subtle changes the modifications make to your car(I don't care to much for the nitrous option as it's to easy to win when using it!). The two things that get to me are 1. Lack of collision damage. (I can see this is annoying everyone and will continue to do so until implemented). 2. Competitors lack any personality. Even naming the other drivers would help. You could start worrying about the talented rookie who might steal your thunder etc...
