Finally a side shooter on the next gen systems which rocks | | Alex from Woodway, TX says (24/Oct/2004): | After purchasing R-type Final on the PS2 I was convinced this genre of games was long dead. For $30(R-type final) you basically received a better looking version of Super R-type on the SNES. The game was equally plagued with slowdown, and just plain left a bad taste in your mouth.
I had no reason to believe Gradius V would be any better, damn was I wrong. The level are flat out clean. Everything is rotating, expanding, changing colors, all which your getting shot at like an Yankee fan in downtown Boston. Irem(makers of R-type)now seem like a bunch of lazy programmers. If Gradius V can do what it does, the Final should have been able to pull off a better product.
I know this review is supposed to be about Gradius V, and while it may seem it isn't, it really is. R-type was still awesome, just dulled by poor programming, Gradius V proved that within the first 10 seconds of gameplay.
To top it all off, it only cost $30. Since people will pass it up as a side shooter the price had to come down. Plus Konami managed to put in their famous code so you would get full power ups at the beginning of a level. Another great idea is where it keeps track of your playing time, and adds an extra credit for every hour played.
Great game, great programming, now waiting on VI
