I waited all this time........for this? |
| John Bastiani from Lakewood, Colorado USA says (7/Nov/2004): |
I went ahead and purchased the long awaited flight stick. There are buttons that do nothing at all, "simulated" buttons, redundant buttons, and generally useless buttons. This thing has a LOT of buttons. Wanna know what all the buttons DO? Keep your BOX as a reminder..... the games instructions tell nothing of the flight sticks controls. And all this time I thought for sure the flight stick would have CONFIGURABLE controls. That would have cost too much I guess. The dialogue is about as poorly written as a Godzilla flick. The only bonus feature is that you can change the dialogue to Japanese if you get sick of hearing the same ol stuff OVER and OVER. The cinematics are incredible, and I haven't figured out how to turn em OFF yet. There are constant inturruptions for cinematic nonsense packed with non-realistic dialogue.
It is a cool concept that you can give orders to the other planes in your squadron. A cool CONCEPT I said! The other pilots seldom follow your commands. Its pretty much like trying to combat enemies while trying not to crash into your wingmen. Sometimes they will actually destroy a target you assign, but if you request cover, you will be BLESSED if they keep a missile out of your butt. As for the game scenerey, it's not significantly better than ACE 4. The ONLY good thing I can say about the game.........27 or so new levels to play around in. Otherwise....... this has been a let-down of sorts. These guys had a long time to get it right.
If anyone at Namco reads this....I'll be living in San Jose after June 2005. If you want any help on development so you don't screw up Ace 6, give me a call. The 8 year olds who helped you with this one need to be in school......not helping you write cheesy dialogue.

So...Frustrating! |
| Josh Rouse from Vancouver, Washington says (3/Aug/2005): |
Sure, I could have spent my hard-earned money on a game that I knew would be great, like Metal Gear Solid 3. But having played the rest of the series, I felt I would be a disloyal fan if I didn't buy this. It actually turned out to be almost up to par. The gameplay is fantastic, the CG is marvelous, and the action is stupendous. What pisses me off, though, is being in the middle of a pitched battle and having to answer one of my wingman's questions. That just diverts my thumbs from the joysticks and violates them by making them touch the D-pad. I've actually bit the dust doing that. "Hey, Blaze, do you want to split up?" I move my left thumb for a moment, and BAM! A conveniently placed bridge. Doing mach 2 into a superstructure is really a downer. All in all, it was acceptable, but not amazing.

Beautiful but boring |
| Björn Andreasson from Gothenburg, Sweden says (27/Feb/2005): |
Sure, it looks and sounds good, and there are plenty of aircraft and missions. Unfortunately the missions are boring. The freedom of choice is gone. It´s all about restrictions: stay below 1000 ft, climb above 5000 ft, hit exactly the right target at exactly the right time or it´s "Mission failed" and start over. There were some great missions in AceCombat4 where you could pick and choose your target area and really kick ass and have fun. Not here. And your wingmates are basicaly useless. They could probably kill more enemies with their constant, mindless bull$#< remove me > at ! than with their weapons. Maybe this game is to overcreative for its own good. Next time, lighten up on the restrictions. Just put the enemy on the map and let us go after them!

best air-sim for console ever |
| vjet1 from miami, fl, usa says (4/Nov/2004): |
This game is fantastic is almost every respect. I am an avid pilot who just likes to come back and do the stuff on screen my aircraft can't do...fire and land on carriers etc. Ace 5 is the best sim I've played on a console with outstanding graphics and a huge assortment of aircraft. However I have a few bones to pick with it. The landing in Ace 4 was far more realistic and therefore better. With a throttle and stick you could set the right pitch and air speed to have a perfect flare all the way in. You can't in this one and it's too slow. Also you can' re-arm in this one or land when you want to. Either was the game is a must buy for any aircraft enthusiast.

"Nothing Else Comes Close" |
| Berg from Chicago, USA says (31/Oct/2004): |
This game's tag-line is pretty accurate. Well, actually the previous installments of Ace Combat are pretty close, but this is by far the most exciting and entertaining flight sim I have ever played. The graphics are superb, the physics are awesome, and the combat is even more frantic and heart-pounding than Ace Combat 4. This game is amazing. Obviously a must-buy for fans of the first and anyone who wants a great gaming experience.

Could have been better |
| Adam Bunker from Arlington, TX says (14/Nov/2004): |
Lets face it, Ace Combat 5 is still a good game... but the dialouge its killing me. Every mission I want to kill my own wingmen so they'll stop talking and asking me questions that won't really affect what they'll do in turn. The command function is a really good idea, if only your wingmen would obey it all the time.

Heart throbbing |
| Themethodmonkey from Dallas USA says (12/Nov/2004): |
I dont mean that in a romantic way, but more of a exciting way. On the last two levels i thought it was very exciting and very adrenalin pumping, my hands were shaking. yeah the dialouge was horrible, and the commands werent to great, but hey it was nice to look back and see some guys folowing you.

Great game! |
| Jorge Lopez from (New York)U.S.A. says (2/Mar/2005): |
I got to say, it's one of the best dam games I have ever played. It would of been better if the game let you buy a B-2 without having to use a cheat. Other than that, the planes were cool, the combat area was amazing, and everthing esle was off the hook.
